RESUMO

In this study, we hypothesized that top-down sensory prediction error due to peripheral hearing loss might influence sensorimotor integration using the efference copy (EC) signals as functional connections between auditory and motor brain areas. Using neurophysiological methods, we demonstrated that the auditory responses to self-generated sound were not suppressed in a group of patients with tinnitus accompanied by significant hearing impairment and in a schizophrenia group. However, the response was attenuated in a group with tinnitus accompanied by mild hearing impairment, similar to a healthy control group. The bias of attentional networks to self-generated sound was also observed in the subjects with tinnitus with significant hearing impairment compared to those with mild hearing impairment and healthy subjects, but it did not reach the notable disintegration found in those in the schizophrenia group. Even though the present study had significant constraints in that we did not include hearing loss subjects without tinnitus, these results might suggest that auditory deafferentation (hearing loss) may influence sensorimotor integration process using EC signals. However, the impaired sensorimotor integration in subjects with tinnitus with significant hearing impairment may have resulted from aberrant auditory signals due to sensory loss, not fundamental deficits in the reafference system, as the auditory attention network to self-generated sound is relatively well preserved in these subjects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: South Korea has one of the world's fastest aging populations and is witnessing increased age-related hearing impairment cases as well as an increase in the number of hearing aid users. The aim of this study was to analyze complications caused by hearing aid mold materials. In addition, we hope to raise awareness of the harm and danger that inexperienced hearing aid providers can cause to patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 11 patients who were diagnosed with hearing aid mold material as a foreign body in the ear at a tertiary center between 2016 and 2020. The following data were analyzed: symptoms, endoscopic findings, audiometry, temporal bone CT images, treatment methods, and complications after removal. The currently available literature was also reviewed to develop clinical guidelines, to identify the systematic weaknesses in the South Korean hearing aid market, and to identify policies that warrant better quality control. RESULTS: Among the 11 cases, 9 were restricted to the external auditory canal, all of which were successfully removed under endoscopy with minor complications. Two cases with middle ear involvement resulted in infection and thus required surgical removal with mastoidectomy. The average age of these patients was 76.4, and all patients received their molding procedure at private hearing aid shops without an otolaryngologist's examination. CONCLUSION: Thorough patient history-taking and otologic examination must be performed to identify patients at higher risk of complications. Such patients should be referred to an otolaryngologist. If a patient exhibits alarming symptoms, early referral is critical since prompt surgery can minimize complications. A CT scan is highly recommended to determine an optimal approach for foreign body removal. Systematic and regulatory changes in hearing aid dispensers, such as requiring apprenticeship, raising the required level of education, and legally mandating referrals, can help reduce these complications.

RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) shed from kidney mesenchymal stem cells (KMSCs) show protective effects against acute kidney injury and progressive kidney fibrosis via mRNA transfer. Previous studies report improvement of renal anemia following administration of genetically modified MSCs or peritoneal mesothelial cells that secrete erythropoietin (EPO). Here, we determined whether EPO-secreting KMSC-derived EVs (EPO(+)-EVs) can improve renal anemia in mouse models of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The mouse CKD and renal anemia model was induced by electrocoagulation of the right renal cortex and sequential left nephrectomy. At six weeks post-nephrectomy, we observed significantly lower hemoglobin (10.4 ± 0.2 vs. 13.2 ± 0.2 g/dL) and significantly higher blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels in CKD mice relative to controls (60.5 ± 0.5 and 0.37 ± 0.09 mg/dL vs. 19.9 ± 0.5 and 0.12 ± 0.02 mg/dL, respectively). Genetically engineered EPO(+)-KMSCs secreted 71 IU/mL EPO/106 cells/24 h in vitro, and EPO(+)-EVs isolated by differential ultracentrifugation expressed EPO mRNA and horizontally transferred EPO mRNA into target cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, at two weeks post-injection of EPO(+)-KMSCs or EPO(+)-EVs into CKD mice with renal anemia, we observed significant increases in hemoglobin levels (11.7 ± 0.2 and 11.5 ± 0.2 vs. 10.1 ± 0.2 g/dL, respectively) and significantly lower serum creatinine levels at eight weeks in comparison to mice receiving vehicle control (0.30 ± 0.00 and 0.23 ± 0.03 vs. 0.43 ± 0.06 mg/dL, respectively). These results demonstrate that intraperitoneal administration of EPO(+)-EVs significantly increased hemoglobin levels and renal function in CKD mice, suggesting the efficacy of these genetically engineered EVs as a promising novel strategy for the treatment of renal anemia.

RESUMO

Three V-shaped host molecules with a cyclohexane linker were successfully synthesized for thermally activated delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes (TADF-OLEDs). The unipolar host molecules, BBCzC and BTDC, contained two 9-phenyl-9H-3,9'-bicarbazole (PBCz) moieties and two 2,12-di-tert-butyl-7-phenyl-5,9-dioxa-13b-boranaphtho[3,2,1-de]anthracene (PDBNA) moieties, respectively. BCzTC, a bipolar host molecule, consisted of a donor unit, PBCz, and an acceptor unit, PDBNA, connected by a cyclohexane linker. Three host molecules showed good solubility in various organic solvents, making them suitable for solution processing. Among the solution-processed green TADF-OLEDs using three host molecules and a green TADF emitter, the one with BCzTC showed the highest external quantum efficiency of up to 30% with a high power efficiency of 71 lm W-1 and a current efficiency of 102 cd A-1. Compared with BBCzC and BTDC, BCzTC exhibited a relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), an excellent balance in hole and electron transport properties in the emitting layer, and more efficient energy transfer to the emitter, giving such an excellent device performance.

RESUMO

Conjugated random terpolymers, PJ-25, PJ-50, and PJ-75 were successfully synthesized from three different monomers. Fluorine-substituted benzotriazole (2F-BTA) was incorporated into 4,8-bis(4-chlorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT-T-Cl) and a 1,3-bis(4-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-alkyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione (BDD)-based alternating copolymer PM7 as a third monomeric unit. The solubility of the random terpolymers in nonhalogenated solvents increased with the number of 2F-BTA units in PM7. The random terpolymers were mixed with 3,9-bis(2-methylene-((3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-6,7-difluoro)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (IT-4F) to fabricate organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. Among the three terpolymers and two related binary copolymers (e.g., PM7 and J52-Cl), outdoor photovoltaic (PV) cells (AM 1.5G) based on the PJ-50:IT-4F blend showed a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.34%. In addition, PJ-50 was employed as a donor in indoor PV (IPV) cells and was blended with nonfullerene acceptors, which have different absorption ranges. Among them, the PJ-50:IT-4F-based IPV device had the highest PCE of 17.41% with a Jsc of 54.75 µA cm-2 and an FF of 0.77 under 160 µW cm-2 light-emitting diode (LED) light. The terpolymer introduced in this study can be regarded as a promising material for the fabrication of outdoor PV and IPV cells with excellent performance involving the use of an eco-friendly solvent.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between thyroid function and tinnitus. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 was used. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTIONS: A total of 1,165 participants ≥ 40 years old who were surveyed for the presence of tinnitus and underwent thyroid function tests were included. The presence of discomfort from tinnitus was defined as annoying tinnitus. The control group included participants with "no tinnitus" or "no discomfort from tinnitus." The participants were divided into the annoying tinnitus group and the control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The associations of free thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with annoying tinnitus were analyzed using logistic regression with complex sampling methods. Subgroup analyses were performed according to sex. RESULTS: The low TSH level group had 2.35-fold greater odds of annoying tinnitus than the control group (95% confidence interval  = 1.10-5.12, p = 0.027). Even in patients with a normal free thyroxine level, a low TSH level was related to 2.78-fold higher odds of annoying tinnitus (95% confidence interval  = 1.21-6.38, p = 0.016). In subgroup analyses, this association was apparent in the female subgroup. The male subgroup did not show a relationship between low TSH levels and annoying tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical hyperthyroidism was related to an increased risk of annoying tinnitus. This relationship was apparent in the female subgroup.

RESUMO

Large-scale wireless sensor networks are characterized by stringent energy and computation restrictions. It is exceedingly difficult to change a sensor network's environment configurations, such as the number of sensor nodes, after deployment of the nodes. Although several simulators are able to variously construct simulation models for sensor networks before their deployment, the configurations should be modified with extra human effort as the simulators cannot freely generate diverse models. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, called a system entity structure and model base for large-scale wireless sensor networks (WSN-SES/MB), which is based on discrete event system specification formalism. Our proposed framework synthesizes the structure and models for sensor networks through our modeling construction process. The proposed framework achieves time and cost savings in constructing discrete event simulation-based models. In addition, the framework increases the diversity of simulation models by the process's pruning algorithm. The simulation results validate that the proposed framework provides up to 8% time savings and up to 23% cost savings as compared to the manual extra effort.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Meningioma is a neoplasm arising from cells related to the arachnoid villi. The aim of the present study was to explore the clinical and radiological characteristics of temporal bone meningioma (TBM) in a multicenter cohort. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Thirteen patients diagnosed with TBM at eight medical institutes between 1998 and 2018 were retrospectively enrolled. The clinical procedures, symptoms, signs, and images that led to the diagnosis of TBM were investigated for all patients. RESULTS: The most common symptom at the initial visit was hearing loss (n = 12/13, 92.3%). All patients exhibited unilateral TBMs with varied symptom durations (1-60 months). Four patients presented masses occupying the external auditory canal; the tympanic membrane (TM) could not be evaluated. The other nine patients did not show TM perforation despite the presence of inflammatory signs. The majority of patients exhibited unilateral conductive or mixed hearing loss. A retrospective review of temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT) images revealed findings suggestive of a tumor in all patients. However, three patients had been misdiagnosed with chronic otitis media and were subjected to tympanomastoidectomy (n = 3/7, 42.9%). TBCT findings that suggested TBM included diffuse trabecular hyperostosis in the middle and posterior cranial fossae and widening and destruction of the temporal bone in the jugular bulb area. CONCLUSIONS: TBM should be suspected if patients exhibit persistent inflammatory symptoms or signs involving intact TM or unilateral conductive or mixed hearing loss with trabecular hyperostosis or destruction of the temporal bone on computed tomography images. RESUMO

Even though reciprocal inhibitory vestibular interactions following visual stimulation have been understood as sensory-reweighting mechanisms to stabilize motion perception; this hypothesis has not been thoroughly investigated with temporal dynamic measurements. Recently, virtual reality technology has been implemented in different medical domains. However, exposure in virtual reality environments can cause discomfort, including nausea or headache, due to visual-vestibular conflicts. We speculated that self-motion perception could be altered by accelerative visual motion stimulation in the virtual reality situation because of the absence of vestibular signals (visual-vestibular sensory conflict), which could result in the sickness. The current study investigated spatio-temporal profiles for motion perception using immersive virtual reality. We demonstrated alterations in neural dynamics under the sensory mismatch condition (accelerative visual motion stimulation) and in participants with high levels of sickness after driving simulation. Additionally, an event-related potentials study revealed that the high-sickness group presented with higher P3 amplitudes in sensory mismatch conditions, suggesting that it would be a substantial demand of cognitive resources for motion perception on sensory mismatch conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Significant association between serum albumin-to-globulin (AG) ratio and inflammation led us to investigate the prognostic value of serum AG ratio for incident CKD. METHODS: The predictive value of serum AG ratio, white blood cell (WBC), and C-reactive protein (CRP) for CKD development was assessed in 8,057 non-CKD participants from a community-based, prospective cohort in Korea. Serum AG ratio was calculated by following equation: serum albumin (g/L)/[serum total protein (g/L)-serum albumin (g/L)]. Incident CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and/or proteinuria of more than 1+ on dipstick. RESULTS: Median serum AG ratio was 1.38 (interquartile range, 1.28-1.52). During a mean follow-up duration of 9.1±3.7 years, 1,732 participants (21.5%) developed CKD. In a multivariable Cox analysis, a low serum AG ratio was significantly associated with an increased risk of incident CKD (Q1, serum AG ratio <1.26: hazard ratio [HR] = 1.651, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.406-1.938, Q5 as reference; per 0.2 decrease, HR = 1.170, 95% CI = 1.109-1.234). Serum AG ratio was the only indicator to improve the predictability of CKD development (net reclassification index = 0.158, P <0.001; integrated discrimination improvement = 0.005, P <0.001), compared with WBC or CRP. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that low serum AG ratio is an independent predictor for CKD development and exhibits a stronger predictive value than other inflammatory markers. These findings suggest that determining serum AG ratio may be more valuable for predicting adverse kidney outcomes in non-CKD populations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF) plays an important role in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its pathogenesis involves epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) upon renal injury. Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) has been shown to display novel cytoprotective effects, in part by inhibiting transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1-induced EMT. Here, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of microparticles (MPs) derived from human EPO gene-transfected kidney mesenchymal stem cells (hEPO-KMSCs) against TGF-ß1-induced EMT in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and against TIF in mouse kidneys with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). METHODS: EMT was induced in MDCK cells by treatment with TGF-ß1 (5 ng/mL) for 48 h and then inhibited by co-treatment with rhEPO (100 IU/mL), mock gene-transfected KMSC-derived MPs (MOCK-MPs), or hEPO-KMSC-derived MPs (hEPO-MPs) for a further 48 h. UUO was induced in FVB/N mice, which were then treated with rhEPO (1000 IU/kg, intraperitoneally, every other day for 1 week), MOCK-MPs, or hEPO-MPs (80 µg, intravenously). Alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), fibronectin, and E-cadherin expression were evaluated in MDCK cells and kidney tissues, and the extent of TIF in UUO kidneys was assessed by immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: TGF-ß1 treatment significantly increased α-SMA and fibronectin expression in MDCK cells and decreased that of E-cadherin, while co-treatment with rhEPO, MOCK-MPs, or hEPO-MPs markedly attenuated these changes. In addition, rhEPO and hEPO-MP treatment effectively decreased phosphorylated Smad2 and Smad3, as well as phosphorylated p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) expression, suggesting that rhEPO and rhEPO-MPs can inhibit TGF-ß1-induced EMT via both Smad and non-Smad pathways. rhEPO and hEPO-MP treatment also significantly attenuated the extent of renal TIF after 1 week of UUO compared to MOCK-MPs, with hEPO-MPs significantly reducing myofibroblast and F4/80+ macrophage infiltration as well as EMT marker expression in UUO renal tissues in a similar manner to rhEPO. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that hEPO-MPs modulate TGF-ß1-induced EMT in MDCK cells via the Smad2, Smad3, and p38 MAPK pathways and significantly attenuated renal TIF in UUO kidneys.

RESUMO

Quantum dot (QD)-based displays call for nondestructive, high-throughput, and high-resolution patterning techniques with micrometer precision. In particular, self-emissive QD-based displays demand fine patterns of conductive QD films with uniform thickness at the nanometer scale. To meet these requirements, we functionalized QDs with photopatternable and semiconducting poly(vinyltriphenylamine-random-azidostyrene) (PTPA-N3-SH) ligands in which hole-transporting triphenylamine and UV-crosslinkable azide (-N3) groups are integrated. The hybridized QD films undergo chemical crosslinking upon UV irradiation without loss in the luminescence efficiency, enabling micrometer-scale QD patterns (pitch size down to ∼10 µm) via direct photolithography. In addition, the conjugated moieties in the ligands allow the crosslinked QD films to be used in electrically driven light-emitting diodes (LED). As the ultimate achievement, a patterned QD-LED was prepared with a maximum luminance of 11 720 cd m-2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.25%. The present study offers a simple platform to fabricate conductive nanoparticle films with micrometer-scale patterns, and thus we anticipate that this system will expedite the realization of QD-based displays and will also be applicable to the manufacture of nanoparticles for other electronic devices.

RESUMO

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: We aimed to elucidate whether a balanced salt solution decreases the occurrence of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) after contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) as compared to 0.9% saline solution. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized clinical trial. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: The study was performed in 14 tertiary hospitals in South Korea. Patients with estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) < 45 or <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and additional risk factors (age ≥ 60 years or diabetes) who were undergoing scheduled CE-CT were included from December 2016 to December 2018. INTERVENTION: An open-label intervention was performed. The study group received a balanced salt solution and the control group received 0.9% saline solution as prophylactic fluids for CE-CT. OUTCOMES: The primary outcome was CI-AKI, defined by creatinine level elevation ≥ 0.5 mg/dL or 25% from baseline within 48 to 72 hours after CE-CT. Secondary outcomes included AKI defined based on the KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) guideline, eGFR changes, death, or requiring dialysis within 6 months after CE-CT. RESULTS: 493 patients received the study fluids. The control and study groups included 251 and 242 patients, respectively. The occurrence of CI-AKI in the study (10 [4.2%]) and control (17 [6.8%]) groups was not significantly different (P = 0.27). No significant difference was present for the secondary outcomes; AKI by the KDIGO definition (study: 19 [7.9%], control: 27 [10.8%]; P = 0.33), death/dialysis (study: 11 [4.7%], control: 9 [3.7%]; P = 0.74), and eGFR changes (study: 0.1 ± 0.2 mg/dL, control: 0.3 ± 2.8 mg/dL; P = 0.69). LIMITATIONS: This study failed to meet target enrollment. CONCLUSIONS: The risk for CI-AKI was similar after administration of a balanced salt solution and after use of 0.9% saline solution during CE-CT in higher-risk patients. FUNDING: This study was funded by CJ Healthcare (CS2015_0046). TRIAL REGISTRATION: Registered at ClinicalTrials.gov with study number NCT02799368.

RESUMO

In this study, two host materials, pCzBzbCz and pCzPybCz, are synthesized to achieve a high efficiency and long lifetime of blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes (TADF-OLEDs). The molecular design strategy involves the introduction of a pyridine group into the core structure of pCzPybCz as an electron-withdrawing unit, and an electron-donating phenyl group into the structure of pCzBzbCz. These host materials demonstrate good thermal stability and high triplet energy (T1 =3.07 eV for pCzBzbCz and 3.06 eV for pCzPybCz) for the fabrication of blue TADF-OLEDs. In particular, pCzPybCz-based OLED devices demonstrate an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.7 % and an operational lifetime of 24 h (LT90 , time to attain 90 % of initial luminance) at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m-2 . This superior lifetime could be explained by the C-N bond dissociation energy (BDE) in the host molecular structure. Furthermore, a mixed-host system using the electron-deficient 2,4-bis(dibenzo[b,d]furan-2-yl)-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine (DDBFT) is proposed to inhibit the formation of the anion state of our host materials. In short, the device operational lifetime is further improved by applying DDBFT. The carbazole-based asymmetric host molecule containing a pyridine core realizes a high-efficiency blue TADF-OLED showing a positive effect on the operating lifetime, and can provide useful strategies for designing new host materials.

RESUMO

To date, there are few studies that have evaluated the prognostic impact of changes in abdominal obesity or weight on long-term adverse kidney outcomes in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We investigated the effect of changes in waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body weight (BW) on chronic kidney disease (CKD) development, especially in non-obese NAFLD patients. We included 6,137 participants from a community-based prospective cohort with 12-year follow-up in Korea. NAFLD patients were categorized according to time-averaged percent changes in WHR and BW (≤-5%, >-5% to <5%, and ≥5%). Compared to non-obese controls, non-obese NAFLD was significantly associated with an increased risk of incident CKD (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.238, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.006-1.524). In 1,563 NAFLD patients, compared to patients with minimal changes in WHR (>-5% to <5%), patients with a decreased WHR (≤-5%) had a significantly attenuated risk of CKD development (HR = 0.300; 95% CI = 0.194-0.464). Furthermore, risk reduction from decreased WHR for developing CKD remained significant in non-obese NAFLD patients (HR = 0.290; 95% CI = 0.114-0.736). In conclusion, a decrease in WHR of more than 5% significantly reduced the risk of CKD development in NAFLD patients, even in those who were non-obese. Thus, serial monitoring of WHR may be prioritized in the management of NAFLD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the soluble form of suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) and soluble low-density lipoprotein receptor relative with 11 ligand-binding repeats (sLR11) have emerged as novel cardiovascular biomarkers in patients with cardiovascular disease, their prognostic value has not been fully investigated in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: We included 74 prevalent PD patients from a prospective cohort and measured serum sST2 and sLR11 concentrations by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The association of these biomarkers and all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) was evaluated. RESULTS: During a follow-up of 38.5 months, all-cause deaths and MACCEs were observed in 13 (17.6%) patients and 23 (31.3%) patients. Multivariable Cox analyses demonstrated that greater sST2 was independently associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality (≥75.8 ng/mL; hazard ratio [HR] = 5.551; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.360-22.660) and MACCEs (≥72.5 ng/mL; HR = 4.609; 95% CI = 1.608-13.208). Furthermore, sST2 showed additive predictive value for mortality to the base model including traditional risk factors (net reclassification index = 0.598, P = 0.04). sLR11 was not significantly associated with all-cause mortality or MACCE. CONCLUSIONS: sST2, but not sLR11, indicated a significant prognostic value for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in PD patients. Further research is needed to validate emerging biomarkers in these populations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The clinical features and incidence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are not well known in pediatric populations. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of pediatric BPPV and to estimate the frequency of pediatric BPPV in the general population. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 20 children (6-14 years old) diagnosed with BPPV between 2007 and 2017. The age/sex distribution of BPPV for all ages at our hospital and in the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Patient Sample (HIRA-NPS) database were compared. The annual incidence and proportion of children with BPPV were calculated. RESULTS: BPPV occurred 1.86 times more frequently in girls than in boys. Nine children (45%) had associated comorbidities, such as inner ear disorders and recent head trauma. The posterior and lateral semicircular canals were most commonly involved (n = 9 for each), and recurrence was observed in two patients (10%). Children younger than 15 years accounted for approximately 1% of all BPPV cases. The annual incidence of BPPV was 171.5/100,000 for all ages and 9.5/100,000 in the pediatric population. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that pediatric BPPV is a relatively uncommon cause of vertigo in children and that the rates of related illness and recurrence are high.

RESUMO

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome and is associated with cardiovascular outcomes. We investigated whether NAFLD was associated with coronary artery calcification (CAC) in participants without a previous history of cardiovascular disease and whether this association differed according to sex and obesity status after adjustment for other atherosclerosis risk factors, alcohol intake, and liver enzyme levels. Among 67,441 participants, data from 8,705 participants who underwent a fatty liver status and CAC assessment during routine health screening were analysed. CAC scores were calculated using computed tomography. NAFLD was diagnosed in patients with evidence of liver steatosis on ultrasonography. Obesity was defined as a body mass index of ≥25 kg/m2. Multivariate analysis showed a significant association between NAFLD and CAC in non-obese participants (odds ratio, 1.24 [95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.53]), whereas NAFLD and CAC were not associated in obese participants. Interaction analysis showed that the association between NAFLD and CAC was influenced by sex and obesity. Subgroup analysis revealed a significant association between NAFLD and CAC in non-obese male participants (odds ratio, 1.36 [1.07-1.75]), but not in female participants. Our study indicates that non-obese men with NAFLD are prone to CAC.
