RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Medical students hold significant importance, as they represent the future of healthcare provision. This study aimed to explore psychological antecedents towards the monkeypox (mpox) vaccines among postgraduate and undergraduate medical students across countries. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among medical students aged 18 years old and above in 7 countries; Egypt, Romania, Malaysia, and Yemen, Iraq, India, and Nigeria. We used social media platforms between September 27 and November 4, 2022. An anonymous online survey using the 5C scale was conducted using snowball and convenience Sampling methods to assess the 5 psychological antecedents of vaccination (i.e., confidence, constraints, complacency, and calculation, as well as collective responsibility). RESULTS: A total of 2780 participants were recruited. Participants' median age was 22 years and 52.1% of them were males. The 5C psychological antecedents of vaccination were as follows: 55% were confident about vaccination, 10% were complacent, 12% experienced constraints, and 41% calculated the risk and benefit. Lastly, 32% were willing to be vaccinated for the prevention of infection transmission to others. The Country was a significant predictor of confidence, complacency, having constraints, and calculation domains (P < 0.001). Having any idea about the mpox vaccine was linked to 1.6 times higher odds of being more confident [OR = 1.58 (95% CI, 1.26-1.98), P < 0.001] Additionally, living in a rural area significantly increased complacency [OR = 1.42 (95% CI, 1.05-1.95), P = 0.024] as well as having anyone die from mpox [OR = 3.3 (95% CI, 1.64-6.68), P < 0.001]. Education level was associated with increased calculation [OR = 2.74 (95% CI, 1.62-4.64), P < 0.001]. Moreover, being single and having no chronic diseases significantly increased the calculation domain [OR = 1.40 (95% CI, 1.06-1.98), P = 0.02] and [OR = 1.54 (95% CI, 1.10-2.16), P = 0.012] respectively. Predictors of collective responsibility were age 31-45 years [OR = 2.89 (95% CI, 1.29-6.48), P = 0.01], being single [OR = 2.76 (95% CI, 1.94 -3.92), P < 0.001], being a graduate [OR = 1.59 (95% CI (1.32-1.92), P < 0.001], having no chronic disease [OR = 2.14 (95% CI, 1.56-2.93), P < 0.001], and not knowing anyone who died from mpox [OR = 2.54 (95% CI, 1.39-4.64), P < 0.001), as well as living in a middle-income country [OR = 0.623, (95% CI, 0.51-0.73), P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the multifaceted nature of psychological antecedents of vaccination, emphasizing the impact of socio-demographic factors, geographic location, and awareness, as well as previous experiences on individual attitudes and collective responsibility towards vaccination.

RESUMO

The growth and productivity of crop plants are negatively affected by salinity-induced ionic and oxidative stresses. This study aimed to provide insight into the interaction of NaCl-induced salinity with Azolla aqueous extract (AAE) regarding growth, antioxidant balance, and stress-responsive genes expression in wheat seedlings. In a pot experiment, wheat kernels were primed for 21 h with either deionized water or 0.1% AAE. Water-primed seedlings received either tap water, 250 mM NaCl, AAE spray, or AAE spray + NaCl. The AAE-primed seedlings received either tap water or 250 mM NaCl. Salinity lowered growth rate, chlorophyll level, and protein and amino acids pool. However, carotenoids, stress indicators (EL, MDA, and H2O2), osmomodulators (sugars, and proline), antioxidant enzymes (CAT, POD, APX, and PPO), and the expression of some stress-responsive genes (POD, PPO and PAL, PCS, and TLP) were significantly increased. However, administering AAE contributed to increased growth, balanced leaf pigments and assimilation efficacy, diminished stress indicators, rebalanced osmomodulators and antioxidant enzymes, and down-regulation of stress-induced genes in NaCl-stressed plants, with priming surpassing spray in most cases. In conclusion, AAE can be used as a green approach for sustaining regular growth and metabolism and remodelling the physio-chemical status of wheat seedlings thriving in salt-affected soils.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: One of the major concerns of the post-COVID-19 era is elucidating and addressing the long-term complications of COVID-19. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A web-based questionnaire was distributed in Jordan to assess the prevalence and recovery from chemosensory dysfunction among COVID-19 long-haulers in Jordan. RESULTS: A total of 611 respondents complained of chemosensory dysfunction (age range = 18-68 years), and the majority of the respondents were female (88.4%). Parosmia was the most prevalent olfactory dysfunction reported (n = 337, 33.3%), and parageusia was the most frequently reported gustatory dysfunction (n = 239, 36.4%). Medications were not reported to be associated with a better perception of smell or taste by nearly half of those who had been treated (n = 146, 46.1%). Among participants who had received olfactory rehabilitation/training (n = 215, 35.2%), 43.7% (n = 94) reported modest improvement, with the most frequently helpful scents being coffee (n = 80, 24.8%), aromatic oils (n = 74, 23%), and perfumes/colognes (n = 73, 22.7%). Age was found to have a significant negative correlation with complete recovery. In addition, age (p < .05), anosmia (p < .001), hyperosmia (p < .001), ageusia (p < .05), and duration of olfactory dysfunction (p < .001) were all independent predictors of complete recovery. CONCLUSIONS: Chemosensory dysfunctions are largely subjective; therefore, more objective examinations are required to draw more definite conclusions.

RESUMO

Thalassemia is known to induce extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH), which is a compensatory mechanism in which the body forms blood cells outside the bone marrow. While EMH typically affects organs such as the spleen and liver, there are rare instances where it leads to spinal cord compression (SCC) in the epidural space. A 31-year-old male patient with transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia presented with numbness and bilateral limb weakness due to EMH. Neurological examination revealed increased tone in both legs, reduced power, loss of crude touch and pain sensation, and increased deep tendon reflexes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a lobulated soft tissue structure in the posterior dural intrathecal space causing SCC. Laminectomy of the T2-T8 vertebrae was done, after which the lesion was identified and completely removed. Post-surgery, significant neurological improvements were observed in both motor and sensory functions. Thalassemia patients presenting with symptoms of SCC should be investigated for the presence of epidural EMH. Treatment options include decompressive surgery, blood transfusions, hydroxyurea, and radiotherapy.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb in various tobacco samples from Palestine and Jordan. Cigarette smoking is recognized as a significant contributor to the radiation dose received by individuals, primarily due to the elevated levels of 210Pb and 210Po found in tobacco. The analysis revealed that the average concentrations of 210Po in locally sourced tobacco and cigarette samples in Palestine are 16.8 ± 2.3 mBq/g and 18.5 ± 2.0 mBq/g, with a total average of 17.8 ± 7.4 mBq/g (15.5 mBq/cigarette). Similarly, the average concentrations of 210Pb in these samples are 18.5 ± 2.6 mBq/g and 20.3 ± 2.2 mBq/g, with a total average of 19.6 ± 8.1 mBq/g (17.0 mBq/cigarette). In Jordan, the average concentrations of 210Po in cigarette samples and narghile tobacco are 20.1 ± 2.4 mBq/g and 18.3 ± 4.1 mBq/g, with a total average value of 19.6 ± 9.9 mBq/g (18.0 mBq/cigarette), while the average concentrations of 210Pb are 22.2 ± 2.6 mBq/g and 20.2 ± 4.5 mBq/g, with a total average value of 21.6 ± 10.8 mBq/g (19.9 mBq/cigarette). The annual effective doses resulting from inhalation were calculated for smokers of these samples. The findings revealed that the levels of 210Po and 210Pb radioactivity in certain investigated samples exceeded the results of studies in many countries of the world. The associated effective doses per year from smoking for all brands products in Palestine range from 34.7 µSv/y to 186.5 µSv/y with an average of 109.5 µSv/y, while in Jordan 54.5 µSv/y to 289.1 µSv/y with an average of 130.9 µSv/y.

RESUMO

Post-ERCP acute pancreatitis (PEP) is a common and serious complication with high morbidity and mortality rates. There is a paucity of data on the frequency of PEP in a resource constraint setting like Bangladesh. Hence we have conducted a prospective study to determine the frequency of PEP and the factors associated with its occurrence. This prospective, observational study was carried out in Gastroenterology Department of Dhaka Medical College & Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from April 2018 to December 2018 on the consecutive patients who underwent ERCP. PEP and its severity were diagnosed according to consensus definition. Serum lipase was done in all patients before procedure and 24 hours after procedure or if patient develops abdominal pain after the procedure which became earlier. Total 168 patients were included (mean age 46.97±14.35 years; male 72(43.0%). The most common indication of ERCP was choledocholithiasis 97(58.0%) followed by malignant biliary obstruction 45(27.0%), recurrent pyogenic cholangitis 8(5.0%), chronic pancreatitis 4(2.3%), biliary ascariasis 4(2.3%) and others 10(6.0%). Overall post ERCP complication rate was 46(27.3%) including cholangitis 29(17.3%), pancreatitis 16(9.5%), bleeding 12(7.1%), aspiration pneumonia 4(2.4%) and death 3(1.8%). Regarding the severity of PEP, 50.0%, 43.7% and 6.3% patients developed mild, moderate and severe pancreatitis respectively. Number of cannulation attempts >5 times [22(48%) vs. 17(14%); p=0.001], cannulation attempts duration more than 10 minutes [25(55%) vs. 27(22%); p=0.001], unintentional passage of guide wire into the pancreatic duct [8(17%) vs. 18(15%); p=0.001], pancreatic duct contrast injection [12(26%) vs. 2(1.6%); p=0.001] and pre-cut sphincterotomy [16(35%) vs. 6(4.9%); p=0.001] were significantly different between the patients who developed PEP compared to those who did not. In multiple logistic regressions analysis, pancreatic duct contrast injection was significantly associated with PEP [OR 25.523 with 95% CI (4.049- 100.0%)]. Around ten percent patients had developed PEP. Regarding the severity half of them were mild, 44.0% patients had moderate and 6.0% patient had severe type of pancreatitis. Difficult cannulation, unintentional passage of guide wire into the pancreas, pancreatic duct contrast injection and pre-cut sphincterotomy were associated with PEP. Among them pancreatic duct contrast injection had independent significance in the causation of PEP.

RESUMO

This cross-sectional descriptive purposive study was done on 150 (70 right and 80 left) fully ossified dry human scapulae of Bangladeshi people to find out the variation in length of acromiocoracoid and acromioglenoid distance. Sample collection was carried out in the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh from January to December 2019. Any kind of damaged or broken scapulae were excluded to maintain standard measurement. Length of these distances was measured with the help of digital Vernier slide calipers. The mean±SD acromiocoracoid distance were 35.8±4.64 mm and 36.32±5.55 mm on right and left sided scapulae respectively and the mean±SD acromioglenoid distance were 27.69±3.43 mm on right sided scapulae and 28.18±3.26 mm on left sided scapulae. These data are important to compare Bangladeshi scapulae to those from various other races that could contribute to demographic studies of shoulder disease probability and management in Bangladeshi population.

RESUMO

Femoral morphometric variation is a dynamic system for different region, which is influenced by geographical, physiological and environmental factors, due to the adaptation, functional and remodeling responses of bones. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 (64 right and 86 left) fully ossified dry human femur of Bangladeshi people to find out the variation of mid shaft antero-posterior and transverse diameter of femur. Sample was collected in the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College (MMC), Bangladesh from January 2019 to December 2019. All samples were assessed to eliminate fractured, pathologically damaged and remodeled bones. The diameters were measured with the help of digital Vernier slide calipers. The mean±SD mid shaft antero-posterior diameter of right and left femur were 25.03±2.86 mm and 25.54±2.65mm respectively. The mean±SD transverse diameter of right and left femur was 24.24±2.43mm and 24.54±2.38mm respectively. The knowledge of variations in the parameters of dry femora will help the orthopedicians for the treatment and management of femoral shaft fracture. These data also provide information about mid shaft diameter of femur of Bangladeshi people and to compare these data to those from various other races. Thus it could contribute for the design of well-fitting prosthesis which suits the Bangladeshi population. This value may be considered while making a best-fit femoral prosthesis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Investigation on specific biomarkers for diagnostic or prognostic usage in mental diseases and especially bipolar disorder BD seems to be one outstanding field in current research. Serum neurofilament light (sNfL), a marker for neuro-axonal injury, is increased in various acute and chronic neurological disorders, but also neuro-psychiatric conditions, including affective disorders. The aim of our study was to determine a potential relation between a neuron-specific marker like sNfL and different clinical states of BD. METHODS: In the current investigation, 51 patients with BD and 35 HC were included. Mood ratings with the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) and the Young mania rating scale (YMRS) have been included. Illness duration was defined as the period from the time of diagnosis out of self-report and medical records. sNFL was quantified by a commercial ultrasensitive single molecule array (Simoa). RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between the number of manic episodes in the past and sNfL, controlled for age and duration of illness. (R = 0.49, p = 0.03) Depressive episodes were not associated to sNfL values. (R = 0.311, p = n.s.) Patients with >3 years of illness duration showed significantly higher levels of sNfL (M18.59; SD 11.89) than patients with shorter illness duration (M = 12.38, p = 0.03) and HC (M = 11.35, p = 0.02). Patients with <3 years of illness and HC did not differ significantly in sNfL levels. DISCUSSION: Interestingly, individuals with BD and HC did not differ in sNFL levels in general. Nevertheless, looking at the BD cohort more specifically, we found that individuals with BD with longer duration of illness (>3 years) had higher levels of sNfL than those with an illness duration below 3 years. Our results confirm previous reports on the relation of neuro-axonal injury as evidenced by sNfL and illness specific variables in bipolar disorder. Further studies are needed to clarify if sNfL may predict the disease course and/or indicated response to treatment regimes.

RESUMO

The present research displays the green synthesis of stable silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs). The aqueous solution of Spirulina platensis (blue green algae) source was used as a reducing and capping agent and this study assessed the cytotoxicity of Ag- and CuO-NPs on three cancer cell cultures: A549 (lung cancer), HCT (human colon cancer), Hep2 (laryngeal carcinoma cancer) and normal cell (WISH). For NPs characterization, the UV/Vis spectroscopy was used where their formation and crystallinity were proven with λmax values for Ag- and CuO-NPs of 425 and 234 nm, respectively. According to X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Ag-NPs were spherical in shape (size 2.23-14.68 nm) and CuO-NPs were small (size 3.75-12.4 nm). Zeta potential analysis showed the particles potential, which was recorded by -14.95 ± 4.31 mV for Ag-NPs and -21.63 ± 4.90 mV for CuO-NPs. After that, Ag- and CuO-NPs were assessed for anticancer properties against A549, HCT, Hep2 and WISH. IC50 of Ag-NPs recorded 15.67, 12.94, 3.8 and 10.44 µg/ml for WISH, A549, HCT and Hep2, respectively. IC50 for CuO-NPs was recorded as 32.64, 54.59, 3.98 and 20.56 µg/ml for WISH, A549, HCT and Hep2 cells, respectively. Safety limits for WISH and A549 were achieved 98.64% by 2.44 µg/ml and 83.43% by 4.88 µg/ml of Ag-NPs, and it was found to be 97.94% by 2.44 µg/ml against HCT, while that for Hep2 is 95.9% by 2.44 µg/ml. Concerning the anticancer effect of CuO-NPs, the safety limit was recorded as 88.70% by 2.44 and 98.48% by 4.88 µg/ml against WISH and A549, while HCT reached 89.92% by 2.44 µg/ml and Hep2 was 83.33% by 4.88 µg/ml. Green nanotechnology applications such as Ag-NPs and CuO-NPs have numerous benefits of ecofriendliness and compatibility for biomedical applications such as anticancer effects against cancer cells.

RESUMO

In adults and teenagers, airway clearance physiotherapy techniques (ACPT) are various and numerous. However, they for still awaiting scientific validation. Among ACPTs, Slow Expiration with the Glottis Opened in the Lateral Posture (ELTGOL), Autogenic Drainage (DA), and Active Cycling Breathing Technique (ACBT) present a Grade B level of evidence with weak recommendations. Even though these maneuvers are widely applied, precise description of chest physiotherapy (CP) is largely absent from the scientific literature; it is difficult to standardize its implementation and reproduce the results; scientific validation and faithful execution of the techniques are consequently problematic. In this paper, the authors aim to depict each of the three CP techniques as precisely as possible; with this in mind, graphic modeling of the different respiratory exercises is presented in such a way that they can be easily learned, applied and reproduced by physiotherapists.

RESUMO

Herein, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbents are designed with distinct hard and soft metal building units, namely, [Co2ICoII(PD)2(BP)] (Co_PD-BP) and [Cu2ICuII(PD)2(BP)] (Cu_PD-BP), where H2PD = pyrazine-1,4-diide-2,3-dicarboxylic acid and BP = 4,4'-bipyridine. The designed MOFs were characterized via spectral and SCXRD techniques, which confirm the mixed-valent states (+1 and +2) of the metal ions. Topological analysis revealed the rare ths and gwg topologies for Co MOF, while Cu-MOF exhibits a unique 8T21 topology in the 8-c net (point symbol for net: {424·64}). Moreover, severe environmental issues can be resolved by effectively removing heterocyclic organosulfur compounds from fuels via adsorptive desulfurization. Further, the developed MOFs were investigated for sulfur removal via adsorptive desulfurization from a model fuel consisting of dibenzothiophene (DBT), benzothiophene (BT), and thiophene (T) in the liquid phase using n-octane as a solvent. The findings revealed that Cu_PD-BP effectively removes the DBT with a removal efficiency of 86% at 300 ppm and an operating temperature of 25 °C, with a recyclability of up to four cycles. The adsorption kinetic analysis showed that the pseudo-first-order model could fit better with the experimental data indicating the physisorption process. Further, the studies revealed that adsorption capacity increased with the increasing initial DBT concentration with a remarkable capacity of 70.5 mg/g, and the adsorption process was well described by the Langmuir isotherm. The plausible reason behind the enhanced removal efficiency shown by Cu_PD-BP as compared to Co_PD-BP could be the soft-soft interactions between soft sulfur and soft Cu metal centers. Interestingly, density functional theory (DFT) studies were done in order to predict the mechanism of binding of thiophenic compounds with Cu_PD-BP, which further ascertained that along with other interactions, the S···π and S···Cu interactions predominate, resulting in a high uptake of DBT as compared to others. In essence, Cu_PD-BP turns out to be a promising adsorbent in the field of fuel desulfurization for the benefit of mankind.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is a mental health disorder that is associated with feelings of hopelessness, despair, and lack of motivation. Its effects on pregnant women are not limited to hemorrhage and hypertension and may lead to maternal mortality. As a result, maternal antidepressant usage during pregnancy has rapidly increased in the United States. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are considered one of the most prescribed antidepressants. Thus, this study aims to measure the prevalence of SSRI use during pregnancy. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah (KAMC-J), Saudi Arabia. The population consisted of all pregnant women aged 18 or older from the period of January 2017 to December 2020 (N=13484). The sampling technique was non-probability consecutive sampling. RESULTS: The study included 13,484 pregnant women, and further analysis revealed that 62 (0.459%) were exposed to at least one type of antidepressant during pregnancy. Of these, 12 (19.35%) had used more than one class of antidepressants. The majority of the sample, comprising 39 (62.90%) women, were between 34 and 44 years old. Furthermore, SSRIs were found to be the most commonly used antidepressant (41, 66.13%). In addition, fluoxetine was the most frequently prescribed antidepressant, with 23 (37.10%) patients receiving this medication. The dosage did not exceed 20 mg for the majority of the patients on SSRIs. CONCLUSION: This study measured the prevalence and patterns of SSRIs and use of different antidepressant classes during pregnancy. After calculating the prevalence of each class of antidepressants among 62 pregnant women exposed to antidepressants, the analysis concluded that SSRIs are the most prescribed antidepressant during pregnancy. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on the use of antidepressants during pregnancy and highlights the need for ongoing research in this area.

RESUMO

Diltiazem (DTZ) is one of the most effective medications for treating cardiovascular diseases. It has been widely used for the treatment of angina pectoris, hypertension and some types of arrhythmia. The development and application of a modified carbon paste sensor with improved detection limits for the potentiometric determination of diltiazem are the main goals of the current study. Sensitivity, long-term stability, reproducibility and improving the electrochemical performance are among the characteristics that have undergone careful examination. A modified carbon paste sensor based on ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) as ionophore, a lipophilic anionic additive (NaTPB) and a ZnO-decorated polyaniline/coal nanocomposite (ZnO@PANI/C) dissolved in dibutyl phthalate plasticizer, exhibited the best performance and Nernstian slope. The ZnO@PANI/C based sensor succeeded in lowering the detection limit to 5.0 × 10-7 through the linear range 1.0 × 10-6 to 1.0 × 10-2 mol L-1 with fast response time ≤ 10.0 s. The prepared nanomaterial was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface properties of the proposed sensor were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The selectivity behavior of the investigated sensor was tested against a drug with similar chemical structure and biologically important blood electrolytes (Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+). The proposed analytical method was applied for DTZ analysis in pure drug, pharmaceutical products and industrial water samples with excellent recovery data.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence, particularly within psychiatric nursing environments, is an emerging concern globally and has been recognized as a significant occupational stressor with considerable psychological consequences, yet it remains underexplored, warranting an in-depth study. AIM: This study aimed to assess the psychological consequences of violence on psychiatric nurses in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHOD: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. A convenience sampling technique was used to select 198 psychiatric nurses working in two hospitals with psychiatric departments in Jeddah. A self-administered questionnaire and the Impact of Event Scale - Revised (IES-R) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 22 (IBM Corp. Released 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). RESULTS: Out of the 198 psychiatric nurses who participated in the study, 80.8% reported experiencing violence in their workplace, highlighting the need for effective interventions to prevent and manage violence in psychiatric settings. The majority of the participants had a diploma (68.2%), and 54.5% of the nurses had more than 10 years of experience. Among patient-related factors related to violence, drug abuse had the highest mean score of 4.07 (SD=0.89) and was ranked as the most significant factor, while among nursing-related factors, a lower level of experience in psychiatric care had the lowest mean score of 3.43 (SD=1.11) and was ranked as the least important factor. The nurses tended to avoid discussing the traumatic event, as indicated by the highest mean score of 2.10 (SD=1.18) for item 22, "I tried not to talk about it." The mean score for the avoidance subscale of the IES-R was 1.55 (SD=0.78), the highest mean score among the subscales and ranked first in terms of severity. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the significant psychological consequences of violence on psychiatric nurses in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

RESUMO

Aim: The study aims to compare the short-term outcomes of reduced ports sleeve gastrectomy versus conventional five ports sleeve gastrectomy in postoperative weight loss, morbidity rate, pain, and resolution of obesity-related diseases. Materials and Methods: One hundred forty patients were equally allocated to reduced ports (n = 70) and conventional ports (5 ports) Laparoscopic Gastrectomy groups. The primary outcomes are postoperative pain by numeric rating score, cosmetic visual analog score, satisfaction visual analog score, operative time, and hospital stay. The secondary outcomes are postoperative complications and comorbidity resolution. Results: The numeric rating score for pain assessment was statistically significantly lower in the reduced ports group compared with the conventional ports group at 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours, postoperatively (P < .001). Cosmetic visual analog score was statistically significantly higher in the reduced ports group compared with conventional ports group at 2 and 3 months follow-up (P < .001 and P = .008, respectively). Patient satisfaction visual analog score was statistically significantly higher in the reduced ports group than the conventional ports group at 2 and 3 months follow-up (P < .001 and P = .032, respectively). Conclusion: Reduced ports laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is safe and feasible in patients with body mass index (BMI) up to 50 kg/m2. It is cosmetically well appreciated with noticeable patient satisfaction. It should be practiced with regularity. Further trials should be considered in patients with high BMI (>50 kg/m2).

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the effect of 38% SDF and its serial dilutions on the Stem cells from Human Exfoliated Deciduous teeth (SHED) and its ability to release growth factors from deciduous dentine. METHODS: The viability of SHED post-exposure to 38%, 3.8%, 0.38%, 0.038%, and 0.0038% SDF were assessed at 2, 5, and 7 days using the CyQuant assay, and results were validated using the MTT assay. The osteogenic differentiation of the cells was also investigated post-exposure to 0.0038% SDF. The release of the growth factors; TGF-ß1, FGF-b, BMP-2, and VEGF from deciduous dentin discs exposed to 38% SDF, 0.0038% SDF, Ca(OH)2, MTA, and 17% EDTA were examined using ELISA. Statistical analysis was performed using means and standard deviations (p < 0.05). Two-way ANOVA compared the means of more than two groups with Tukey's multiple comparison test. The unpaired t-test was also used to compare the differences between the two data sets. CONCLUSION: 38% SDF released dentinogenic growth factors from dentin discs, potentially explaining its role in reactionary dentinogenesis. Moreover, 0.0038% SDF resulted in a non-cytotoxic concentration that enhanced cellular proliferation and released bioactive molecules from dentin comparable to the 38% concentration. After further investigations, the 0.0038% dilution of SDF could present itself as a clinical concentration.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to investigate the levels of radon gas and increase public awareness of its hazards to health in Bethlehem governorate- Palestine. The concentrations of radon-222 and radium- 226 in 79 different types of water samples were measured. The average values of radon and radium concentrations in tap water, rainwater, groundwater, and mineral water samples were 0.93 Bq/ℓ and 45.5 Bq/kg, 1.01 Bq/ℓ and 49.3 Bq/kg, 1.21 Bq/ℓ and 59.3 Bq/kg, and 0.60 Bq/ℓ and 29.2 Bq/kg, respectively. All the measured radon concentrations in the collected samples were within the limit of 11 Bq/ℓ established by UNSCEAR in 1982. The annual effective doses for ingestion and inhalation due to radon in water were calculated for adults, children, and infants using parameters introduced by UNSCEAR in 2000. The results show that there is no significant risk to public health from radon inhalation or ingestion through drinking water in the study region.

RESUMO

An efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of novel α-aminophosphonates (AAP) (3 a-m) through a one-pot three-component reaction of 1,3-disubstituted-1H-pyrazol-5-amine, aromatic aldehydes, and phosphite using lithium perchlorate as catalyst. All newly synthesized compounds were characterized via different spectroscopic techniques. The synthesized compounds' mode of action was investigated using molecular docking against the outer membrane protein A (OMPA) and exo-1,3-ß-glucanase, with interpreting their pharmacokinetics aspects. The results of the antimicrobial effectiveness of these compounds revealed a broad spectrum of their biocidal activity and this in-vitro study was in line with the in- silico results. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that these compounds exhibited a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) with significant activity at low concentrations (7.5-30.0 mg/mL). Further, the radical scavenging (DPPH* ) activity of the synthesized compounds fluctuated, with compounds 3 h, 3 a, and 3 f showing the highest antioxidant activity. Overall, the formulated compounds can be employed as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents in medical applications.

RESUMO

Photonics in the frequency range of 5-15 terahertz (THz) potentially open a new realm of quantum materials manipulation and biosensing. This range, sometimes called "the new terahertz gap", is traditionally difficult to access due to prevalent phonon absorption bands in solids. Low-loss phonon-polariton materials may realize sub-wavelength, on-chip photonic devices, but typically operate in mid-infrared frequencies with narrow bandwidths and are difficult to manufacture on a large scale. Here, for the first time, quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 enables broadband surface phonon-polaritonic devices in 7-13 THz. As a proof of concept, polarization-independent field concentrators are designed and fabricated to locally enhance intense, multicycle THz pulses by a factor of 6 and increase the spectral intensity by over 90 times. The time-resolved electric field inside the concentrators is experimentally measured by THz-field-induced second harmonic generation. Illuminated by a table-top light source, the average field reaches 0.5 GV m-1 over a large volume resolvable by far-field optics. These results potentially enable scalable THz photonics with high breakdown fields made of various commercially available phonon-polariton crystals for studying driven phases in quantum materials and nonlinear molecular spectroscopy.
