RESUMO

A feeding trial spanning two months was conducted to evaluate the effects of Chlamydomonas sp. on growth performance, water quality, survival, proximate composition and biochemical profile of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) where fishmeal was partially replaced using Chlamydomonas sp. in the diet. Twenty uniform-sized common carp fries were distributed into triplicate groups and placed in 40-liter rectangular glass tanks. Chlamydomonas sp. was added at different levels in the diet: 0 % (control), 5 % (C5), 10 % (C10), 15 % (C15) along with the commercial feed (CMF). After the experiment, random sampling of fish was performed to conduct all the analyses. Significant variations (p < 0.05) were found in the chemical water quality parameters. The highest survival rate was recorded from C15 (81.67 %) followed by C10 (71.67 %), CMF (63.33 %) and C5 (58.33 %) respectively compared with the control (43.2 %). There were significant differences (p < 0.05) observed among all the treatments in terms of Average Daily Gains (ADG), Specific Growth Rate (SGR) and length increments. Protein content ranged the highest and the lowest in C15 (35.6 %) and control (24.8 %) respectively. The C15 group showed the highest lipid content (15.7 %) and the control group showed the lowest lipid (8.4 %). The inclusion of Chlamydomonas sp. in the diet had a significant positive impact on the fatty acid and amino acid profile of whole common carp. Present data revealed that substituting a portion of fishmeal with Chlamydomonas sp. powder could provide higher growth performance, offering both nutritional benefits and higher survival rate in common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

RESUMO

Background: In India, the cosmetics industry has expanded significantly because of changing lifestyles and increased awareness. In terms of earning the most money from the personal care and cosmetics industry in 2021, India is ranked fourth globally. Many cosmetics sold in India include ingredients that cannot be used on humans. Objective: To assess knowledge, attitudes, and practice toward the uses of cosmetics and cosmetovigilance in India. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, from April to May 2022, among the general population living in the Delhi NCR region, India. Study questionnaires (printed and survey link) were distributed in public as well as at workplaces for the survey. Results: Around 268 (54.78%) females and 223 (45.21%) males participated in the survey. Amongst the total respondents - 407 (83%) agreed that they are using cosmetic products on a daily basis, females 229 (85.44%), being the majority users compared to males 178 (80%), with a significant P value = 0.011. Most of the people reported side effects of shampoos - 7.13% (hair fall, hair thinning, dryness of the scalp, itching), followed by allergic reactions to moisturizers - 5.70%. Conclusion: Because of the right safety and effectiveness mentorship of cosmetics, regulatory agencies and stakeholders should adopt this broadly. Cosmetovigilance needs to be put into practice.

RESUMO

Effective restoration strategies play a crucial role in mitigating the environmental impact of mining and colliery activities while promoting ecological resilience and rejuvenating ecosystem services. However, many organizations find it challenging to understand and balance their efforts in restoring degraded lands. For example, their restoration plans lack clarity and overlook relevant ecosystem services. This study reviews and focuses on the potential restoration of ecosystem services at TATA Steel's Noamundi Iron Ore Mine and West Bokaro Colliery to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG-15, for localization. The approach involved assessing the number of preventive measures being implemented to restore a particular ecosystem service. Moreover, the potential of each preventive measure is to restore that ecosystem service. The findings underscore the significance of preventive measures and comprehensive restoration plans in enhancing carbon sequestration, soil fertility, habitat creation, and genetic diversity conservation. Our results showed that the impact scores and ranks of various ecosystem services demonstrate the positive effects of restoration efforts, emphasizing the importance of reestablishing forests, restoring water bodies and wetlands, and allocating land for agriculture and public use. The research provides valuable insights for decision-makers in developing sustainable land management strategies, ensuring biodiversity conservation and local communities' well-being. By prioritizing ecosystem services in restoration initiatives, stakeholders can contribute to the sustainable management of natural resources and foster a harmonious coexistence between human activities and the environment.

RESUMO

Introduction: A substantial percentage of patients undergoing bariatric surgery are of childbearing age. Pregnancy outcomes after bariatric surgery are known. However, there are limited data on the impact of pregnancy on weight loss after surgery. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effects of pregnancy on post-bariatric surgery weight loss trajectories (WLTs) and to determine the association with age and initial weight. Methods: All who had primary bariatric surgeries (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve) between September 2015 and July 2020 were classified into two groups: post-surgery gravid (GG) and post-surgery non-gravid (NG). WLTs were examined using a random intercept mixed-effects model with repeated measures nested within patients. The post-surgery/pre-gravid time phase (PoPG) was modelled using a third-degree polynomial. For GG, two third-degree spline functions modelled the post-surgery while gravid (PoWG) and post-partum (PoPP) time phases. Age and initial weight were used to control for pre-existing differences during PoPG. Weight differences at 6 months PoPP were examined by applying general linear hypothesis testing to the mixed-model results. Results: A total of 508 patients were included, 20 in GG and 488 in NG. The mean age at surgery was 33 years in GG and 37 years in NG. The mean initial BMI was 47 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2, respectively. During PoPG, adjusted average weight in both groups follows the path across time. For GG, weight decreases and then increases during PoWG. For GG during PoPP, weight immediately decreases after delivery and then increases over time to levels similar to NG. Weight differences at 6 months PoPP for GG and NG were not statistically different. Older age was associated with reduced weight loss during PoPG by Baseline Age, while higher initial weight was associated with increased weight loss during PoPG by Baseline Weight. In both instances, these effects attenuate over time. Conclusions: This model indicates that pregnancy following bariatric surgery affects WLT during PoWG and PoPP, and no difference in weight is expected after 6 months post-gravid. Age and initial weight could be considered prognostic factors during PoPG. Patients wishing to conceive should undergo preconception counselling and be advised to avoid pregnancy during the period of rapid weight loss. They also should be informed that WLT may vary during pregnancy and early post-partum.

RESUMO

Introduction: Although sevoflurane and desflurane have nearly identical blood-gas solubilities, current research suggests that airway reflexes recover more quickly with desflurane than sevoflurane; however, cognitive function recovery varies substantially. The current study was piloted to appraise the lengths of time needed to recover from anesthesia following desflurane and sevoflurane anesthesia. Materials and Methods: A prospective clinical trial was piloted among 70 adult non-obese subjects who underwent elective surgery and were classified I-II by the "American Association of Anesthesiologists (ASA)". Sevoflurane and desflurane were tested among the subjects who were equally distributed. These agents were used in accordance with a normal general anaesthesia procedure. After they were extubated, tests for regaining cognitive function and airway reflexes were carried out, and different time intervals were recorded. The observations were calculated and P < 0.05 was used to conduct the statistical analysis. Results: The average amount of time that passed between the patient's first vocal response and their first successful completion of the swallowing test was analogous between the two groups (T2) with 5.25 ± 3.11 vs 5.01 ± 2.12 in sevoflurane and desflurane, respectively. There was no significant variance at T2. For all the other time intervals of T1, T3, and T4, there was evidence of the significant variance.(P = 0.003; 0.0013; <0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Desflurane causes patients to recover more quickly than sevoflurane does after laparoscopic cholecystectomy under controlled circumstances.

RESUMO

This article examines the role of legal structure in explaining financial development in twenty-three emerging markets, which has not been explored in institutional economics literature before. This study relied on Pedroni, and Kao cointegration tests, which is followed by the renowned panel cointegration technique. The results of the Pedroni and Kao cointegration tests show that the variables understudy is cointegrated in the long-run. These findings are confirmed by the panel cointegration showing that legal structure (LS) has positive impact on financial development (FIND) in long-run that support Law and Finance, and New Institutional Economics theories in emerging markets. This study is the first to directly examine the long-run impact of LS on FIND in emerging markets, and the result remains consistent across alternative measure of FIND. The findings of this study have important policy implications for emerging markets. Policymakers should focus on creating a legal environment that is conducive to financial development. This includes strengthening the legal framework, improving regulatory regimes, and promoting market autonomy. Additionally, policymakers should work to attract foreign investment, which can help spur economic growth and development in emerging markets. The findings of the study are consistent across battery of robustness testing.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the difference in retention between implant-supported restorations with and without surface modification of the implant abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with singletooth implants were restored with cement-retained (Multilink N, Ivoclar) restorations using titanium base abutments (Variobase, Straumann) and randomly assigned surface modifications. Group 1 used nonmodified abutments, group 2 used sandblasted abutments, and group 3 used sandblasted abutments followed by an application of metal primer. All patients were recalled for a baseline examination 6 months after crown placement. The pull-out strength and intergroup distribution of mean pull-out strength were assessed. To assess differences between the three groups, intergroup statistical comparison of continuous variables was done using one-way ANOVA with Tukey correction for multiple group comparisons. RESULTS: The results of the intergroup mean pull-out strength distribution revealed that the distribution of mean ± SD pull-out strength in group 1, group 2, and group 3 were 220.79 ± 94.23, 488.64 ± 84.12, and 705.46 ± 112.75 Ncm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Sandblasting followed by the application of metal primer produced the highest retention of porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns to titanium base abutments, followed by sandblasting alone, with the least retention being observed with no surface treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Triamcinolone acetonide injections (TAIs) have been suggested to decrease complications following rhinoplasty. This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of TAIs following rhinoplasty. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search on Medline, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to May 2023, without any timeframe limitations. The following terms were used: (Triamcinolone OR steroid injections OR triamcinolone acetonide) AND (Skin thickness OR supratip edema OR supratip deformity OR Pollybeak deformity) AND (rhinoplasty OR external rhinoplasty). We included randomized controlled trials and observational studies (prospective, retrospective, and case series). RESULTS: In total, six of the 1604 articles met our inclusion criteria. A total of 1524 patients were included in this study. Our results included patient demographics, type of rhinoplasty, post-injection follow-up period, site of injection, type of syringe used, timing of the first dose, volume and concentration used, time interval between doses, response to the injection, and complications of injection. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review to address this issue. Our results demonstrate the ease and safety of TAIs as a first-line treatment, with positive outcomes and limited complications. TAIs can be used early postoperatively to minimize the need for revision surgery. Despite the limited number of studies on TAIs, this study provides the best available evidence that can help surgeons decide when to use the injection, the intervals between doses, and the duration of use. Further randomized controlled trials are required to confirm our findings. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE II: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMO

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is frequently encountered across various specialties. The management of VTE has become more nuanced, requiring consideration of several factors when deciding on the choice and duration of anticoagulation. This evidence-based review article summarises the current practice and evidence behind anticoagulation in VTE, incorporating national and international guidelines. Factors influencing decision-making around the choice and duration of anticoagulation, along with special circumstances such as cancer and antiphospholipid syndrome, are discussed. The clinical utility of thrombophilia screening is also addressed.

RESUMO

The study was conducted to compare the quality and shelf life of traditionally dried (collected from the local markets) Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus) with improved dried products (produced using a newly developed fish dryer) to assess its suitability. The quality of these products was evaluated through organoleptic, water reconstitution, nutritional, chemical, and microbiological characteristics. The organoleptic quality of improved dried fish was excellent while those produced traditionally were with grayish and dark brown color, rancid odor, and soft and fragile texture with insect infestation. The water reconstitution properties of the improved dried sample were 75.71% and 89.39% at room temperature and 80 °C, respectively, which were comparatively higher than the traditional dried products. The protein, ash, and contents were significantly higher in improved dried fish products while the lipid and total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N) content were much lower than those of market-dried samples. The total viable counts (TVC) of bacteria were significantly higher in the traditional products which indicated poor quality. To find out the best storage method, dried fish was kept at three different conditions: in the open air at room temperature, in a sealed pack at room temperature, and a sealed pack at refrigeration temperature (4 °C). The shelf life of the products in different storage conditions was evaluated by estimating their moisture, protein, lipid, ash, TVB-N, and TVC values. The products kept at 4 °C temperature was found almost unaltered in terms of their nutritional properties after 4-months storage period. Results indicated that the newly developed fish dryer produced high-quality dried fish products with longer shelf life can be expected if the dried fish is stored at 4 °C refrigeration temperature. Our findings will be a valuable tool for the fish processors to ease the fish drying process and its storage that will enable them to commercially supply good quality dried Harpodon nehereus in the market chain at a low-cost.

RESUMO

Research has shown that relying only on self-reports for diagnosing psychiatric disorders does not yield accurate results at all times. The advances of technology as well as artificial intelligence and other machine learning algorithms have allowed the introduction of point of care testing (POCT) including EEG characterization and correlations with possible psychopathology. Nonlinear methods of EEG analysis have significant advantages over linear methods. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is a reliable nonlinear method of EEG pre-processing. In this chapter, we compare two existing EEG complexity measures - Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD) and sample entropy (SE), with our newly proposed method using Higuchi fractal dimension from the Hilbert Huang transform (HFD-HHT). We present an example using the three complexity measures on a 2-minute EEG recorded from a healthy 20-year-old male after signal pre-processing. Furthermore, we showed the usefulness of these complexity measures in the classification of major depressive disorder (MDD) with healthy controls. Our study is in line with previous research and has shown an increase in HFD and SE values in the full, alpha and beta frequency bands suggestive of an increase in EEG irregularity. Moreover, the HFD-HHT values decreased in those three bands for majority of electrodes which is suggestive of a decrease in irregularity in the frequency-time domain. We conclude that all three complexity measures can be vital features useful for EEG analysis which could be incorporated in POCT systems.

RESUMO

This umbrella review synthesizes data from 17 meta-analyses investigating the comparative outcomes of catheter ablation (CA) and medical treatment (MT) for atrial fibrillation (AF). Outcomes assessed were mortality, risk of hospitalization, AF recurrence, cardiovascular events, pulmonary vein stenosis, major bleeding, and changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and MLHFQ score. The findings indicate that CA significantly reduces overall mortality and cardiovascular hospitalization with high strength of evidence. The risk of AF recurrence was notably lower with CA, with moderate strength of evidence. Two associations reported an increased risk of pulmonary vein stenosis and major bleeding with CA, supported by high strength of evidence. Improved LVEF and a positive change in MLHFQ were also associated with CA. Among patients with AF and heart failure, CA appears superior to MT for reducing mortality, improving LVEF, and reducing cardiovascular rehospitalizations. In nonspecific populations, CA reduced mortality and improved LVEF but had higher complication rates. Our findings suggest that CA might offer significant benefits in managing AF, particularly in patients with heart failure. However, the risk of complications, including pulmonary vein stenosis and major bleeding, is notable. Further research in understudied populations may help refine these conclusions.

RESUMO

Chronic non-specific neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions affecting the work and lifestyle of those suffering from it. Physiotherapy interventions, such as strength training and stretching, have positively influenced neck pain. Patient adherence to home-based exercises is a growing concern that could be easily improved through telerehabilitation exercise programmes. This can also be a cost-effective, time-efficient and patient-suitable service. Therefore, this study aims to establish the effectiveness of telerehabilitation exercise intervention by measuring patient adherence, pain score, disability index, cervical range of motion (CROM) and cervical muscle endurance. This randomised controlled trial will include n=60 participants, aged 18-45 years, in a 6-week home-based exercise programme delivered through telerehabilitation or paper-based instructions. Outcome measures from participants will be obtained at baseline and on completion of 6 weeks. These will include the Visual Analogue Scale for Pain, Neck Disability Index questionnaire, CROM by using the CROM instrument and cervical muscle endurance through the Craniocervical Flexion Test. For baseline differences between groups, an independent samples t-test will be used. Repeated measures analysis of variance will be used for within-group and between-group analyses at three different time points (0 weeks, 3 weeks, 6 weeks). Trial registration number:NCT06076174.

RESUMO

In recent years, research into Parkinson's disease and similar neurodegenerative disorders has increasingly suggested that these conditions are synonymous with failures in proteostasis. However, the spotlight of this research has remained firmly focused on the tail end of proteostasis, primarily aggregation, misfolding, and degradation, with protein translation being comparatively overlooked. Now, there is an increasing body of evidence supporting a potential role for translation in the pathogenesis of PD, and its dysregulation is already established in other similar neurodegenerative conditions. In this paper, we consider how altered protein translation fits into the broader picture of PD pathogenesis, working hand in hand to compound the stress placed on neurons, until this becomes irrecoverable. We will also consider molecular players of interest, recent evidence that suggests that aggregates may directly influence translation in PD progression, and the implications for the role of protein translation in our development of clinically useful diagnostics and therapeutics.

RESUMO

Introduction: Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students in healthcare-related courses are exposed to various challenging experiences compared to their White counterparts, not only in the UK (United Kingdom) but across the globe. Underachieving, stereotyping, racial bias, and cultural differences, among other experiences, hinder their medical education, practice, and attainment. This review aimed to explore and understand the experiences of BAME students enrolled in healthcare related courses in the United Kingdom. Methods: Computerised bibliographic search was carried out using MeSH and free text descriptors via PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and Science Direct for eligible English-published studies exploring BAME experiences in the UK from 2010-2023. Results: A cumulative total of 813 studies were obtained from the literature search, of which five met the inclusion criteria. Quality assessment for risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa scale, yielding one study of satisfactory quality, while four were deemed to be of good quality. Conclusion: BAME students pursuing health-related courses across the UK. face a range of experiences, including racial discrimination, unconscious bias, and a lack of representation and support. Additionally, BAME students are more likely to report incidents of racial harassment and withdraw from their respective courses as well as experiencing mental health issues due to their experiences.

RESUMO

Electrical energy is often wasted through human negligence when people do not switch off electrical appliances such as lighting after leaving a place. Such a scenario often happens in a classroom when the last person leaves the class and forgets to switch off the electrical appliances. Such wastage may not be able to be afforded by schools that are limited financially. Therefore, this research proposed a simple and cost-effective system that can analyze whether there is or is not a human presence in the classroom by applying a counter to count the total number of people entering and leaving the classroom based on the sensing signals of a set of dual PIR sensors only and then correlating this to automatically turn on or off the electrical appliances mentioned. The total number of people identified in the classroom is also displayed on an LCD screen. A TRIZ approach is used to support the ideation of the system. The system can switch on several electrical output loads simultaneously when the presence of people is detected and switch them off when there are no people in the classroom. The proposed system can be expanded to be used in homes, offices, and buildings to prevent the high cost of electricity consumption caused by the negligence of people. This enables smarter control of electricity consumption.

RESUMO

Over 20% of E. coli O157 illnesses and over 5% of Salmonella illnesses are estimated to be attributable to beef consumption in the United States. Irradiating ground beef is one possible method to reduce disease burden. We simulated the effect of ground beef irradiation on illnesses, hospitalizations, deaths, and direct healthcare costs from ground beef-associated E. coli O157 and Salmonella illnesses in the United States. To estimate the fraction of illnesses, hospitalizations, deaths, and direct healthcare costs preventable by ground beef irradiation, we multiplied the disease burden attributable to ground beef; the estimated percentage of ground beef sold that is not currently irradiated; the percentage of unirradiated ground beef that would be irradiated; and the percentage reduction in risk of illness after irradiation. We multiplied this fraction by estimates of burden and direct healthcare costs to calculate the numbers or amounts averted. Model inputs were obtained from the literature and expert opinion. We used Monte Carlo simulation to incorporate uncertainty in inputs into model estimates. Simulation outcomes were summarized with means and 95% uncertainty intervals (UI). Irradiating 50% of the currently unirradiated ground beef supply would avert 3,285 (95% UI: 624-9,977) E. coli O157 illnesses, 135 (95% UI: 24-397) hospitalizations, 197 (95% UI: 34-631) hemolytic uremic syndrome cases, 2 (95% UI: 0-16) deaths, and $2,972,656 (95% UI: $254,708-$14,496,916) in direct healthcare costs annually. For Salmonella, irradiation would avert 20,308 (95% UI: 9,858-38,903) illnesses, 400 (95% UI: 158-834) hospitalizations, 6 (95% UI: 0-18) deaths, and $7,318,632 (95% UI: $1,436,141-$26,439,493) in direct healthcare costs. Increasing ground beef irradiation could reduce E. coli O157 and Salmonella burden in the United States. Additional studies should assess whether targeted irradiation of higher-risk ground beef products could prevent similar numbers of illnesses with less total product irradiated.

RESUMO

The Fusarium verticillioides produces a mycotoxin, that is, fumonisin b1 (Fb1), which commonly infects corn and agricultural commodities. The Fb1 showed hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and carcinogenicity in animals. Hence, the present investigation aimed to evaluate the effect of apocynin (AP) on Fb1-induced neurotoxic effects and its mechanism in the mice model and cell line. The male Balb/c mice, with the 6.75 mg/kg bwt of Fb1 were injected subcutaneously for 5 days to induce neurotoxicity. A significant elevation of serotonin (5-HT) was observed in mice treated with Fb1 in the whole brain showing biogenic amines may reflect Fb1 neurotoxicity, but the negatively regulated mechanisms were attenuated by the pretreatment of AP. In addition, AP pretreatment normalized apoptotic changes in histology and immunohistochemistry studies. In Western blotting studies, apoptotic genes were upregulated and oxidative stress genes were downregulated due to Fb1 treatment; while treating with AP, these gene expressions were rectified. Further cell cytotoxicity was investigated by MTT and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays in SH-SY5Y cell line. MTT and LDH assays indicated the IC50 value to be 150 µM of Fb1, which was protected by 100 µg of AP. The electron microscopy evaluated the Fb1-induced apoptotic conditions and its cell morphology recovery by AP. These results suggest that nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate hydrogen oxidase-mediated reactive oxygen species is the primary upstream signal leading to increased Fb1-mediated neurotoxicity in mice. The use of the antioxidant AP reversed the toxin-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis by its antioxidant potency.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The larynx is lined by specialized epithelial cell populations. Studying molecular changes occurring in individual epithelial cell types requires a reliable method for removing these cells from the larynx. Our objective was to develop a method to harvest individual epithelial cells from the mouse larynx while minimizing contamination from non-laryngeal sites and non-epithelial laryngeal cells. METHODS: Mice were euthanized, and the larynx was carefully exposed and separated from non-laryngeal sites. A small dental brush was inserted into the laryngeal inlet and rotated to obtain epithelial cells. Cells were transferred to collection media, counted, and cytospin preparations stained for laryngeal epithelial (i.e., Pan-Keratin, EpCAM, NGFR, p63, K5, ß-tubulin, MUC5AC) and non-epithelial (i.e., vimentin) cell markers. Histopathology was completed on brushed laryngeal tissue sections to evaluate the depth of cell collection. Preliminary Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was performed to confirm this method can capture diverse laryngeal cell types. RESULTS: We collected 6000-8000 cells from a single larynx and 35000-40000 cells from combining brushings from three tissues. Histopathology demonstrated brushing removed the epithelial layer of the larynx and some underlying tissue. Immunofluorescence staining demonstrated the phenotype of harvested cells was primarily epithelial. Preliminary scRNA-seq was successfully conducted and displayed nine unique cell clusters. CONCLUSION: We developed a reliable method of harvesting individual epithelial cells from the mouse larynx. This method will be useful for collection of laryngeal cells for a variety of downstream cellular and molecular assays, including scRNA-seq, protein analyses, and cell-culture-based experiments, following laryngeal injury.
