RESUMO

Spectroscopy in the visible near-infrared spectral (Vis-NIRS) range combined with imaging techniques (hyperspectral imaging, HSI) allows assessment of chemical composition, texture, and meat structure. The use of HSI in the meat and food industry has observed a significant growth in the last decade, yet its use for assessment of meat it is not optimal yet. The application of HSI for assessment of meat is reviewed with focus on its ability to capture meat unique chemical and structural characteristics. While HSI is widely used for assessment of chemical composition, a limited number of evidences on its ability to handle the effect of different sources of variation on the assessment is found. The use of spatially resolved spectroscopy has been able to detect structural information related to animal background, muscle type, rigor process and ageing. Similarly the use of texture features seem to capture unique characteristics of meat.

RESUMO

This paper proposes a fast and reliable method for anomaly detection and localization in video data showing crowded scenes. Time-efficient anomaly localization is an ongoing challenge and subject of this paper. We propose a cubicpatch- based method, characterised by a cascade of classifiers, which makes use of an advanced feature-learning approach. Our cascade of classifiers has two main stages. First, a light but deep 3D auto-encoder is used for early identification of "many" normal cubic patches. This deep network operates on small cubic patches as being the first stage, before carefully resizing remaining candidates of interest, and evaluating those at the second stage using a more complex and deeper 3D convolutional neural network (CNN). We divide the deep autoencoder and the CNN into multiple sub-stages which operate as cascaded classifiers. Shallow layers of the cascaded deep networks (designed as Gaussian classifiers, acting as weak single-class classifiers) detect "simple" normal patches such as background patches, and more complex normal patches are detected at deeper layers. It is shown that the proposed novel technique (a cascade of two cascaded classifiers) performs comparable to current top-performing detection and localization methods on standard benchmarks, but outperforms those in general with respect to required computation time.

The Hough transform is a popular technique used in the field of image processing and computer vision. With a Hough transform technique, not only the normal angle and distance of a line but also the line-segment's length and midpoint (centroid) can be extracted by analysing the voting distribution around a peak in the Hough space. In this paper, a method based on minimum-entropy analysis is proposed to extract the set of parameters of a line segment. In each column around a peak in Hough space, the voting values specify probabilistic distributions. The corresponding entropies and statistical means are computed. The line-segment's normal angle and length are simultaneously computed by fitting a quadratic polynomial curve to the voting entropies. The line-segment's midpoint and normal distance are computed by fitting and interpolating a linear curve to the voting means. The proposed method is tested on simulated images for detection accuracy by providing comparative results. Experimental results on real-world images verify the method as well. The proposed method for line-segment detection is both accurate and robust in the presence of quantization error, background noise, or pixel disturbances.

The recognition of tracks plays an important role in ecological research and monitoring, and tracking tunnels are a cost-effective method for indexing species over large areas. Traditionally, tracks are collected by a tracking system, and analysis is cairied out in a manual identification procedure by experienced wildlife biologists. Unfortunately, human experts are unable to reliably distinguish tracks of morphologically similar species. We propose a new method using image analysis, which allows automatic species identification of tracks, and apply the method to identifying cryptic small-mammal species. We demonstrate the method by identifying footprints of three invasive rat species with similar morphology that co-occur in New Zealand, including detection of a recent invasion of a rat-free island. Automatic footprint recognition successfully identified the species of rat for >70% of footprints, and >83% of tracking cards. With appropriate changes to the image recognition, the method could be broadly applicable to any taxa that can be tracked. Identification of tracks to species level gives better estimates of species presence and composition in communities.

In this paper we define and study digital manifolds of arbitrary dimension, and provide (in particular)a general theoretical basis for curve or surface tracing in picture analysis. The studies involve properties such as one-dimensionality of digital curves and (n-1)-dimensionality of digital hypersurfaces that makes them discrete analogs of corresponding notions in continuous topology. The presented approach is fully based on the concept of adjacency relation and complements the concept of dimension as common in combinatorial topology. This work appears to be the first one on digital manifolds based ona graph-theoretical definition of dimension. In particular, in the n-dimensional digital space, a digital curve is a one-dimensional object and a digital hypersurface is an (n-1)-dimensional object, as it is in the case of curves and hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space. Relying on the obtained properties of digital hypersurfaces, we propose a uniform approach for studying good pairs defined by separations and obtain a classification of good pairs in arbitrary dimension. We also discuss possible applications of the presented definitions and results.

RESUMO

This paper compares previously published length estimators in image analysis having digitized curves as input. The evaluation uses multigrid convergence (theoretical results and measured speed of convergence) and further measures as criteria. This paper also suggests a new gradient-based method for length estimation, and combines a previously proposed length estimator for straight segments with a polygonalization method.
