RESUMO

Detection of rotavirus by electron microscopy was conducted with fecal specimens from 1,722 infants and young children with acute diarrhea, during a 41-month survey from April 1978 through December 1981 in Guayaquil, Ecuador; 376 of these specimens (21.8%) were positive. The detection rate was higher during the dry season (May to November; 25.2%) than during the rainy season (December to April; 14.7%). When rotaviruses isolated from 59 patients hospitalized with diarrhea (from April 1979 to July 1981) were subjected to genome RNA analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, a single dominant electropherotype was found with other less common electropherotypes. An atypical rotavirus with a unique property was also found.

RESUMO

One strain of atypical rotavirus, morphologically indistinguishable from known rotaviruses but lacking the common group antigen of typical rotavirus detectable by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), was isolated from one of 152 Ecuadorian infants with acute rotavirus gastroenteritis. The genome analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed a unique RNA pattern clearly distinct from that of typical rotaviruses.

RESUMO

Electron microscopic examination of stools of 702 infants and young children hospitalized in the Emergency Service of the Alejandro Mann Children's Hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador, between August 1978 and October 1979 showed rotavirus to be present in 148 (21.1%). During the study period rotavirus was detected throughout the year, with no distinct seasonal variation. In addition to rotavirus, adenovirus was detected in stools of five (0.7%) of the patients and unidentified small round virus particles in seven (1.0%).

RESUMO

The sequence of antibody production to various virus-specific antigens in CMV infection in infancy was studied. In healthy infants, IgG EA antibody was demonstrated in 18% of cord sera, and disappeared within two months after birth in all cases not shedding virus. The nonmaternal EA antibody was produced following virus excretion and decreased rapidly following cessation of virus excretion. Thus, demonstration of EA antibody in infants after 2 months of age was found to indicate acquired CMV infection, even when CMV could not be isolated. IgM MA antibody did not persist as long as EA antibody, disappearing before cessation of virus excretion. Both IgG EA and IgM MA antibodies were more frequently demonstrated in infants with hepatitis than in healthy infants. These findings suggest the possible association of CMV with hepatitis in infants.
