RESUMO

Objectives: This investigation aimed to compare caffeinated gums with two different dosages of caffeine (200mg vs. 300mg) by assessing their effectiveness on the improvement of cognitive functions among Iranian individuals voluntarily suffering from 30 hours of sleep deprivation. Material and Methods: Thirty-four healthy male volunteers with ages from 28 to 35 years old were randomly assigned to either 200 or 300mg caffeine intake. Each participant completed CANTAB subtests to assess their core cognitive functions including MOT, RTI, RVP, and SWM before and after sleep deprivation, as well as after being treated with caffeinated gum. Results: The 300mg caffeine intake group indicated higher levels of enhancement of core cognitive functions compared with those in the 200mg caffeine intake group. Conclusion: This study suggests that the dose of 300mg of caffeine could effectively enhance the cognitive functions of Iranian individuals suffering from sleep deprivation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sleep is an inseparable part of human health and life, which is crucial in learning, practice, as well as physical and mental health. It affects the capacity of individual learning, academic performance, and neural-behavioral functions. This study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and students' academic achievement among students at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 102 medical students from different fields, with maximum variation sampling, completed Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). For data analysis, SPSS 19 was used through which Pearson correlation test, Spearman test, and t-test were employed. RESULTS: Based on the quality of sleep questionnaire scores, the results indicated no significant difference between students with high grades and those with low grades. However, there were moderate and sometimes severe sleep disturbances in both groups. CONCLUSION: The results showed no significant difference between sleep quality and academic achievement. Nevertheless, longitudinal study should be performed to control for confounding factors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is no population based study about prevalence of psychiatric conditions in Kermanshah. A screening study reported the rate of 39.1% for psychiatric disorders. METHODS: This is the second phase of a larger study. From those with a positive screening, 15% were randomly selected and interviewed face-to-face at home by trained clinical psychologists with Farsi version of the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV (SCID) I and II. RESULTS: The original sample was 2102 participants, from those 319 individuals were interviewed. Only 15 participants (4.7% of the positively screened sample) had a negative result. Major depressive disorder (8.3%), generalized anxiety disorder (4.7%), obsessive compulsive disorder (4.6%) and obsessive compulsive personality disorder (3.3%) were the most common disorders diagnosed within this sample. CONCLUSION: This population based study gives prevalence rates for psychiatric disorders in Kermanshah for the first time. Results can be the basis for health care policy makers and further studies.
