OBJECTIVE: Although breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable screening tool, breast MRI testing burden was associated with cancer worry and quality of life. We aimed to develop and validate the MRI-related distress scale (MRI-DS) to assess comprehensive distress specifically related to breast MRI. METHODS: We enrolled women aged above 18 years, diagnosed breast cancer, had MRI examination at least one time, and who could speak and read Korean in phase I and enrolled women aged above 18 years, visited outpatient clinic of breast general surgery, had undergone MRI examination at least once, and could speak and read Korean in phase II. We excluded patients who had any physical or psychiatric conditions in both phases. We recruited from a tertiary university-based hospital in South Korea between April and August 2023. RESULTS: All 18 items had acceptable levels of item correlation (≥0.30) in the explanatory factor analysis with a four-factor solution. The fit indices for the four-factor solution model were good. The discriminant validity of the MRI-DS had a moderate correlation with general anxiety or quality of life. In the known-group analysis, those who reported MRI as the most burden breast examination had higher total scores. CONCLUSION: The validity of the MRI-DS has been confirmed as a scale for measuring the specific distress caused by breast MRI. The MRI-DS is recommended to health professional to communicate with patients with MRI. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: It can be used to assess the distress associated with MRI screening in breast cancer patients. Physician could use MRI-DS to discuss the reasons for distress caused by breast MRI screening and to address specific sources of discomfort associated with it.

Naturally occurring homoisoflavonoids isolated from some Liliaceae plants have been reported to have diverse biological activities (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic effects). The exact mechanism by which homoisoflavonones exert anti-neuroinflammatory effects against activated microglia-induced inflammatory cascades has not been well studied. Here, we aimed to explore the mechanism of homoisoflavonoid SH66 having a potential anti-inflammatory effect in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-primed BV2 murine microglial cells. Microglia cells were pre-treated with SH66 followed by LPS (100 ng/mL) activation. SH66 treatment attenuated the production of inflammatory mediators, including nitric oxide and proinflammatory cytokines, by down-regulating mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in LPS-activated microglia. The SH66-mediated inhibition of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome complex and the respective inflammatory biomarker-like active interleukin (IL)-1ß were noted to be one of the key pathways of the anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, SH66 increased the neurite length in the N2a neuronal cell and the level of nerve growth factor in the C6 astrocyte cell. Our results demonstrated the anti-neuroinflammatory effect of SH66 against LPS-activated microglia-mediated inflammatory events by down-regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome complex, with respect to its neuroprotective effect. SH66 could be an interesting candidate for further research and development regarding prophylactics and therapeutics for inflammation-mediated neurological complications.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether ultrafast sequence improves the diagnostic performance of conventional dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) in differentiating additional suspicious lesions (ASLs) on preoperative breast MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective database search identified 668 consecutive patients who underwent preoperative breast DCE-MRI with ultrafast sequence between June 2020 and July 2021. Among these, 107 ASLs from 98 patients with breast cancer (36 multifocal, 42 multicentric, and 29 contralateral) were identified. Clinical, pathological, conventional MRI findings, and ultrafast sequence-derived parameters were collected. A prediction model that adds ultrafast sequence-derived parameters to clinical, pathological, and conventional MRI findings was developed and validated internally. Decision curve analysis and net reclassification index statistics were performed. A nomogram was constructed. RESULTS: The ultrafast model adding time to peak enhancement, time to enhancement, and maximum slope showed a significantly increased area under the receiver operating characteristic curve compared with the conventional model which includes age, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 expression of index cancer, size of index cancer, lesion type of index cancer, location of ASL, and size of ASL (0.92 vs. 0.82; p = 0.002). The decision curve analysis showed that the ultrafast model had a higher overall net benefit than the conventional model. The net reclassification index of ultrafast model was 23.3% (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: A combination of ultrafast sequence-derived parameters with clinical, pathological, and conventional MRI findings can aid in the differentiation of ASL on preoperative breast MRI. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Our prediction model and nomogram that was based on ultrafast sequence-derived parameters could help radiologists differentiate ASLs on preoperative breast MRI. KEY POINTS: Ultrafast MRI can diminish background parenchymal enhancement and possibly improve diagnostic accuracy for additional suspicious lesions (ASLs). Location of ASL, larger size of ASL, and higher maximum slope were associated with malignant ASL. The ultrafast model and nomogram can help preoperatively differentiate additional malignancies.

BACKGROUND: Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) has become the standard modality of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in critically ill patients. However, consensus is lacking regarding the criteria for discontinuing CRRT. Here we validated the usefulness of the prediction model for successful discontinuation of CRRT in a multicenter retrospective cohort. METHODS: One temporal cohort and four external cohorts included 1,517 patients with acute kidney injury who underwent CRRT for >2 days from 2018 to 2020. The model was composed of four variables: urine output, blood urea nitrogen, serum potassium, and mean arterial pressure. Successful discontinuation of CRRT was defined as the absence of an RRT requirement for 7 days thereafter. RESULTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was 0.74 (95% confidence interval, 0.71-0.76). The probabilities of successful discontinuation were approximately 17%, 35%, and 70% in the low-score, intermediate-score, and highscore groups, respectively. The model performance was good in four cohorts (AUROC, 0.73-0.75) but poor in one cohort (AUROC, 0.56). In one cohort with poor performance, attending physicians primarily controlled CRRT prescription and discontinuation, while in the other four cohorts, nephrologists determined all important steps in CRRT operation, including screening for CRRT discontinuation. CONCLUSION: The overall performance of our prediction model using four simple variables for successful discontinuation of CRRT was good, except for one cohort where nephrologists did not actively engage in CRRT operation. These results suggest the need for active engagement of nephrologists and protocolized management for CRRT discontinuation.

BACKGROUND: Whether advanced age is associated with poor outcomes of elderly patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is controversial. This study aimed to evaluate age effect and predictors for mortality in elderly AKI patients undergoing CRRT. METHODS: Data of 480 elderly AKI patients who underwent CRRT were retrospectively analyzed. Subjects were stratified into two groups according to age: younger-old (age, 65-74 years; n = 205) and older-old (age, ≥75 years; n = 275). Predictors for 28-day and 90-day mortality and age effects were analyzed using multivariable Cox regression analysis and propensity score matching. RESULTS: Urine output at the start of CRRT (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.99; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.99-1.00; p = 0.04), operation (aHR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.30-0.93; p = 0.03), and use of an intra-aortic balloon pump (aHR, 3.60; 95% CI, 1.18-10.96; p = 0.02) were predictors for 28-day mortality. Ischemic heart disease (aHR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.02-2.98; p = 0.04) and use of a ventilator (aHR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.36-0.89; p = 0.01) were predictors for 90-day mortality. The older-old group did not exhibit a higher risk for 28- day or 90-day mortality than the younger-old group in multivariable or propensity score-matched models. CONCLUSION: Advanced age was not a risk factor for mortality among elderly AKI patients undergoing CRRT, suggesting that advanced age should not be considered for therapeutic decisions in critically ill elderly patients with AKI requiring CRRT.

PRECIS: Different mechanisms of angle closure represented distinct aspects of intraocular pressure (IOP) control after phacoemulsification. Classification of angle closure mechanisms is necessary for postoperative IOP management and glaucoma progression in primary angle closure eyes. PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the anterior chamber angle (ACA) characteristics, measured by swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (SS AS-OCT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) control after phacoemulsification in eyes with primary angle closure disease (PACD) with different angle closure mechanisms. METHODS: PACD eyes were classified into 3 groups according to angle closure mechanisms using preoperative SS AS-OCT images; pupillary block (PB), plateau iris configuration (PIC), exaggerated lens vault (ELV). This retrospective, clinical cohort study included eighty-five eyes of 85 PACD patients: 34 with PB, 23 with PIC, and 28 with ELV. ACA parameters were measured preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively using SS AS-OCT. IOP measurements were performed preoperatively and during six months postoperatively. Postoperative IOP reduction and fluctuation were calculated, and their correlations with SS AS-OCT parameters were analyzed. RESULTS: PIC group showed the lowest postoperative IOP reduction compared to the other groups (P=0.023). Preoperative ACA measurements were significantly associated with postoperative IOP reduction in ELV and PB groups, while postoperative measurements were in PIC group. Preoperative and postoperative change of iridotrabecular contact (ITC) index and area were correlated with postoperative IOP reduction in PB and ELV groups but not in PIC group. Postoperative ITC index (P=0.031) and area (P=0.003) showed significant correlations with postoperative IOP fluctuation only in PIC group. CONCLUSIONS: SS AS-OCT parameters including ITC index and area showed different associations with postoperative IOP control, which should be considered in determination of lens extraction and treatment of PACD eyes.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) accounts for approximately 15-20% of all breast cancer types, indicating a poor survival prognosis with a more aggressive biology of metastasis to the lung and a short response duration to available therapies. Ibulocydine (IB) is a novel (cyclin-dependent kinase) CDK7/9 inhibitor prodrug displaying potent anti-cancer effects against various cancer cell types. We performed in vitro and in vivo experiments to determine whether IB inhibits metastasis and eventually overcomes the poor drug response in TNBC. The result showed that IB inhibited the growth of TNBC cells by inducing caspase-mediated apoptosis and blocking metastasis by reducing MMP-9 expression in vitro. Concurrently, in vivo experiments using the metastasis model showed that IB inhibited metastasis of MDA-MB-231-Luc cells to the lung. Collectively, these results demonstrate that IB inhibited the growth of TNBC cells and blocked metastasis by regulating MMP-9 expression, suggesting a novel therapeutic agent for metastatic TNBC.

Idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is defined as at least two pregnancy losses before 20 weeks of gestation. Approximately 5% of pregnant couples experience idiopathic RPL, which is a heterogeneous disease with various causes including hormonal, chromosomal, and intrauterine abnormalities. Although how pregnancy loss occurs is still unknown, numerous biological factors are associated with the incidence of pregnancy loss, including genetic variants. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was conducted on blood samples from 56 Korean patients with RPL and 40 healthy controls. The WES data were aligned by means of bioinformatic analysis, and the detected variants were annotated using machine learning tools to predict the pathogenicity of protein alterations. Each indicated variant was confirmed using Sanger sequencing. A replication study was also conducted in 112 patients and 114 controls. The Variant Effect Scoring Tool, Combined Annotation Dependent Depletion tool, Sorting Intolerant from Tolerant annotation tool, and various databases detected 10 potential variants previously associated with spontaneous abortion genes in patients by means of a bioinformatic analysis of WES data. Several variants were detected in more than one patient. Interestingly, several of the detected genes were functionally clustered, including some with a secretory function (mucin 4; MUC4; rs200737893 G>A and hyaluronan-binding protein 2; HABP2; rs542838125 G>T), in which growth arrest-specific 2 Like 2 (GAS2L2; rs140842796 C>T) and dynamin 2 (DNM2; rs763894364 G>A) are functionally associated with cell protrusion and the cytoskeleton. ATP Binding Cassette Subfamily C Member 6 (ABCC6) was the only gene with two variants. HABP2 (rs542838125 G>T), MUC4 (rs200737893 G>A), and GAS2L2 (rs140842796 C>T) were detected in only the patient group in the replication study. The combination of WES and machine learning tools is a useful method to detect potential variants associated with RPL. Using bioinformatic tools, we found 10 potential variants in 9 genes. WES data from patients are needed to better understand the causes of RPL.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stroke can impair cardiopulmonary function, mobility, and daily activities. This study assessed the impact of robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) on such impairments. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of robot-assisted gait training on cardiopulmonary function, walking ability, lower extremity function and strength, activities of daily living (ADLs), and blood test results among individuals with chronic stroke. METHODS: A multicenter, prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial with 22 chronic stroke participants compared RAGT against a control exercise regimen. RAGT involved three days weekly sessions of high-intensity interval training for 8 weeks (24 sessions) with a Morning Walk® device. The control group also performed home exercises. (24 sessions) Measures included VO2max, Functional Ambulatory Category, 2-minute walk test, 10-meter walk test, Motricity Index-Lower, Korean version of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale, Modified Barthel Index, Berg Balance Scale, muscle strength, InBody body composition, and blood tests (cholesterol, lipid, glucose). RESULTS: RAGT significantly improved VO2max, gait, balance, and lower limb strength compared with controls, with significant improvements in 2-minute walk test, 10-meter walk test, Motricity Index-Lower, and Fugl-Meyer Assessment outcomes. No changes were seen in muscle mass or blood markers. CONCLUSION: RAGT enhances cardiopulmonary function and ambulatory capacity in chronic stroke patients, underscoring its potential in stroke rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic respiratory diseases in children deteriorate their daily life due to dyspnea and reduced lung function. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation in pediatric chronic respiratory diseases. METHODS: This prospective, single-arm, cohort study included children with chronic lung disease. They were instructed to perform home-based pulmonary rehabilitation 30 min/session, three sessions/week for three months. Pulmonary function test (PFT) using spirometry, respiratory muscle strength (RMT), cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), 6 min walk test (6MWT), dyspnea questionnaires, speech evaluation, and pediatric quality of life inventory (PedsQL) were assessed pre- and post-pulmonary rehabilitation. Compliance and satisfaction of the program were also evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty children (mean age: 11.2 ± 3.1 years) with chronic respiratory diseases without cardiopulmonary instability participated. The overall compliance was 71.1% with no related adverse events. After pulmonary rehabilitation, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), RMT, 6MWT, dyspnea questionnaire, speech rate, and PedsQL (child) significantly improved (p < 0.05), particularly better in the FEV1 < 60% group than in the FEV1 ≥ 60% group and in the high-compliance group (compliance ≥ 50%) than in the low-compliance group (compliance < 50%). CONCLUSIONS: Home-based pulmonary rehabilitation for children with chronic lung disease was feasible with high compliance and effective in terms of objective functions, subjective dyspnea symptom, and quality of life.

The current research was the first to prove the existence of fluctuations in the metabolite constituents and antioxidant properties in different organs (leaves, stems, and roots) of the mountain-cultivated ginseng (MCG) plant during a two-month maturation period. Four metabolites, including fatty acids, amino acids, ginsenosides, and phenolic phytochemicals, exhibited considerable differences in organs and maturation times with the following order: leaves > stems > roots. The predominant metabolite contents were found in leaves, with fatty acid (1057.9 mg/100 g) on 31 May, amino acid (1989.2 mg/100 g) on 13 July, ginsenosides (88.7 mg/g) on 31 May, and phenolic phytochemical (638.3 µg/g) on 31 May. Interestingly, ginsenoside content in leaves were highest, with 84.8 → 88.7 → 82.2 → 78.3 mg/g. Specifically, ginsenosides Re, Rd, and F2 showed abundant content ranging from 19.1 to 16.9 mg/g, 8.5 to 14.8 mg/g, and 9.5 to 13.1 mg/g, respectively. Phenolic phytochemicals exhibited remarkable differences in organs compared to maturation periods, with the highest total phenolic content and total flavonoid content recorded at 9.48 GAE and 1.30 RE mg/g in leaves on 31 May. The antioxidant capacities on radical, FRAP, and DNA protection differed significantly, with leaves on 31 May exhibiting the highest values: 88.4% (DPPH), 89.5% (ABTS), 0.84 OD593 nm (FRAP) at 500 µg/mL, and 100% DNA protection at 50 µg/mL. Furthermore, principal cluster analysis revealed metabolite variability as follows: ginsenoside (83.3%) > amino acid (71.8%) > phenolic phytochemical (61.1%) > fatty acid (58.8%). A clustering heatmap highlighted significant changes in metabolite components under the maturation times for each organ. Our findings suggest that MCG leaves on 31 May may be a potential source for developing nutraceuticals, offering highly beneficial components and strong antioxidants.

The importance of aesthetics in children has increased over time. Therefore, this multicenter randomized clinical trial aimed to analyze and compare three-dimensional (3D)-printed resin crowns (RCs) as a potential alternative to stainless-steel crowns (SSCs) for restoring primary molars with extensive carious lesions. According to the null hypothesis, no statistically significant difference was observed in restoration failure between RC and SSC groups. A total of 56 primary molars after pulp treatment at two dental hospitals were included. After pulp treatment, the teeth were randomly divided into two groups: SSCs (n = 28) and RCs (n = 28). At 1 week and 3, 6 and 12 months, the Quigley-Hein plaque index (QHI), gingival index (GI), occlusal wear, and survival rate were assessed by examination, radiography and alginate impressions. No significant difference in QHI was observed between the two groups. However, the GI at 12 months and occlusal wear in the RC group were significantly higher than those in the SSC group (p < 0.05). The survival rates were 100% in the SSC group and 82.1% in the RC group (p = 0.047). Cracks and discoloration were also observed in the RCs. Within the limitations of this study, 3D-printed RCs are aesthetically superior to SSCs and clinically easy to repair. However, if clinical effectiveness and safety are improved, RCs could potentially become a viable aesthetic alternative in the future.

Aging-related bone loss is driven by various biological factors, such as imbalanced bone metabolism from decreased osteoblast and increased osteoclast activities. Various transcriptional and post-transcriptional factors increase osteoclast activity with aging; however, studies regarding the post-translational regulators of osteoclast activity are still limited. The ubiquitin E3 ligase Pellino-1 is a well-known post-translational regulator of inflammation. However, how Pellino-1 expression regulation affects osteoclast differentiation remains unclear. This study determined that Pellino-1 levels are reduced in bone marrow monocytes (BMMs) from 40-week-old mice compared to 4-week-old mice. Interestingly, conditional Knockout (cKO) of Pellino-1 in 6-week-old mice resulted in decreased bone mass, reduced body size, and lower weight than in Pellino-1 floxed mice; however, these differences are not observed in 20-week-old mice. The increased number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cells and serum levels of C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen, a marker of bone resorption, in 6-week-old Pellino-1 cKO mice implied a connection between Pellino-1 and the osteoclast population. Enhanced TRAP activity and upregulation of osteoclast genes in BMMs from the cKO mice indicate that Pellino-1 deletion affects osteoclast differentiation, leading to decreased bone mass and heightened osteoclast activity. Thus, targeting Pellino-1 could be a potential gene therapy for managing and preventing osteoporosis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the predictive capabilities of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL) thinning to detect visual field (VF) progression in normal-tension glaucoma patients with an initial parafoveal scotoma (IPFS) or nasal step (INS). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A total of 185 early-stage glaucoma eyes, followed for 10 years, were retrospectively stratified into IPFS and INS groups. Progressive pRNFL and mGCIPL thinning were assessed using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and VF progression using both event- or trend-based analysis. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis compared VF survival in each VF phenotype with or without progressive pRNFL and mGCIPL thinning. Cox proportional regression analysis identified VF progression factors. RESULTS: VF progression was detected in 42 IPFS (n = 86) and 47 INS (n = 99) eyes. Among VF progressors, pRNFL thinning was significantly faster in INS group compared to IPFS group (P < .01), while mGCIPL thinning was similar (P = .16). At 5 years, eyes with progressive mGCIPL thinning showed significantly lower VF survival in both VF phenotypes (all P < .05). Progressive pRNFL thinning showed significantly lower VF survival only in INS eyes (P = .015). Cox multivariate regression revealed that mGCIPL thinning predicted subsequent VF progression in IPFS eyes, while mGCIPL and pRNFL thinning had significant associations with VF progression in INS eyes. CONCLUSIONS: mGCIPL outperforms pRNFL at early follow-up in detecting VF progression in IPFS eyes but not INS eyes. Appropriate selection of structural parameters (mGCIPL vs. pRNFL) maximizes early VF progression detection according to initial VF defect location.

Background: Despite the common use of ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) for axillary node (AN) in breast cancer patients, only a limited number of studies are available regarding the diagnostic performance of AN-FNA according to the suspicion level based on US findings. This study compares the outcomes of US-guided AN-FNA in breast cancer patients, differentiating between those undergoing staging and surveillance. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study with retrospective analysis was conducted on 767 consecutive AN-FNA procedures performed in 2017 at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, with 654 for staging and 113 for surveillance in breast cancer patients. The radiologists performed axillary US and the specific finding was prospectively classified into the AN-reporting and data system (AN-RADS) category 3-5 before FNA. The malignancy rate of each category was evaluated. The chi-square test, with or without Bonferroni correction, or Fisher's exact test was used to compare the malignancy rates between the staging and surveillance groups for each category. Results: Among the 767 AN-FNAs, 424 (55.3%) were malignant. The malignancy rate was significantly higher in the staging group (59.5%) than in the surveillance group (31.0%, P<0.0001). The distribution of AN-RADS categories differed between the groups (P=0.015), with 4A being the most common. The malignancy rates in categories 3, 4A, 4B, 4C, and 5 were as follows: 5.6%, 36.0%, 77.4%, 87.7%, and 98.4% in the staging group, and 0.0%, 9.7%, 53.3%, 88.9%, and 100% in the surveillance group. The malignancy rate was significantly different between the two groups only in category 4A (P=0.0001). Conclusions: AN-FNA according to AN-RADS category appears to be an appropriate method for determination of axillary nodal status. Overall malignancy rate of AN-FNA in breast cancer patients was higher in the staging group than in the surveillance group. According to the suspicion level, the difference between two groups was significant only in category 4A.

The conventional inactivated split seasonal influenza vaccine offers low efficacy, particularly in the elderly and against antigenic variants. Here, to improve the efficacy of seasonal vaccination for the elderly population, we tested whether supplementing seasonal bivalent (H1N1 + H3N2) split (S) vaccine with M2 ectodomain repeat and multi-subtype consensus neuraminidase (NA) proteins (N1 NA + N2 NA + flu B NA) on a virus-like particle (NA-M2e) would induce enhanced cross-protection against different influenza viruses in aged mice. Immunization with split vaccine plus NA-M2e (S + NA-M2e) increased vaccine-specific IgG antibodies towards T-helper type 1 responses and hemagglutination inhibition titers. Aged mice with NA-M2e supplemented vaccination were protected against homologous and heterologous viruses at higher efficacies, as evidenced by preventing weight loss, lowering lung viral loads, inducing broadly cross-protective humoral immunity, and IFN-γ+ CD4 and CD8 T cell responses than those with seasonal vaccine. Overall, this study supports a new strategy of NA-M2e supplemented vaccination to enhance protection against homologous and antigenically different viruses in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Studies have compared diabetes management quality indicators, focusing on physiological markers such as hemoglobin A1c, between cancer survivors with diabetes and general diabetes patients. However, research comparing differences in diabetes self-management behaviors and the factors influencing them between these groups is lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare self-management behaviors, guided by the information-motivation-behavior model, between cancer survivors with diabetes and general diabetes patients. In addition, we aimed to identify differences in factors such as diabetes knowledge, attitudes, family support, and self-efficacy that may influence diabetes self-management behaviors in both groups. METHODS: A total of 125 cancer survivors with diabetes and 126 general diabetes patients participated in this cross-sectional study. A structured questionnaire assessed demographics, diabetes knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and self-management behaviors. RESULTS: Regarding diabetes education, 47.0% of cancer survivors and 61.6% of general diabetes patients received education. The cancer survivors had lower diabetes knowledge scores (10.30 ± 4.15, P < .001), a lower perceived value of strict blood glucose control (4.10 ± 0.56, P < .001), and less family support (15.50 ± 7.50, P = .019) than the patients without cancer (13.51 ± 3.84, 4.25 ± 0.65, and 17.57 ± 6.40, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study reveals significant differences in diabetes self-management between cancer survivors and general diabetes patients. Cancer survivors showed lower diabetes knowledge, glucose control perception, and family support. These findings highlight the need for tailored self-management programs for cancer survivors. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study offers insights for developing tailored diabetes self-management programs and educational interventions for cancer survivors.

In addition to cellular damage, ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury induces substantial damage to the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. In this study, we sought to determine whether impaired mitochondrial function owing to IR could be restored by transplanting mitochondria into the heart under ex vivo IR states. Additionally, we aimed to provide preliminary results to inform therapeutic options for ischemic heart disease (IHD). Healthy mitochondria isolated from autologous gluteus maximus muscle were transplanted into the hearts of Sprague-Dawley rats damaged by IR using the Langendorff system, and the heart rate and oxygen consumption capacity of the mitochondria were measured to confirm whether heart function was restored. In addition, relative expression levels were measured to identify the genes related to IR injury. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption capacity was found to be lower in the IR group than in the group that underwent mitochondrial transplantation after IR injury (p < 0.05), and the control group showed a tendency toward increased oxygen consumption capacity compared with the IR group. Among the genes related to fatty acid metabolism, Cpt1b (p < 0.05) and Fads1 (p < 0.01) showed significant expression in the following order: IR group, IR + transplantation group, and control group. These results suggest that mitochondrial transplantation protects the heart from IR damage and may be feasible as a therapeutic option for IHD.

Natural phytochemicals are well known to protect against numerous metabolic disorders. Anthocyanins are vacuolar pigments belonging to the parent class of flavonoids. They are well known for their potent antioxidant and gut microbiome-modulating properties, primarily responsible for minimizing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and several other diseases associated with metabolic syndromes. Berries are the primary source of anthocyanin in the diet. The color and stability of anthocyanins are substantially influenced by external environmental conditions, constraining their applications in foods. Furthermore, the significantly low bioavailability of anthocyanins greatly diminishes the extent of the actual health benefits linked to these bioactive compounds. Multiple strategies have been successfully developed and utilized to enhance the stability and bioavailability of anthocyanins. This review provides a comprehensive view of the recent advancements in chemistry, biosynthesis, dietary sources, stabilization, bioavailability, industrial applications, and health benefits of anthocyanins. Finally, we summarize the prospects and challenges of applications of anthocyanin in foods.
