RESUMO

Bioaerosols are potential sources of pathogenic microorganisms that can cause devastating outbreaks of global crop diseases. Various microorganisms, insects and viroids are known to cause severe crop diseases impeding global agro-economy. Such losses threaten global food security, as it is estimated that almost 821 million people are underfed due to global crisis in food production. It is estimated that global population would reach 10 billion by 2050. Hence, it is imperative to substantially increase global food production to about 60% more than the existing levels. To meet the increasing demand, it is essential to control crop diseases and increase yield. Better understanding of the dispersive nature of bioaerosols, seasonal variations, regional diversity and load would enable in formulating improved strategies to control disease severity, onset and spread. Further, insights on regional and global bioaerosol composition and dissemination would help in predicting and preventing endemic and epidemic outbreaks of crop diseases. Advanced knowledge of the factors influencing disease onset and progress, mechanism of pathogen attachment and penetration, dispersal of pathogens, life cycle and the mode of infection, aid the development and implementation of species-specific and region-specific preventive strategies to control crop diseases. Intriguingly, development of R gene-mediated resistant varieties has shown promising results in controlling crop diseases. Forthcoming studies on the development of an appropriately stacked R gene with a wide range of resistance to crop diseases would enable proper management and yield. The article reviews various aspects of pathogenic bioaerosols, pathogen invasion and infestation, crop diseases and yield.

Agarwood, popularly known as oudh or gaharu, is a fragrant resinous wood of high commercial value, traded worldwide and primarily used for its distinctive fragrance in incense, perfumes, and medicine. This fragrant wood is created when Aquilaria trees are wounded and infected by fungi, producing resin as a defense mechanism. The depletion of natural agarwood caused by overharvesting amidst increasing demand has caused this fragrant defensive resin of endangered Aquilaria to become a rare and valuable commodity. Given that instances of natural infection are quite low, artificial induction, including biological inoculation, is being conducted to induce agarwood formation. A long-term investigation could unravel insights contributing toward Aquilaria being sustainably cultivated. This review will look at the different methods of induction, including physical, chemical, and biological, and compare the production, yield, and quality of such treatments with naturally formed agarwood. Pharmaceutical properties and medicinal benefits of fragrance-associated compounds such as chromones and terpenoids are also discussed.

Coronaviruses are single stranded RNA viruses usually present in bats (reservoir hosts), and are generally lethal, highly transmissible, and pathogenic viruses causing sever morbidity and mortality rates in human. Several animals including civets, camels, etc. have been identified as intermediate hosts enabling effective recombination of these viruses to emerge as new virulent and pathogenic strains. Among the seven known human coronaviruses SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) have evolved as severe pathogenic forms infecting the human respiratory tract. About 8096 cases and 774 deaths were reported worldwide with the SARS-CoV infection during year 2002; 2229 cases and 791 deaths were reported for the MERS-CoV that emerged during 2012. Recently ~ 33,849,737 cases and 1,012,742 deaths (data as on 30 Sep 2020) were reported from the recent evolver SARS-CoV-2 infection. Studies on epidemiology and pathogenicity have shown that the viral spread was potentially caused by the contact route especially through the droplets, aerosols, and contaminated fomites. Genomic studies have confirmed the role of the viral spike protein in virulence and pathogenicity. They target the respiratory tract of the human causing severe progressive pneumonia affecting other organs like central nervous system in case of SARS-CoV, severe renal failure in MERS-CoV, and multi-organ failure in SARS-CoV-2. Herein, with respect to current awareness and role of coronaviruses in global public health, we review the various factors involving the origin, evolution, and transmission including the genetic variations observed, epidemiology, and pathogenicity of the three potential coronaviruses variants SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and 2019-nCoV.

Agricultural waste being the major solid waste in the environment, the study has explored and identified the presence of minerals especially silica in the agricultural waste like sugarcane bagasse ash and rice husk ash by carbonization on combustion at different thermal conditions and biodegradation. Presence of silica in the ash samples has been well characterized by the XRD, FT-IR, EDX, SEM and N2 sorption techniques. Presence of crystal phases of silica like quartz and cristoballite is well indexed by the X-ray diffraction peaks that appeared at 2θ = 27, 40 and 60 which is further confirmed by the peaks at 1100, 820 and 620 cm(-1) of FT-IR. The elemental composition of the silica in ash is determined by EDX analysis. The exothermic reaction and the mass loss observed in the TG/DTG at the transient temperature of 840-850 °C has confirmed the presence of the α-quartz. SEM micrograph has also supported the presence of silica and has revealed the various crystal shapes that were present in the sugarcane and husk ash. The study has clearly revealed that the silica content has increased with the increase in temperature and refinement of the combustion condition to a maximum of 18.7-52 % and on biodegradation to about 48.3-92.4 %.

The biological transformation of lignocellulose of Achras zapota by white rot fungi, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, in solid state fermentation (SSF) was studied for 28 days. The kinetic transformation of lignocellulose was monitored through the determination of acid soluble and acid insoluble lignin content, total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The lignolytic enzymes, lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) were quantified on weekly intervals. The degradation of lignin and other structural moieties of A. zapota lignocellulose were confirmed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The degradation of lignin was increased after 7 days of fermentation with the release of water soluble and fermentable products. The LiP and MnP activities were increased in the first week of SSF and lignin degradation was also set to increase. This was accompanied with increase in COD by 94.6% and TOC by 80% and lignin content was decreased by 76%. The maximum activities of the enzymes LiP and MnP in extracellular fluid of SSF under nitrogen limitation, at pH 5.0, at temperature 37 degrees C and at 60% humidity were 2100 U/L and 1200 U/L.
