[Prevalence if giardiasis in Volgograd city population]. / Rasprostranennost' liamblioza sredi zhitelei goroda Volgograda.

Analyzing many year's data on the prevalence of giardiasis among Volgograd dwellers indicated that the five-year infectivity index did not substantially change and it was 6.3 +/- 0.4%. The rate of Giardia lamblia isolation was higher in healthy individuals in the high-loaded environmental topodemic regions of the city than in those in the good ones. Over 50% of all the cases of giardiasis were recorded among 7-15-year-old children, the proportion of preschool children was much less (31.9%). The rate of giardiasis detection in children who went to children's preschool facilities was twice higher than that in the unorganized population. The focality index was 6.8%, which is indicative of the low contagiousness of the disease.

[Ecological ranging of the Volgograd territory on the basis of Staphylococcus aureus resident carrier state determination]. / Ekologicheskoe ranzhirovanie territorii goroda Volgograda na osnove opredeleniia rezidentnogo bakterionositel'stva Staphylococcus aureus.

The evaluation of S. aureus resident carrier state on the nasal mucosa among school children showed that its intensity was determined by the ecological factors in the place of residence. Under favorable conditions of the central part of the city the level of S. aureus carrier state was 25.4 +/- 3.1%, while in the northern and southern parts of the city, where most of major metallurgical and chemical plants are situated, these values were 44.4 +/- 4.2% and 45.9 +/- 1.6%. The calculation of the factor of staphylococcal resident carrier state (FSRCS), i.e. the ratio of the carrier state levels in the ecologically favorable (control) zone and in the zone under study, revealed that the FSRCS values in the northern and southern zones were 1.81 and 1.74. Thus the ecological situation could be regarded as critical in none of the districts of Volgograd. The levels of S. aureus resident carrier state were highly correlated to the degree of air pollution, evaluated by the factor of total air pollution, and upper respiratory tract diseases in children. The level of S. aureus resident carrier state may be used as a marker in the ecological ranging of the city territories.

[The intestinal microenvironment in healthy persons under the technogenic action of an industrial city]. / Mikroékologiia kishechnika zdorovykh liudei v usloviiakh tekhnogennogo vozdeistviia krupnogo promyshlennogo goroda.

The intestinal microflora was studied in 806 healthy persons residing in three different environmental areas of the city of Volgograd. The study indicated that there were qualitative and quantitative differences in its composition, the heterogenicity of microbiocenosis being due to the degree of ambient air pollution. The changed found allowed four cenotypes (normal variants) of the microflora to be identified in urban residents. As the technogenic burden was ascertained to increase on the population, there was a rise in the incidence of atypical variants of the microflora, which were detectable at a rate of 30.6% in the ecologically good central area whereas their rates were 63.3 and 74.9% in both a northern and a southern areas where the basic enterprises of chemical and metallurgic industries are located.
