RESUMO

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: To assess if a history of repeated implantation failure (RIF) or local endometrial injury (LEI) for RIF affects the pregnancy course in women who conceived in the subsequent in vitro fertilization (IVF)-embryo/blastocyst transfer (ET/BT) cycle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 42 pregnant women with a history of three consecutive failed ET/BT cycles with negative pregnancy tests, 11 patients had a clinical pregnancy in the immediate subsequent ET/BT cycle following (the RIF group), whereas 31 patients had a clinical pregnancy in the subsequent ET/BT cycle following single curettage LEI in the proliferative phase of the preceding spontaneous cycle (the RIF/LEI group). Information on the obstetric complications were retrieved from medical records and compared with that of women who had a live birth in the first ET/BT attempt (the control group). Results: The clinical pregnancy rate, ongoing pregnancy rate, and live birth rate were significantly higher in the RIF/LEI group than in the RIF group (p < 0.010). There were no significant differences in the incidence of pregnancy of unknown location, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, premature rupture of the membranes, placenta previa, placental abruption, preeclampsia, pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction, caesarean section, and blood transfusion were similar between the three groups (p > 0.31). CONCLUSION: In this pilot survey, neither a history of RIF nor LEI intervention for RIF increased the incidence of obstetric complications in the women who conceived in the subsequent ET/BT cycle.

RESUMO

Contrast enhancement by refraction was used to visualize tumours in the rabbit lung. VX2 tumour cells were intravenously injected into a rabbit. After 14 days the rabbit was euthanized and the lungs were imaged. Refraction-enhanced X-ray images were obtained with a sample-to-detector distance of 2.65-6m. The beamline BL20B2 at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility was used for the experiment, with a monochromatic X-ray beam with an energy of 33.2 keV. In the case of projection images, it was found that refraction did not help visualization of small tumours: the nodules did not show up with sharply defined edges. In tomography, tumours with a size of 1-10mm were clearly visualized, together with blood vessels with a diameter down to 0.4mm. These results show that refraction-enhanced imaging may be useful in human lung tomography to find small tumours.

RESUMO

The case occurs on an 86-year-old man. In May 1977, Miles' operation was performed for rectal cancer (papillary tubular adenocarcinoma), together with additional proctostomy. In March 1984, subtotal gastrectomy was performed for an early stomach cancer (moderately-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma). In September 1985, chemotherapy with 3 courses of CDDP (50 mg x 1) plus VDS (3 mg x 3) and liniac irradiation (60 Gy in total) were performed for pulmonary large cell carcinoma. Restiform shadows and fibrosed foci were left behind, but thereafter only the former was persisted without anticancer therapy. Now in December 1989, he has still been surviving without any sign of local recurrence of remote metastasis. Neither anticancer therapy was tried for the first and second cancers nor a cancer family history was found about him.

RESUMO

We studied whether the antinociceptive effect produced by intracerebroventricular injection of delta-sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) to mice involved the monoaminergic pathways that descended from brainstem to spinal cord (the descending inhibitory systems). In the tail-pinch test, the antinociceptive effect of DSIP was significantly reduced by the pretreatment with reserpine (3 mg/kg i.p.) which depleted endogenous monoamines. Moreover, the intrathecal injections of monoamine antagonists were performed to evaluate the roles of the spinal noradrenergic and/or serotonergic systems in the production of the DSIP antinociception. In both tail-pinch and hot plate tests, the antinociceptive effect of DSIP was significantly antagonized by the previous intrathecal administration of phentolamine (an alpha-adrenergic blocker) or yohimbine (an alpha 2-adrenergic blocker), but was unaffected by the pretreatment with methysergide (a serotonin antagonist). These results demonstrate that the activation of the descending inhibitory systems, mainly spinal noradrenergic systems, is involved in the elicitation of DSIP antinociception.

RESUMO

A highly radioresistant bacterium was isolated from the faeces of a giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). When the organism was subjected to gamma irradiation in phosphate buffer, the induction dose and D10 values were 846 and 345 krad, respectively, for cells grown on PCNZ agar, and 700 and 460 krad, respectively, for the enlarged cells grown on 5% (v/v) horse blood brain heart infusion agar. The D10 value of the former cells was about 1.8 times higher than that of Micrococcus radiodurans grown on PCNZ agar.
