RESUMO

Understanding the physical properties of organic-inorganic hybrid [NH(CH3)3]2ZnCl4 is necessary for its potential application in batteries and fuel cells due to its environmentally-friendly, and highly stable character. Here, we determine its overall properties in detail, such as its orthorhombic crystal structure, and phase transition temperatures associated with five different phases. Structural geometry was studied by the chemical shifts caused by the local field around 1H. No changes were observed for the environment around 1H for CH3, whereas the 1H chemical shifts around NH in the cation were shown due to the change in the hydrogen bond N‒H···Cl. This is related to the change in Cl around Zn in the anion. In addition, the coordination geometry of 14N and 1H around 13C exhibited increased symmetry at high temperatures. Finally, we were able to understand its molecular dynamics by the significant change with temperature observed from the spin-lattice relaxation time T1ρ values, which represent the energy transfer for the 1H and 13C atoms of the cation. The activation energies obtained from the T1ρ results were 3-4 times large at phase I (> 348 K) than at phase V and IV (< 286 K). The relaxations show that the energy barriers in phases IV and V are related to the reorientation of methyl groups around the triple symmetry axis, while the reorientation of methyl groups of the cation in phase I is related to as a whole.

RESUMO

Recently, sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted great attention because of their excellent safety and high energy density. However, by-products formed from side-reactions between the oxide-based cathodes and sulfide-based solid electrolytes (SEs) increase the interfacial resistance and degrade the cell performance. Suppression of this interfacial resistance is thus critical. In this study, the extraordinarily high stability of the cathode/SE interface is discovered when a Li10 SnP2 S12 (LSnPS) is applied to a cathode buffer layer. The electrochemical properties of the cathode interface at high potential are improved by synthesizing a core-shell structure cathode using LSnPS. The synthesized LSnPS is uniformly coated on a Li2 ZrO3 -coated LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 (LZO-NCM) surface using the cost-efficient mechano-fusion method. The ASSB with LSnPS-coated LZO-NCM as the cathode and Li6 PS5 Cl (argyrodite, LPSCl) as the SE exhibited a capacity of 192 mAh g-1 and excellent cycle retention of ≈75% after 500 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the degradation mechanism at the cathode/SE interface is investigated. The results indicated that LSnPS stabilizes the interface between NCM and argyrodite, thereby inhibiting the decomposition of the SE. This technology is expected to contribute to the commercialization of cathode materials for sulfide-based ASSBs due to its enhanced cycle performance, low-cost material application, and eco-friendly process.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that an elevated prehospital National Early Warning Score (preNEWS) is associated with increased levels of adverse outcomes in patients with trauma. However, whether preNEWS is a predictor of massive transfusion (MT) in patients with trauma is currently unknown. This study investigated the accuracy of preNEWS in predicting MT and hospital mortality among trauma patients. METHODS: We analyzed adult trauma patients who were treated and transported by emergency medical services (EMS) between January 2018 and December 2019. The main exposure was the preNEWS calculated for the scene. The primary outcome was the predictive ability for MT, and the secondary outcome was 24 h mortality. We compared the prognostic performance of preNEWS with the shock index, modified shock index, and reverse shock index, and reverse shock index multiplied by Glasgow Coma Scale in the prehospital setting. RESULTS: In total, 41,852 patients were included, and 1456 (3.5%) received MT. preNEWS showed the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve for predicting MT (0.8504; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.840-0.860) and 24 h mortality (AUROC 0.873; 95% CI, 0.863-0.883). The sensitivity of preNEWS for MT was 0.755, and the specificity of preNEWS for MT was 0.793. All indicies had a high negative predictive value and low positive predictive value. CONCLUSION: preNEWS is a useful, rapid predictor for MT and 24 h mortality. Calculation of preNEWS would be helpful for making the decision at the scene such as transfer straightforward to trauma center and advanced treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Janus kinase (Jak) 3 has recently been shown as a beneficial target for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis and alopecia areata. The role of Jak3 in tissue repair and remodeling is emerging. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the role of Jak3 signaling in the remodeling of the sebaceous gland (SG) during skin wound repair, and the development of in vitro SGs. METHODS: Mouse skin tissue (ICR mouse) was obtained from the recovered skin eight days after a 4 mm biopsy punch wound. To observe the role of Jak3, the selective inhibitors WHI-p131 and PF06651600 was administered. Formation of in vitro SG was examined using primary sebocyte cultures obtained postnatally from 3-day-old mice. RESULTS: The data showed that SGs showed highly positive signals with anti-isolectin B4, which also used for detection of angiogenetic vessels and the basal epidermis. Isolectin B4 could be a good indicator of SGs. The Jak3 inhibitors significantly reduced the area and volume of SG remodeling with reduced expression of p-Jak3. In addition, the area of cultured intact SG in vitro was significantly decreased in a concentration-dependent manner by Jak3 inhibition. CONCLUSION: These data showed that Jak3 signaling is a potent regulator to develop SGs. Jak3 inhibition did not decrease the number of sebocytes in SGs but decreased the area and volume of SG remodeling. Therefore, Jak3 inhibition may be a potential target for the treatment of SG hyperplasia and associated skin diseases.

RESUMO

Polyamic acid (PAA) was synthesized using the diamine monomer N,N'-[2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4'-biphenylene]bis(4-aminobenzamide) and dianhydride monomer 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride. Colorless and transparent poly(amide imide) (CPAI) hybrid films were prepared via multi-step thermal imidization of PAA in which various contents of nano-filler were dispersed. The CPAI hybrid films were prepared by dispersing organoclay STN, which was obtained by organically modifying hectorite, in CPAI by solution intercalation with various contents ranging from 1 to 7 wt%. The thermomechanical properties, morphologies, and optical transparencies of the obtained CPAI hybrid films were investigated based on the dispersed STN content, and the results were compared. Some of the clay in the CPAI hybrid film were agglomerated, which was observed using a transmission electron microscope; however, most clays were well-dispersed, with a nano-size of less than 10 nm. The best thermomechanical properties of the CPAI hybrid film were exhibited with an STN content of 3 wt%, but these properties decreased above the critical content. The coefficients of thermal expansion of all the hybrid films were below 20 ppm per °C regardless of the amount of STN, and the yellow index was 1-2 even when the STN content increased to 7 wt%.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The endangered longhorn beetle Callipogon (Eoxenus) relictus, which was designated as a natural monument since 1968 in Korea is still attracting public concern because of its extraordinary body size. Although mitochondrial genome data of this species was reported using Korean individual in 2017, start codon of cox1 is controversial and the secondary structures of transfer RNAs have not been illustrated. OBJECTIVE: To report complete mitochondrial genome of Callipogon (Eoxenus) relictus from Chinese breed. METHODS: We used dissected muscle tissues from an adult of Callipogon (Eoxenus) relictus. A total of 19,276,266,645 bp from 127,657,395 reads were generated. The raw reads were assembled to mitochondrial genome data and annotated. Folded structures of transfer RNAs were drawn. Phylogenetic relationships were estimated by maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses. RESULTS: The mitochondrial genome of C. relictus was 15,745 bp in length and composed of 37 genes including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNAs, and 22 transfer RNAs. The overall base composition was 38.40% for A, 30.98% for T, 11.06% for G, and 19.56% for C. Most transfer RNAs were folded into the typical clover-leaf structure except trnS1. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed the monophyletic status of each subfamily. CONCLUSION: Mitochondrial genome composition was consistent with previous research, however, we suggest another start codon of cox1 gene and provide illustrated secondary structures of transfer RNAs. Phylogenetic analyses showed that subfamilies Cerambycinae and Prioninae are closely related.

RESUMO

Polydnaviruses (PDVs) exhibit species-specific mutualistic relationships with endoparasitoid wasps. PDVs can be categorized into bracoviruses and ichnoviruses, which have independent evolutionary origins. In our previous study, we identified an ichnovirus of the endoparasitoid Diadegma fenestrale and named it DfIV. Here, DfIV virions from the ovarian calyx of gravid female wasps were characterized. DfIV virion particles were ellipsoidal (246.5 nm × 109.0 nm) with a double-layered envelope. Next-generation sequencing of the DfIV genome revealed 62 non-overlapping circular DNA segments (A1-A5, B1-B9, C1-C15, D1-D23, E1-E7, and F1-F3); the aggregate genome size was approximately 240 kb, and the GC content (43%) was similar to that of other IVs (41%-43%). A total of 123 open reading frames were predicted and included typical IV gene families such as repeat element protein (41 members), cysteine motif (10 members), vankyrin (9 members), polar residue-rich protein (7 members), vinnexin (6 members), and N gene (3 members). Neuromodulin N (2 members) was found to be unique to DfIV, along with 45 hypothetical genes. Among the 62 segments, 54 showed high (76%-98%) sequence similarities to the genome of Diadegma semiclausum ichnovirus (DsIV). Three segments, namely, D22, E3, and F2, contained lepidopteran host genome integration motifs with homologous regions of about 36-46 bp between them (Diadegma fenestrale ichnovirus, DfIV and lepidopteran host, Plutella xylostella). Most of the DfIV genes were expressed in the hymenopteran host and some in the lepidopteran host (P. xylostella), parasitized by D. fenestrale. Five segments (A4, C3, C15, D5, and E4) were differentially expressed at different developmental stages of the parasitized P. xylostella, and two segments (C15 and D14) were highly expressed in the ovaries of D. fenestrale. Comparative analysis between DfIV and DsIV revealed that the genomes differed in the number of segments, composition of sequences, and internal sequence homologies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In case of intractable exit site and/or tunnel infections, peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter removal and re-insertion are recommended. Previous studies have reported the possibility of catheter salvage before removal, but they were either case-series or had a small sample size. METHODS: We identified all incident patients with PD who underwent revision at a tertiary medical center. In intractable exit site and/or tunnel infections, we tried catheter revision using a method with cuff shaving, using an original catheter, and creating a new tunnel. Revision success was defined as complete remission over more than 1 month after revision. We evaluated the infection-free and catheter survival rates. RESULTS: In total, 52 patients with PD underwent revision. The median age at the time of revision in the patients undergoing PD was 51 (21) years. There were 43 (82.7%) cases of revision success. Infection-free survival rates at 6 and 12 months were 57.0% and 35.1%, respectively. Catheter survival rates at 12 and 36 months were 72.5% and 56.2%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that catheter revision can be a useful bridging method for original catheter salvage before catheter removal in intractable exit site and/or tunnel infections.

RESUMO

A rapid, accurate, and on-site molecular diagnostic protocol for red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta, Si) was developed using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays. Si11977 (GenBank accession no. MK986826) was confirmed to be a Si-specific gene. Four-primer Si11977-LAMP (4pSi-LAMP) and six-primer Si11977-LAMP (6pSi-LAMP) assays specifically detected Si. The reaction time of 6pSi-LAMP assays was reduced by 5 min compared with 4pSi-LAMP assays. The optimal amount of polymerase and the detection limit for the 6pSi-LAMP assays were 0.1 unit/µL and 5 fg/µL, respectively. In addition, a method for extracting genomic DNA from ant tissues within 2 to 3 min and a protocol for performing on-site LAMP assays using a car heating mug and a LAMP observation box were described. The on-site Si detection protocol used in this study was possible within 30 min from DNA extraction to species identification.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Further studies are needed to identify whether muscle mass, muscle strength, or sarcopenia is the best indicator of survival in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). We aimed to compare the association of sarcopenia and its components with survival in patients undergoing PD. METHODS: We identified all patients with PD (n = 199). We routinely recommended handgrip strength (HGS) and lean mass measurements using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in all patients with PD. Sarcopenia was defined using cutoff values from the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. We evaluated the patient and technique survival rates. RESULTS: The number of patients with low HGS was 95 (47.7%). The median follow-up interval was 17 months (interquartile range, 13-21 months). Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed that patients with low HGS or sarcopenia had poorer patient and technique survival compared with patients with normal HGS or without sarcopenia. Cox regression analysis showed that patients with low HGS had greater hazard ratios for patient death and technique failure compared with those with normal HGS. However, patients with low muscle mass were not significantly higher hazard ratios for patient death or technique failure compared with those with normal muscle mass. Patients with sarcopenia had significantly greater hazard ratios for patient death or technique failure than those without sarcopenia only in univariate analysis. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that HGS may be superior to muscle mass or sarcopenia for predicting patient or technique survival in patients undergoing PD.

RESUMO

Background: Few studies have investigated the association between muscle mass and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). We aimed to investigate the association between muscle mass or strength and BMD in patients undergoing PD. Methods: The data of all prevalent PD cases at a tertiary medical center between September 2017 and November 2020 were collected. Among all patients, 199 patients undergoing PD were finally analyzed. Baseline measurements including handgrip strength (HGS), appendicular lean mass (ALM) index, and BMD were obtained during a peritoneal membrane equilibration test. Patients with a T-score of ≤ -2.5 were categorized into the low BMD group. Results: The number of male patients was 113 (56.8%). Significant differences were observed in various indices, such as BMD, body composition parameters, and laboratory findings, between male and female patients. There was a stronger association between BMD and ALM index than between BMD and HGS in male patients (r = 0.432 and P < 0.001). The association between BMD and HGS was more definitive in female patients than in male patients (r = 0.357 and P = 0.001). Univariate and mutivariate linear regression and AUROC analyses showed similar trends those obtained in correlation analyses. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that BMD is associated with the ALM index in male patients and with HGS in female patients undergoing PD.

RESUMO

Background: Recent studies have reported that steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworms, also known as HongJam, have various health-promoting effects. Objective: The goal of this study was to elucidate changes in the various health-promoting effects of HongJam, after its digestion with a food-grade protease. Materials and Methods: We examined whether healthspan-promotion and rotenone-induced loss of motor-control prevention effects were enhanced in Drosophila fed with food-grade alkaline protease-digested HongJam compared to those fed with non-digested HongJam. The differences in mitochondrial functions, chemical susceptibilities, and activations of signal transduction pathways between Drosophila supplemented with various feed were examined to elucidate the molecular and biochemical basis of healthspan-promotion and locomotor-improvement effects of protease-digested HongJam. Results: We first found that the healthspan-promotion effect of HongJam digested with a food-grade protease was different depending on the silkworm variety used for its production. Digestion with food-grade protease into White-Jade HongJam (WJ) as prepared from the White-Jade silkworm variety that spins white cocoons did not enhance its functionality. However, compared to Golden-Silk HongJam (GS), a food-grade protease-digested Golden-Silk HongJam (GSD) produced from the Golden-Silk silkworm variety that spins yellow cocoons, it further promoted the healthspan in a Drosophila model. By conducting a series of studies to reveal the molecular and biochemical basis for healthspan-promoting effects, we found that GS and GSD similarly enhanced mitochondrial activity, but GSD activated autophagy signaling more than GS. In addition, GSD feed (GSDf)-, GSD supernatant feed (GSDsupf)-, and GSD precipitate feed (GSDprecf)-reared Drosophila were also found to have increased resistance to an autophagy inhibitor compared to that of normal feed- or GS feed-reared Drosophila. Furthermore, we found that the rotenone-induced loss of motor control prevention effect was superior for GSDsup compared to GS, GSD, or GSDprec. This result may have occurred because GSDsup has more phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities than other samples. Conclusion: GSDsup contained more digested small peptides and free phytochemicals than other samples due to the digestion of proteins with a food-grade protease. Thus, GSDsup leads to further healthspan-promoting and locomotor-improvement effects than GS, GSD, or GSDprec.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neck circumference (NC), per se, includes muscle mass beyond simple fat mass and mainly subcutaneous fat. We aimed to investigate the clinical usefulness of NC for predicting muscle mass, strength, or sarcopenia in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients undergoing PD (n = 199). NC, body compositions, and handgrip strength (HGS) were measured in all patients. Appendicular lean mass (ALM) was evaluated using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the time of dry abdomen. Sarcopenia and metabolic syndrome were diagnosed using the definitions from previous guidelines. We analyzed the data divided by sex. RESULTS: In male patients, the discrimination performance of BMI or NC for sarcopenia was similar, but BMI was more closely associated with the prediction of metabolic syndrome than NC. Linear and logistic regression analyses showed that, in males, BMI was associated with the ALM index and metabolic syndrome, but NC was associated with sarcopenia and HGS. In addition, the addition of NC in the multivariate model was associated with better predictability of sarcopenia in men. In female patients, the discrimination performance of BMI or NC for sarcopenia or metabolic syndrome was similar. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that NC is associated with HGS and sarcopenia in male patients undergoing PD. NC may be a useful option for screening for sarcopenia beyond simple BMI and may be helpful in identifying whether further evaluation for a diagnosis of sarcopenia is required.

RESUMO

A series of thermotropic liquid crystal copolyesters (Co-TLCPs) was prepared by melt polymerization using 2,5-diethoxyterephthalic acid (DTA), 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN), and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) monomers, where the HBA content was varied (0-5 mol). At 3 mol HBA, the Co-TLCPs formed nematic mesophases, while below this concentration, the liquid crystalline phase did not appear. The Co-TLCP sample with 3 mol HBA was subjected to melt spinning and heat-treated under various conditions (temperature and time) to investigate their effect on the thermo-mechanical properties and degree of crystallinity. The objective was to determine the critical heat treatment condition that can maximize the properties of the spun Co-TLCP fibers. The microstructure of the heat-treated fiber was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, and the optimal annealing conditions were confirmed based on the morphology of the fiber, which exhibited a skin-core structure owing to the varying heat and pressure conditions applied during spinning.

RESUMO

Purpose: As the number of patients with chronic kidney disease increases, nephrologist activities are gradually expanding. This study evaluated the safety and success of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) performed by nephrologists. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of a medical center. All patients underwent a PICC procedure by two nephrologists. The reasons for catheter removal were classified as accidental removal; treatment termination; catheter occlusion; vessel thrombosis; catheter-related infection, or patient death. Overall catheter complications were defined as catheter occlusion, vessel thrombosis, or catheter-related infection. Results: A total of 335 catheterizations among 286 patients were performed. Overall, catheter removal was required during follow-up in 251 of 335 cases. The catheter was removed in 48 out of 251 (19.1%) cases with catheter-related complications. In univariate and multivariate analyses, diabetes mellitus was associated with catheter-related infection. The catheter survival rates were 85.3% at 1 month. In univariate and multivariate analyses, diabetes mellitus and fluoroscopy-guided insertion were associated with favorable catheter survival. Conclusion: The results of our study showed high success and low complication rates for PICC insertion by nephrologists. These findings indicate that interventional nephrologists already skilled in other procedures can expand their field of activity and profit.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tunnel exposure, a non-infectious complication, is a rare finding in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, which has been described in some case reports. Our study aimed to present catheter salvage therapy using a revision procedure of tunnel exposure by nephrologists. METHODS: Our retrospective study was conducted between July 1998 and October 2021. We identified all PD patients with tunnel exposure from a database of a tertiary medical center. Tunnel exposure was diagnosed following gross inspection by clinicians during outpatient consultations. We attempted revision with partial external cuff shaving and creating a new tunnel without catheter change. RESULTS: Fourteen cases in 12 patients were diagnosed as tunnel exposure. The median age at presentation of tunnel exposure was 51 years. Eleven patients underwent revision, and the PD catheter was removed in one patient. The patients who underwent revision were followed up for 6 months. The catheter salvage rate was 72.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that catheter revision performed by nephrologists could be a valuable alternative for original catheter salvage before considering catheter removal in tunnel exposure management.

RESUMO

A 57-year-old male patient visited our center owing to abnormal tunneled cuffed hemodialysis catheter (TC-HDC). He had been undergoing hemodialysis for 44 months. Hemodialysis was performed using a TC-HDC, which became dilatated between the hub and exit site 19 months after the initiation of hemodialysis. The first TC-HDC was exchanged using over the guidewire method. The second TC-HDC was maintained for 25 months after catheter exchange. However, the second TC-HDC was repeatedly dilatated 25 months later from the first catheter exchange. We re-exchanged the dilatated TC-HDC to the new TC-HDC using over the guidewire method. Our case presented general dilatation of both lumens without leakage. The portion of catheter dilatation was limited between the hub and exit site. The embedded segment of the catheter was preserved owing to encasement of the adjacent tissue. Our case showed that clinicians should inspect both exposed and embedded segments to prevent further catheter injury and exchange the catheter before the development of complications.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Neurilemmoma is a benign tumor derived from the Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. The highest incidence of neurilemmoma occurs in the head and neck region; however, the nose and paranasal sinuses are rarely involved. Less than 4% of these tumors involve the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. To date, only six cases of nasal vestibule neurilemmoma have been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: Two patients (a 32-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman) visited our clinic with complaint of a lump in the left nasal vestibule. DIAGNOSIS: Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining confirmed a neurilemmoma. INTERVENTIONS: The mass was completely removed via an intranasal approach. OUTCOMES AND LESSONS: Neurilemmoma is easy to overlook because it occurs rarely in the nasal vestibule, but neurilemmoma needs to be considered as a differential diagnosis.

RESUMO

The fall armyworm [FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith)], a moth native to America, has spread throughout the world since it was first discovered in Africa in 2016. The FAW is a polyphagous migratory pest that can travel over long distances using seasonal winds or typhoons because of its excellent flying ability, causing serious damage to many crops. For effective FAW control, accurate species identification is essential at the beginning of the invasion. In this study, the FAW-specific gene Sf00067 was discovered by performing bioinformatics to develop a fast and accurate tool for the species-specific diagnosis of this pest. An Sf00067 loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed, and optimal conditions were established. The Sf00067 6 primer LAMP (Sf6p-LAMP) assay established in this study was able to diagnose various genotype-based strains of FAW captured in Korea and FAWs collected from Benin, Africa. Our FAW diagnostic protocol can be completed within 30 min, from the process of extracting genomic DNA from an egg or a 1st instar larva to species determination.

RESUMO

We developed a brain thick-section-clearing (BTS-C) procedure to observe coronal sections of the entire mouse brain with conventional epifluorescence microscopy (EFM). After clearing with the BTS procedure, the white light transmittance of the 1-mm-thick mouse brain sections was more than 96%. The distribution patterns of amyloid plaques or α-synuclein in 1-mm-thick brain sections of five different mouse strains cleared with this procedure were easily observed by EFM. In addition, the detailed distribution of antigens at higher magnifications was revealed by observing the same slides with a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). In conclusion, we have shown that the BTS protocol can replace laborious and time-consuming semi-thin-sectioning procedures, and the cleared 1-mm-thick sections can be examined by EFM and CLSM to elucidate the distribution patterns of antigens.
