RESUMO

In addition to widely known stochastic mutation effects, radiation also induces qualitatively different threshold (nonstochastic) changes that influence the genome but are not conditioned by mutations. The main characteristics of these changes are: spasmodic occurrence in virtually 100% of cells; independence of radiation dose (with regard to the degree of manifestation); low inducing doses; absence of repair throughout the indefinitely large number of cell generations; nonspecificity to mutagen agents, etc. The occurrence of the above changes among objects of different organization is demonstrated and the necessity of taking them into account in estimating a radiation danger is indicated.

RESUMO

One of the main lines of research pursued in the Department is concerned with the assessment of the contribution of small doses of ionizing radiation to the development of some features of a number of somatic and infectious diseases in persons exposed to ionizing radiation. For this purpose, combined clinicolaboratory investigation of this group of patients and some organizational and methodological measures are proposed for the optimization of their follow-up.

RESUMO

The method of the estimation of interaction between two harmful effects based on the statistical survival rate data is discussed. In terms of the competitive risk model, an independent effect was defined as a product of survival functions corresponding to an isolated effect of each injurious factor. The proposed method is based on the comparison between the animals' lifetimes in the case of the isolated effects and the actual survival rates after the combined radiation effect. The comparison of the two alternatives was made by the regression model of Cox adapted for the purposes of this study.
