RESUMO

Paraxial diffraction modeling based on the Fourier transform has seen widespread implementation for simulating the response of a diffraction-limited optical system. For systems where the paraxial assumption is not sufficient, a class of algorithms has been developed that employs hybrid propagation physics to compute the propagation of an elementary beamlet along geometric ray paths. These "beamlet decomposition" algorithms include the well-known Gaussian beamlet decomposition (GBD) algorithm, of which several variants have been created. To increase the computational efficiency of the GBD algorithm, we derive an alternative expression of the technique that utilizes the analytical propagation of beamlets to tilted planes. We then use this accelerated algorithm to conduct a parameter-space search to find the optimal combination of free parameters in GBD to construct the analytical Airy function. The experiment is conducted on a consumer-grade CPU, and a high-performance GPU, where the new algorithm is 34 times faster than the previously published algorithm on CPUs, and 67,513 times faster on GPUs.

Deterministic computer-controlled optical finishing is an essential approach for achieving high-quality optical surfaces. Its determinism and convergence rely heavily on precise and smooth motion control to guide the machine tool over an optical surface to correct residual errors. One widely supported and smooth motion control model is position-velocity-time (PVT), which employs piecewise cubic polynomials to describe positions. Our prior research introduced a PVT-based velocity scheduling method, demonstrating sub-nanometer level convergence in ion beam figuring (IBF) processes. However, three challenges remained. Firstly, this method relies on quadratic programming, resulting in computational intensiveness for dense tool paths. Secondly, the dynamics constraints and velocity and acceleration continuities are not comprehensively considered, limiting the full potential of PVT-based control. Thirdly, no compensation mechanism existed when dynamics constraints are exceeded. In this study, in response to these challenges, we proposed the Enhanced PVT (E-PVT) method, reducing the time complexity from O(n3) to O(n) while fully addressing dynamics constraints and continuities. A novel compensation method utilizing particle swarm optimization was proposed to address situations where dynamics constraints might be exceeded while maintaining the overall processing efficiency. Validation through simulation and experimentation confirmed the improved performance of E-PVT.

Since the run off of microplastic and plastic additives into the aquatic environment through the disposal of plastic products, we investigated the adverse effects of co-exposure to microplastics and plastic additives on zebrafish embryonic development. To elucidate the combined effects between microplastic mixtures composed of microplastics and plastic additives in zebrafish embryonic development, polystyrene (PS), bisphenol S (BPS), and mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) were chosen as a target contaminant. Based on non-toxic concentration of each contaminant in zebrafish embryos, microplastic mixtures which is consisted of binary and ternary mixed forms were prepared. A strong phenotypic toxicity to zebrafish embryos was observed in the mixtures composed with non-toxic concentration of each contaminant. In particular, the mixture combination with ≤ EC10 values for BPS and MEHP showed a with a strong synergistic effect. Based on phenotypic toxicity to zebrafish embryos, change of transcription levels for target genes related to cell damage and thyroid hormone synthesis were analyzed in the ternary mixtures with low concentrations that were observed non-toxicity. Compared with the control group, cell damage genes linked to the oxidative stress response and thyroid hormone transcription factors were remarkably down-regulated in the ternary mixture-exposed groups, whereas the transcriptional levels of cyp1a1 and p53 were significantly up-regulated in the ternary mixture-exposed groups (P < 0.05). These results demonstrate that even at low concentrations, exposure to microplastic mixtures can cause embryonic damage and developmental malformations in zebrafish, depending on the mixed concentration-combination. Consequently, our findings will provide data to examine the action mode of zebrafish developmental toxicity caused by microplastic mixtures exposure composed with microplastics and plastic additives.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a heterogeneous group of more than 200 diffuse parenchymal lung diseases with various clinical courses. Disease progression is one of the most important prognostic factors, and, the definition of progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) has recently been established. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence, risk factors, and prognosis of PPF among patients with non-idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in real-world practice. A total of 215 patients were retrospectively analyzed between January 2010 and June 2023 at the Haeundae Paik Hospital in the Republic of Korea. According to the criteria proposed in 2022 by Raghu et al, PPF defined as a condition that satisfies 2 or more of the following in the past year: worsening of respiratory symptoms, physiological evidence of disease progression, and radiological evidence of disease progression. The median age of the subjects was 67 years and 63.7% were female. A total of 40% was diagnosed with PPF and connective tissue disease-associated ILD (52.3%) was the most common type, followed by nonspecific interstitial pneumonitis (NSIP) (25.6%) and cryptogenic organizing pneumonitis (16.3%). In multivariate logistic regression for predicting PPF, both the use of steroids and immunosuppressants (OR: 2.57, 95% CI: 1.41-4.67, P = .002) and home oxygen use (OR: 25.17, 95% CI: 3.21-197.24, P = .002) were independent risk factors. During the follow-up period, the mortality rate was significantly higher in the PPF group than in the non-PPF group (24.4% vs 2.3%, P < .001). In the survival analysis using the Cox proportional hazard regression model, disease progression, older age and lower forced vital capacity (FVC) were independent risk factors for mortality. Our study demonstrated that the prevalence of PPF was 40%. Concomitant therapy of steroids with an immunosuppressants and home oxygen use are risk factors for PPF. PPF itself was significantly associated with high mortality rates. Risk factors for mortality were disease progression, older age, and lower FVC.

Serum lipid levels have been associated with an increased risk of suicidal behaviors. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between serum lipid levels and death by suicide among suicide attempters according to sex. Suicide attempters visiting emergency departments between 2007 and 2011 were followed up until the date of all-cause death or December 31, 2012. Sex-stratified Cox proportional hazards regression and competing risk models were constructed to obtain the hazard ratios (HR) of serum lipid measures and suicide. For each significant lipid variable in the final models, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and cumulative incidence function (CIF) were employed to compare the time to suicide between the high- and low-lipid groups based on the best cutoff point from the receiver operating characteristic curve. In 408 female attempters (65.8 %), the HR in the Cox regression model and subdistribution HR in the competing risk model for increased total cholesterol (TC) were 0.968 and 0.970, respectively. In the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and CIF, increased death by suicide was demonstrated in the low-TC group (< 165 mg/dL). Lower serum TC levels among female suicide attempters may predict suicide. More careful monitoring is warranted in women with lower TC levels who recently attempted suicide.

In interferometry measurement, the retrace error often limits its high-precision metrology applications. Retrace error calibration with tilted flats can give a relation between the retrace error and the introduced tilt angles, but there is still an ambiguity between the introduced tilt angles and the tilt terms in the created retrace error. We propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, two-step calibration method to resolve this tilt ambiguity. It involves additional measurements of spherical mirror(s) with known curvature(s). The experiment shows that the curvature deviation due to the tilt ambiguity can be significantly reduced after applying the proposed method.

Metasurfaces, optics made from subwavelength-scale nanostructures, have been limited to millimeter-sizes by the scaling challenge of producing vast numbers of precisely engineered elements over a large area. In this study, we demonstrate an all-glass 100 mm diameter metasurface lens (metalens) comprising 18.7 billion nanostructures that operates in the visible spectrum with a fast f-number (f/1.5, NA = 0.32) using deep-ultraviolet (DUV) projection lithography. Our work overcomes the exposure area constraints of lithography tools and demonstrates that large metasurfaces are commercially feasible. Additionally, we investigate the impact of various fabrication errors on the imaging quality of the metalens, several of which are specific to such large area metasurfaces. We demonstrate direct astronomical imaging of the Sun, the Moon, and emission nebulae at visible wavelengths and validate the robustness of such metasurfaces under extreme environmental thermal swings for space applications.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is a common extra-articular clinical manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that has negative impacts on morbidity and mortality. In addition, there has been no proven treatment for RA-ILD to date. Thus, we planned a meta-analysis of a literature search to confirm the clinical effects of antifibrotic agents in RA-ILD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted the literature search in Ovid MEDLIVE® databases, Cochrane Library databases, EMBASE, and KoreaMed and identified references elucidating the role of nintedanib or pirfenidone in adult patients with RA-ILD. Among the identified studies, those with comparative interventions, complete results of clinical trials, and available full text were included in the analysis. The primary outcome was the effect of the antifibrotic agent on disease progression in RA-ILD patients assessed with a mean difference in the change of forced vital capacity (FVC) and the proportion of patients with an increase in percent predicted FVC of 10% or more over 52 weeks. Analysis for heterogeneity was assessed through I2 statistics. Meta-analysis with a fixed effect model was performed on changes in FVC. RESULTS: A total of 153 articles were identified through database searches, of which 28 were excluded because of duplication. After additional screening, 109 studies were selected with full text and two articles qualified for analysis according to the set inclusion and exclusion criteria. As a result, two randomized controlled studies were selected, comparing nintedanib and pirfenidone to placebo, respectively. The meta-analysis revealed that antifibrotic agents showed a significant reduction in FVC decline compared to placebo in patients with RA-ILD (mean difference, 88.30; 95% CI, 37.10-139.50). Additionally, there were significantly fewer patients experienced an increase in percent predicted FVC of 10% or more in the antifibrotic agent group compared to the placebo group (Odds ratio 0.42; 95% CI 0.19-0.95, p = 0.04). There was no significant heterogeneity between the two included studies (χ2 = 0.35, p = 0.0007, I2 = 0%). CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis suggests that nintedanib and pirfenidone may have clinical utility in reducing disease progression in patients with RA-ILD. Further research is needed to confirm the clinical benefits of antifibrotic agents in RA-ILD.

Olivine-type LiFePO4 (LFP) is considered a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its abundance, high specific capacity, and cycling performance. However, its poor electronic and ionic transportation properties degrade the high rate capability, which limits its use in high-energy-density LIBs for applications such as electric vehicles. Therefore, in this study, we propose a modification of the anion configuration through nitrogen substitution using ion implantation to improve electronic and ionic transport during lithiation/delithiation. We found that nitrogen substitution at the oxygen sites effectively improved the electrochemical properties through surface modification and charge-transfer kinetics. In particular, the increased amount of nitrogen substitution at the surface regions resulted in reduced ionic and electronic resistances. These modified characteristics led to a remarkable rate capability with a high capacity (128.2 mA h g-1 at 10C). We expect that these modified anion effects on the electrochemical properties can be effective in the design of cathode materials for LIBs.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive fibrotic lung disease with a poor prognosis. Pirfenidone is approved and widely used for the treatment of IPF and reduces lung function decline. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different doses of pirfenidone for the prevention of disease progression in patients with IPF. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational, single-center cohort study conducted in Haeundae Paik Hospital, Republic of Korea, from April 2021 to March 2023. IPF patients were assigned to three groups according to the dose of pirfenidone (600 mg, 1200 mg, 1800 mg). Disease progression was defined as an absolute decline to ≥5% of forced vital capacity (FVC) (% predicted value) or an absolute decline to ≥10% of diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLco) (% predicted value) over 12 months. The primary endpoint was to evaluate the clinical effects of pirfenidone of each dosage on disease progression in IPF patients by comparing the FVC (% predicted value) and DLco (% predicted value) values over 12 months. The secondary endpoint was to evaluate the prognostic value of Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) in the disease progression in IPF patients using the baseline KL-6 value and the change in KL-6 values between the baseline and 12 months. RESULTS: A total of 44 patients were enrolled, of whom 39 completed the study, with 13 patients assigned to each of the three groups. The median age was 71.7 years, and 79.5% of patients were men. The baseline characteristics were similar across groups, except the 600 mg group was older (75.9 vs. 69.2 vs. 68.2 years, p = 0.016). The overall median change in FVC and DLco over 12 months was -2.7% (IQR: -9.1%, -1.2%) and -3.8% (IQR: -13.6%, -3.7%), respectively. There was no difference in the decline in FVC (change in FVC, % predicted value: -3.23 vs. -4.08 vs. -1.54, p = 0.621) and DLco (change in DLco, % predicted value: 0.00 vs. -3.62 vs. -3.15, p = 0.437) among the three groups. Fourteen patients (35.9%) suffered disease progression. The rate of disease progression did not differ according to the dose of pirfenidone (38.5 vs. 38.5 vs. 30.8%, p = 1.000). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, KL-6 was not a statistically significant predictor of disease progression. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, regardless of dose, consistent pirfenidone use for 12 months resulted in similar efficacy for the prevention of disease progression in patients with IPF. Large-scale, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials are needed.

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) exists in a variety of polymorphs and crystallographic structures. The electrochemical performance of Li storage can vary depending on the polymorph and the morphology. In this study, we present a new approach to fabricate polymorph- and aspect-ratio-controlled α-MnO2 nanorods. First, δ-MnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using a solution plasma process assisted by three types of sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) as reducing promoters; this revealed different morphologies depending on the nucleation rate and reaction time from the molecular structure of the sugars. Based on the morphology of δ-MnO2, the polymorphic-transformed three types of α-MnO2 nanorods showed different aspect ratios (c/a), which highly affected the transport of Li ions. Among them, a relatively small aspect ratio (c/a = 5.1) and wide width of α-MnO2-S nanorods (sucrose-assisted) induced facile Li-ion transport in the interior of the particles through an increased Li-ion pathway. Consequently, α-MnO2-S exhibited superior battery performance with a high-rate capability of 673 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and it delivered a high reversible capacity of 1169 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles. Our findings demonstrated that polymorphs and crystallographic properties are crucial factors in the electrode design of high-performance Li-ion batteries.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are key for renewable energy systems, including metal-air batteries, fuel cells, and water electrolysis. In particular, metal-air batteries require multiple catalysts for the ORR and OER. Thus, bifunctional catalysts are required to improve efficiency and simplify catalytic systems. Hence, we developed defect- and oxygen-rich nanocarbons as bifunctional catalysts through a one-pot formation by applying plasma discharge in mixed solvents of benzene with crown ether. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed that oxygen was embedded and functionalized into the carbon matrix and abundant defects were formed, which highly affected the catalytic activity of the ORR and OER. The obtained CNP-CEs revealed a tuned electron transfer trend to a rapid four-electron pathway (n = 3.5) for the ORR, as well as a decreased onset potential and Tafel slope for the OER. Consequently, CNP-CE-50 exhibited an improved bifunctional catalytic characteristic with the narrowest potential gap between the ORR and OER. We believe that our findings suggest new models for carbon-based bifunctional catalysts and provide a prospective approach for a synthetic procedure of carbon nanomaterials.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an interstitial lung disease with chronic, progressive lung fibrosis with a poor prognosis. Recent studies have reported a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in IPF patients and an association with poor prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical effects on mortality of OSA in patients with IPF. METHODS: Clinical data were retrospectively analyzed in 167 patients with IPF at Haeundae-Paik Hospital, Republic of Korea. A type 4 portable device was used to monitor OSA, and an apnea-hypopnea index of 5 events per sleep hour and above was diagnosed as OSA. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period and age were 26.9 months and 71.4 years, respectively, with male predominance. OSA was confirmed in 108 patients (64.7%). Mild OSA was the most common (62.1%). Independent risk factors for OSA in the multivariate logistic regression analysis were age (odds ratio [OR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.13, p = 0.007), body weight (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02-1.09, p = 0.002), and risk based on the Berlin questionnaire (OR 2.76, 95% CI 1.12-6.80, p = 0.028). Shorter six-minute walk distance (6MWD) (hazard ratio [HR] 1.00, 95% CI: 1.00-1.00, p < 0.001), acute exacerbation (AE) (HR 13.83, 95% CI: 5.71-33.47, p < 0.001), and higher percentage of cumulative time with oxygen saturation below 90% in total sleep time (HR 1.08, 95% CI: 1.02-1.14, p = 0.007) were risk factors for mortality in IPF patients in the Cox regression analysis. CONCLUSION: Approximately two-thirds of the IPF patients had OSA. Older age, higher body weight, and high risk based on the Berlin questionnaire were independent risk factors for OSA in IPF patients. Shorter 6MWD, experience of AE, and night hypoxemia during sleep were associated with a higher risk of mortality in patients with IPF.

RESUMO

We introduce a method of geometric screen modification to remove ghost reflections commonly observed in deflectometry optical testing. The proposed method modifies the optical layout and illumination source area to bypass the generation of reflected rays from the undesired surface. The layout flexibility of deflectometry allows us to design specific system layouts that avoid the generation of interrupting secondary rays. The proposed method is supported by optical raytrace simulations, and experimental results are demonstrated with convex and concave lens case studies. Finally, the limitations of the digital masking method are discussed.

Bisphenol S (BPS), an organic compound and bisphenol analog, is commonly used as a substitute for bisphenol A. BPS is widely used in epoxy glues, can coatings, and thermal receipt papers; however, its risks have not been fully determined and the probability of its toxicity has been continuously suggested. In this study, we conducted BPS toxicity tests on aquatic plants (acute), cladocerans (acute and chronic), and fish (chronic) to determine its adverse effects, and calculated the toxicity values. Additionally, we conducted an ecological risk assessment of BPS in freshwater ecosystems with toxicity data from previous studies using the species sensitivity distribution method and BPS exposure data from 14 rivers in four countries in Asia (China, Japan, India, and South Korea). The chronic-based risk quotient (RQ) values of BPS in one river in China and two rivers in India were > 1, indicating a high ecological risk of BPS to aquatic organisms. The other four rivers in China showed medium ecological risk (0.1 < RQ < 1) and those in Japan and South Korea showed negligible chronic risk (RQ < 0.1) to aquatic organisms. We also suggest sensitive indicators in the model organism Danio rerio and highlighted the importance of the development of new method of ecological risk assessment. This study could provide new information that will assist in managing BPS and bisphenol analogs in freshwater ecosystems.

The manufacturing and characterization of freeform optical surfaces are influenced by their high sensitivity to misalignments. In this work, the computational sampling moiré technique combined with phase extraction is developed for the precise alignment of freeform optics during fabrication and in metrology applications. This novel, to the best of our knowledge, technique achieves near-interferometry-level precision in a simple and compact configuration. This robust technology can be applied to industrial manufacturing platforms (such as diamond turning machines, lithography, and other micro-nano-machining techniques) as well as their metrology equipment. In a demonstration of computational data processing and precision alignment using this method, iterative manufacturing of freeform optical surfaces with a final-form accuracy of about 180 nm was accomplished.

Obese psoriatic patients experience higher disease severity and exhibit poorer treatment responses and clinical outcomes. It has been proposed that proinflammatory cytokines produced by adipose tissue exacerbate psoriasis; however, the role of obesity in psoriasis remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the role of obesity in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, focusing on immunological changes. To induce obesity, mice were fed a high-fat diet for 20 weeks. We then applied imiquimod to the skin on a mouse's back for seven consecutive days to induce psoriasis and scored lesion severity every day for seven days. Cytokine levels in serum and the Th17 cell population in the spleen and draining lymph nodes were studied to identify immunological differences. The clinical severity was more remarkable, and histologically the epidermis was also significantly thicker in the obese group. Increased levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were observed in serum after psoriasis. They were elevated to a greater degree, with greater expansion of the functional Th17 cell population in the obese group. It is concluded that obesity could exacerbate psoriasis through mechanisms that involve elevated proinflammatory cytokine secretion and an expanded Th17 cell population.

Background: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on functional performance, exercise-related oxygen saturation, and health-related quality of life among patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Methods: A total of 25 patients with IPF (13 in the PR group and 12 in the non-PR group) were enrolled between August 2019 and October 2021 at Haeundae-Paik Hospital in the Republic of Korea. A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), six-minute walk test (6MWT), pulmonary function test (PFT), Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), muscle strength test, and bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed in each group at baseline and after eight weeks of PR. Results: The mean age was 68 years of age and most subjects were male. Baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. The distance during 6MWT after PR was significantly improved in the PR group (inter-group p-value = 0.002). VO2max and VE/VCO2 slopes showed a significant difference after eight weeks only in the PR group, but the rate of change did not differ significantly from the non-PR group. Total skeletal muscle mass, PFT variables, and SGRQ scores did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusions: PR improved exercise capacity, as measured using CPET and 6 MWT. Further studies in larger samples are needed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of PR in IPF patients.

Grazing-incidence reflective optics are commonly used in synchrotron radiation and free-electron laser facilities to transport and focus the emitted X-ray beams. To preserve the imaging capability at the diffraction limit, the fabrication of these optics requires precise control of both the residual height and slope errors. However, all the surface figuring methods are height based, lacking the explicit control of surface slopes. Although our preliminary work demonstrated a one-dimensional (1D) slope-based figuring model, its 2D extension is not straightforward. In this study, a novel 2D slope-based figuring method is proposed, which employs an alternating objective optimization on the slopes in the x- and y-directions directly. An analytical simulation revealed that the slope-based method achieved smaller residual slope errors than the height-based method, while the height-based method achieved smaller residual height errors than the slope-based method. Therefore, a hybrid height and slope figuring method was proposed to further enable explicit control of both the height and slopes according to the final mirror specifications. An experiment to finish an elliptical-cylindrical mirror using the hybrid method with ion beam figuring was then performed. Both the residual height and slope errors converged below the specified threshold values, which verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed ideas.
