RESUMO

The utilization of essential oils as natural antioxidants and preservatives is limited by high volatility, poor water solubility, and long-term instability. To address this, a novel ultrasonic-assisted method was used to prepare and stabilize a nanoemulsion of turmeric essential oil-in-water, incorporating bioactive components extracted from Spirulina platensis. Ultrasonic treatment enhanced the extraction efficacy and nanoemulsion stability. Algal biomass subjected to ultrasonic treatment (30 min at 80% amplitude) yielded a dry extract of 73.66 ± 3.05%, with the highest protein, phenolic, phycocyanin, and allophycocyanin content, as well as maximum emulsifying activity. The resulting nanoemulsion (5% oil, 0.3% extract, 10 min ultrasonic treatment) showed reduced particle size (173.31 ± 2.24 nm), zeta potential (-36.33 ± 1.10 mV), low polydispersity index, and enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Rheology analysis indicated shear-thinning behavior, while microscopy and spectroscopy confirmed structural changes induced by ultrasonic treatment and extract concentration. This initiative developed a novel ultrasonic-assisted algal-based nanoemulsion with antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

RESUMO

In this study, computational fluid dynamics were employed to examined clockwise and anticlockwise vortexes in the rising and down coming sections of novel nested-bottle photobioreactor. The radial velocity was increased by four times which significantly reduced dead zones compared to traditional PBR. The (NB-PBR) comprised of integrated bottles connected by curved tubes (d = 4 cm) that generated dominant vortices as the microalgae solution flows through each section (h = 10 cm). The (NB-PBR) was independent of the inner and outer sections which increased the mixing time and mass-transfer coefficient by 13.33 % and 42.9 %, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicated that the (NB-PBR) showed higher photosynthesis efficiency preventing self-shading and photo-inhibition, resulting in an increase in biomass yield and carbon dioxide fixation by 35 % and 35.9 %, respectively.

RESUMO

This study is aimed at understanding the serious foaming problems during microalgal cultivation in industrial raceway ponds by studying the dynamic foam properties in Arthrospira platensis cultivation. A. platensis was cultivated in a 4 L bowl bioreactor for 4 days, during which the foam height above the algal solution increased from 0 to 30 mm with a bubble diameter of 1.8 mm, and biomass yield reached 1.5 g/L. The algal solution surface tension decreased from 55 to 45 mN/m, which favored the adsorption of microalgae on the bubble to generate more stable foams. This resulted in increased foam stability (FS) from 1 to 10 s, foam capacity (FC) from 0.3 to 1.2, foam expansion (FE) from 15 to 43, and foam maximum density (FMD) from 0.02 to 0.07. These results show a decrease in CO2 flow rate and operation temperature when using the Foamscan instrument, which minimized the foaming phenomenon in algal solutions to a significantly lower and acceptable level.

RESUMO

In toluene at 50 °C, the vinyl addition polymerization of 4-vinyl-cyclohexene (VCH) comonomers with ethylene is investigated using symmetrical metallocene (rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2) combined with borate/TIBA. To demonstrate the polymerizations' living character, cyclic VCH with linear-exocyclicπ and endocyclicπ bonds produces monomodal polymers, but the dispersity (Ɖ) was broader. The copolymers obtained can be dissolved in conventional organic solvent and have excellent thermal stability and crystalline temperature (ΔHm), and their melting temperature (Tm) varies from 109 to 126 °C, and ΔHm ranges from 80 to 128 (J/g). Secondly, the distribution of polymeric catalysts engaged in polymer chain synthesis and the nature of the dormant state are two of the most essential yet fundamentally unknown aspects. Comprehensive and exhaustive kinetics of E/VCH have shown numerous different kinetic aspects that are interpreted as manifestations of polymeric catalysts or of the instability of several types of active center [Zr]/[C*] fluctuations and formation rates of chain propagation RpE, RpVCH, and propagation rate constants kpE and kpVCH, the quantitative relationship between RpE, RpVCH and kpE, kpVCH and catalyst structures, their constituent polymer Mw, and their reactivity response to the endocyclic and exocyclic bonds of VCH. The kinetic parameters RpE, RpVCH, kpE, and kpVCH, which are the apparent rates for the metallocene-catalyzed E/VCH, RpE, and kpE values, are much more significant than RpVCH and kpVCH at 120 s, RpE and RpVCH 39.63 and 0.78, and the kpE and kpVCH values are 6461 and 93 L/mol·s, respectively, and minor diffusion barriers are recommended in the early stages. Compared with previously reported PE, RpE and kpE values are 34.2 and 7080 L/mol·s. VCH increases the RpE in the initial stage, as we are expecting; this means that the exocyclic bond of VCH is more active at the initial level, and that the chain transfer reaction of cyclic internal π double is increased with the reaction time. The tp versus Rp, kp, and [Zr]/[C*] fraction count may be fitted to a model that invokes deactivation of growing polymer chains. At tp 120-360 s higher, the incorporation rate of VCH suppresses E insertion, resulting in reduced molecular weight.

RESUMO

The weak magnetic field (MF) intervention on the semi-continuous system of filamentous algae Tribonema sp. during outdoor cultivation was investigated using starch wastewater. Results show that except for winter, MF in other seasons can effectively improve the algal biomass yield and oil productivity. In summer, the biomass concentration and oil productivity of Tribonema sp. could reach up to 14.7 g/L and 0.216 g/(L d) (130 mT), which increased by 9.8% and 35.8% respectively compared with the control group without MF intervention. By continuously shortening HRT to increase the nutrient load, the removal rate of COD, total nitrogen and total phosphorus all reached more than 87.9%. MF intervention not only weakened the bacterial diversity in open-photobioreactors system but also proved to be beneficial to the establishment of bacteria-algae symbiotic system. As a non-transgenic method, MF effectively up-regulated the growth of filamentous microalgae and promoted the biosynthesis productivity of high value-added compounds.

RESUMO

A staggered woven mesh (SWM) aerator equipped with three variable-micropore layers was developed to enhance the CO2 conversion into HCO3- in a recycling water pipeline for promoting CO2 utilization efficiency and Arthrospira growth in large-scale raceway ponds. The input CO2 gas was broken into smaller bubbles (0.78- 2.43 mm) through the first-stage shear with axial rectangles, second-stage shear with radial rectangles (equivalent pore diameter = 150 µm), and third-stage shear with uniform micropores. A high-speed camera (MotionXtra HG-100K CMOS) and an Image J image processing software were employed to capture the bubble pictures. Compared to the traditional steel pipe (TSP) aerator, the bubble generation diameter and time in the SWM aerator reduced by 72.3% and 48.6%, respectively. The optimized structure (ε = 14, pore = 23 µm) of the SWM aerator promoted the carbonization efficiency and HCO3- conversion efficiency into biomass by 78.6% and 64.6% than the TSP aerator. Further, the chlorophyll fluorescence and biomass measurements showed an increase in the actual photochemical efficiency (analyzed by Hansatech FMS1 chlorophyll fluorescence instrument) and biomass yield by 1.8 times and 80.1%.

RESUMO

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have unparalleled advantages in the preparation of nanocomposites for various applications. However, a major challenge associated with CNCs in nanocomposite preparation is the lack of compatibility with hydrophobic polymers. The hydrophobic modification of CNCs has attracted increasing interest in the modern era standing with long challenges and being environmentally friendly. Here, we synthesized CNCs by using cotton as raw material and then modified them with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate to improve their corresponding mechanical, adhesive, contact angle, and thermal properties. Different concentrations (1-5 wt%) of CNCs were used as modifiers to improve the interfacial adhesion between the reinforced CNCs and E-51 (Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether) epoxy resin system. CNCs offered a better modulus of elasticity, a lower coefficient of energy, and thermal expansion. Compared with the standard sample, the modified CNCs (MCNCs) showed high shear stress, high toughness, efficient degradation, thermal stability, and recycling due to the combined effect of the hyperbranched topological structure of epoxy with good compatibility. The native CNCs lost their hydrophilicity after modification with epoxy, and MCNCs showed good hydrophobic behavior (CA = 105 ± 2°). The findings of this study indicate that modification of CNCs with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate in the presence of epoxy resin and the enhancement of the features would further expand their applications to different sectors.

RESUMO

In this study, the Tesla-valve (TV) baffles were used to optimize the flow field in a column photobioreactor (PBR) in order to promote mass transfer of CO2 gas in the solution. The TV baffles were composed of many tilted plates with central holes and curved arcs facing downwards, installed along inner rising section of the column PBR. Many clockwise and anti-clockwise vortices were generated during the rising flow while passing through proposed TV baffles. An optimum TV baffle structure (30° plate angle, 8 cm arc width) decreased mixing time by 36.4% and increased the mass transfer coefficient by 50%. The TV baffles supported the movement of the A.platensis cells between light and dark regions to enhance their photochemical efficiency ϕPSII by 24.6% and Fv/Fm by 12.7%. Therefore, the biomass yield increased by 28.1% and exhibited an increased helix pitch and trichome length in comparison with traditional column PBR without baffles.
