RESUMO

Front-of-package (FOP) is one of the most direct communication channels connecting manufacturers and consumers, as it displays crucial information such as certification, nutrition, and health. Traditional methods for obtaining information from FOPs often involved manual collection and analysis. To overcome these labor-intensive characteristics, new methods using two artificial intelligence (AI) approaches were applied for information monitoring of FOPs. In order to provide practical implementations, a case study was conducted on infant food products. First, FOP images were collected from Amazon.com. Then, from the FOP images, 1) the certification usage status of the infant food group was obtained by recognizing the certification marks using object detection. Moreover, 2) the nutrition and health-related texts written on the images were automatically extracted based on optical character recognition (OCR), and the associations between health-related texts were identified by network analysis. The model attained a 94.9% accuracy in identifying certification marks, unveiling prevalent certifications like Kosher. Frequency and network analysis revealed common nutrients and health associations, providing valuable insights into consumer perception. These methods enable fast and efficient monitoring capabilities, which can significantly benefit various food industries. Moreover, the AI-based approaches used in the study are believed to offer insights for related industries regarding the swift transformations in product information status.

Background: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monograph conducted a systematic review of the relationship between asbestos and ovarian cancer. However, there may have been information bias due to the undue weight given to few articles. To address this limitation, the present study performed a meta-analysis integrating studies published both before and after the 2012 IARC Monograph on Asbestos, with the aim of investigating the association between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer. Methods: A comprehensive search of major journal databases was conducted to identify studies examining the relationship between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer, including those featured in the 2012 IARC Monograph on Asbestos. A meta-analysis on asbestos exposure and cancer risk was performed. Results: The meta-analysis of studies published after the 2012 IARC Monograph on Asbestos found a summary Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) of 2.04 (95% CI: 1.03-4.05; p = 0.0123; 5 studies), with a significant degree of heterogeneity among the studies (I2 = 72.99%). The combined analysis of 15 studies before and after the 2012 IARC Monograph showed an overall summary SMR of 1.72 (95% CI: 1.43-2.06; p = 0.0349; 15 studies), with a moderate degree of heterogeneity (I2 = 42.99%). Conclusion: This meta-analysis provides evidence of a significant association between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer mortality. While the possibility of misdiagnosis in earlier studies cannot be completely ruled out, recent findings suggest a robust correlation between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer. This highlights the importance of sustained efforts to minimize asbestos exposure and protect public health.

(1) Background: Pressure ulcers (PUs) substantially impact the quality of life of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and require prompt intervention. This study used machine learning (ML) techniques to develop advanced predictive models for the occurrence of PUs in patients with SCI. (2) Methods: By analyzing the medical records of 539 patients with SCI, we observed a 35% incidence of PUs during hospitalization. Our analysis included 139 variables, including baseline characteristics, neurological status (International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury [ISNCSCI]), functional ability (Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index [K-MBI] and Functional Independence Measure [FIM]), and laboratory data. We used a variety of ML methods-a graph neural network (GNN), a deep neural network (DNN), a linear support vector machine (SVM_linear), a support vector machine with radial basis function kernel (SVM_RBF), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), a random forest (RF), and logistic regression (LR)-focusing on an integrative analysis of laboratory, neurological, and functional data. (3) Results: The SVM_linear algorithm using these composite data showed superior predictive ability (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.904, accuracy = 0.944), as demonstrated by a 5-fold cross-validation. The critical discriminators of PU development were identified based on limb functional status and laboratory markers of inflammation. External validation highlighted the challenges of model generalization and provided a direction for future research. (4) Conclusions: Our study highlights the importance of a comprehensive, multidimensional data approach for the effective prediction of PUs in patients with SCI, especially in the acute and subacute phases. The proposed ML models show potential for the early detection and prevention of PUs, thus contributing substantially to improving patient care in clinical settings.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of obesity treatment with behavioral therapy (BT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions compared with multiple comparators and find effective techniques or combinations of techniques in BT and CBT interventions for weight loss. We systematically searched electronic databases and selected randomized controlled trials using CBT or BT intervention for obesity treatment in overweight adults or adults with obesity without psychological symptoms. Both pairwise meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed to comprehensively evaluate the comparative effects between interventions. We classified the techniques used in BT and CBT interventions and compared the treatment effects between techniques. Compared with no treatment as a common comparator, CBT was most effective for weight loss, followed by BT, usual care (UC), and minimal care (MC). CBT was a more effective intervention than BT, but the effect of CBT compared to BT was not remarkable in network estimates. The most used BT techniques were feedback and monitoring, and the most used CBT technique was cognitive restructuring. Our results indicated that CBT and BT are effective interventions for weight loss, and that successful weight loss requires more aggressive interventions such as BT or CBT than MC and UC.

Understanding the mechanism underlying the formation of quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals is crucial for controlling their synthesis for a wide array of applications. However, most studies of 2D CdSe nanocrystals have relied predominantly on ex situ analyses, obscuring key intermediate stages and raising fundamental questions regarding their lateral shapes. Herein, the formation pathways of two distinct quantum-sized 2D wurtzite-CdSe nanocrystals - nanoribbons and nanosheets - by employing a comprehensive approach, combining in situ small-angle X-ray scattering techniques with various ex situ characterization methods is studied. Although both nanostructures share the same thickness of ≈1.4 nm, they display contrasting lateral dimensions. The findings reveal the pivotal role of Se precursor reactivity in determining two distinct synthesis pathways. Specifically, highly reactive precursors promote the formation of the nanocluster-lamellar assemblies, leading to the synthesis of 2D nanoribbons with elongated shapes. In contrast, mild precursors produce nanosheets from a tiny seed of 2D nuclei, and the lateral growth is regulated by chloride ions, rather than relying on nanocluster-lamellar assemblies or Cd(halide)2 -alkylamine templates, resulting in 2D nanocrystals with relatively shorter lengths. These findings significantly advance the understanding of the growth mechanism governing quantum-sized 2D semiconductor nanocrystals and offer valuable guidelines for their rational synthesis.

Background: This study aimed to examine the impact of chronotype on depressive symptoms and explore the mediating effects of sleep quality, pre-sleep cognitive arousal, and social jetlag in a sample of wage earners. Methods: A total of 3,917 waged workers were surveyed online in July 2022. Logistic regression and mediation analysis were used to assess the relationship between chronotype (morningness, intermediate, and eveningness) and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire ≥ 5), and the mediating effects of Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale (PSAS). All analyses were adjusted for age, education level, income level, marital status, coffee consumption, alcohol consumption, physical activity, occupation, employment status, and working hours to calculate odds ratios (ORs). Results: The chronotypes of all the participants were divided into morningness (4.7%), intermediate (93.5%), and eveningness (1.8%). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed an increased risk of depression in the eveningness chronotype (OR: 2.96; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51, 5.86). Regarding the mediation analysis, ISI mediated 28.44% (95% CI: 16.39-40.5), PSQI for 31.25% (95% CI: 19.36, 43.15), and PSAS-Cognitive Score (PSAS-C) for 23.58% (95% CI: 10.66, 36.50) of the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms. However, social jetlag did not significantly mediate this relationship. (percentage mediated = 0.75%, 95% CI: -3.88, 5.39). Conclusions: Evening chronotypes exhibit an increased risk of depressive symptoms, which ISI, PSQI, and PSAS-C partially mediated. This suggests that interventions to improve sleep quality and maintain adequate sleep habits may effectively prevent and treat depression in employees with an eveningness chronotype.

Twigs of Morus alba have been used in traditional medicine to treat muscle-related symptoms such as aches, numbness, and stiffness. Despite its clinical use in traditional medicine, its active compounds and mode of action have not yet been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to isolate the compounds from the twigs of M. alba and deduce active compounds, key gene targets, and mechanism of action against sarcopenia using network pharmacology analysis. Using various isolation techniques and spectroscopic methods, 43 phytochemicals, including 3 new flavonoids, were isolated and performed network pharmacology analysis. According to the computational-assistant analysis, 28 compounds, 9 genes, and the PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway were deduced as expected active compounds (EAC), key targets, and the main signaling pathway. To verify the predicted results, the cell proliferation activities of the EAC were evaluated. Especially, moracin E and M significantly increased by 130% (p < 0.001) and 57% (p < 0.05), respectively, which have more than 2- and 1.5-fold stronger effects compared to the control. Furthermore, both increased the expression level of proteins involved in the PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway and myogenic proteins, including myogenin and MyoD. This study demonstrated that moracin E and M exhibit cell proliferative effects on skeletal muscle cells through the PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway.

Prokaryotes play an important role in marine nitrogen and methane cycles. However, their community changes and metabolic modifications to the concurrent impact of ocean warming (OW), acidification (OA), deoxygenation (OD), and anthropogenic­nitrogen-deposition (AND) from the surface to the deep ocean remains unknown. We examined here the amplicon sequencing approach across the surface (0-200 m; SL), intermediate (200-1000 m; IL), and deep layers (1000-2200 m; DL), and characterized the simultaneous impacts of OW, OA, OD, and AND on the Western North Pacific Ocean prokaryotic changes and their functional pattern in nitrogen and methane cycles. Results showed that SL possesses higher ammonium oxidation community/metabolic composition assumably the reason for excess nitrogen input from AND and modification of their kinetic properties to OW adaptation. Expanding OD at IL showed hypoxic conditions in the oxygen minimum layer, inducing higher microbial respiration that elevates the dimerization of nitrification genes for higher nitrous oxide production. The aerobic methane-oxidation composition was dominant in SL presumably the reason for adjustment in prokaryotic optimal temperature to OW, while anaerobic oxidation composition was dominant at IL due to the evolutionary changes coupling with higher nitrification. Our findings refocus on climate-change impacts on the open ocean ecosystem from the surface to the deep-environment integrating climate-drivers as key factors for higher nitrous-oxide and methane emissions.

Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal skin bacterium and a causative agent of infectious diseases. Biofilm formation in S. aureus is a mechanism that facilitates the emergence of resistant strains. This study proposes a mechanism for the regulation of biofilm formation in S. aureus through strain-specific physiological changes induced by the plant steroid diosgenin. A comparison of diosgenin-induced changes in the expression of regulatory genes associated with physiological changes revealed the intracellular regulatory mechanisms involved in biofilm formation. Diosgenin reduced biofilm formation in S. aureus ATCC 6538 and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) CCARM 3090 by 39% and 61%, respectively. Conversely, it increased biofilm formation in S. aureus ATCC 29213 and MRSA CCARM 3820 by 186% and 582%, respectively. Cell surface hydrophobicity and extracellular protein and carbohydrate contents changed in a strain-specific manner in response to biofilm formation. An assessment of the changes in gene expression associated with biofilm formation revealed that diosgenin treatment decreased the expression of icaA and spa and increased the expression of RNAIII, agrA, sarA, and sigB in S. aureus ATCC 6538 and MRSA CCARM 3090; however, contrasting gene expression changes were noted in S. aureus ATCC 29213 and MRSA CCARM 3820. These results suggest that a regulatory mechanism of biofilm formation is that activated sigB expression sequentially increases the expression of sarA, agrA, and RNAIII. This increased RNAIII expression decreases the expression of spa, a surface-associated adhesion factor. An additional regulatory mechanism of biofilm formation is that activated sigB expression decreases the expression of an unknown regulator that increases the expression of icaA. This in turn decreases the expression of icaA, which decreases the synthesis of polysaccharide intercellular adhesins and ultimately inhibits biofilm formation. By assessing strain-specific contrasting regulatory signals induced by diosgenin in S. aureus without gene mutation, this study elucidated the signal transduction mechanisms that regulate biofilm formation based on physiological and gene expression changes.

For primary prevention, it is important for public health and clinical medicine to identify and characterize modifiable risk factors of stroke. In existing literature, the impact of occupational variables on ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke has been extensively studied. This review summarizes the available data on the significance of occupational variables in stroke. The results of this review suggest that there is sufficient evidence for the relationship between increased risk of stroke and job stress, working in extreme temperatures, long working hours, and/or shift work. The association between long working hours and occupational exposure to noise and chemicals remains inconclusive although several studies have reported this finding. This review will act as a step toward future research and provide information that may serve as a baseline for developing targeted interventions to prevent stroke in the working population.

BACKGROUND: Iodinated contrast media (ICM) are a common cause of drug-induced immediate hypersensitivity reaction (IHR). Repeated use of ICM is often necessary; therefore, a standardized protocol to prevent recurrence of IHR is required. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to propose an intradermal skin test (IDT)-guided strategy for previous reactors to prevent recurrence of IHR. METHODS: We conducted a prospective multicenter study from May 2018 to December 2020 and recruited patients who had experienced IHR to ICM. Once enrolled, the participants underwent IDT with a causative ICM. The alternatives for reexposure were selected using the following protocol: (1) if the IDT with the culprit ICM was positive, further skin tests with other available ICM were conducted to choose IDT-negative agents as alternatives, and (2) if the IDT with the culprit ICM was negative, a randomly changed ICM was used without additional skin tests. The recurrence and severity of hypersensitivity were assessed in subsequent computed tomography examinations. Premedication was administered according to the severity of the index event in all cases. RESULTS: A total of 496 participants were enrolled, and 299 were reexposed to ICM. Among 269 participants who followed the protocol, 228 (84.8%) completed computed tomography examinations without adverse reactions, and IHR recurred in 16 of 30 participants (53.3%) who did not follow the protocol (P < .001). In addition, application of the protocol reduced the severity of IHR in recurred cases (P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Our IDT-guided strategy not only reduced recurrence of IHR to ICM but also mitigated the severity in recurred cases. This provides evidence for recommending an IDT to diagnose ICM allergy and find safe alternatives.

Objectives: Polystyrene is a plastic that leads to environmental pollution. In particular, expanded polystyrene is very light and takes up much space, causing additional environmental problems. The aim of this study was to isolate new symbiotic bacteria which degraded polystyrene from mealworms. Methods: The population of polystyrene degrading bacteria was increased by enrichment culture of intestinal bacteria from mealworms with polystyrene as a sole carbon source. The degradation activity of isolated bacteria was evaluated by morphological change of micro-polystyrene particles and the surface change of polystyrene films. Results: Eight isolated species (Acinetobacter septicus, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Klebsiella grimontii, Pseudomonas multiresinivorans, Pseudomonas nitroreducens, Pseudomonas plecoglossicida, Serratia marcescens, and Yokenella regensburgei) were identified that degrade polystyrene. Conclusion: Bacterial identification shows that a broad spectrum of bacteria decomposing polystyrene coexists in the intestinal tract of mealworms.

Various poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres loaded with the ginger fraction were fabricated by controlling the electrospray parameters and their biocompatibility and antibacterial activity were identified in this study. The morphology of the microspheres was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The core-shell structures of the microparticles and the presence of ginger fraction in the microspheres were confirmed by fluorescence analysis using a confocal laser scanning microscopy system. In addition, the biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of PLGA microspheres loaded with ginger fraction were evaluated through a cytotoxicity test using osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells and an antibacterial test using Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis, respectively. The optimum PLGA microspheres loaded with ginger fraction were fabricated under electrospray operational conditions with 3% PLGA concentration in solution, an applied voltage of 15.5 kV, a flow rate of 15 µL/min in the shell nozzle, and 3 µL/min in the core nozzle. The effectual antibacterial effect and enhanced biocompatibility were identified when a 3% ginger fraction in PLGA microspheres was loaded.

BACKGROUND: The lateral pharyngeal wall (LPW) is a critical anatomic structure in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Resolving the retropalatal circumferential (RC) narrowing caused by combination of both LPW collapse and antero-posterior (AP) narrowing holds promise for surgical treatment of OSA. We sought to determine the clinical characteristics and distinctive alterations in sleep parameters of patients with OSA who have RC narrowing and LPW collapse. METHODS: Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), polysomnography findings, and sleep questionnaires were reviewed retrospectively in patients with OSA. RESULTS: Of the 106 OSA patients examined, 48% showed RC narrowing and 44% showed AP narrowing at the oropharynx level during sleep while 8% of the patients showed only LPW collapse. Patients with RC narrowing with LPW collapse exhibited a higher BMI than those with AP narrowing only. In addition, patients with RC narrowing showed more aggravated sleep parameters including apneic events than patients with AP narrowing alone. The degree of RC narrowing correlated significantly with the severity of OSA as shown by a higher apnea index and lower oxygen desaturations. CONCLUSIONS: Our clinical findings suggest that the presence of RC narrowing with LPW collapse in OSA is closely related to increased apneic and oxygen desaturation events. RC narrowing with LPW collapse may be targets for surgical correction in patients with OSA to improve therapeutic outcomes.

This study aimed to evaluate the alteration of PAP compliance after nasal surgery and to determine the optimal indications of nasal surgery in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects. Among OSA subjects using PAP devices, 29 subjects who underwent septoturbinoplasty due to nasal obstruction were included and their pre- and postoperative medical and PAP records were reviewed retrospectively. Postoperative autoPAP usage data was further assessed by grouping the compliance (the percentage of days with usage ≥ 4 h) data (group 1: the good compliance group; group 2: the poor compliance group). The data showed that 56% of subjects in group 1 complained of nasal obstruction as the only barrier to using a PAP device and about 89% reported experiencing the efficacy of PAP usage. Both the mean and peak average PAP pressures were significantly reduced in group 1 following nasal surgery. Group 2 had multiple subjective problems that interfered with wearing a PAP device and reported a lack of experiencing the efficacy of PAP usage. Preoperative nasal cavity volume values were smaller and absolute blood eosinophil counts were significantly lower in group 1. The current data demonstrate that nasal surgery might increase the compliance of PAP device wear in OSA subjects who complained of only nasal obstruction as a barrier to wearing PAP and who had small nasal cavity volumes combined with allergic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. Currently, no FDA-approved drugs are available for the treatment of VaD. Artemisia annua Linné (AA) is known to have antioxidant properties, but its effects and mechanisms of action on cognitive impairment are still unknown. PURPOSE: In this study, the improvement in cognitive impairment by AA in terms of protection against oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and preservation of the integrity of the neurovascular unit (NVU) was assessed in an animal model of VaD with bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO). METHODS: Eight-week-old male Wistar rats were allowed to adapt for four weeks, and BCCAO was induced at 12 weeks of age. The rats were randomly assigned into four groups, with seven rats in each group: sham group without BCCAO, VaD group that received oral administration of distilled water after BCCAO surgery, and two AA groups that received oral administration of 150 mg/kg or 750 mg/kg AA after BCCAO surgery for 8 weeks. Nine weeks after BCCAO surgery, the cognitive function of the rats was evaluated and accumulated oxidative stress was assessed by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and western blotting. Damage to the components of the NVU was evaluated, and sirtuin (Sirt) 1 and 2 expression and nuclear factor-erythrocyte 2-associated factor 2 (Nrf2)/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein1 (Keap1) activation were investigated to assess the reduction in cell signaling and antioxidant pathways. RESULTS: BCCAO-induced cerebral perfusion decreased memory function and induced neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. But AA treatment mitigated cognitive impairment and reduced neuroinflammation and oxidative stress caused by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. AA extracts activated the Nrf2/Keap1/activating antioxidant response elements pathway and maintained Sirt 1 and 2, subsequently leading to the maintenance of neurons, improved construct of microvessels, increased platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta, and platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 associated with the blood-brain barrier integrity. CONCLUSION: AA is effective in alleviating BCCAO-induced cognitive decline and its administration may be a useful therapeutic approach for VaD.

The fundamental basis for the human function is provided by skeletal muscle. Advancing age causes selective fiber atrophy, motor unit loss, and hybrid fiber formation resulting in hampered mass and strength, thus referred to as sarcopenia. Influence on the loss of independence of aged adults, contribute toward inclined healthcare costs conveys the injurious impact. The current understating of age-related skeletal muscle changes are addressed in this review, and further discusses mechanisms regulating protein turnover, although they do not completely define the process yet. Moreover, the reduced capacity of muscle regeneration due to impairment of satellite cell activation and proliferation with neuronal, immunological, hormonal factors were brought into the light of attention. Nevertheless, complete understating of sarcopenia requires disentangling it from disuse and disease. Nutritional intervention is considered a potentially preventable factor contributing to sarcopenia. Seafood is a crucial player in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, where it consists of macro and micronutrients. Hence, the review shed light on seafood as a nutritional intrusion in the treatment and prevention of sarcopenia. Understanding multiple factors will provide therapeutic targets in the prevention, treatment, and overcoming adverse effects of sarcopenia.

The gingerols and shogaols derived from ginger have excellent antibacterial properties against oral bacteria. However, some researchers have noted their dose-dependent potential toxicity. The aim of this study was to enhance the biofunctionality and biocompatibility of the application of ginger to dental titanium screws. To increase the amount of coating of the n-hexane-fractionated ginger on the titanium surface and to control its release, ginger was loaded in different concentrations in a photo-crosslinkable GelMA hydrogel. To improve coating stability of the ginger hydrogel (GH), the wettability of the surface was modified by pre-calcification (TNC), then GH was applied on the surface. As a result, the ginger fraction, with a high content of phenolic compounds, was effective in the inhibition of the growth of S. mutans and P. gingivalis. The GH slowly released the main compounds of ginger and showed excellent antibacterial effects with the concentration. Although bone regeneration was slightly reduced with the ginger-loading concentration due to the increased contents of polyphenolic compounds, it was strongly supplemented through the promotion of osteosis formation by the hydrogel and TNC coating. Finally, we proved the biosafety and superior biofunctionalities the GH-TNC coating on a Ti implant. However, it is recommended to use an appropriate concentration, because an excessive concentration of ginger may affect the improved biocompatibility in clinical applications.

High-definition red/green/blue (RGB) pixels and deformable form factors are essential for the next-generation advanced displays. Here, we present ultrahigh-resolution full-color perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC) patterning for ultrathin wearable displays. Double-layer transfer printing of the PeNC and organic charge transport layers is developed, which prevents internal cracking of the PeNC film during the transfer printing process. This results in RGB pixelated PeNC patterns of 2550 pixels per inch (PPI) and monochromic patterns of 33,000 line pairs per inch with 100% transfer yield. The perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with transfer-printed active layers exhibit outstanding electroluminescence characteristics with remarkable external quantum efficiencies (15.3, 14.8, and 2.5% for red, green, and blue, respectively), which are high compared to the printed PeLEDs reported to date. Furthermore, double-layer transfer printing enables the fabrication of ultrathin multicolor PeLEDs that can operate on curvilinear surfaces, including human skin, under various mechanical deformations. These results highlight that PeLEDs are promising for high-definition full-color wearable displays.
