RESUMO

Interface engineering is an effective approach to tune the magnetic properties of van der Waals (vdW) magnets and their heterostructures. The prerequisites for the practical utilization of vdW magnets and heterostructures are a quantitative analysis of their magnetic anisotropy and the ability to modulate their interfacial properties, which have been challenging to achieve with conventional methods. Here we characterize the magnetic anisotropy of Fe3GeTe2 layers by employing the magnetometric technique based on anomalous Hall measurements and confirm its intrinsic nature. In addition, on the basis of the thickness dependences of the anisotropy field, we identify the interfacial and bulk contributions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the interfacial anisotropy in Fe3GeTe2-based heterostructures is locally controlled by adjacent layers, leading to the realization of multiple magnetic behaviors in a single channel. This work proposes that the magnetometric technique is a useful platform for investigating the intrinsic properties of vdW magnets and that functional devices can be realized by local interface engineering.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Citrulline is one of the non-essential amino acids that is thought to improve exercise performance and reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of citrulline supplements on the post-exercise rating of perceived exertion (RPE), muscle soreness, and blood lactate levels. METHODS: A random effects model was used to calculate the effect sizes due to the high variability in the study design and study populations of the articles included. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov was performed. Eligibility for study inclusion was limited to studies that were randomized controlled trials involving healthy individuals and that investigated the acute effect of citrulline supplements on RPE, muscle soreness, and blood lactate levels. The supplementation time frame was limited to 2 h before exercise. The types and number of participants, types of exercise tests performed, supplementation protocols for L-citrulline or citrulline malate, and primary (RPE and muscle soreness) and secondary (blood lactate level) study outcomes were extracted from the identified studies. RESULTS: The analysis included 13 eligible articles including a total of 206 participants. The most frequent dosage used in the studies was 8 g of citrulline malate. Citrulline supplementation significantly reduced RPE (n = 7, p = 0.03) and muscle soreness 24-h and 48-h after post-exercise (n = 7, p = 0.04; n = 6, p = 0.25, respectively). However, citrulline supplementation did not significantly reduce muscle soreness 72-h post-exercise (n = 4, p = 0.62) or lower blood lactate levels (n = 8, p = 0.17). CONCLUSION: Citrulline supplements significantly reduced post-exercise RPE and muscle soreness without affecting blood lactate levels.

RESUMO

Syphilis is a chronic systemic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Gastric involvement and nephrotic syndrome are uncommon but well documented complications of syphilis, but the co-occurrence of these two complications in the same patient is extremely rare. Thus, because of their nonspecific presentation, suspicion of gastric syphilis (GS) and nephrotic syndrome is essential for diagnosis. Patients should be investigated thoroughly and a diagnosis made based on clinical, endoscopic, and histological findings, in order to initiate appropriate therapy. We report of a 34-year-old male patient with a history of epigastric pain and a diagnosis of GS and syphilis-associated membranous glomerulonephritis confirmed by gastroscopy and kidney biopsy, who was treated successfully with penicillin G benzathine. This case report provides information on the typical features of GS that should help raise awareness of this rare disease entity among clinicians, resulting in earlier diagnosis and administration of appropriate therapy.

RESUMO

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a very rare mature B-cell neoplasm and its simultaneous occurrence with chronic myeloid leukemia has been reported in only three cases. The pathogenesis and relationship of the two diseases are not clear. Here we report a case of HCL expressing a BCR/ABL1 clone, which showed molecular remission of the fusion clones and achieved partial remission over nine months of cladribine therapy. After a thorough analysis of previous studies and the results of this patient, we speculate that a subclone evolved to have an additional genetic BCR/ABL1 rearrangement. We also review all published literature on HCL with BCR/ABL1 rearrangement and discuss the pathophysiology of these unusual cases.

RESUMO

The sex pheromone of Synanthedon bicingulata (Staudinger), a major pest of Prunus species in many regions of northeast Asia, was identified. Two major components from the pheromone gland extracts of female moths are (E,Z)-3,13-octadecadienyl acetate (E3,Z13-18:OAc) and (Z,Z)-3,13-octadecadienyl acetate (Z3,Z13-18:OAc), and the average ratio of these components is about 4:6, respectively. In addition to the major components, four minor components, (Z)-13-octadecenyl acetate (Z13-18:OAc), (E,Z)-2,13-octadecadienyl acetate (E2,Z13-18:OAc), (E,Z)-3,13-octadecadien-1-ol (E3,Z13-18:OH), and (Z,Z)-3,13-octadecadien-1-ol (Z3,Z13-18:OH) also were identified from pheromone gland extracts. Field tests showed that E3,Z13-18:OAc and Z3,Z13-18:OAc are essential for attraction of male S. bicingulata moths, and males are optimally attracted to the blend ratio found in pheromone gland extracts of conspecific females. Addition of the minor glandular components (Z13-18:OAc, E2,Z13-18:OAc, E3,Z13-18:OH, and Z3,Z13-18:OH) did not affect captures of males to the primary binary blend. Thus, the blend of E3,Z13-18:OAc and Z3,Z13-18:OAc at the natural ratio can be used for monitoring populations of this species.

RESUMO

Human embryonic stem (hES) cells have unique features including unlimited growth capacity, expression of specific markers, normal karyotypes and an ability to differentiate. Many investigators have tried to use hES cells for cell-based therapy, but there is little information about the properties of available hES cell lines. We compared the characteristics of three hES cell lines. The expression of SSEA-1, -3, -4, and APase, was examined by immunocytochemistry, and Oct-4 expression was analyzed by RT-PCR. Differentiation of the hES cells in vitro and in vivo led to the formation of embryoid bodies (EBs) or teratomas. We examined the expression of tissue-specific markers in the differentiated cells by semiquantitative RT-PCR, and the ability of each hES cell line to proliferate was measured by flow cytometry of DNA content and ELISA. The three hES cell lines were similar in morphology, marker expression, and teratoma formation. However there were significant differences (P < 0.05) between the differentiated cells formed by the different cell lines in levels of expression of tissue-specific markers such as renin, kallikrein, Glut-2, beta- and delta-globin, albumin, and alpha1-antitrypsin (alpha1-AT). The hES cell lines also differed in proliferative activity. Our observations should be useful in basic and clinical hES cell research.
