RESUMO

This mini review describes the current status and challenges regarding institutionalisation of wastewater surveillance systems against COVID-19. Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater has been proposed to be a potential tool to understand the actual prevalence of COVID-19 in the community, and it could be an effective approach to monitor the trend during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, challenges to institutionalise wastewater surveillance systems are still abundant and unfolding at a rapid rate given that the international understanding regarding the scientific knowledge and socio-political impacts of COVID-19 are in the developing stages. To better understand the existing challenges and bottlenecks, a comparative study between Japan, Viet Nam, and Indonesia was carried out in the present study. Through gaining a better understanding of common issues as well as issues specific to each country, we hope to contribute to building a robust multistakeholder system to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater as an effective disease surveillance system for COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Post-operative acute kidney injury is a serious complication and identifying modifiable factors could assist in peri-operative management. This study aimed to identify the pre-operative and intra-operative factors associated with the incidence of post-operative acute kidney injury and acute deterioration of kidney function after total hip arthroplasty.Materials and methods: This single-center, retrospective, observational study included 203 patients who underwent unilateral primary total hip arthroplasty. Acute kidney injury was determined using biochemical markers according to the risk, injury, failure, loss of kidney function, and end-stage kidney disease (RIFLE) criteria. Acute deterioration of kidney function was defined as the reduction of estimated glomerular filtration rate by ≥10ml/min/1.73m2. RESULTS: Prior to total hip arthroplasty, 20% of all patients met the chronic renal dysfunction criterion of glomerular filtration rates <60ml/min/1.73m2 (glomerular filtration rate categories G3a-G5). Incidence rates of acute kidney injury and acute deterioration of kidney function after total hip arthroplasty were 0.49% and 6.9%, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis showed that diabetes mellitus and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs before total hip arthroplasty were significant risk factors for acute deterioration of kidney function. Advanced age, preoperative renal dysfunction, antihypertensive, diuretics, or statin use, operation time, total blood loss, type of anesthetic, and body mass index were not significant risk factors. CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were controllable risks, and multidisciplinary approaches are a reasonable means of minimising peri-operative acute kidney injury or acute deterioration of kidney function.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Because it can be difficult to discriminate between a Rathke cleft cyst and cystic craniopharyngioma by conventional MR imaging alone, we investigated whether contrast-enhanced 3D T2-FLAIR MR imaging at 3T helps to distinguish a Rathke cleft cyst from a cystic craniopharyngioma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated pre- and postcontrast T1-weighted and 3D T2-FLAIR images of 17 patients with pathologically confirmed Rathke cleft cyst (n = 10) or cystic craniopharyngioma (n = 7). All underwent 3T MR imaging studies before surgery. Two neuroradiologists independently recorded the enhancement grade of the lesion wall as grade 2 (most of the wall enhanced), grade 1 (some of the wall enhanced), and grade 0 (none of the wall enhanced). One neuroradiologist performed a blinded reading study of conventional MR images with/without 3D T2-FLAIR images. Interobserver agreement was determined by calculating the κ coefficient. Statistical analyses, including receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were performed. RESULTS: Interobserver agreement for postcontrast T1WI and 3D T2-FLAIR images was excellent (κ = 0.824 and κ = 0.867, respectively). Although the difference in the mean enhancement grade of Rathke cleft cysts and cystic craniopharyngiomas was not significant on postcontrast T1WIs, it was significant on postcontrast 3D T2-FLAIR images (P = .0011). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the conventional MR alone and conventional MR with 3D T2-FLAIR readings was 0.879 and 1.0, respectively, though there was no significant difference in the area under the curve between the 2 readings. CONCLUSIONS: Contrast-enhanced 3D T2-FLAIR imaging at 3T helps to distinguish a Rathke cleft cyst from cystic craniopharyngioma.

AIMS: To investigate the molecular epidemiology, especially temporal variations in genotype distribution, of sapoviruses and Aichi virus 1 (AiV-1) in Arizona, United States, by examining wastewater. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 26 wastewater samples (13 influent and 13 effluent) were collected monthly from a wastewater treatment plant and viral strains were identified through nested reverse transcription-PCR followed by cloning and sequencing analysis. Identified sapovirus strains were classified into seven genotypes belonging to three genogroups (GI, GII, and GV): GI.1, GI.2, GI.3, GII.1, GII.2, GII.8 and GV.1, with a clear temporal shift. The majority of AiV-1 strains identified from the wastewater samples were classified into genotype B, and genotype A strains were identified in only two samples. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a number of sapovirus and AiV-1 strains belonging to multiple genotypes in wastewater samples collected over a 13-month period. Our results suggested a temporal shift in prevalent genotypes in the community. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first study elucidating the genotype distribution of human sapoviruses and AiV-1 in wastewater in the United States. Wastewater surveillance is especially useful for understanding molecular epidemiology of viruses that are less commonly tested in clinical diagnosis, including sapoviruses and AiV-1.

AIMS: Cellular responses of an established cell line from human intestinal epithelial cells (INT-407 cells) against poliovirus (PV) infections were investigated in order to find cellular genetic markers for infectious PV detection. METHODS AND RESULTS: Gene expression profile of INT-407 cells was analysed by DNA microarray technique when cells were infected with poliovirus 1 (PV1) (sabin) at multiplicity of infection of 10-3 and incubated for 12 h. Poliovirus infection significantly altered the gene expressions of two ion channels, KCNJ4 and SCN7A. The expression profile of KCNJ4 gene was further investigated by real-time RT-qPCR, and it was found that KCNJ4 gene was significantly regulated at 24 h postinfection of PV1. CONCLUSIONS: KCNJ4 gene, coding a potassium channel protein, is proposed as a cellular genetic marker for infectious PV detection. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first study to show the availability of cellular responses to detect infectious PV. The selection of cellular genetic markers for infectious viruses using DNA microarray and RT-qPCR can be applicable for the other enteric viruses.

The importance of natural killer (NK) cells in innate immune responses against tumors or viral infections enhances the appeal of NK cell-based immunotherapeutic approaches. We have recently reported that baculovirus (BV)-infected dendritic cells (DCs; BV-DCs) induce antitumor immunity against established tumors in mice. These antitumor effects were CD8+ T-cell and NK cell dependent; however, they were found to be CD4+ T-cell independent. In this study, we investigated the involvement of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) in the process of BV recognition by NK cells. We found that BV directly stimulated NK cells, induced the expression of the activation marker CD69 and promoted interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) production and cytotoxicity. Moreover, TLR9 knockout in mice (tlr9-/- NK cells) inhibited NK cell responses to BV, indicating that TLR9 may have a relevant role in the BV-induced upregulation of NK cell functions. Our data demonstrated for the first time that NK cells directly recognize BV via TLR9, which provides opportunities for the use of this technique as an effective tool for BV-based immunotherapies against malignancies.

BACKGROUND: Regeneration of partial liver grafts is critical for successful living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), especially in adult recipients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the intraoperative hemodynamic changes in partial liver grafts and characterize their potential impact on post-transplant liver regeneration in LDLT. METHODS: We examined the portal venous flow (PVF) and hepatic arterial flow (HAF) to partial liver grafts by means of ultrasonic transit time flowmeter of donors immediately before graft retrieval and of the corresponding recipients after vascular reconstruction in 48 LDLT cases. We evaluated post-transplant liver regeneration according to the changes in graft liver volume between the time of transplantation and the 7th post-transplant day. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in PVF to the partial liver grafts in recipients (rPVF) compared with that in donors. In contrast, graft HAF in recipients significantly decreased compared with that in donors. The rPVF inversely correlated with graft weight (GW)-recipient body weight ratio (GRWR), whereas HAF volume showed no significant correlation. The rPVF/GW positively correlated with the rate of liver regeneration (GRR), which inversely correlated with GRWR. The rPVF/GW was significantly higher, and GRR tended to be larger in the small graft group than in the non-small graft group. CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative portal hemodynamic changes in partial liver grafts strongly affect their post-transplant regeneration. In particular, in small liver grafts, an immediate and remarkable increase in graft PVF may contribute to rapid liver regeneration after LDLT if the increased PVF remains within a safe range.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is widely used in water treatment for biofouling control and, in conjunction with catalysts, as a powerful oxidant for contaminant destruction. H2 O2 could potentially serve as an antifouling agent in reverse osmosis systems in lieu of chlorine-based disinfectants. The dependence of the biocidal efficiency of H2 O2 on cell density, temperature and H2 O2 concentration by determining the growth, attachment and viability of the model bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 was studied. For controlling growth of planktonic PAO1 cells, the minimally required H2 O2 concentration depends on the cell density and temperature. The effect of H2 O2 to remove the existing biofilm was found to be effective in the presence of a high concentration bicarbonate (8·4 g l-1 ), which forms peroxymonocarbonate, a strong oxidant and disinfectant. Treatment with H2 O2 -bicarbonate reduced the density of live PAO1 cells, removed extracellular polymeric substances and lowered the average biofilm thickness while maintaining the integrity of the membrane, suggesting that this type of treatment may be a suitable 'in-place-cleaning' procedure for biofouled membranes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: H2 O2 is evaluated as a potential replacement for chlorine to control biofouling in membrane-based water treatment systems. The biocidal efficacy of H2 O2 was evaluated as a function of H2 O2 concentration, cell density and temperature using the model organism Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Results demonstrated that at low temperatures and low cell densities, bacterial growth and membrane biofouling can be prevented by low H2 O2 concentrations, and existing biofilms could be removed by H2 O2 -bicarbonate mixtures. Findings suggested that H2 O2 could be used as a low cost agent for prevention and controlling biofouling in reverse osmosis applications.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Quantitative susceptibility mapping is useful for assessing iron deposition in the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson disease. We aimed to determine whether quantitative susceptibility mapping is useful for assessing the lateral asymmetry and spatial difference in iron deposits in the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study population comprised 24 patients with Parkinson disease and 24 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. They underwent 3T MR imaging by using a 3D multiecho gradient-echo sequence. On reconstructed quantitative susceptibility mapping, we measured the susceptibility values in the anterior, middle, and posterior parts of the substantia nigra, the whole substantia nigra, and other deep gray matter structures in both hemibrains. To identify the more and less affected hemibrains in patients with Parkinson disease, we assessed the severity of movement symptoms for each hemibrain by using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. RESULTS: In the posterior substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson disease, the mean susceptibility value was significantly higher in the more than the less affected hemibrain substantia nigra (P < .05). This value was significantly higher in both the more and less affected hemibrains of patients with Parkinson disease than in controls (P < .05). Asymmetry of the mean susceptibility values was significantly greater for patients than controls (P < .05). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that quantitative susceptibility mapping of the posterior substantia nigra in the more affected hemibrain provided the highest power for discriminating patients with Parkinson disease from the controls. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative susceptibility mapping is useful for assessing the lateral asymmetry and spatial difference of iron deposition in the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Because the diagnostic significance of cortical superficial siderosis for Alzheimer disease and the association between cortical superficial siderosis and the topographic distribution of cerebral microbleeds have been unclear, we investigated the association between cortical superficial siderosis and clinicoradiologic characteristics of patients with cognitive impairment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 347 patients (217 women, 130 men; mean age, 74 ± 9 years) who visited our memory clinic and underwent MR imaging (3T SWI). We analyzed the association between cortical superficial siderosis and the topographic distribution of cerebral microbleeds plus clinical characteristics including types of dementia. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine the diagnostic significance of cortical superficial siderosis for Alzheimer disease. RESULTS: Twelve patients (3.5%) manifested cortical superficial siderosis. They were older (P = .026) and had strictly lobar cerebral microbleeds significantly more often than did patients without cortical superficial siderosis (50.0% versus 19.4%, P = .02); the occurrence of strictly deep and mixed cerebral microbleeds, however, did not differ in the 2 groups. Alzheimer disease was diagnosed in 162 (46.7%) patients. Of these, 8 patients (4.9%) had cortical superficial siderosis. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis for the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease, lacunar infarcts were negatively and independently associated with Alzheimer disease (P = .007). CONCLUSIONS: Although cortical superficial siderosis was associated with a strictly lobar cerebral microbleed location, it was not independently associated with Alzheimer disease in a memory clinic setting. Additional studies are required to investigate the temporal changes of these cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related MR imaging findings.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The precise identification and measurement of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus on MR imaging remain technically challenging because the thalamic nuclei are small structures. We compared the visualization of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus on phase difference enhanced imaging with 3D high-resolution phase imaging, 2D-T2WI, STIR, proton attenuation-weighted imaging, and DTI acquired at 3T. We also measured the volume and height of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus on phase difference enhanced imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phase difference enhanced, 2D-T2-weighted, STIR, proton attenuation-weighted, and DTI were acquired on a 3T MR imaging unit in 10 healthy volunteers. Two neuroradiologists recorded the qualitative visualization scores of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus, specifically the identification of their boundaries, for all images. Measurement differences were assessed with the Wilcoxon signed rank test. The volume and height of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus were measured on phase difference enhanced imaging and compared with previously reported values. RESULTS: The qualitative visualization scores of the lateral geniculate nucleus and medial geniculate nucleus were significantly higher on phase difference enhanced images than on T2-weighted, proton attenuation-weighted, STIR, or DTI (P < .05). On phase difference enhanced imaging, the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus were bordered by low-intensity structures: the cerebral peduncle, the origin of the optic radiation, and the superior and inferior quadrigeminal brachia. The volume of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus varied from 74.0 to 183.75 mm(3) (mean, 129.0 ± 34.7 mm(3)) and from 96.5 to 173.75 mm(3) (mean, 135.2 ± 28.0 mm(3)), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: For the depiction of the medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus on 3T MR imaging, phase difference enhanced imaging is superior to conventional MR imaging. The medial geniculate nucleus and lateral geniculate nucleus volumes vary among individuals.

AIMS: In the present study, we conducted a quantitative microbial risk assessment forecasting the exposure to Campylobacter jejuni contaminated surfaces during preparation of chicken fillets and how using a disinfectant-wipe intervention to clean a contaminated work area decreases the risk of infection following the preparation of raw chicken fillet in a domestic kitchen. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using a Monte Carlo simulation of the risk of transferring Camp. jejuni strain A3249, from various surfaces to hands and subsequently transferring it to the mouth was forecasted. The use of a disinfectant-wipe intervention to disinfect contaminated surface area was also assessed. Several assumptions were used as input parameters in the classical Beta-Poisson model to determine the risk of infection. The disinfectant-wipe intervention reduced the risk of Camp. jejuni infection by 2-3 orders on all fomites. CONCLUSIONS: The use of disinfectant wipes after the preparation of raw chicken meat reduces the risk of Camp. jejuni infections. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This risk assessment shows that the use of disinfectant wipes to decontaminate surface areas after chicken preparation reduces the annual risk of Camp. jejuni infections up to 99·2%, reducing the risk from 2 : 10 to 2 : 1000.

Recently, we showed that baculovirus (BV)-infected dendritic cells (DCs) (BV-DCs) induced antitumor immunity against established tumors in mice. These antitumor effects were CD8(+) T-cell and natural killer (NK) cell dependent but CD4(+) T-cell independent. In the current study, we examined the antitumor effect of BV-DCs on human pancreatic cancer cells (AsPC-1). After treatment with BV-infected bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs), human pancreatic tumors caused by AsPC-1 cells in a nude mouse model were significantly reduced in size, and the survival of the mice was improved compared with that of non-immature BMDC (iDC)- and BV-DC-immunized mice. We also found that wild-type BV could activate human DCs (HDCs) and that NK cells were activated by BV-infected HDCs (BHDCs). Our findings show that BV-DCs can induce antitumor immunity, which paves the way for the use of this technique as an effective tool for DC immunotherapy against malignancies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Systematic investigations of the distinguishing imaging features between spinal hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow and bone metastasis have not been reported, to our knowledge. The purpose of this study was to determine the distinguishing imaging features of the 2 entities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the radiologic images of 8 consecutive male patients (age range, 52-78 years; mean, 64 years) with suspected spinal metastasis on MR imaging and FDG-PET, which was later confirmed as hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow. MR imaging, FDG-PET, CT, and bone scintigraphy images were qualitatively and/or quantitatively evaluated. Imaging findings in 24 patients with spinal metastasis were compared, and differences were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: All 8 vertebral hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow lesions were hypointense on T1- and T2-weighted images; lesions contiguous with the adjacent vertebra were significantly more often seen in hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow than in metastasis (P = .035). T2 signal intensity of the lesion was significantly different between the 2 entities (P = .033). FDG-PET showed slightly higher uptake in all hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow lesions; their maximum standard uptake value was significantly lower than that of metastatic lesions (P = .037). CT attenuation of hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow was equal to or slightly higher than that of adjacent normal-appearing vertebra; the CT appearances of hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow and metastasis were significantly different (P < .01). Bone scintigraphy showed normal uptake for all vertebrae with hyperplastic hematopoietic bone marrow; the uptake was significantly different from that of metastasis (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: If a lesion was isointense to hyperintense to normal-appearing marrow on MR imaging or had a maximum standard uptake value of >3.6, the lesion was considered metastatic. A normal appearance on CT or bone scintigraphy excluded metastasis.

AIMS: To investigate the antiviral efficacy of oregano oil and its primary active component, carvacrol, against the nonenveloped murine norovirus (MNV), a human norovirus surrogate. METHODS AND RESULTS: Along with an observed loss in cell culture infectivity, the antiviral mechanisms of action were determined in side-by-side experiments including a cell-binding assay, an RNase I protection assay and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Both antimicrobials produced statistically significant reductions (P ≤ 0·05) in virus infectivity within 15 min of exposure (c. 1·0-log10). Despite this, the MNV infectivity remained stable with increasing time exposure to oregano oil (1·07-log10 after 24 h), while carvacrol was far more effective, producing up to 3·87-log10 reductions within 1 h. Based on the RNase I protection assay, both antimicrobials appeared to act directly upon the virus capsid and subsequently the RNA. Under TEM, the capsids enlarged from ≤35 nm in diameter to up to 75 nm following treatment with oregano oil and up to 800 nm with carvacrol; with greater expansion, capsid disintegration could be observed. Virus adsorption to host cells did not appear to be affected by either antimicrobial. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that carvacrol is effective in inactivating MNV within 1 h of exposure by acting directly on the viral capsid and subsequently the RNA. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study provides novel findings on the antiviral properties of oregano oil and carvacrol against MNV and demonstrates the potential of carvacrol as a natural food and surface (fomite) sanitizer to control human norovirus.

OBJECTIVE: Surgeries for cancer of the esophagus are still associated with a high rate of postoperative morbidity. There are few reports of perioperative nutritional support for patients undergoing esophageal cancer surgery, and there is insufficient evidence to recommend routine use of immunonutrition in these patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether preoperative immunonutrition positively influences key clinical outcomes such as postoperative infectious complications, mortality, length of hospital stay, and short-term survival in this population. DESIGN AND SETTING: We undertook a retrospective investigation of the effects of preoperative nutritional support on the postoperative course of esophageal cancer surgery at the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, International University of Health and Welfare Mita Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-five patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer were included in this study. Of the 55 patients, 26 patients consumed a liquid dietary supplement (IMPACT group) before surgery and 29 patients did not (STANDARD group). INTERVENTION: Before surgery, the IMPACT group consumed 750 ml (3 packs)/day of Impact for 5 consecutive days. MEASUREMENTS: The analysis was based on postoperative complications, hospital mortality, length of hospital stay, and short-term survival. RESULTS: Significantly fewer patients developed postoperative infections in the IMPACT group compared with the STANDARD group (p=.007): 4 of 21 patients in the IMPACT group and 10 of 29 patients in the STANDARD group. Either an infectious complication or another complication developed in 8 patients in the IMPACT group and 13 patients in the STANDARD group, with the result that 6 patients in the STANDARD group died of postoperative complications (p=.001). The duration of hospitalization was 34 days in the IMPACT group and 48 days in the STANDARD group; hence, hospitalization was significantly shorter in patients treated with Impact (p=.008). The mean 6-month survival rates for the IMPACT group and the STANDARD group were 92% (24/26) and 72% (21/29), respectively (p=.028). CONCLUSION: Simple preoperative supplementation significantly improved outcome. Administration of the supplemental diet before esophageal surgery appeared to be an effective strategy in reducing infectious complications, mortality, and hospitalization, and improving short-term survival.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The prevalence and topography of small hypointense foci suggesting microbleeds on 3T SWI in various types of dementia have not been systematically investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and topography of SHF on 3T SWI in patients with different dementia subtypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 347 consecutive patients (217 women, 130 men; age range, 42-93 years; mean age, 74 years) who attended our memory clinic and underwent 3T SWI. They were divided into 6 groups: subjective complaints, MCI, AD, DLB, VaD, and FTLD. Two neuroradiologists evaluated the number and location of SHF on SWIs. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate inter- and intragroup differences. RESULTS: Of the 347 patients, 160 (46.1%) exhibited at least 1 small hypointense focus. This was true in 86% with VaD, 54% with DLB, 48% with AD, 41% with MCI, 27% with FTLD, and 22% with subjective complaints. With the subjective complaints group as a reference, the odds ratio adjusted by age, sex, and arterial hypertension was 9.2 (95% CI, 2.0-43.6) for VaD; 5.4 (95% CI, 1.2-24.3) for AD; 3.1 for DLB (95% CI, 1.1-8.8); 2.0 for MCI (95% CI, 0.5-8.1); and 1.5 for FTLD (95% CI, 0.4-5.4). There was a significant lobar predilection for AD, DLB, and FTLD groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: On 3T SWI, patients with VaD, AD, and DLB manifested a high SHF prevalence. In patients with AD, DLB, and FTLD, the SHF exhibited a lobar predilection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: For identifying the arterial feeders of meningiomas, the usefulness of 3D TOF MRA at 3T has not been systematically investigated. This study was intended to assess whether unenhanced 3D TOF MRA at 3T can replace DSA for the identification of arteries feeding intracranial meningiomas and whether it is useful for assessing their dural attachment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one consecutive patients with intracranial meningiomas (18 women, 3 men; aged 42-77 years, mean 57 years) underwent DSA, conventional MR imaging, and 3D TOF MRA. Two neuroradiologists independently evaluated the primary and secondary feeders of each tumor on maximum-intensity-projection and source MRA images. They also identified the location of dural attachments based on information from MR imaging/MRA images. Interobserver and intermodality agreement was determined by calculating the κ coefficient. RESULTS: For the identification of primary and secondary feeders on MRA images, interobserver agreement was very good (κ=0.83; 95% CI, 0.66-1.00) and moderate (κ=0.58; 95% CI, 0.34-0.82) and intermodality agreement (consensus reading of MRA versus DSA findings) was excellent (κ=0.94; 95% CI, 0.84-1.00) and good (κ=0.72; 95% CI, 0.51-0.93), respectively. With respect to the dural attachment of meningiomas, interobserver agreement was very good (κ=0.95; 95% CI, 0.84-1.00). The agreement in the diagnosis between MR imaging/MRA and surgery was excellent (κ=1.00). CONCLUSIONS: Unenhanced 3D TOF MRA at 3T cannot at present supplant DSA for the identification of the feeding arteries of intracranial meningiomas. This information may be useful for evaluating their dural attachment.

AIMS: To evaluate and compare the reductions of human viruses and F-specific coliphages in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant based on the quantitative PCR (qPCR) and plate count assays. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 24 water samples were collected from four locations at the plant, and the relative abundance of human viruses and F-RNA phage genogroups were determined by qPCR. Of the 10 types of viruses tested, enteric adenoviruses were the most prevalent in both influent and effluent wastewater samples. Of the different treatment steps, the activated sludge process was most effective in reducing the microbial loads. Viruses and F-RNA phages showed variable reduction; among them, GI and GIII F-RNA phages showed the lowest and the highest reduction, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Ten types of viruses were present in wastewater that is discharged into public water bodies after treatment. The variability in reduction for the different virus types demonstrates that selection of adequate viral indicators is important for evaluating the efficacy of wastewater treatment and ensuring the water safety. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Our comprehensive analyses of the occurrence and reduction of viruses and indicators can contribute to the future establishment of appropriate viral indicators to evaluate the efficacy of wastewater treatment.

We investigated the pharmacokinetics of mizoribine in the acute phase after adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Between February 2004 and October 2009, 16 recipients received immunosuppressive therapy that included mizoribine (100 to 200 mg/d) after undergoing LDLT. We determined the serum levels of mizoribine before (C0) and 3 (C3), 4 (C4), and 10 (C10) hours after administration on postoperative days 3, 7, and 21. We assessed area under the concentration time curve (AUC) (hour · µg/mL), normalized serum concentration (NSC) at C0 [concentration (µg/mL)/dose (mg/kg body weight)], and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The mizoribine concentration showed increases at C3 and C4 followed by a decrease at C10 on all days. AUC was 4.3, 5.9, and 8.3 in the 200-mg/d dose group on days 3, 7, and 21, respectively. NSC at C0 increased for 3 weeks after LDLT. There was a significant correlation between the NSC at C0 and eGFR on day 21, but not on days 3 and 7. There were no correlations between the NSC at C0 and either aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, albumin, trough cyclosporine, or trough tacrolimus on any day. The pharmacokinetics of mizoribine in the acute phase after LDLT seems to be affected by postoperative day and renal function.
