Background and Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major global cause of death. Effective secondary prevention is crucial, involving risk factor modification and cardiac rehabilitation. However, mental factors, particularly depression, exert a significant influence on CVD outcomes by increasing cardiovascular risk and impeding treatment adherence. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the impact of psychological state on the effectiveness of rehabilitation in cardiac patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty-three patients referred for cardiac rehabilitation participated in a 3-week program, retrospectively categorized into two groups: those with and without depressive symptoms. The functional status of the patients was assessed using the R.A.M.P. protocol exercise test, conducted on a treadmill, during which resting and exercise heart rate (HR), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, and metabolic equivalent of task (MET) measurements were taken. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) were utilized to evaluate the patients' psychological state. Stepwise regression explored the psychological factors explaining physiological parameter variance. Results: Participants without depressive symptoms exhibited significantly greater improvements in exercise HR (15.58 vs. 1.07; p = 0.02), exercise SBP (7.93 vs. -2.05; p = 0.05), and exercise METs (1.52 vs. 0.50; p = 0.006) compared to those with depressive symptoms. The following predictors were found to be significant: for exercise HR-HADS-D (r2 = 12%; p = 0.04); for exercise DBP-PSS-10 (r2 = 27%; p = 0.002); and for METs-HADS-D and age (r2 = 26%; p = 0.01). Conclusions: In conclusion, cardiac rehabilitation improved psychological and physiological parameters in both groups, with greater effectiveness seen in those without depression. Depressive symptoms predicted exercise HR, SBP, and METs, highlighting their role in worsening cardiac disease. Emphasizing psychological factors, including depression and stress, in cardiac rehabilitation can enhance effectiveness and patient outcomes.

The interfacial polycondensation of titanium dioxide was studied at the bare and fiberglass membrane supported polarized liquid-liquid interface (LLI). Titanium dioxide synthesis was derived from the titanium (IV) tetrabutoxide (initially dissolved in the 1,2-dichloroethane) interfacial hydrolysis followed by its condensation. Experimental parameters, such as the pH of the aqueous phase and the influence of titanium alkoxide concentration in the organic phase on the electrochemical signal and material morphology, were investigated. The latter was achieved with fiberglass membranes used as the LLI support during TiO2 interfacial deposition. Cyclic voltammetry was used for the in situ studies, whereas scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy were used during ex situ examination. The interfacial polycondensation reaction could be studied using electrified LLI and resulted in the material being a TiO2 film alone or film decorated with particles.

This work is focused on the electroanalytical study of a family of five imidazolium-terminated carbosilane dendrimers (from generation G1 to G3) at the polarized liquid-liquid interface formed between water and 1,2-dichloroethane solutions. All dendrimers with permanently and positively charged imidazolium groups located at the periphery within the branched carbosilane core were found to be electrochemically active. Based on the concentration and scan rate dependencies we have concluded that these molecules undergo interfacial ion transfer processes accompanied by interfacial adsorption/desorption rather than the electrochemically induced interfacial formation of the macromolecule-anion (tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate) from the organic phase complex. Also, we report several physicochemical and electroanalytical parameters (e.g. diffusion coefficients, LODs, and detection sensitivities) for the studied family of dendrimers. Our work aims to contribute to the understating of the interaction between branched macromolecules and biomimetic interfaces.

Cobitis species exist in both diploid and diploid-polyploid (d-p) populations, but mostly occur in the latter. They are considered an important model organism to study the biology and physiology of natural hybrid and polyploid vertebrates. Indeed, polyploidization causes a huge stress for in terms of cell physiology and alters spermatogenesis in polyploid fish. The most extensively studied mode of germ cell death during spermatogenesis in vertebrates is apoptosis. The aim of this study was to examine caspase-3 immunoexpression in the testes of Cobitis taenia from a diploid population as well as C. taenia and sterile tetraploid Cobitis from d-p populations before, during and after spawning. The obtained results suggest a different performance of apoptosis in the testes of C. taenia from the two studied populations and seems to be conditioned by their role as the only sperm donors in d-p populations. Moreover, apoptosis was an active cell death process in the testes of tetraploid Cobitis.

Phosphorylation of proteins is an essential signalling mechanism in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Although N-phosphorylation of basic amino acid is known for its importance in biological systems, it is still poorly explored in terms of products and mechanisms. In the present study, two MS fragmentation methods, ECD (electron-capture dissociation) and CID (collision-induced dissociation), were tested as tools for analysis of N-phosphorylation of three model peptides, RKRSRAE, RKRARKE and PLSRTLSVAAKK. The peptides were phosphorylated by reaction with monopotassium phosphoramidate. The results were confirmed by 1H NMR and 31P NMR studies. The ECD method was found useful for the localization of phosphorylation sites in unstable lysine-phosphorylated peptides. Its main advantage is a significant reduction of the neutral losses related to the phosphoramidate moiety. Moreover, the results indicate that the ECD-MS may be useful for analysis of regioselectivity of the N-phosphorylation reaction. Stabilities of the obtained lysine-phosphorylated peptides under various conditions were also tested.

High-pressure denaturation of proteins can provide important information concerning their folding and function. These studies require expensive and complicated equipment. In this paper, we present a new convenient method for studying high-pressure denaturation of proteins combining DHX (deuterium-hydrogen exchange) and electrospray ionization MS. Application of various values of pressure causes different degrees of protein unfolding resulting in molecules with a different number of protons available for exchange with deuterons. After decompression a protein refolds and a certain number of deuterons are trapped within the hydrophobic core of a refolded protein. Redissolving the deuterated protein in an aqueous buffer initiates the DHX of amides located on the protein surface only, which can be monitored under atmospheric pressure by MS. Depending on the degree of deuteration after high-pressure treatment, the DHX kinetics are different and indicate how many deuterons were trapped in the protein after refolding. The dependence of this number on pressure gives information on the denaturation state of a protein. The distribution of deuterium along the sequence of a high-pressure-denatured protein was studied the ECD (electron-capture-induced dissociation) on a Fourier-transform mass spectrometer, enabling the monitoring of high-pressure denaturation with single amino acid resolution.
