RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of chest X-ray to that of thoracic computed tomography (CT) for the detection of the causes of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SP). METHODS: A prospective cohort of patients with SP was studied. All chest X-ray and CT examinations of the patients were reviewed retrospectively by an expert radiologist blinded to clinical data. The concordance between the CT examination and chest X-ray was assessed using the Cohen Kappa coefficient (κ), based on a bootstrap resampling method. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients with SP were included. There were 78 men and 27 women, with a mean age of 34.5 years±14.2 (SD) (range: 16-87 years). Of these, 44/105 (41%) patients had primary SP and 61/105 (59%) had secondary SP due to emphysema (47/61; 77%), tuberculosis (3/61, 5%), lymphangioleiomyomatosis (3/61; 5%), lung cancer (2/61, 3%) or other causes (6/61; 10%). Apart from pneumothorax, CT showed abnormal findings in 85/105 (81%) patients and chest X-ray in 29/105 (28%). Clinically relevant abnormalities were detected on 62/105 (59%) CT examinations. The concordance between chest X-ray and CT was fair for detecting emphysema (κ=0.39; 95% CI: 0.2420-0.55), moderate for a mass or nodule (κ=0.60; 95% CI: 0.28-0.90), fair for alveolar opacities (κ=0.39; 95% CI: -0.02-1.00), and slight for interstitial syndrome (κ=0.20; 95% CI: -0.02-0.85). CONCLUSION: Chest X-ray is not sufficient for detecting the cause of secondary SP. As the detection of the cause of secondary SP may alter the therapeutic approach and long-term follow-up in patients with SP, the usefulness of a systematic CT examination should be assessed in a prospective trial.

RESUMO

In a search for promising antifungal compounds, nine new 3,3'-ethylenebis(5-alkyl-1,3,5-thiadiazine-2-thiones) were synthesized by the reaction of ethylene diamine, carbon disulfide, formaldehyde, and the appropriate alkyl amine. The title compounds were tested for their antifungal activity in vitro against pathogenic (Trichophyton rubrum and Candida albicans), phytopathogenic (Penicillum expansum, Trichoderma hazianum, and Fasarium oxysporum), and aflatoxin producing (Aspergillus flavus) fungi. These compounds exhibited varied inhibitory effects on growth or sporulation of some tested fungal species.

RESUMO

Using zoospore capture technique, 361 colonies of aquatic freshwater fungi were recovered from sewage effluents, out of which 341 reached sexual maturity. These colonies were assigned to 21 species which belong to 9 genera. 67 species in addition to 2 varieties of terrestrial fungi which belong to 25 genera were also recovered.

RESUMO

Twenty-two species belonging to 11 genera of zoosporic fungi were collected from 10 freshwater sites and from five species of leeches on sesame and hemp seeds, maize grains and Pinus pollen grains as baits at 22 degrees C. Dictyuchus, Achlya, Pythium, Allomyces and Saprolegnia were the most common genera. The highest population of zoosporic fungi was estimated from Batracobdelloides tricarinata, the lowest from Barbronia assiuti. In addition fifty-three species and 1 variety representing 23 terrestrial fungal genera were identified on glucose (17 genera and 41 species) and cellulose (20 genera and 34 species + 1 variety) Czapek's Dox agar at 28 degrees C. The most common species on the two media were Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, A. flavus, Trichoderma harzianum, Gibberella fujikuroi and Penicillium chrysogenum. Some fungi were common only on cellulose agar medium such as Botryotrichum atrogriseum, Chaetomium bostrychodes, Dactylella alaskana and Drechslera halodes. Batracobdelloides tricarinata was the richest with terrestrial fungi whereas Salifa delicata was the poorest. Five leech species, namely Alboglossiphonia polypompholyx, Batracobdelloides tricarinata, Helobdella conifera, Barbronia assiuti and Salifa delicata were used during this investigation.

RESUMO

Ten identified species in addition to 2 unidentified species of Achlya and Pythium which belong to seven zoosporic fungal genera (aquatic freshwater fungi) were recovered during this investigation. The fish species with most zoosporic fungi (5 species and 3 genera) was Tilapia nilotica. The fish species with least fungi were Bagrus bayad and Syndontis schall (yielded only one species each). Mormyrus kannum did not give any zoosporic fungal species. Some aquatic fungi emerged only from internal organs of some fish species. 46 species belonging to 22 terrestrial fungal genera were also recovered during this work. The broadest spectrum (15 species) was recorded in the second external wash water (WE2) of Mormyrus kannum and the narrowest spectrum (2 species) in the second internal wash water (WI2) of Schilbe mystus and with the scales of Labeo niloticus. First wash water of internal organs (WI1) of Tilapia nilotica yielded the highest total count (6.95% of total count) and the second wash water of internal organs (WI2) of Schilbe mystus yielded the lowest total count (0.34% of total count). Nile water sample (NW) yielded 3.67% of total fungi and eight species which belong to seven genera. Aspergillus was the most common (31 out of 31 samples) and yielded 52.40% of total fungi. It was represented by 12 species and one variety of A. flavus var. columnaris (broadest spectrum). Penicillium was represented by 7 species and found in 19 out of 31 samples yielding 11.02% of total fungi.
