RESUMO

Pre-concentration is essential for energy and resource recovery from municipal wastewater. The potential of forward osmosis (FO) membranes to pre-concentrate wastewater for subsequent biogas production has been demonstrated, although biofouling has also emerged as a prominent challenge. This study, using a cellulose triacetate FO membrane, shows that chloramination of wastewater in the feed solution at 3⁻8 mg/L residual monochloramine significantly reduces membrane biofouling. During a 96-h pre-concentration, flux in the chloraminated FO system decreased by only 6% and this flux decline is mostly attributed to the increase in salinity (or osmotic pressure) of the feed due to pre-concentration. In contrast, flux in the non-chloraminated FO system dropped by 35% under the same experimental conditions. When the feed was chloraminated, the number of bacterial particles deposited on the membrane surface was significantly lower compared to a non-chloraminated wastewater feed. This study demonstrated, for the first time, the potential of chloramination to inhibit bacteria growth and consequently biofouling during pre-concentration of wastewater using a FO membrane.

RESUMO

In this paper, the electromagnetic interaction between human skin and terahertz radiation is investigated through the double Debye parameters' extraction algorithm. The changes of skin content are contrasted at the frequencies below one terahertz(THz) but the recent approaches could provide only a rough estimation. We propose an global optimization based identification, which results in globally accurate estimators in the frequency range up to two THz, and thus supports the validity of Debye model for Terahertz wave's propagation and reflection in skin. Simulation results confirm our prominent methodology.

RESUMO

This correspondence proposes an efficient semidefinite programming (SDP) method for the design of a class of linear phase finite impulse response triplet halfband filter banks whose filters have optimal frequency selectivity for a prescribed regularity order. The design problem is formulated as the minimization of the least square error subject to peak error constraints and regularity constraints. By using the linear matrix inequality characterization of the trigonometric semi-infinite constraints, it can then be exactly cast as a SDP problem with a small number of variables and, hence, can be solved efficiently. Several design examples of the triplet halfband filter bank are provided for illustration and comparison with previous works. Finally, the image coding performance of the filter bank is presented.

RESUMO

Previous experimental studies of insertion of the Nucleus standard straight and the Contour arrays into the scala tympani have reported that the electrode arrays cause damage to various cochlear structures. However, the level of insertion-induced damage by these electrode arrays to cochlear structures (the spiral ligament, the basilar membrane and the osseous spiral lamina) has not been quantified. Although it has been suggested that rotation can overcome this resistance and prevent the basilar membrane from being pierced by the tip of the Nucleus standard straight array, there has not been any attempt to study the relationship between the rotation and the reduction of damage to the basilar membrane. In this study, 3D finite element analyses of insertions of the Nucleus standard straight array and the Contour array into the scala tympani have been undertaken. The perforation of the basilar membrane by the tip of the Nucleus standard straight array at the region of 11-14 mm from the round window appears to be compounded by the geometry of the spiral passage of the scala tympani. Anti-clockwise rotations between 25 degrees and 90 degrees applied at the basal end of the electrode array (for the right cochlea) were shown to significantly reduce the contact stresses exerted by the tip on the basilar membrane which support the practice of applying small rotation partway through insertion of electrode array to minimize damage to the basilar membrane. Although the Contour array (with its stylet intact) is stiffer than the Nucleus standard straight array, a slight withdrawal of the stylet from the Contour array before insertion was found to significantly reduce damage by the electrode array to the spiral ligament and the basilar membrane.

RESUMO

Frictional conditions between the electrode array (in cochlear implants) and the endosteum lining covering the walls of the interior scala tympani structure strongly influence the sliding behaviour of the electrode array. Friction coefficients, determined by a simple but effective method based on the impending slippage model of electrode arrays sliding over the endosteum lining are reported in this paper. In this study, friction coefficients of the Nucleus standard straight and the Contour arrays have been determined with and without lubricants applied on the endosteum lining. In the absence of applied lubricants, friction coefficients were found to be 0.19 for the Nucleus standard straight array and 0.12 for the Contour array. Application of lubricants (glycerin and sorbelene) has the potential to lower the friction coefficient for Nucleus standard straight array (0.12 and 0.15) and for the Contour array (0.04 and 0.08). These results are used in finite element models to predict accurately the trajectories of electrode arrays and sliding contact pressures on cochlear structures to evaluate the likelihood of damage sustained during insertion.

RESUMO

Trauma and damage during insertion of electrode arrays into the human cochlea are strongly related to the stiffness of the array. The stiffness properties of electrode arrays, which were determined by three-point flexural bending and buckling tests, are reported in this paper. To date there has been limited publication on mechanical properties of these electrode arrays. Previous studies mainly focused on characterizing the stiffness of the tip of the Nucleus straight array with little emphasis on characterizing the stiffness of its whole length. In this study, stiffnesses of the Nucleus straight and contour electrode arrays have been determined along their length. Young's modulus of elasticity of the Nucleus straight array has been found to increase from the tip (182 MPa) to the rear end (491 MPa), whereas the stiffness of the contour array is greatest near the tip (480 MPa) and is fairly uniform in the middle and rear sections of the electrode array (380-400 MPa). Buckling experiments have shown that the contour array has much higher critical buckling load (about four times) than the Nucleus straight array. The results from three-point flexural bending and buckling experiments provide significant data for the development of electrode arrays, from which new array designs with improved flexibility can be developed. The results of stiffness properties are also important input for use in finite element models to predict the trajectories during insertion and to help evaluate the effects of different electrode array designs on damage sustained during insertion.

RESUMO

This is a study in the rat of the distribution of specific neurotransmitters in neurones projecting from the substantia nigra reticulata (SNR) to the ventrolateral (VL) and ventromedial (VM) thalamic nuclei. Individual axons projecting from the SNR to these thalamic nuclei have also been reconstructed following small injection of the anterograde tracer dextran biotin into the the SNR. Analysis of reconstructions revealed two populations of SNR neurones projecting onto the VL and VM thalamic nuclei. One group projects directly onto the VM and VL, and the other projects to the VM/VL and to the parafascicular nucleus. In another set of experiments Fluoro-Gold was injected into the VL/VM to label SNR projection neurones retrogradely, and immunohistochemistry was performed to determine the distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and glutamate in Fluoro-Gold-labelled SNR projection neurones. Most SNR-VL/VM thalamic projection neurones were immunoreactive to acetylcholine or glutamate, whereas only 25% of the projection neurones were found to be immunoreactive to GABA.

RESUMO

The entopeduncular nucleus (EP) is a major outflow nucleus of the basal ganglia and innervates the lateral habenula, parafascicular, pedunculopontine, ventrolateral (VL), ventromedial (VM), and mediodorsal thalamic nuclei. This study investigated the morphology of single axons of entopeduncular neurons projecting to the motor thalamus by placing small injections of dextran biotin into the EP and reconstructing drawings of single axons from serial sections. There were two populations of entopeduncular-thalamic projection axons: those that projected only to the motor thalamus (VL and VM) and those that projected to both the motor thalamus and other nuclei (e.g., the habenula). The neurochemistry of EP neurons projecting to the thalamus was investigated by injecting the retrograde tracer FluoroGold into the VL and VM thalamic nuclei to retrogradely fill entopeduncular projection neurons. These were subsequently immunohistochemically labeled for choline acetyl transferase, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and glutamate. Consistent with previous studies, significant proportions of these neurons were GABA immunoreactive. In addition, approximately half of the entopeduncular-thalamic projecting neurons were found to be cholinergic. This excitatory input is most likely derived from axons that branch as they pass through the motor thalamus to the lateral habenula.

RESUMO

The retinoid acid inducible midkine gene encodes a highly basic, heparin-binding protein that possesses potential functions of growth or differentiation during the early stages of mouse embryonic development. Midkine gene has been mapped to mouse Chromosome 2. Here we report that the midkine gene is located in close proximity to the m4 muscarinic acid receptor gene. M4 codes for a transmembrane G protein that functions to transduce the action of acetylcholine neural transmitters in the nervous system. The two genes have the directions of their transcriptions running toward one another, and the distance between their respective 3' ends is approximately 1.3 kb.

RESUMO

Polymerase chain reaction amplification of cDNA for acidic fibroblast growth factor in several lines of cultured human cells revealed two forms of mRNA. The novel smaller mRNA lacks the entire second coding exon of the acidic fibroblast growth factor gene, whereas the previously identified mRNA consists of three coding exons. The truncated variant of acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF') is only 60 amino acids long with an apparent molecular mass of 6.7 kD on sodium dodecyl sulfate gels in contrast to 18 kD for the full-length acidic fibroblast growth factor. aFGF' elicits only minimal fibroblast proliferation and antagonizes the effects of acidic fibroblast growth factor when added exogenously to or when coexpressed with aFGF in BALB/c/3T3 fibroblasts. Thus, the truncated variant of acidic fibroblast growth factor may provide fibroblasts with a unique mechanism for endogenous regulation of their responses to acidic fibroblast growth factor.

RESUMO

Human cultured monocyte-like tumour cells of the U937 histiocyte derived line were stimulated with phorbol myristate acetate, and generated and released an 18,000 MW polypeptide fibroblast-activating factor (FAF). Based on recognition by an antiserum to a synthetic peptide representing the 17 amino-terminal amino acids of FAF, two proteins of 32,000 and 35,000 MW were identified in extracts of U937 cells. Purification of the intracellular FAF-related proteins to homogeneity allowed the generation and amino acid sequencing of nine tryptic fragments of 4-11 amino acids. Neither of the intracellular FAF-related proteins exhibited the fibroblast proliferation-stimulating activity of FAF, suggesting that they are biosynthetic precursors analogous to the inactive propeptides of interleukin-1 beta and tumour necrosis factor-alpha.

RESUMO

The authors report 3 cases of idiopathic avascular necrosis of the capitate and review them together with published reports of 16 further cases. The patients are normally young and the diagnosis delayed. The radiographs may demonstrate an eggshell appearance, a sequestrum, marked sclerosis, or cystic changes. A classification is proposed based on the portion of the bone involved. Early osteoarthritic changes occur and carpal instability may develop. It is suggested that there are features in the blood supply which may be significant. Treatment is by operation, involving either excision of the capitate with replacement with a prosthetic spacer, or else by arthrodesis.

RESUMO

Starvation in 15 geese (mean initial body mass, m = 6.3 kg) fasting for about 40 days (mean decrease in m = 2.5 kg) was characterized by three periods. Period I (3-8 days), an adaptation period, was marked by a considerable decrease in the daily rate of change in m (dm) as well as in resting metabolic rate (RMR), and by high fat mobilization. In period II (a period of economy) the decreases in dm, RMR, and daily rate of nitrogen excretion (dne) were reduced: when expressed per unit of body mass these rates were either constant or decreased slightly. Period III, a critical period, was characterized by a rapid increase in both dm and dne that appeared when body mass had dropped to 4.7-3.2 kg. In parallel there was a greater decrease in intracellular fluid volume below 5 kg. Throughout the fast, in contrast to fasting mammals, plasma glucose and alanine concentrations were maintained at high levels (8-10 and 0.4 mM, respectively), and there was no increase in acetoacetate. However, after 20 days of fasting, plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate concentration (beta-OHB) increased to about 20 mM, while blood pH remained constant and blood PCO2 decreased. Thus, compensation for metabolic acidosis was partly attributed to respiratory alkalosis. Throughout the fast, the variations in beta-OHB were a mirror image of those for daily changes in body mass and in nitrogen excretion. This presumably reflects a hormonal change, but might also suggest a key role of beta-OHB in the control of energy expenditure and/or in regulation of body mass as well as in protein sparing.

RESUMO

In fed geese, plasma levels of glucose and alanine were 1.9 g.l-1 and 560 mumol.l-1, respectively. During a long fast (40 days), plasma glucose and alanine were maintained at a high level (1.5-1.8 g.l-1 and 370-540 mumol.l-1, respectively). Plasma level of acetoacetate was very low (40 mumol.l-1); by contrast, plasma level of beta hydroxybutyrate reached very high values (20 mmol.l-1) after about 20 days of fasting, then it decreased. Plasma levels of lactate and pyruvate decreased along the course of the fast, from 2 500 to 2 000 mumol.l-1 and 220 to 170 mumol.l-1, respectively.
