RESUMO

Natural species have developed complex nanostructures in a hierarchical pattern to control the absorption, reflection, or transmission of desired solar and infrared wavelengths. This bio-inspired structure is a promising method to manipulating solar energy and thermal management. In particular, human hair is used in this article to highlight the optothermal properties of bio-inspired structures. This study investigated how melanin, an effective solar absorber, and the structural morphology of aligned domains of keratin polymer chains, leading to a significant increase in solar path length, which effectively scatter and absorb solar radiation across the hair structure, as well as enhance thermal ramifications from solar absorption by fitting its radiative wavelength to atmospheric transmittance for high-yield radiative cooling with realistic human body thermal emission.

RESUMO

Although the personal protective equipment (PPE) used by healthcare workers (HCWs) effectively blocks hazardous substances and pathogens, it does not fully rule out the possibility of infection, as pathogens surviving on the fabric surface pose a substantial risk of cross-infection through unintended means. Therefore, PPE materials that exhibit effective biocidal activity while minimizing contamination by viscous body fluids (e.g., blood and saliva) and pathogen-laden droplets are highly sought. In this study, petal-like nanostructures (PNSs) are synthesized through the vertical rearrangement of colloidal lamellar bilayers via evaporation-induced self-assembly of octadecylamine, silica-alumina sol, and diverse photosensitizer. The developed method is compatible with various fabrics and imparts visible-light-activated antimicrobial and superhydrophobic-based antifouling activities. PNS-coated fabrics could provide a high level of protection and effectively block pathogen transmission as exemplified by their ability to roll off viscous body fluids reducing bacterial droplet adhesion and to inactivate various microorganisms. The combination of antifouling and photobiocidal activities results in the complete inactivation of sprayed pathogen-laden droplets within 30 min. Thus, this study paves the way for effective contagious disease management and the protection of HCWs in general medical environments, inspiring further research on the fabrication of materials that integrate multiple useful functionalities.

RESUMO

Radiative cooling has attracted tremendous interest as it can tackle global warming by saving energy consumption in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in buildings. Polymer materials play an important role in radiative cooling owing to their high infrared emissivity. Along this line, numerous studies on optically optimized geometries were carried out to enhance the selective wavelength absorption for high infrared emissivity; however, the polymer material itself relatively was not investigated and optimized enough. Herein, we investigate the infrared radiation (IR) absorption coefficient of various polymer types, and introduce a new concept of radiative-cooling composites. By dispersing the IR scattering medium in a polymer matrix, IR can be effectively scattered and attenuated by the polymer matrix. Indium tin oxide was utilized as the IR scattering medium in a cellulose acetate polymer matrix in this report. The window film was made with this composite and showed an effective cooling performance by outdoor thermal evaluation. This composite opens a new venue to endow materials with enhanced radiative-cooling property regardless of the polymer types.

RESUMO

5G acts as a highway enabling innovative digital transformation and the Fourth Industrial Revolution in our lives. It is undeniable that the success of such a paradigm shift hinges on robust security measures. Foremost among these is primary authentication, the initial step in securing access to 5G network environments. For the 5G primary authentication, two protocols, namely 5G Authentication and Key Agreement (5G-AKA) and Improved Extensible Authentication Protocol Method for 3rd Generation Authentication and Key Agreement (EAP-AKA'), were proposed and standardized, where the former is for 3GPP devices, and the latter is for non-3GPP devices. Recent scrutiny has unveiled vulnerabilities in the 5G-AKA protocol, exposing it to security breaches, including linkability attacks. Moreover, mobile communication technologies are dramatically evolving while 3GPP has standardized Authentication and Key Management for Applications (AKMA) to reuse the credentials, generated during primary authentication, for 5G network applications. That makes it so significant for 5G-AKA to be improved to support forward secrecy as well as address security attacks. In response, several protocols have been proposed to mitigate these security challenges. In particular, they tried to strengthen security by reusing secret keys negotiated through the Elliptic Curve Integrated Encryption Scheme (ECIES) and countering linkability attacks. However, they still have encountered limitations in completing forward secrecy. Motivated by this, we propose an augmentation to 5G-AKA to achieve forward security and thwart linkability attacks (called 5G-AKA-FS). In 5G-AKA-FS, the home network (HN), instead of using its static ECIES key pair, generates a new ephemeral key pair to facilitate robust session key negotiation, truly realizing forward security. In order to thoroughly and precisely prove that 5G-AKA-FS is secure, formal security verification is performed by applying both BAN Logic and ProVerif. As a result, it is demonstrated that 5G-AKA-FS is valid. Besides, our performance comparison highlights that the communication and computation overheads are intrinsic to 5G-AKA-FS. This comprehensive analysis showcases how the protocol effectively balances between security and efficiency.

RESUMO

Obesity is a prevalent health issue. Evidence suggests that the availability of urban nature may reduce the risks of obesity. However, several knowledge gaps remain. This study explores the relationships between the dose (distance, duration and frequency) of urban nature and demographic factors towards obesity risks among people in Thailand. A total of 111 participants in three urban and peri-urban nature locations answered a survey regarding their distance from green spaces, frequency of visits, and duration of their typical stay, as well as their socio-demographics, and waist-hip ratio (WHR). The results suggested that at least 1-2 h per typical visit to nature predicted low-risk WHR in women. Male participants are more likely to have a high-risk WHR. Increasing age predicted low-risk WHR. Spending more time in green spaces predicted lower odds of high-risk WHR, while distance did not predict the odds. This research is one of the first to study the relationship between time spent in nature and obesity, and one of the first nature and health studies conducted in Thailand. Given that Thailand is one of the countries most affected by obesity in Southeast Asia, this study is relevant and essential. Future research should explore the quality factors of the park with longer duration of stay.

RESUMO

With the rapid development of urban construction, the waterfront industrial heritage park has played an active role in shaping the city's image, regional economic development and environmental improvement, and the continuation of the city's waterfront history. The waterfront park based on industrial heritage using post-occupancy evaluation will help improve the sustainable management, maintenance, and design level of the project in the future. However, there is insufficient research on the waterfront industrial heritage park using post-occupancy evaluation. This paper takes Shanghai Houtan Park and Xuhui Binjiang Park, the representative industrial heritage parks in China, as the research objects. Through field investigation and nearly 200 questionnaires and interviews regarding user behavior, the importance of design elements (place characteristics, natural environmental characteristics, usability characteristics, and administrative characteristics) and the correlation of satisfaction help us to understand the use of the two parks and analyze and organize the survey data, carrying out the analysis of the questionnaire results using frequency analysis, IPA analysis, t-test, variance analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The research results include: (1) Both parks are mainly used by people in their twenties and forties, and the trail received the highest utilization rate as the main facility, while the visitor center in charge of guiding functions had the lowest utilization rate. (2) While Houtan Park received high satisfaction with natural environmental characteristics, it was found that Xu Hui Binjiang Park had relatively high satisfaction with the place and usability characteristics. (3) The natural environmental characteristics of Houtan Park have a positive impact on overall satisfaction and return visit satisfaction. Site characteristics and utilization characteristics of Xuhui Binjiang Industrial Park have a positive impact on overall satisfaction, while usability characteristics have a positive impact on return visit satisfaction. Finally, according to the questions and suggestions raised by users, an optimization strategy is proposed for the renewal of the park, and it is hoped that it can provide suggestions for the reconstruction and design of similar Chinese waterfront industrial heritage parks.

RESUMO

Government-level ESG (environmental, social, and governance) institutionalization and active ESG activation in the private sector are being discussed for the first time this year in Korea, spurred by increased national interest since the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and the declaration of a carbon-neutral society by 2050, and ESG discussion in many fields is spreading rapidly. In addition, global awareness of the crisis caused by environmental pollution and natural disasters has highlighted the importance of green infrastructure (GI) as a new conceptual alternative to improve public value. Based on sustainability, which is a common goal of ESG and green infrastructure, this study aimed to examine the research targets and techniques of green infrastructure from the perspective of ESG. This study selected and analyzed 98 domestic and international academic journal papers published over the past 10 years in the Web of Science academic journal database literature collection. Focusing on the research subjects, the focus on green infrastructure, and research keywords, we examined the aspects of the green infrastructure plan that have been focused on from the ESG perspective and compared domestic and international research trends. In addition, implications for how each research topic is connected to the concept of ESG according to its function and purpose were derived. By examining the domestic and international research trends of green infrastructure from the ESG perspective, we identified the need for a wider range of research on the diversity and relationship between humans and the ecological environment; policies and systems; and technical research that does not focus only on a specific field. In this regard, we intend to increase the contribution to ESG management in the public sector through the establishment of green infrastructure plans and policies in the future, as they account for a large portion of public capital.

RESUMO

Populating and depopulating cities have some degree of underutilised land. The duration of vacancy, or length of time a property remains unused, more strongly influences urban decline than the amount of vacant land. Assessment of the duration of vacancy is seldom conducted, due to a lack of linking longitudinal data. This research creates and applies a Python script to track the duration of vacancy in Minneapolis, MN, U.S.A, to create a tool that can be utilised by cities with vacant land inventories. The tool can be used globally to prioritise treatment areas for urban regeneration plans.

RESUMO

Owing to their outstanding electrical/electrochemical performance, operational stability, mechanical flexibility, and decent biocompatibility, organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors have shown great potential as implantable electrodes for neural recording/stimulation and as active channels for signal switching/amplifying transistors. Nonetheless, no studies exist on a general design rule for high-performance electrochemical diodes, which are essential for highly functional circuit architectures. In this work, generalizable electrochemical diodes with a very high current density over 30 kA cm-2 are designed by introducing an asymmetric active layer based on organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors. The underlying mechanism on polarity-sensitive balanced ionic doping/dedoping is elucidated by numerical device analysis and in operando spectroelectrochemical potential mapping, while the general material requirements for electrochemical diode operation are deduced using various types of conjugated polymers. In parallel, analog signal rectification and digital logic processing circuits are successfully demonstrated to show the broad impact of circuits incorporating organic electrochemical diodes. It is expected that organic electrochemical diodes will play vital roles in realizing multifunctional soft bioelectronic circuitry in combination with organic electrochemical transistors.

RESUMO

Radiative cooling in textiles is one of the important factors enabling cooling of the human body for thermal comfort. In particular, under an intense sunlight environment such as that experienced with outdoor exercise and sports activities, high near-infrared (NIR) reflectance to block sunlight energy influx along with high IR transmittance in textiles for substantial thermal emission from the human body would be highly desirable. This investigation demonstrates that a nanoscale geometric control of textile structure alone, instead of complicated introduction of specialty polymer materials and composites, can enable such desirable NIR and IR optical properties in textiles. A diameter-dependent Mie scattering event in fibers and associated optical and thermal behavior were simulated in relation to a nonwoven, nanomesh textile. As an example, a nanomesh structure made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) electrospun fibers with ∼600 nm average diameter was examined, which exhibited a significant radiative cooling performance with over 90% solar and NIR reflectance to profoundly block the sunlight energy influx as well as ∼50% IR transmittance for human body radiative heat dissipation. An extraordinary cooling effect, as much as 12 °C, was obtained on a simulated skin compared to the normal textile fabric materials. Such a powerful radiative cooling performance together with IR transmitting capability by the nanomesh textile offers a way to efficiently manage sunlight radiation energy to make persons, devices, and transport vehicles cooler and help to save energy in an outdoor sunlight environment as well as indoor conditions.

RESUMO

Many cities worldwide are using re-greening strategies to help reverse urbanization patterns that aggravate environmental issues. Green infrastructure (GI) has become a significant and effective strategy to address environmental problems. To better understand GI, this study uses CiteSpace to analyze 5420 published papers in the field of GI on the Web of Science database from 1990-2020. This bibliometric analysis will help new scholars and researchers to better understand the current status and trends in GI research, as well as identify further research needed in the field. This study evaluated research on GI trends according to publication amounts, keywords, journals, disciplines, countries, institutions, and authors. Results show that, first, GI research has experienced rapid growth since 2014. Second, GI, ecosystem services, and city are the top three keywords related to GI research, with green roof as the keyword with the strongest linkage. Third, Sustainability, Urban Forestry and Urban Greening, and Landscape and Urban Planning are the top three journals publishing GI research. Fourth, the top three disciplines researching GI are environmental science, engineering, and science and technology. Fifth, the USA is the top ranked country in terms of the number of published GI-related papers (1514 papers), followed by China (730 papers) and England (546 papers). Sixth, the US Environmental Protection Agency (84 papers) is the top institution in terms of publications, followed by the Chinese Academy of Science (83 papers) and the Swedish University of Agriculture (66 papers). Finally, D. Haase has the most published articles (29 papers), followed by S. Pauleit (28 papers) and P. Angelstam (26 papers). These findings indicate that GI has developed significantly in the last 30 years, with a high probability for increased growth in the future.

RESUMO

Two new glycolated semiconducting polymers PgBT(F)2gT and PgBT(F)2gTT of differing backbone curvatures were designed and synthesised for application as p-type accumulation mode organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) materials. Both polymers demonstrated stable and reversible oxidation, accessible within the aqueous electrochemical window, to generate polaronic charge carriers. OECTs fabricated from PgBT(F)2gT featuring a curved backbone geometry attained a higher volumetric capacitance of 170 F cm-3 . However, PgBT(F)2gTT with a linear backbone displayed overall superior OECT performance with a normalised peak transconductance of 3.00×104  mS cm-1 , owing to its enhanced order, expediting the charge mobility to 0.931 cm2 V-1 s-1 .

RESUMO

Purpose: This study investigated the role of limitrin in the pathogenesis of demyelinating optic neuritis using an experimental autoimmune optic neuritis (EAON) model. Methods: EAON was induced in mice via subcutaneous injection with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein peptide. Limitrin protein and mRNA expression were examined in the optic nerve before and after EAON induction. Proinflammatory cytokine expression profiles and degree of glial activation were compared between wild-type (WT) and limitrin knockout mice by real-time PCR and histologic analysis, respectively, after EAON induction. Plasma limitrin levels in patients with optic neuritis and healthy controls were measured by ELISA. Results: Limitrin expression, observed in astrocytes in the optic nerve of WT mice, was lower in EAON-induced than in naïve WT mice. A comparative analysis of WT and limitrin knockout mice revealed that limitrin deficiency induced more severe neuroinflammation and glial hyperactivation in the optic nerve after EAON induction. Limitrin-deficient astrocytes were more chemotactically responsive to neuroinflammatory stimulation than WT astrocytes. Patients with optic neuritis demonstrated higher plasma limitrin levels than healthy controls (P = 0.0001), which was negatively correlated with visual acuity at the nadir of the optic neuritis attack (r = 0.46, P = 0.036). Conclusions: Limitrin deficiency induced severe neuroinflammation and reactive gliosis in the optic nerve after EAON induction. Our results imply that astrocyte-derived limitrin may protect against neuroinflammation by decreasing immune cell infiltration into the optic nerve. The plasma limitrin level may reflect the extent of blood-brain barrier disruption and provide a valuable biomarker reflecting the severity of optic neuritis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is increasing interest in the quality of health care and considerable efforts are being made to improve it. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease that can result in favorable outcomes when appropriate diagnosis and treatment are provided. However, several studies have shown that RA is often managed inappropriately. Therefore, the Korean College of Rheumatology aimed to develop quality indicators (QIs) to evaluate and improve the health care of patients with RA. METHODS: Preliminary QIs were derived based on the existing guidelines and QIs for RA. The final QIs were determined through two separate consensus meetings of experts. The consensus was achieved through a panel of experts who voted using the modified Delphi method. RESULTS: Fourteen final QIs were selected among 70 preliminary QIs. These included early referral to and regular follow-up with a rheumatologist, radiographs of the hands and feet, early initiation and maintenance of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy, periodic assessment of disease activity, screening for drug safety and comorbidities, including viral hepatitis and tuberculosis before biologic DMARD therapy, periodic laboratory testing, supplementation with folic acid, assessment of the risk for cervical spine instability before general anesthesia, patient education, and specialized nurse. CONCLUSION: These QIs can be used to assess and improve the quality of health care for patients with RA.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare the long-term implant survival and outcomes in patients with high-flexion cruciate-retaining (CR) or high-flexion posterior cruciate-substituting (PS) knee implants. A total of 253 knees (CR group: 159 vs. PS group: 94) were available for examination over a mean follow-up of 10 years. Clinical outcomes were assessed including the Hospital for Special Surgery score, Knee Society score and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score at the final follow-up. Radiologic measurements were also assessed including the hip-knee-ankle angle and radiolucent lines according to the KSS system at the final follow-up. The survival rate was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. At the final follow-up, the mean total HSS scores were similar between the two groups (p = 0.970). The mean hip-knee-ankle angle at the final follow-up was similar between groups (p = 0.601). The 10- and 15-year survival rates were 95.4% and 93.3% in the CR group and 92.7% and 90.9% in the PS group, respectively, with no significant difference. Similar clinical and radiographic outcomes could be achieved with both the high-flexion CR and high-flexion PS total knee designs without a difference in survival rate after a 10-year follow-up.

RESUMO

Two physical properties in polymers, hydrophobic and water-absorptive, are known to be incompatible. However, human skin in nature has a hydrophobic surface and yet absorbs water throughout hydrophilic amino acid sequences in filaggrin, one of the abundant proteins in our outermost skin layer. Although present in nature, a hydrophilic path network in a hydrophobic polymer is difficult to synthesize because of poor wettability and immiscibility between the two types of materials. Herein, we introduce a novel method for the creation of a hydrophobic absorptive polymer (HPHG), which overcomes the inherent incompatibility by increasing hydrophobicity of reaction sites in hydrophilic monomers. The methacrylate structure in hydrophilic monomers successfully contributes to stabilize reverse emulsions, which consist of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) methacrylate and polyethyleneglycol (PEG) dimethacrylate, in a hydrophobic matrix of polymethylhydrosiloxane and divinylpolydimethylsiloxane (PDMS material sources). The HPHG film (with a 11 weight percent water content) shows water repellency having over 100° contact angle with a water droplet and yet is capable of absorbing water by 19.1 weight percent while maintaining decent hydrophobicity on the surface (78° water contact angle). We have successfully demonstrated a moisture-driven actuator by constructing a bilayer of HPHG and PDMS (or a textile), which is delamination-free and transforms into a curvature geometry by a preferential expansion of the HPHG layer. HPHG is applicable for soft robotics and smart actuators where a hydrophobic artificial skin is needed to protect the surface against hydrophilic invasions of undesirable substances such as metal ions, bacteria, or viruses but absorptive for desirable evaporation and mobility by water migration in the polymer matrix.

RESUMO

We propose a synthesis method for hollow copolymer nanoparticles, in which the size is controllable by the wettability of the materials designed by relative energy difference (RED). We investigated the influence of cross-linkers in RED and the hollow polymer nanoparticle synthesis. The size of the nanoparticles was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images. The diameter size of the hollow copolymer (styrene-co-methyl methacrylate) changes from 400 to 141 nm and the average core-vacancy sizes changes from 330 to 71 nm as increasing the feed ratio of the cross-linker, divinyl benzene, from 0.07 to 0.43. Cross-linkers in polymerization precipitates a polymerization reaction to produce seed copolymer particles quickly. The seed copolymer is a more transferrable medium through the surfactants across emulsion droplets and inhibits emulsion growth by unstable concentration variations of seed copolymers in emulsions. Therefore, Ostwald ripening was reduced by a higher feeding ratio of the cross-linker in the copolymer, which tends to produce smaller sized hollow nanoparticles.

RESUMO

Patients with systemic rheumatic diseases (SRD) are vulnerable for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The Korean College of Rheumatology recognized the urgent need to develop recommendations for rheumatologists and other physicians to manage patients with SRD during the COVID-19 pandemic. The working group was organized and was responsible for selecting key health questions, searching and reviewing the available literature, and formulating statements. The appropriateness of the statements was evaluated by voting panels using the modified Delphi method. Four general principles and thirteen individual recommendations were finalized through expert consensus based on the available evidence. The recommendations included preventive measures against COVID-19, medicinal treatment for stable or active SRD patients without COVID-19, medicinal treatment for SRD patients with COVID-19, and patient evaluation and monitoring. Medicinal treatments were categorized according to the status with respect to both COVID-19 and SRD. These recommendations should serve as a reference for individualized treatment for patients with SRD. As new evidence is emerging, an immediate update will be required.
