RESUMO

The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the accuracy and inter-observer reliability of MRI in detection of local recurrence (LR) of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC) after surgery, which was proved by PET-CT and access correlation between functional MRI and PET parameters. Forty-five patients who underwent PET-CT and MRI for follow-up purposes after radical operation of PAC were included. Twenty-three were PET positive (study group) and 22 negative for LR (control group). MR examination was performed within one month after PET-CT and three readers who were blind for PET-CT findings searched LR in T2W, 3D-dynamic post-contrast T1W-FS and DWI sequences, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated while inter-reader agreement was estimated by Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient (CARC). Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of LR was correlated with the size (maximal diameter) and functional PET-CT parameters: mean and maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmean, SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG), using Spearman's correlation coefficient (rS). Sensitivity and specificity among three readers in detecting the LR were 70% and 77-84% in T2W (CARC 0.806), 91-100% and 100% in 3D post-contrast T1W-FS (CARC 0.980), and both 100% in DWI sequences (CARC 1.000). Moderate inverse correlation was found between the ADC and SUVmean (rS = - 0.484), MTV (rS = - 0.494), TLG (rS = - 0.519) and lesion size (rS = - 0.567). MRI with DWI shows high diagnostic accuracy in detecting the LR of PAC in comparison to PET-CT as reference standard. ADC significantly inversely correlates with standard and advanced PET parameters and size of LR.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) on the male endocrine system of Zucker Diabetic Fatty (ZDF) rats. Sexually mature ZDF rats were divided to a lean (control) and obese group, and had diabetes confirmed by blood tests. For the in vivo experiment, fasting blood was collected to obtain blood plasma. In case of the in vitro experiments, testicular fragments were cultured for 24 h, and the culture medium was collected. The concentrations of testosterone (T), androstenedione (A4), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA-S), estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were quantified in the blood plasma and the medium by the ELISA method, while cholesterol (CHOL) was assessed spectrophotometrically. A significant decline of T (36.31 %), A4 (25.11 %) and FSH (26.99 %) as well as a significant increase of CHOL and E2 (36.17 %) was observed in the blood plasma of obese ZDF rats in comparison to the control. Under in vitro conditions, a significant decrease of FSH (23.35 %) accompanied by an increase of E2 was observed in the obese group compared to the control. In the case of CHOL, LH, T, DHEA and A4 no significant differences were observed. Our results suggest that except for FSH and E2 all steroid biomolecules were synthetized normally by the testicular tissue, however a dramatic endocrine disturbance was observed at the system level. We may conclude that DM2 has negative effects on systemic hormone secretion and these alterations are more pronounced in combination with obesity.

The development of full superconducting motors for electric distributed aircraft propulsion requires to test the stator coils at the operation temperature, usually between 20 and 40 K. Here, we study the AC loss of a test racetrack coil made of REBCO tape. We developed a measurement system within a non-metallic cryostat where a cryocooler cools the test coil in combination with liquid or solid nitrogen. We present transport AC loss measurements by electrical means down to 25 K for current amplitudes up to 140 A and frequency 18-576 Hz. The AC loss increased with second power with current, and did not depend on frequency or temperature. Later, we measured the AC parallel magnetization loss in a stack of tapes made of the same material as the coil, and in a stack of tapes without superconducting layer. The results in both samples is almost identical and presents the same behavior as the coil. We conclude that the main contribution to the AC loss in the tape stack and in the coil was from the magnetism of the Hastelloy substrate or buffer layers. Therefore, researchers need to take this into account in tape production and in superconducting motor design.

BACKGROUND: The cause of gynecological tumors is multifactorial. Risk factors include higher BMI and lack of physical activity. Gynecological oncological diseases are associated with loss of function due to the pathophysiological effects of the disease, treatment, and also mental stress in patients. These problems lead to greater rehabilitation demand of patients. Rehabilitation aims to help the patient to achieve the best possible level of functional status, to foster independence, to improve acceptance of the disease, to improve patient fatigue and improve the quality of life of the patients It is essential to focus the rehabilitation examination on several factors associated with impaired function, such as impaired cardiovascular and pulmonary function, urinary incontinence or psychological or psychological distress. The pleiotropic effect of rehabilitation can also be used in pain relief, improvement of chemotherapy tolerance, in the treatment of lymphedema and in the improvement of pelvic floor muscle function. PURPOSE: The main aim of this paper is to summarize available options for rehabilitation after gynecological oncological diseases.

We present results from an analysis of all data taken by the BICEP2, Keck Array, and BICEP3 CMB polarization experiments up to and including the 2018 observing season. We add additional Keck Array observations at 220 GHz and BICEP3 observations at 95 GHz to the previous 95/150/220 GHz dataset. The Q/U maps now reach depths of 2.8, 2.8, and 8.8 µK_{CMB} arcmin at 95, 150, and 220 GHz, respectively, over an effective area of ≈600 square degrees at 95 GHz and ≈400 square degrees at 150 and 220 GHz. The 220 GHz maps now achieve a signal-to-noise ratio on polarized dust emission exceeding that of Planck at 353 GHz. We take auto- and cross-spectra between these maps and publicly available WMAP and Planck maps at frequencies from 23 to 353 GHz and evaluate the joint likelihood of the spectra versus a multicomponent model of lensed ΛCDM+r+dust+synchrotron+noise. The foreground model has seven parameters, and no longer requires a prior on the frequency spectral index of the dust emission taken from measurements on other regions of the sky. This model is an adequate description of the data at the current noise levels. The likelihood analysis yields the constraint r_{0.05}<0.036 at 95% confidence. Running maximum likelihood search on simulations we obtain unbiased results and find that σ(r)=0.009. These are the strongest constraints to date on primordial gravitational waves.

Liver stiffness (LS) is a novel non-invasive parameter widely used in clinical hepatology. LS correlates with liver fibrosis stage in non-cirrhotic patients. In cirrhotic patients it also shows good correlation with Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient (HVPG). Our aim was to assess the contribution of liver fibrosis and portal hypertension to LS in patients with advanced liver cirrhosis. Eighty-one liver transplant candidates with liver cirrhosis of various aetiologies underwent direct HVPG and LS measurement by 2D shear-wave elastography (Aixplorer Multiwave, Supersonic Imagine, France). Liver collagen content was assessed in the explanted liver as collagen proportionate area (CPA) and hydroxyproline content (HP). The studied cohort included predominantly patients with Child-Pugh class B and C (63/81, 77.8%), minority of patients were Child-Pugh A (18/81, 22.2%). LS showed the best correlation with HVPG (r=0.719, p< 0.001), correlation of LS with CPA (r=0.441, p< 0.001) and HP/Amino Acids (r=0.414, p< 0.001) was weaker. Both variables expressing liver collagen content showed good correlation with each other (r=0.574, p<0.001). Multiple linear regression identified the strongest association between LS and HVPG (p < 0.0001) and weaker association of LS with CPA (p = 0.01883). Stepwise modelling showed minimal increase in r2 after addition of CPA to HVPG (0.5073 vs. 0.5513). The derived formula expressing LS value formation is: LS = 2.48 + (1.29 x HVPG) + (0.26 x CPA). We conclude that LS is determined predominantly by HVPG in patients with advanced liver cirrhosis whereas contribution of liver collagen content is relatively low.

We present two prescriptions for broadband ($ {\sim} 77 - 252\;{\rm GHz} $), millimeter-wave antireflection coatings for cryogenic, sintered polycrystalline aluminum oxide optics: one for large-format (700 mm diameter) planar and plano-convex elements, the other for densely packed arrays of quasi-optical elements-in our case, 5 mm diameter half-spheres (called "lenslets"). The coatings comprise three layers of commercially available, polytetrafluoroethylene-based, dielectric sheet material. The lenslet coating is molded to fit the 150 mm diameter arrays directly, while the large-diameter lenses are coated using a tiled approach. We review the fabrication processes for both prescriptions, then discuss laboratory measurements of their transmittance and reflectance. In addition, we present the inferred refractive indices and loss tangents for the coating materials and the aluminum oxide substrate. We find that at 150 GHz and 300 K the large-format coating sample achieves $ (97 \pm 2)\% $ transmittance, and the lenslet coating sample achieves $ (94 \pm 3)\% $ transmittance.

Multifunctional nanoparticulate systems, especially those used in medicine, are currently of great interest. In this work, the in-vitro anticancer activity of As4S4/Fe3O4 composites dispersed in a water solution of Poloxamer 407 on breast MCF-7 and tongue SCC-25 cancer cells was verified. An increase in apoptotic cells as a consequence of higher caspase activities, a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and an accumulation of cells in the G2/M and subG0/G1 phases were detected after treatment with the As4S4/Fe3O4 nanosuspensions. The sterically stabilized nanosuspensions were characterized in relation to their particle size distribution, zeta potential and long-term stability properties. The interaction between the solid and liquid phases of the nanosuspensions was also studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic (RACPC) has become an important means of assessing patients who present with ischaemic or ischaemia-like symptoms of recent onset. Observations have shown that up to 70% are discharged with a diagnosis of non-anginal chest pain (NACP) and accordingly "reassured". This study aims to describe the actual clinical outcomes of this cohort of patients discharged from the RACPC. METHODS: We undertook a single centre retrospective cohort study at a tertiary cardiac hospital. The outcomes of unselected patients diagnosed with NACP and discharged from the RACPC between April 2010 and March 2013 at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) were recorded. Re-referrals to cardiology outpatient clinic and emergency hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease within 6 months, and the mortality rate at 12 months, were determined. RESULTS: 7066 patients were seen in the UHL RACPC during the 36-month period. 3253 (46.0%) were diagnosed with NACP and discharged. 7 (0.2%) were diagnosed with coronary artery disease (CAD) and 8 (0.25%) cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) identified during the review period. 11 (0.3%) patients died within 12 months of discharge from RACPC. No deaths were attributable to CAD. CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive assessment using risk-stratification criteria in a nurse practitioner-led RACPC can accurately identify patients who are at low-risk for subsequent CAD. Despite contemporary National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines that shift focus away from a clinical judgement based approach, this strategy appears to robustly predict favourable outcomes in patients diagnosed with NACP.

CONTEXT: Defining the underlying etiology of idiopathic short stature (ISS) improves the overall management of an individual. OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of pathogenic ACAN variants in selected individuals. DESIGN: The single-center cohort study was conducted at a tertiary university children's hospital. From 51 unrelated patients with ISS, the 16 probands aged between 3 and 18 years (12 females) with advanced bone age and/or autosomal dominant inheritance pattern of short stature were selected for the study. Fifteen family members of ACAN-positive probands were included. Exome sequencing was performed in all probands, and additional copy number variation (CNV) detection was applied in selected probands with a distinct ACAN-associated phenotype. RESULTS: Systematic phenotyping of the study cohort yielded 37.5% (6/16) ACAN-positive probands, with all novel pathogenic variants, including a 6.082 kb large intragenic deletion, detected by array comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH) and exome data analysis. All variants were co-segregated with short stature phenotype, except in one family member with the intragenic deletion who had an unexpected growth pattern within the normal range (-0.5 SDS). One patient presented with otosclerosis, a sign not previously associated with aggrecanopathy. CONCLUSIONS: ACAN pathogenic variants presented a common cause of familial ISS. The selection criteria used in our study were suggested for a personalized approach to genetic testing of the ACAN gene in clinical practice. Our results expanded the number of pathogenic ACAN variants, including the first intragenic deletion, and suggested CNV evaluation in patients with typical clinical features of aggrecanopathy as reasonable. Intra-familial phenotypic variability in growth patterns should be considered.

PURPOSE: To explore individual variations in visibility of the fat planes between the pancreatic parenchyma and adjacent organs and blood vessels using the multi-detector-computed tomography (MDCT). METHODS: Abdominal contrast-enhanced MDCT examinations of 520 consecutive adult individuals were retrospectively analysed by exploring the presence of visible fat planes between the healthy pancreas and the following surrounding structures: stomach, descending duodenum (D2), splenic, portal, superior mesenteric vein (SV, PV, SMV), inferior vena cava (IVC), and coeliac trunk, common hepatic and superior mesenteric artery (CT, HA and SMA). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rS) was used to assess the correlation of individual gender, age, body mass and BMI, and visible fat planes towards particular surrounding structures. RESULTS: Fat planes between the pancreatic parenchyma and surrounding structures was visible as follows: stomach in 76%, D2 11.7%, SV 51.5%, PV 0%, SMV 28.8%, IVC 80.8%, CT 99.4%, HA 90.4% and SMA in 100% participants. The presence of visible fat planes significantly correlated (p < 0.001) with body mass for stomach (rS = 0.367), D2 (rS = 0.247), SV (rS = 0.355), SMV (rS = 0.384) and IVC (rS = 0.259); BMI for stomach (rS = 0.292), SV (rS = 0.248), SMV (rS = 0.290) and IVC (rS = 0.216); age for D2 (rS = 0.363), SV (rS = 0.276) and SMV (rS = 0.409); and male gender for stomach (rS = 0.160) and SV (rS = 0.198). CONCLUSION: Fat planes around the pancreatic parenchyma in the MDCT scan was almost always visible towards the adjacent magistral visceral arteries and IVC, always invisible towards the PV, and variably visible towards the SV, SMV, stomach and duodenum depending on the individual body mass, BMI, age and gender.

This includes the first Keck Array observations at 220 GHz and additional observations at 95 and 150 GHz. The Q and U maps reach depths of 5.2, 2.9, and 26 µK_{CMB} arcmin at 95, 150, and 220 GHz, respectively, over an effective area of ≈400 square degrees. The 220 GHz maps achieve a signal to noise on polarized dust emission approximately equal to that of Planck at 353 GHz. We take auto and cross spectra between these maps and publicly available WMAP and Planck maps at frequencies from 23 to 353 GHz. We evaluate the joint likelihood of the spectra versus a multicomponent model of lensed-ΛCDM+r+dust+synchrotron+noise. The foreground model has seven parameters, and we impose priors on some of these using external information from Planck and WMAP derived from larger regions of sky. The model is shown to be an adequate description of the data at the current noise levels. The likelihood analysis yields the constraint r_{0.05}<0.07 at 95% confidence, which tightens to r_{0.05}<0.06 in conjunction with Planck temperature measurements and other data. The lensing signal is detected at 8.8σ significance. Running a maximum likelihood search on simulations we obtain unbiased results and find that σ(r)=0.020. These are the strongest constraints to date on primordial gravitational waves.

Actually, MgB2 is the lightest superconducting compound. Its connection with lightweight metals like Ti (as barrier) and Al (as outer sheath) would result in a superconducting wire with the minimal mass. However, pure Al is mechanically soft metal to be used in drawn or rolled composite wires, especially if applied for the outer sheath, where it cannot provide the required densification of the boron powder inside. This study reports on a lightweight MgB2 wire sheathed with aluminum stabilized by nano-sized γ-Al2O3 particles (named HITEMAL) and protected against the reaction with magnesium by Ti diffusion barrier. Electrical and mechanical properties of single-core MgB2/Ti/HITEMAL wire made by internal magnesium diffusion (IMD) into boron were studied at low temperatures. It was found that the ultra-lightweight MgB2 wire exhibited high critical current densities and also tolerances to mechanical stress. This predetermines the potential use of such lightweight superconducting wires for aviation and space applications, and for powerful offshore wind generators, where reducing the mass of the system is required.

Campylobacter jejuni is among the most prevalent causes of human bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Domesticated animals and, especially, chicken meat are considered to be the main sources of infections. However, the contribution of surface waters and wildlife in C. jejuni transmission to humans is not well understood. We have evaluated the source attribution potential of a six-gene multiplex PCR (mPCR) method coupled with STRUCTURE analysis on a set of 410 C. jejuni strains isolated from environment, livestock, food and humans in central Europe. Multiplex PCR fingerprints were analysed using Subclade prediction algorithm to classify them into six distinct mPCR clades. A subset of C. jejuni isolates (70%) was characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) demonstrating 74% congruence between mPCR and MLST. The correspondence analysis of mPCR clades and sources of isolation indicated three distinct groups in the studied C. jejuni population-the first one associated with isolates from poultry, the second one with isolates from cattle, and the third one with isolates from the environment. The STRUCTURE analysis attributed 7.2% and 21.7% of human isolates to environmental sources based on MLST and mPCR fingerprints, respectively.

OBJECTIVES: The liver-specific miR-122 was proposed as biomarker for NAFLD in adults. Here, we investigated the relationship between miR-122 levels, parameters of liver metabolism and NAFLD in pre-pubertal obese children. METHODS: Parameters of liver metabolism (ALT, AST and GGT) of three European cohorts were included (German cohort [n = 71; age: 11.53 ± 1.29 years; BMI z-score: 2.96 ± 0.64], Italian cohort [n = 45; age: 9.60 ± 2.11 years; BMI z-score: 3.57 ± 1.16], Slovenian cohort [n = 31; age: 7.53 ± 1.47 years; BMI z-score: 3.66 ± 0.88]). MiR-122 levels and CK18 concentrations were measured in fasting blood samples. In the German and Italian cohort, the diagnosis of NAFLD and grading of NAFLD was assessed by ultrasound. RESULTS: NAFLD was diagnosed in n = 50 patients of the German cohort (29.6%) and in n = 29 patients (72.5%) of the Italian cohort. In all three cohorts, miR-122 was positively correlated with ALT and AST as well as with CK18 concentrations. MiR-122 levels were higher in children with NAFLD compared with healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: MiR-122 levels in pre-pubertal obese children could be a potential biomarker for paediatric NAFLD.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we witnessed great progress in the discovery of genetic variants associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), especially in adults. Much less is known regarding genetic variants associated with insulin resistance (IR). We hypothesized that novel IR genes could be efficiently detected in a population of obese children and adolescents who may not exhibit comorbidities and other confounding factors. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether a genome-wide association study (GWAS), using a DNA-pooling approach, could identify novel genes associated with IR. SUBJECTS: The pooled-DNA GWAS analysis included Slovenian obese children and adolescents with and without IR matched for body mass index, gender and age. A replication study was conducted in another independent cohort with or without IR. METHODS: For the pooled-DNA GWAS, we used HumanOmni5-Quad SNP array (Illumina). Allele frequency distributions were compared with modified t-tests and χ2-tests and ranked using PLINK. Top single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were validated using individual genotyping by high-resolution melting analysis and TaqMan assay. RESULTS: We identified five top-ranking SNPs from the pooled-DNA GWAS analysis within the ECE1, IL1R2, GNPDA1, HLA-J and PYGB loci. All except SNP rs9261108 (HLA-J locus) were confirmed in the validation phase using individual genotyping. The SNP rs2258617 within PYGB remained statistically significant for both recessive and additive models in both cohorts and in a merged analysis of both cohorts and present the strongest novel candidate gene for IR. CONCLUSION: We report for the first time a pooled-DNA GWAS approach to identify five novel SNPs or genes for IR in a paediatric population. The four loci confirmed in the second validation phase study warrant further studies, especially the strongest SNP rs2258617 within PYGB, and provide targets for further basic research of IR mechanisms and for the development of potential new IR and T2D therapies.

PURPOSE: The study aim was to report diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in treatment of a patient with cervical dysplasia and con- genital uterine anomaly. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old women with Müllerian anomaly - uterus duplex (bicorporal septate uterus) and Y-shaped endocervical canal was referred due to repeated abnormal Pap smears. She underwent endocervical curettage of both canals and the endocervical septum biopsy which revealed presence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) III. Cervical conization was considered technically unfeasible because of abnormal cervical anatomy (lesions deep in the cervical canal on the cervical bifurcation where the cervical wall is the thickest). Classical open abdominal hysterectomy was performed. Patient had two almost equally-sized, symmetrical uterine bodies connected in the isthmico-cervical region, with normal left and obstructed right hemi-vagina. Postoperative histopathological findings confirmed that dysplasia was located in the region where two endocervical canals conjoined. CONCLUSION: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with uterine anomalies has to be individualized, based on anomaly type, patient's age, reproductive history, and patient's preferences.

RESUMO

We show that gold decorated MoS2 flakes are amenable to thiol chemistry by blending them with a cross-linkable thiolated polysiloxane (PMMS). PMMS prevents restacking of dispersed MoS2 when transforming the metallic to the semiconducting phase. Cross-linking PMMS yields an elastomer of good optical quality, containing individual, mostly single-layer MoS2 flakes.

We present results from an analysis of all data taken by the BICEP2 and Keck Array cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments up to and including the 2014 observing season. This includes the first Keck Array observations at 95 GHz. The maps reach a depth of 50 nK deg in Stokes Q and U in the 150 GHz band and 127 nK deg in the 95 GHz band. We take auto- and cross-spectra between these maps and publicly available maps from WMAP and Planck at frequencies from 23 to 353 GHz. An excess over lensed ΛCDM is detected at modest significance in the 95×150 BB spectrum, and is consistent with the dust contribution expected from our previous work. No significant evidence for synchrotron emission is found in spectra such as 23×95, or for correlation between the dust and synchrotron sky patterns in spectra such as 23×353. We take the likelihood of all the spectra for a multicomponent model including lensed ΛCDM, dust, synchrotron, and a possible contribution from inflationary gravitational waves (as parametrized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio r) using priors on the frequency spectral behaviors of dust and synchrotron emission from previous analyses of WMAP and Planck data in other regions of the sky. This analysis yields an upper limit r_{0.05}<0.09 at 95% confidence, which is robust to variations explored in analysis and priors. Combining these B-mode results with the (more model-dependent) constraints from Planck analysis of CMB temperature plus baryon acoustic oscillations and other data yields a combined limit r_{0.05}<0.07 at 95% confidence. These are the strongest constraints to date on inflationary gravitational waves.

The aim of this study was to reveal phenotype/genotype characteristics of verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) and multidrug resistant E. coli in food products of animal origin confiscated as illegal import at Austrian, German and Slovenian airports. VTEC isolates were obtained by using ISO guidelines 16654:2001 for O157 VTEC or ISO/ TS13136:2012 for non-O157 VTEC, with additional use of the RIDASCREEN® Verotoxin immunoassay. The testing of 1526 samples resulted in 15 VTEC isolates (1.0%) primarily isolated from hard cheese from Turkey and Balkan countries. Genotyping for virulence by using a miniaturized microarray identified a wide range of virulence determinants. One VTEC isolate (O26:H46) possessing intimin (eae) and all other essential genes of Locus of Enterocyte Effacement (LEE) was designated as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). None of the other VTEC strains belonged to serogroups O157, O145, O111, O104 or O103. VTEC strains harbored either stx(1) (variants stx1(a) or stx(1c)) or st(x2) (variants stx(2a), stx(2b), stx(2a/d) or stx(2c/d)) genes. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) demonstrated high genetic diversity and identified three new sequence types (STs): 4505, 4506 and 4507. Food samples collected from the Vienna airport were also tested for E. coli quantities using the ISO 16649:2001, and for detection of multidrug resistant phenotypes and genotypes. The resulting 113 commensal E. coli isolates were first tested in a pre-screening against 6 selected antimicrobials to demonstrate multidrug resistance. The resulting 14 multidrug resistant (MDR) E. coli isolates, representing 0.9% of the samples, were subjected to further resistance phenotyping and to microarray analyses targeting genetic markers of antimicrobial resistance and virulence. Genotyping revealed various combinations of resistance determinants as well as the presence of class 1, class 2 integrons. The isolates harbored 6 to 11 antibiotic resistance genes as well as 1 to 14 virulence genes. In this panel of 14 MDR E. coli two strains proved to carry CTX-M type ESBLs, and one single isolate was identified as enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). In general, isolates carrying a high number of resistance determinants had lower number of virulence genes and vice versa. In conclusion, this first pilot study on the prevalence of VTEC and of MDR/ESBL E. coli in illegally imported food products of animal origin suggests that these strains could represent reservoirs for dissemination of potentially new types of pathogenic and MDR E. coli in Europe.
