RESUMO

Two new genera and four new species of siphonostomatoid copepods of the family Asterocheridae associated with sponges are described from the Korean East Sea (Sea of Japan). These new copepods are distinguishable from related genera and species by their diagnostic morphological characters as follows: Amalomyzon elongatum n. gen. n. sp. bears an elongated body, two-segmented rami of legs 2, a uniramous leg 3 with two-segmented exopod, and a rudimentary leg 4 represented by a lobe. Dokdocheres rotundus n. gen. n. sp. has an 18-segmented female antennule, a two-segmented endopod of antenna, and unusual setations of swimming legs, including three spines plus four setae on the third exopodal segment of legs 2-4. Asterocheres banderaae n. sp. has no inner coxal seta on leg 1 or 4, but has two strong, sexually dimorphic inner spines on the second endopodal segment of male leg 3. Scottocheres nesobius n. sp. bears elongate female caudal rami about six times longer than wide, a 17-segmented female antennule, and two spines plus four setae on the third exopodal segment of leg 1.

The ivory barnacle Amphibalanus eburneus is a marine crustacean, which presents near-cosmopolitan distribution due to extensive introduction and exhibits a wide spectrum of phenotypic variation. To elucidate geographical differentiation among populations through invasion, we investigated variation in genetic structure, shell morphology, and recruitment pattern for A. eburneus, from the southern Korean Peninsula where it has been established since the late 1980s. We selected samples from four populations in corresponding ecologically-relevant regions representing all surrounding South Korean waters. From these we amplified the mitochondrial genetic marker cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) from 57 individuals and performed a populational genetic analyses with 11 additional GenBank sequences to evaluate population structure. To examine morphological variation, we applied two-dimensional landmark-based geometric morphometrics to the scutum and tergum for 148 and 151 individuals, respectively. Furthermore, we estimated the density of year-old individuals in the field to compare recruitment responses among localities. We detected 33 haplotypes among the four locations belonging to three distinct clades based on moderate intraspecific pairwise genetic distance (≥3.5%). The haplotypes in these clades were not locality-specific in their distribution. In contrast, we did detect interpopulation variation in opercular shape and morphospace structure, and one population could be separated from the rest based on its distinct tergum morphotype alone. This morphologically distinct population was also differentiated by displaying the lowest mean recruitment density. Our results indicate that although there is no relationship between molecular variation in the COI gene and geographic regions in South Korea, association with locality for operculum morphology, and recruitment response suggest ecological adaptation by this barnacle in a new habitat.

Thirty-nine species of symbiotic copepods, comprising 24 species of poecilostome Cyclopoida and 15 species of Siphonostomatoida, are reported from Korean waters, which were collected using underwater light traps at 33 collection sites around the South Korean coast. Ten new species are described: Hemicyclopsrapax sp. nov. in the family Clausidiidae; Pontoclausiacochleata sp. nov. and P.pristina sp. nov. in the family Clausiidae; Heteranthessiusunisetatus sp. nov. in the family Lichomolgidae; Pusanomyicolasensitivus gen. nov., sp. nov. in the family Myicolidae; Polyankylisbogilensis sp. nov. in the family Polyankyliidae; Pseudanthessiuslinguifer sp. nov. in the Pseudanthessiidae; Eupolymniphilusfoliatus sp. nov. in the family Sabelliphilidae; and Acontiophorusestivalis sp. nov. and Thermocherespacificus sp. nov. in the family Asterocheridae. Supplementary descriptions or notes for other species are provided as appropriate.

Two new species of the hitherto monotypic family Intramolgidae are described, both are placed in the type genus Intramolgus Marchenkov Boxshall, 1995. Intramolgus heardensis sp. nov. was found in association with Polyzoa opuntia Lesson, 1830, and the host of I. atlantis sp. nov. was Styela chaini Monniot C. Monniot F., 1970. Eleven new species belonging to the family Lichomolgidae are reported. These include four new monotypic genera: Antarctomolgus gen. nov. accommodates A. molgulae gen. et sp. nov. from Molgula pedunculata (Herdman, 1881), Didemnomolgus gen. nov. accommodates D. crenulatus gen. et sp. nov. from Didemnum molle (Herdmann, 1886), Spheromolgus gen. nov. accommodates S. rarus gen. et sp. nov. from Diplosoma simile (Sluiter, 1909), and Alupa gen. nov. accommodates A. geminata gen. et sp. nov. from Leptoclinides madara Tokioka, 1953. The remaining new species are: Debruma deplanata sp. nov. from Ascidia ornata Monniot F. Monniot C., 2001, Lichomolgidium bipartitum sp. nov. from Pyura stolonifera (Heller, 1878), Lichomolgus papuensis sp. nov. from Rhopalaea circula Monniot F. Monniot C., 2001, L. brevicaudatus sp. nov. from an unidentified species of Polycarpa Heller, 1877, L. alatus sp. nov. from Synoicum castellatum Kott, 1992, L. lepidotus sp. nov. from Aplidium altarium (Sluiter, 1909), and Lobomolgus foveolatus sp. nov. from Didemnum molle (Herdmann, 1886). In addition, redescriptions are provided for Henicoxiphium redactum Illg Humes, 1971, Lichomolgidium sardum Kossmann, 1877, Lichomolgus canui Sars, 1917, L. forficula Thorell, 1860, and Zygomolgus dentatus Kim I.H., 2006.

The Monniot collection of copepods associated with ascidian hosts was built up over several decades of field collecting and taxonomic research on ascidians by Drs Claude Françoise Monniot (MNHN, Paris). This paper describes a total of 84 new species of copepods collected from ascidian hosts and five new genera are established. Prior to this study the family Ascidicolidae comprised two genera accommodating five valid species; here we add two new genera, Hamistyelicola gen. nov. and Bathycopola gen. nov., and eight new species in total. The family Buproridae comprised a single genus consisting of three species; here we add a new monotypic genus, Buprorides gen. nov. The family Botryllophilidae comprised 68 valid species in seven genera and here we add 45 new species; 13 of Botryllophilus Hesse, 1864, nine of Schizoproctus Aurivillius, 1885, three of Haplostomides Chatton Harant, 1924, 12 of Haplostoma Chatton Harant, 1924, seven of Haplostomella Chatton Harant, 1924 and a single new species of Haplosaccus Chatton Harant, 1924. The Enteropsidae comprised 42 species in five genera and here we add two new genera, Monnioticopa gen. nov. and Periboia gen. nov., plus a total of 30 new species; 15 of Enterocola van Beneden, 1860, two of Enterocolides Chatton Harant, 1922, five of Enteropsis C.W.S. Aurivillius, 1885, five of Monnioticopa gen. nov., two of Mychophilus Hesse, 1865, plus the type species of Periboia gen. nov. Generic diagnoses are provided for all genera represented in the collection. A further 13 known species are also reported and brief supplementary descriptive notes or full redescriptions are provided, as appropriate.

The family Archinotodelphyidae Lang, 1949 is reviewed. Only the type genus, Archinotodelphys Lang, 1949, is accepted as valid and the genus Pararchinotodelphys Lang, 1949 is recognized as its junior subjective synonym. The two species formerly placed in the latter genus are transferred to the type genus as Archinotodelphys gurneyi (Illg, 1955) comb. nov. and A. phallusiae (Hansen, 1923) comb. nov. The species A. polynesiensis Monniot, 1986 was regarded as highly variable by Monniot (1986) but here we separate out his material from the host Herdmania momus (Savigny, 1816) which we recognise as a distinct species, A. momus sp. nov. Another 14 new species are described for the first time, from material collected at numerous localities across the global ocean. The new species are: A. curtus sp. nov. from Styela sp., A. illgi sp. nov. from an unknown host, A. hexasetosus sp. nov. from Molgula platybranchia Monniot C., 1970, A. cinctus sp. nov. from Bathystyeloides enderbyanus (Michaelsen, 1904), A. antarcticus sp. nov. from Molgula pedunculata (Herdman, 1881), A. monnioti sp. nov. from Pareugyrioides galatheae Millar, 1959 (type host) and P. digitus Monniot C., 1997, A. bimerus sp. nov. from an unidentified species of the family Molgulidae, A. longiseta sp. nov. from Styela sigma Hartmeyer, 1912, A. reductus sp. nov. from Pyura gangelion (Savigny, 1816), A. elegans sp. nov. from Polycarpa argentata (Sluiter, 1898), A. rostralis sp. nov. from Polycarpa nigricans Heller, 1878, A. longicaudatus sp. nov. from Microcosmus longicloa Monniot C. RESUMO

Eight species of copepods belonging to the family Dirivultidae (Siphonostomatoida) are described from deep-water hydrothermal vent fields on the Central Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean. Aphotopontius limatulus Humes, 1987, previously known only from the East Pacific, is included. The other seven species are new, as follows: Aphotopontius kiost n. sp., A. muricatus n. sp., Benthoxynus constrictus n. sp., Stygiopontius spinifer n. sp., S. horridus n. sp., S. geminus n. sp., and S. quadripaxillifer n. sp. The copepodid I stage of S. horridus n. sp. is also described. This is the first record on copepods living on hydrothermal vent fields in the Indian Ocean.

Re-study of the type species of the genus Barathricola Humes, 1999 (Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Schminkepinellidae) described from the Pacific Ocean (Juan de Fuca Ridge), and study of the species Barathricolathermophilus sp. nov. from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent field on the Central Ridge in the Indian Ocean revealed a derived feature and widespread geographic distribution of this deep-sea genus of cyclopoids. The derived feature of Barathricola is the sexually dimorphic third endopodal segment of leg 3 possessing a small outer terminal spine together with spine-like outgrowths on this segment. The new species differs from Barathricolarimensis Humes, 1999 in not expressing sexual dimorphism in leg 5, having three spines and one seta on its exopod in both sexes (B.rimensis has three spines and one seta on the female exopod but three spines and two setae on the male exopod) and in having broader caudal rami which are 8.9 times longer than wide in the female (this ratio for B.rimensis is 11). An amended diagnosis of the genus Barathricola, a key and a table of morphological differences for all species of Schminkepinellidae are given.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to validate genes and genomic regions associated with carcass weight using a low-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Chip in Hanwoo cattle breed. METHODS: Commercial Hanwoo steers (n = 220) were genotyped with 20K GeneSeek genomic profiler BeadChip. After applying the quality control of criteria of a call rate ≥90% and minor allele frequency (MAF) ≥0.01, a total of 15,235 autosomal SNPs were left for genome-wide association (GWA) analysis. The GWA tests were performed using single-locus mixed linear model. Age at slaughter was fitted as fixed effect and sire included as a covariate. The level of genome-wide significance was set at 3.28×10-6 (0.05/15,235), corresponding to Bonferroni correction for 15,235 multiple independent tests. RESULTS: By employing EMMAX approach which is based on a mixed linear model and accounts for population stratification and relatedness, we identified 17 and 16 loci significantly (p<0.001) associated with carcass weight for the additive and dominant models, respectively. The second most significant (p = 0.000049) SNP (ARS-BFGL-NGS-28234) on bovine chromosome 4 (BTA4) at 21 Mb had an allele substitution effect of 43.45 kg. Some of the identified regions on BTA2, 6, 14, 22, and 24 were previously reported to be associated with quantitative trait loci for carcass weight in several beef cattle breeds. CONCLUSION: This is the first genome-wide association study using SNP chips on commercial Hanwoo steers, and some of the loci newly identified in this study may help to better DNA markers that determine increased beef production in commercial Hanwoo cattle. Further studies using a larger sample size will allow confirmation of the candidates identified in this study.

Two new coexisting species of crustacean copepods (Poecilostomatoida) belonging to the echinoid-specific genera Mecomerinx Humes, 1977 (Pseudanthessiidae) and Clavisodalis Humes, 1970 (Taeniacanthidae) found associated with the venomous flower urchin Toxopneustes pileolus (Lamarck) (Echinodermata: Echinoidea: Toxopneustidae) in the South China Sea (Vietnam) are described. The diagnostic features of Mecomerinx ohtsukai n. sp. are: (i) three setae and one aesthetasc on the first segment of antennules; (ii) relatively long caudal ramus; (iii) elongated terminal segment of the antenna; and (iv) two claws on the terminal segment of antenna slightly unequal in length. The taeniacanthid copepod Clavisodalis toxopneusti n. sp. is distinguished from all seven known congeners by having two-segmented endopod of the legs 2-4 and four setae on the distal endopodal segment of the leg 1. This is the first report on copepods associated with echinoids of the genus Toxopneustes Agassiz and the first finding of Mecomerinx as well as taeniacanthid copepods in the South China Sea associated with echinoids.

Copepods, small aquatic crustaceans, are the most abundant metazoan zooplankton and outnumber every other group of multicellular animals on earth. In spite of ecological and biological importance in aquatic environment, their morphological plasticity, originated from their various lifestyles and their incomparable capacity to adapt to a variety of environments, has made the identification of species challenging, even for expert taxonomists. Molecular approaches to species identification have allowed rapid detection, discrimination, and identification of cryptic or sibling species based on DNA sequence data. We examined sequence variation of a partial mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase I gene (COI) from 133 copepod individuals collected from the Korean Peninsula, in order to identify and discriminate 94 copepod species covering six copepod orders of Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, Monstrilloida, Poecilostomatoida and Siphonostomatoida. The results showed that there exists a clear gap with ca. 20 fold difference between the averages of within-specific sequence divergence (2.42%) and that of between-specific sequence divergence (42.79%) in COI, suggesting the plausible utility of this gene in delimitating copepod species. The results showed, with the COI barcoding data among 94 copepod species, that a copepod species could be distinguished from the others very clearly, only with four exceptions as followings: Mesocyclops dissimilis-Mesocyclops pehpeiensis (0.26% K2P distance in percent) and Oithona davisae-Oithona similis (1.1%) in Cyclopoida, Ostrincola japonica-Pseudomyicola spinosus (1.5%) in Poecilostomatoida, and Hatschekia japonica-Caligus quadratus (5.2%) in Siphonostomatoida. Thus, it strongly indicated that COI may be a useful tool in identifying various copepod species and make an initial progress toward the construction of a comprehensive DNA barcode database for copepods inhabiting the Korean Peninsula.

RESUMO

Conchyliurus dispar, a new species associated with the bivalve Barnea manilensis (Philippi), is described from the intertidal zone of the Yellow Sea. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: the absence of posterolateral processes on the male genital somite, the absence of a dorsal lobe on the female genital double-somite, and the presence of proximal spinules on the ventral surface of the anal somite. Based on a review of the literature on Conchyliurus, we also argue that the male of the new species and possibly all other known species of Conchyliurus consist of two distinct morphotypes, a large male and a small male.

Descriptions are given of 18 species of copepods that live in symbiotic association with polychaete worms in European Seas. Three new genera and six new species of the family Clausiidae Giesbrecht, 1895 are described: Boreoclausia rectan. gen. et n. sp. is described from Galathowenia fragilis (Nilson & Holthe, 1985), Boreoclausia holmesi n. gen. et n. sp.is described from Myriochele danielsseni Hansen, 1879, Sheaderia bifida n. gen. et n. sp. from Euclymene oerstedii (Claparède, 1863), Vivgottoia garwoodi n. gen. et n. sp., was found inside the tail fragment of a terebellid host (probably Phisidia aurea Southward, 1956), Rhodinicola tenuis n. sp. from an unknown host, and R. similis n. sp., from Rhodine gracilor (Tauber, 1879). In addition, four other clausiid species, Clausia lubbockii Claparède, 1863, Mesnilia cluthae (T. and A.Scott, 1896), Rhodinicola gibbosus Bresciani, 1964 and R. rugosum (Giesbrecht, 1895), are redescribed in detail on the basis of newly collected material. The previously-unknown hosts of C. lubbockii were found to be species of the spionid polychaete genus Dipolydora Verrill, 1881. Clausia uniseta Bocquet & Stock, 1960 were recognized as a junior subjective synonym of C. lubbockii, and Mesnilia martinensis Canu, 1898 was recognized as a junior subjective synonym of M. cluthae. The sole species of the monotypic family Anomoclausiidae Gotto, 1964, Anomoclausia indrehusae Gotto, 1964, is redescribed based on new material. The host of A. indrehusae, reported here for the first time, is the spionid Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata (Okuda, 1937). Four new species of the family Nereicolidae Claus, 1875 are described, three belonging to the genus Anomopsyllus Sars, 1921: Anomopsyllus bifurcus n. sp. from Notomastus latericeus M. Sars, 1851, A. geminus n. sp. from Ampharete lindstroemi Malmgren, 1867, and A. hamiltonae n. sp., from Mugga wahrbergi Eliasson, 1955. The fourth new species is Vectoriella gabesensis n. sp., both sexes of which are described from the paraonid Aricidea catherinae Laubier, 1967 collected in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Tunisia. Another nereicolid, Sigecheres brittae Bresciani, 1964 is redescribed based on new material collected from the type host Sige fusigera Malmgren, 1865. It is recognized as a junior subjective synonym of Nereicola concinna T. Scott, 1902 and the valid name of this taxon becomes Sigecheres concinna (T. Scott, 1902) new combination. A new species of the family Spiophanicolidae Ho, 1984, Spiophanicola atlanticus n. sp., is described based on European material. Previously European material of Spiophanicola Ho, 1984 has been reported as S. spinulosus Ho, 1984, but based on consistent differences between the Californian S. spinulosus and material from Norway and the British Isles, there is sufficient justification to establish a new species for the European material. Finally one new genus and species is described which cannot be placed, with confidence, in any existing family. This new parasite, Notomasticola frondosus n. gen. et n. sp., is based on material from two hosts, a spionid (Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata) and a capitellid (Notomastus latericeus). It is highly derived and may represent a terminal branch within an existing family. The cluster of families using polychaetes as hosts is in need of revision based on a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis.

Examination of washings of the ceriantharian Pachycerianthus maua (Carlgren) and its phoronid symbiont Phoronis australis Haswell in New Caledonian waters revealed two species of symbiotic copepods belonging to the family Sabelliphilidae (Cyclopoida). Phoronicola spinulatus Boxshall & Humes, 1988, the only other copepod known to be associated with a phoronid and originally described from Hong Kong, was found on both the lophophore of Phoronis australis and the tentacular crown of Pachycerianthus maua. Both sexes of Phoronicola spinulatus are redescribed based on the New Caledonian material and re-examination of the type-material revealed some observational errors in the original description. Myxomolgus hoi n. sp. was exclusively found on the ceriantharian host and appears most closely related to its only known Pacific congener, M. invulgus Kim, 2001, in lacking the strong spines on antennulary segments 1-2, the presence of closely set, fine teeth along the convex margin of the mandibular blade, and the absence of a proximal bulbous protrusion along the inner margin of leg 5 exopod. Differences between both species are found in the rostrum, antennule, antenna, maxillule, leg 4, caudal rami and body size. The relatively low number of specimens of P. spinulatus recovered from washings of the lophophores (and its presence on Pachycerianthus maua) suggests that its real host is a ceriantharian rather than a phoronid. It is conceivable that both Phoronicola spinulatus and M. hoi n. sp. live and feed on/inside the mucilaginous ceriantharian tube rather than on the lophophore or tentacular crown of their respective hosts.

The parasites and their hosts are: Bobkabata kabatabobbus Hogans and Benz, 1990 on Malacocottus zonurus Bean; Chondracanthus parvus n. sp. on Eurymen gyrinus Gilbert and Burke; Chondracanthus yabei n. sp. on Dasycottus setiger Bean and M. zonurus; Ch. yanezi Atria, 1980 on Psychrolutes phrictus Stein and Bond; Caligus similis n. sp. on Neophrynichthys latus (Hutton); Clavella adunca (Strøm, 1762) on M. zonurus; Neobrachiella amphipacifica Ho, 1982 on Ambophthalmos angustus (Nelson), Cottunculus sp., D. setiger, Ebinania brephocephala (Jordan and Starks), E. vermiculata Sakamoto, and P. phrictus; and Naobranchia occidentalis Wilson, 1915 on D. setiger and M. zonurus. Chondracanthus parvus is closest to Ch. deltoideus Fraser, 1920, but differs from it in having only one pair of small knobs on the head and carrying a pair of lateral processes on the second pediger. Chondracanthus yabei resembles Ch. yanezi Atria, 1980, but can be distinguished from it by the presence of three, low protrusions on the mid-dorsal surface of the trunk; besides, maxillule also shows difference. As the name indicates, C. similis resembles several species of Caligus that bear a short abdomen and a formula of I; IV on the exopod of leg 4. However, it can be separated from them by the combination of the following characters: a genital complex distinctly smaller than the cephalothoracic shield, a pair of relatively short caudal rami, a smooth dentiform process on maxillule, and a pair of truncate tines on sternal furca. Analysis of the occurrence of Chondracanthus on the psychrolutid fishes shows that the phylogeny of Chondracanthus is in congruence with that of the Psychrolutidae. It implies that parasitism of Chondracanthus occurred after the Dasycottus clade diverged off the main stock of the Psychrolutidae and the occurrence of Ch. yabei on D. setiger is resulted from a later colonization.

RESUMO

Five species of copepods (Siphonostomatoida: Lernanthropidae) parasitic on fishes of the Gulf of Thailand are reported. They are: Lernanthropus corniger Yamaguti, 1954 from Megalaspis cordyla (Linnaeus); L. latis Yamaguti, 1954 from Lates calcarifer (Bloch); L. nemipteri Jayasree & Pillai, 1976 from Scolopsis lineata Quoy et Gaimard; L. sillaginis Pillai, 1963 from Priacanthus tayenus Richardson; and Norion tayenus n. sp. from P. tayenus. Except for L. sillaginis, the remaining four species are new to Thailand. Lernanthropus priacanthi Kirtisinghe, 1956 is transferred to Norion as N. priacanthi (Kirtisinghe, 1956) n. comb.

RESUMO

Paeonocanthus antarcticensis (Hewitt, 1965) is redescribed based on four specimens recovered from a deep-sea smelt, Bathylagus antarcticus Günther, collected in the Antarctic Ocean (65 degrees S, 139 degrees 59.6'E). Studies on the morphological variations of these four specimens plus comparison with the three documented specimens yielded that the sphyriid reported as P. antarcticensis from the goiter blacksmelt, Bathylagus euryops Goode & Bean, taken in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean is a different species. It is renamed Paeonocanthus hogansi n. sp.
