RESUMO

Rotator cuff tendon tears are a leading cause of shoulder pain. They are challenging to treat, and tendon-bone healing has a high failure rate despite successful surgery. Tendons connect the muscles and bones, which make them important for the body's overall mobility and stability. Metabolic diseases, including diabetes or high blood pressure, can affect the healing process after repair of a damaged tendon. With a global incidence of 9.3%, diabetes is considered as a significant risk factor for rotator cuff tendon healing because it causes structural, inflammatory, and vascular changes in the tendon. However, the mechanisms of how diabetes affects tendon healing remain unknown. Several factors have been suggested, including glycation product accumulation, adipokine dysregulation, increased levels of reactive oxygen species, apoptosis, inflammatory cytokines, imbalanced matrix-metalloproteinase-to-tissue-inhibitor ratio, and impaired angiogenesis and differentiation of the tendon sheath. Despite the effects of diabetes on tendon function and healing, few treatments are available to improve recovery in these patients. This review summarizes the current literature on the pathophysiological changes of the tendon in diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Preclinical and clinical evidence regarding the association between diabetes and tendon healing is presented. Moreover, current approaches to improve tendon healing in patients with diabetes are reviewed.

Aspergillus subgenus Nidulantes with nine section forms the second largest subgenus of the fungi that comes under the genus Aspergillus. Species in this group of fungi are important as they are reported to play several important roles in the environment including influencing air quality in confined spaces, food spoilage, production of mycotoxins as well as in human pathogenicity. In the present study, 53 strains of Aspergillus subgenus Nidulantes (section: Nidulantes & Usti) isolated from Korea and preserved at the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC) were subjected to re-identification by using a combined dataset of partial ß-tubulin (BenA), Calmodulin (CaM) gene sequences as well as their morphological data. We confirmed 14 species from 53 isolates in Korea. Of them, eleven species were reported in Korea previously (A. amoenus, A. baeticus, A. calidoustus, A. creber, A. insuetus, A. jensenii, A. nidulans, A. protuberus, A. sydowii, A. tabacinus and A. unguis), and three species (A. griseoaurantiacus, A. puulaauensis and A. sublatus) were previously unreported from Korea. We detailed the characteristic features of these three species, that remain unexplored in Korea.

BACKGROUND: The importance of the human microbiome in the analysis of various diseases is emerging. The two main methods used to profile the human microbiome are 16S rRNA gene sequencing (16S sequencing) and whole-genome shotgun sequencing (WGS). Owing to the full coverage of the genome in sequencing, WGS has multiple advantages over 16S sequencing, including higher taxonomic profiling resolution at the species-level and functional profiling analysis. However, 16S sequencing remains widely used because of its relatively low cost. Although WGS is the standard method for obtaining accurate species-level data, we found that 16S sequencing data contained rich information to predict high-resolution species-level abundances with reasonable accuracy. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we proposed MicroPredict, a method for accurately predicting WGS-comparable species-level abundance data using 16S taxonomic profile data. METHODS: We employed a mixed model using two key strategies: (1) modeling both sample- and species-specific information for predicting WGS abundances, and (2) accounting for the possible correlations among different species. RESULTS: We found that MicroPredict outperformed the other machine learning methods. CONCLUSION: We expect that our approach will help researchers accurately approximate the species-level abundances of microbiome profiles in datasets for which only cost-effective 16S sequencing has been applied.

Photonic nanomaterials, characterized by their remarkable photonic tunability, empower a diverse range of applications, including cutting-edge advances in cancer nanomedicine. Recently, ferroptosis has emerged as a promising alternative strategy for effectively killing cancer cells with minimizing therapeutic resistance. Novel design of photonic nanomaterials that can integrate photoresponsive-ferroptosis inducers, -diagnostic imaging, and -synergistic components provide significant benefits to effectively trigger local ferroptosis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in photonic nanomaterials for image-guided ferroptosis cancer nanomedicine, offering insights into their strengths, constraints, and their potential as a future paradigm in cancer treatment.

The utilization of electromagnetic waves is rapidly advancing into the millimeter-wave frequency range, posing increasingly severe challenges in terms of electromagnetic pollution prevention and radar stealth. However, existing millimeter-wave absorbers are still inadequate in addressing these issues due to their monotonous magnetic resonance pattern. In this work, rare-earth La3+ and non-magnetic Zr4+ ions are simultaneously incorporated into M-type barium ferrite (BaM) to intentionally manipulate the multi-magnetic resonance behavior. By leveraging the contrary impact of La3+ and Zr4+ ions on magnetocrystalline anisotropy field, the restrictive relationship between intensity and frequency of the multi-magnetic resonance is successfully eliminated. The magnetic resonance peak-differentiating and imitating results confirm that significant multi-magnetic resonance phenomenon emerges around 35 GHz due to the reinforced exchange coupling effect between Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Additionally, Mössbauer spectra analysis, first-principle calculations, and least square fitting collectively identify that additional La3+ doping leads to a profound rearrangement of Zr4+ occupation and thus makes the portion of polarization/conduction loss increase gradually. As a consequence, the La3+-Zr4+ co-doped BaM achieves an ultra-broad bandwidth of 12.5 + GHz covering from 27.5 to 40 + GHz, which holds remarkable potential for millimeter-wave absorbers around the atmospheric window of 35 GHz.

Colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a promising but challenging procedure. It is not widely performed due to its technical difficulty. We aimed to find the predictive factors associated with technical difficulty in colorectal ESD before the procedure. Clinical data from patients who underwent ESD for colorectal tumors in 5 hospitals in Honam province of South Korea between 2015 and 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Technically difficult colorectal ESD procedure was defined in 3 points. Long procedure time (longer than 60 minutes), occurrence of perforation, and failure of en bloc resection. Factors associated with technically difficult ESD were included as main outcome measure. 1446 patients were identified and their data were analyzed. Median procedure time was 30.0 minutes and median long axis of the tumor was 20.1 mm. Technically difficult procedures including long procedure time were 231 cases (16.0%), perforation occurred in 34 cases (2.3%), and en bloc resection was done in 1292 cases (89.3%). Tumor size larger than 35 mm (odd ratio [OR]: 1.474, P = .047), central depression or ulceration in the lesion (OR: 1.474, P = .013), previous endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or polypectomy procedure (OR: 2.428, P = .020) were associated with technically difficult ESD. Descending colon-located tumor (OR: 5.355, P < .001), and use of IT knife (OR: 4.157, P = .003) were associated with perforation. Recognizing factors associated with technically difficult ESD can help in planning the ESD procedure beforehand.

PURPOSE: Sepsis-related deaths occur during both the early proinflammatory and the late immunosuppressive phases of the condition. The balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory responses is influenced by damaged cells that die via either proinflammatory necroptosis or anti-inflammatory apoptosis. Both forms of cell death may be mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during the proinflammatory response. Recent evidence suggests that exercise training boosts antioxidative capacity and could offer protection against sepsis. Given these findings, we aimed to examine the impact of exercise training on neural cell death in the context of sepsis. METHODS: We assessed the effectiveness of exercise in reducing ROS production and the inflammatory response using a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis model. Forty C57BL/6N male mice were randomly divided into 2 groups: control (CLP-Con; n=20) and experimental (CLP-Ex; n=20). Before the induction of sepsis by CLP, the CLP-Ex mice underwent interval training on a treadmill 3 days per week for 8 weeks. Each day involved 10 cycles of 2 minutes at 8 m/min and 2 minutes at 15 m/min. After the CLP procedure, we monitored the survival of 10 mice from each group over a 30-hour period. RESULTS: The findings indicated that exercise training increased the survival rate among mice with CLP-induced sepsis by enhancing antioxidative capacity and delaying the transition from a hyperdynamic to an immunosuppressive state. CONCLUSION: Exercise training may delay the progression from the hyperdynamic state to the hypodynamic phase of sepsis by increasing antioxidant capacity and reducing apoptotic cell death.

BACKGROUND: Malignant triton tumors (MTTs) comprise a subgroup of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) that exhibits rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation and follow an aggressive course. MTTs are primarily located along peripheral nerves. Cases of MTTs in the abdominal wall have not been reported. MTT has a poorer prognosis than classic MPNSTs, and accurate diagnosis necessitates a keen understanding of the clinical history and knowledge of its differential diagnosis intricacies. Treatment for MTTs mirrors that for MPNSTs and is predominantly surgical. CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old woman presented with a subcutaneous mass in her lower abdominal wall and a pre-existing surgical scar that had grown slowly over 3-4 months before the consultation. She had previously undergone radical hysterectomy and concurrent chemo-radiotherapy for cervical cancer approximately 5 years prior to the consultation. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a 1.3 cm midline mass in the lower abdomen with infiltration into the rectus abdominis muscle. There was no sign of metastasis (T1N0M0). An incisional biopsy identified sporadic MTT of the lower abdomen. A comprehensive surgical excision with a 3 cm margin inclusive of the peritoneum was executed. Subsequently, the general surgeon utilized an approach akin to the open peritoneal onlay mesh technique. The patient underwent additional treatment with an excision shaped as a mini-abdominoplasty for the skin defect. No complications arose, and annual follow-up CTs did not show signs of recurrence or metastasis. CONCLUSION: An abdominal MTT was efficaciously treated with extensive excision and abdominal wall reconstruction, eliminating the need for postoperative radiotherapy.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 200 common genetic variants independently associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but the causal variants and target genes are mostly unknown. We sought to fine-map all known CRC risk loci using GWAS data from 100,204 cases and 154,587 controls of East Asian and European ancestry. Our stepwise conditional analyses revealed 238 independent association signals of CRC risk, each with a set of credible causal variants (CCVs), of which 28 signals had a single CCV. Our cis-eQTL/mQTL and colocalization analyses using colorectal tissue-specific transcriptome and methylome data separately from 1299 and 321 individuals, along with functional genomic investigation, uncovered 136 putative CRC susceptibility genes, including 56 genes not previously reported. Analyses of single-cell RNA-seq data from colorectal tissues revealed 17 putative CRC susceptibility genes with distinct expression patterns in specific cell types. Analyses of whole exome sequencing data provided additional support for several target genes identified in this study as CRC susceptibility genes. Enrichment analyses of the 136 genes uncover pathways not previously linked to CRC risk. Our study substantially expanded association signals for CRC and provided additional insight into the biological mechanisms underlying CRC development.

Probiotics should possess specific properties to exert beneficial effects, and their safety must be ensured for human consumption. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the probiotic properties and safety of Limosilactobacillus mucosae NK41 and Bifidobacterium longum NK46 isolated from human feces in vitro. Both strains exhibited high resistance to simulated gastrointestinal fluid. Furthermore, probiotic-related cell surface characteristics including auto-aggregation and cell surface hydrophobicity were assessed by measuring the absorbance at a wavelength of 600 nm, which demonstrated good auto-aggregation ability and affinity for xylene, indicating their effective adhesion to Caco-2 cells. In addition, hemolytic, gelatinase, and ß-glucuronidase activities were found to be negative in both strains. The susceptibility to nine commonly used antibiotics was assessed using the broth macrodilution method, which demonstrated that both strains were susceptible to all tested antibiotics. Furthermore, L. mucosae NK41 and B. longum NK46 produced significantly higher levels of L-lactate (71.8 ± 0.7% and 97.8 ± 0.4%) than D-lactate (28.2 ± 0.7% and 2.2 ± 0.4%, respectively). Using PCR amplification to investigate genes associated with virulence factors, we found that neither strain harbored any virulence genes. These findings suggest that L. mucosae NK41 and B. longum NK46 have the potential to be used as probiotics and are considered safe for human consumption.

Background: Alzheimer-associated neuronal thread protein (AD7c-NTP) has been demonstrated to have high diagnostic accuracy in differentiating Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients from healthy individuals. However, it is yet unclear whether exercise can lower the level of AD7c-NTP in urine among active Korean elderly. Objective: To assess the effect of exercise on AD7c-ntp levels in urine and cognitive function among active Korean elderly. Methods: In total, 40 Korean elderly (≥65 years) were divided into Active Control group (CG, n = 10), Aerobic exercise group (AG, n = 18), and combined Resistance/Aerobic exercise group (RAG, n = 12). A total of 12 weeks of exercise intervention was implemented. At week 0 and 12, cognitive performance (Korean Mini-Mental State Examination, Korean-Color Word Stroop test), grip strength, and body composition (muscle mass and body fat percentage) were measured. Also, a morning urine sample was obtained from each subject. The level of AD7c-NTP was measured using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: After 12 weeks of exercise intervention, there was a significant difference of AD7c-NTP levels between RAG and CG (p = 0.026), AG and CG (p = 0.032), respectively. Furthermore, the AD7c-NTP levels in urine showed negative correlation with K-MMSE scores (r = -0.390, p = 0.013) and grip strength (r = -0.376, p = 0.017), among all participants after exercise intervention. Conclusions: This is the first study to investigate urine biomarker through exercise intervention. In future stuides, participants who have low cognitive function and low activity levels need to be recruited to observe more significant 'Exercise' effect.

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between serum oxylipins, which regulate tissue repair and pain signalling, and knee pain/radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) at baseline and knee pain at 3 year follow-up. METHOD: Baseline, and 3 year follow-up, knee pain phenotypes were assessed from 154 participants in the Knee Pain in the Community (KPIC) cohort study. Serum and radiographic Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) and Nottingham line drawing atlas OA scores were collected at baseline. Oxylipin levels were quantified using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Associations were measured by linear regression and receiver operating characteristics (ROC). RESULTS: Serum levels of 8,9-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EET) (ß(95% confidence intervals (CI)) = 1.809 (-0.71 to 2.91)), 14,15-dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (DHET) (ß(95%CI) = 0.827 (0.34-1.31)), and 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE) (ß(95%CI) = 4.090 (1.92-6.26)) and anandamide (ß(95%CI) = 3.060 (1.35-4.77)) were cross-sectionally associated with current self-reported knee pain scores (numerical rating scale (NRS) item 3, average pain). Serum levels of 9- (ß(95%CI) = 0.467 (0.18-0.75)) and 15-HETE (ß(95%CI) = 0.759 (0.29-1.22)), 14-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (ß(95%CI) = 0.483(0.24-0.73)), and the ratio of 8,9-EET:DHET (ß(95%CI) = 0.510(0.19-0.82)) were cross-sectionally associated with KL scores. Baseline serum concentrations of 8,9-EET (ß(95%CI) = 2.166 (0.89-3.44)), 5,6-DHET (ß(95%CI) = 152.179 (69.39-234.97)), and 5-HETE (ß(95%CI) = 1.724 (0.677-2.77) showed positive longitudinal associations with follow-up knee pain scores (NRS item 3, average pain). Combined serum 8,9-EET and 5-HETE concentration showed the strongest longitudinal association (ß(95%CI) = 1.156 (0.54-1.77) with pain scores at 3 years, and ROC curves distinguished between participants with no pain and high pain scores at follow-up (area under curve (95%CI) = 0.71 (0.61-0.82)). CONCLUSIONS: Serum levels of a combination of hydroxylated metabolites of arachidonic acid may have prognostic utility for knee pain, providing a potential novel approach to identify people who are more likely to have debilitating pain in the future.

The effects of metal oxides and clays on the transport of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in saturated porous media were investigated under different ionic strength (IS) conditions. We studied the transport and retention behavior of ZnO-NPs for different types of porous media (untreated, acid treated, and acid-salt treated sand). The selected untreated sand was used as a representative sand, coated with both metal oxide and clay. The acid treated and acid-salt-treated sands were used and compared to investigate the effects of clays on the surface of the sand. In addition, the effects of clay particles in bulk solutions on the mobility and retention of ZnO-NPs were observed using bentonite as a representative clay particle. We found that the increased mobility of positively charged ZnO-NPs can be attributed to increasing charge heterogeneity of silica sand with metal oxides (mainly, iron oxide) and clays in untreated sand. No breakthrough of ZnO-NP was observed for acid-treated (presence of clays and absence of metal oxides) and acid-salt-treated sand (absence of both metal oxide and clays). Most of the injected ZnO-NPs were deposited on the surface of the sand near the column inlet. The transport of bentonite-facilitated ZnO-NPs was improved at the lowest IS (0.1 mM) (∼20%), whereas there was no difference in the mobility of ZnO-NPs at high IS solutions (1 mM and 10 mM). In particular, the breakthrough amount improved with increasing bentonite concentration. Classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek interactions help explain observed interactions between ZnO-NPs and sand as well as bentonite and sand.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Committee (CoVaSC) was established in November 2021 to address the growing need for independent, in-depth scientific evidence on adverse events (AEs) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. This initiative was requested by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and led by the National Academy of Medicine of Korea. In September 2022, the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center was established, strengthening CoVaSC's initiatives. The center has conducted various studies on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. During CoVaSC's second research year, from September 29, 2022 to July 19, 2023, the center was restructured into 4 departments: Epidemiological Research, Clinical Research, Communication & Education, and International Cooperation & Policy Research. Its main activities include (1) managing CoVaSC and the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center, (2) surveying domestic and international trends in AE causality investigation, (3) assessing AEs following COVID-19 vaccination, (4) fostering international collaboration and policy research, and (5) organizing regular fora and training sessions for the public and clinicians. Causality assessments have been conducted for 27 diseases, and independent research has been conducted after organizing ad hoc committees comprising both epidemiologists and clinical experts on each AE of interest. The research process included protocol development, data analysis, interpretation of results, and causality assessment. These research outcomes have been shared transparently with the public and healthcare experts through various fora. The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center plans to continue strengthening and expanding its research activities to provide reliable, high-quality safety information to the public.

PURPOSE: Immuno-ethanol ablation using an ethanol and immune adjuvant formulation is investigated as a potent immuno-ablation approach that can achieve an enhanced anti-cancer effect in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ethanol concentration- and exposure time-dependent cellular responses were investigated. Curcumin was combined with ethanol as an immuno-ablation agent. Cellular uptake of curcumin, cancer cell killing, and inflammatory markers of ethanol-curcumin treatment were characterized. To evaluate the potential in vivo anti-cancer immunity of ethanol-curcumin treatment, each right and left lobe of rat liver was concurrently inoculated with N1S1 HCC cells and a mixture of treated N1S1 cells (ethanol only or ethanol-curcumin) in Sprague Dawley rats (Each group: 5 rats, Control: non-treated N1S1 cells). Tumor growth and immune response were characterized with 7T MRI, flowcytometry analysis, and immunohistology. RESULTS: An optimized ethanol-curcumin (10% ethanol and 0.5% w/v curcumin solution) treatment contributed to an enhanced cellular uptake of curcumin, increased cancer cell killing, and decreased inflammatory reaction. Ethanol-curcumin treated N1S1 cell implantation in the rat liver demonstrated N1S1 HCC tumor rejection. The secondary tumor growth by non-treated N1S1 cell inoculation was significantly suppressed at the same time. Activated anti-cancer immunity was evidenced by significantly increased CD8+ T cell infiltration (3.5-fold) and CD8+/Treg ratio (4.5-fold) in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Enhanced anti-cancer effect of immuno-ethanol ablation could be achieved with ethanol-curcumin agent. The results underscore the importance of optimized immuno-ablation therapeutic procedures for the enhanced therapeutic outcomes.

Background: Over the last few decades, shoulder surgery has undergone rapid advancements, with ongoing exploration and the development of innovative technological approaches. In the coming years, technologies such as robot-assisted surgeries, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, patient-specific instrumentation, and different innovative perioperative and preoperative planning tools will continue to fuel a revolution in the medical field, thereby pushing it toward new frontiers and unprecedented advancements. In relation to this, shoulder surgery will experience significant breakthroughs. Main body: Recent advancements and technological innovations in the field were comprehensively analyzed. We aimed to provide a detailed overview of the current landscape, emphasizing the roles of technologies. Computer-assisted surgery utilizing robotic- or image-guided technologies is widely adopted in various orthopedic specialties. The most advanced components of computer-assisted surgery are navigation and robotic systems, with functions and applications that are continuously expanding. Surgical navigation requires a visual system that presents real-time positional data on surgical instruments or implants in relation to the target bone, displayed on a computer monitor. There are three primary categories of surgical planning that utilize navigation systems. The initial category involves volumetric images, such as ultrasound echogram, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance images. The second type is based on intraoperative fluoroscopic images, and the third type incorporates kinetic information about joints or morphometric data about the target bones acquired intraoperatively. Conclusion: The rapid integration of artificial intelligence and deep learning into the medical domain has a significant and transformative influence. Numerous studies utilizing deep learning-based diagnostics in orthopedics have remarkable achievements and performance.

BACKGROUND: Time-activity pattern (TAP) is an important parameter for determining personal exposure to environmental pollutants. Changes in TAPs could have significant implications for the alterations in outcomes of exposure assessments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the Seoul population's long-term change in TAPs, along with variations by sociodemographic group. METHODS: In 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019, the Time Use Survey of Statistics Korea collected the TAP information of 4036, 2610, 3337, and 2793 Seoul residents, respectively. In 2022, the TAP information of 4401 Seoul residents was collected for Korean Air Pollutant Exposure (KAPEX) research. The microenvironmental TAP changes in the Seoul population from 2004 to 2022 were assessed based on age, gender, work status, and day type. RESULTS: From 2004 to 2022, Seoul people increasingly spent more time in indoor residences (from 14.8 ± 5.1 h to 15.8 ± 4.5 h) and less time in other indoors (from 7.2 ± 4.5 h to 5.9 ± 4.2 h). Their transit time constantly decreased from 2004 (1.4 ± 1.8 h) to 2022 (1.2 ± 1.3 h), whereas the outdoor time fluctuated throughout the years. From 2004 to 2022, the time of the day spent by Seoul people in residential indoor shifted to later in the morning (2004: 8:30 am; 2022: 9:00 am) and earlier in the evening (2004: 9:30 pm; 2022: 7:00 pm); however, the opposite was true for other indoors (2004: from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm; 2022: from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm) and transits (2004: 7:30-9:30 am and 3:00-8:00 pm; 2022: 7:30-9:00 pm and 5:00-9:00). The time of the day spent in outdoors increased from 2004 to 2019, with a distinct peak observed in 2022 (12:00 pm-2:00 pm). The microenvironmental time trends of adolescents and late-adulthoods differed from those of the other age groups, while those of males differed from females. Also, the microenvironmental time trends of the employed differed from those of the unemployed, and those during weekdays differed from those during weekends. IMPACT STATEMENT: Microenvironmental TAP should be essentially considered to estimate the actual exposure to pollutants. This study demonstrates the Seoul population's long-term changes in TAP throughout the 18 years as the significant parameter in exposure assessment. Notably, the microenvironmental TAPs of Seoul people shifted, with variations across different sociodemographic groups. Previous studies in Korea did not consider the TAP shifts in exposure assessment; this study highlights the importance of aligning TAP data with concurrent environmental pollutant data and emphasizes the need for refined data collection in future exposure assessments.

BACKGROUND: Phytochemicals have become a growing source of alternative medicine in developing countries due to the poor prognosis, high cost of conventional pharmaceuticals, and undesirable effects associated with mainstream cancer treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at investigating the anticancer effect of some selected Nigerian medicinal plants used in cancer treatment. These include ethanol extracts of Dialium guineense root (DGR), Dialium guineense leaves (DGL), Jateorhiza macrantha leaves (JML), Musanga cecropioides leaves (MCL), Musanga cecropioides stembark (MCSB), Piptadeniastrum africanum stembark (PASB), Piptadeniastrum africanum root (PAR), Pupalia lappacea flower tops (PLF), Raphiostylis beninensis root (RBR), Raphiostylis beninensis leaves (RBL), Ritchiea capparoides leaves (RCL), Ritchiea capparoides stembark (RCSB), and Triplochiton scleroxylon stembark (TSB). METHODS: The cytotoxic activity of the extracts was examined using a brine shrimp lethality assay and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay against three cancer cell lines, including MCF-7, HUH-7, and HeLa. The selectivity of all extracts towards cancer cells was investigated using normal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). Cell migration and colony-forming assays of active extracts against MCF-7 cells were also performed. Additionally, the total polyphenolic contents of the active extracts were estimated using standard methods. RESULTS: The extract of PASB had the highest cytotoxicity (LC50 = 1.58 µg/mL) on the brine shrimps compared to vincristine sulphate (LC50 = 2.24 µg/mL). In the cell viability assay, all the extracts produced significant (p < 0.05) growth inhibitory effects against all cell lines tested in a dose-dependent manner. All extracts were selective to cancer cells at varying degrees. Worth mentioning are the extracts of MCL, DGR, RBR, and PASB, which exhibited 14-, 7-, 6- and 2-fold selectivity toward MCF-7 cancer cells relative to normal lung fibroblast (MRC-5), respectively. These four extracts also significantly inhibited cell migration and colony formation in MCF-7-treated cells in dose-dependent manners. Considerable amounts of phenolics, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins were detected in all extracts evaluated. CONCLUSION: These findings advocate the continued development of MCL, DGR, RBR, and PASB as potential chemotherapeutic agents.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a semiconducting two-dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenide (2D TMDC), with attractive properties enables the opening of a new electronics era beyond Si. However, the notoriously high contact resistance (RC) regardless of the electrode metal has been a major challenge in the practical applications of MoS2-based electronics. Moreover, it is difficult to lower RC because the conventional doping technique is unsuitable for MoS2 due to its ultrathin nature. Therefore, the metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) architecture has been proposed as a method to fabricate a reliable and stable contact with low RC. Herein, we introduce a strategy to fabricate MIS contact based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) to dramatically reduce the RC of single-layer MoS2 field effect transistors (FETs). We utilize ALD Al2O3 as an interlayer for the MIS contact of bottom-gated MoS2 FETs. Based on the Langmuir isotherm, the uniformity of ALD Al2O3 films on MoS2 can be increased by modulating the precursor injection pressures even at low temperatures of 150 °C. We discovered, for the first time, that film uniformity critically affects RC without altering the film thickness. Additionally, we can add functionality to the uniform interlayer by adopting isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as an oxidant. Tunneling resistance across the MIS contact is lowered by n-type doping of MoS2 induced by IPA as the oxidant in the ALD process. Through a highly uniform interlayer combined with strong doping, the contact resistance is improved by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that of other MoS2 FETs fabricated in this study.
