RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most prevalent monogenic renal disease, responsible for 10% of the patients on renal replacement therapy, including kidney transplantation. Recently, it was reported that the serum CA 19-9 level is significantly elevated in ADPKD patients without malignancy. Exclusion of malignancy, including tumor marker analysis, is essential in pretransplant evaluation, as well as in assessment of kidney transplantation recipients. METHODS: In this study the serum CA 19-9 level in ADPKD patients without malignancy was retrospectively analyzed. The mean level of CA 19-9 was 30.3 U/mL (0.8 U/L-612 U/L). RESULTS: Overall, in 24 patients (18.8%) the serum CA 19-9 level was increased above the normal level found in the general population (35 U/L), and 5 of them (4.2%) did not experience polycystic liver disease. In 4 patients (3.4%) CA 19-9 level was increased 2-fold above the norm and in 3 of them (2.5%) 3-fold over the norm and higher. A statistically significant negative correlation between serum CA 19-9 level and estimated glomerular filtration rate, both in patients with and without hepatic cysts was observed. In nearly 1 in 5 patients with ADPKD, serum CA 19-9 level should be expected to be above the norm found in the general population, despite the lack of coexistence of a tumor or cholangitis. CONCLUSION: This finding should be considered during transplantation qualification and in follow-up examination after kidney transplantation.

RESUMO

Nanomaterials represent a rapidly expanding area of research with huge potential for future medical applications. Nanotechnology indeed promises to revolutionize diagnostics, drug delivery, gene therapy, and many other areas of research. For any biological investigation involving nanomaterials, it is crucial to study the behavior of such nano-objects within tissues to evaluate both their efficacy and their toxicity. Here, we provide the first account of 3D label-free nanoparticle imaging at the entire-organ scale. The technology used is known as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and possesses several advantages such as speed of operation, ease of use and full compatibility with optical microscopy. We then used two different but complementary approaches to achieve 3D elemental imaging with LIBS: a volume reconstruction of a sliced organ and in-depth analysis. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the quantitative imaging of both endogenous and exogenous elements within entire organs and paves the way for innumerable applications.

RESUMO

An example of the subtle interplay between the intended templation and a very fast reequilibration of a dynamic combinatorial library of imines that occurs upon a solvent change is reported. Such seemingly "irrelevant" details of the procedure like imine dissolution time prior to reduction may dictate the outcome of the whole reaction.

RESUMO

We argue that the recent LHCb observation of J/ψ-pair production indicates a significant contribution from double parton scattering, in addition to the standard single parton scattering component. We propose a method to measure the double parton scattering at LHCb using leptonic final states from the decay of two prompt J/ψ mesons.

RESUMO

Although there is growing interest in silver promoted carbon-carbon bond formation, a key challenge in developing robust and reliable organosilver reagents is that thermal and photochemical decomposition reactions can compete with the desired coupling reaction. These undesirable reactions have been poorly understood due to complications arising from factors such as solvent effects and aggregation. Here the unimolecular decomposition reactions of organosilver cations, RAg(2)(+), where R = methyl (Me) and phenyl (Ph), are examined in the gas phase using a combination of mass spectrometry based experiments and theoretical calculations to explore differences between thermal and photochemical decompositions. Under collision-induced dissociation conditions, which mimic thermal decomposition, both PhAg(2)(+) and MeAg(2)(+) fragment via formation of Ag(+). The new ionic products, RAg(+•) and Ag(2)(+•), which arise via bond homolysis, are observed when RAg(2)(+) is subject to photolysis using a UV-vis tunable laser OPO. Furthermore, comparisons between the theoretical and experimental UV-vis spectra allow us to unambiguously determine the most stable structures of PhAg(2)(+) and MeAg(2)(+) and to identify the central role of the silver part in the optical absorption of these species. The new photoproducts result from fragmentation in electronic excited states. In particular, potential energy surface calculations together with the fragment charges highlight the role of triplet states in these new fragmentation schemes.

RESUMO

We study the effect of soft gluon emission in the hadroproduction of squark-antisquark and gluino-gluino pairs at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices controlling the color evolution of the underlying hard-scattering processes are calculated. We present the resummed total cross sections and show numerical results for proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV. For the gluino-pair production, the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation is reduced to the few-percent level.

RESUMO

The addition of allyltrimethylsilane to chiral N-tosylimine derived from (1R)-8-phenylmenthyl glyoxylate is discussed. Various Lewis acids were applied in order to postulate the stereochemical model for this type of nucleophilic addition.

RESUMO

The results of treatment in patients with very advanced renovascular hypertension are presented. The patients were divided into two groups. In group one were patients with only one kidney and renovascular hypertension. The risk of operation and special precautions are discussed. Group two included patients with kidney non-function due to renal artery occlusion and severe hypertension. All these patients were candidates for nephrectomy. During the operation in some of them, the technical possibilities for vascular reconstruction were found. Instead of nephrectomy aortorenal bypasses were done.

RESUMO

The authors report early results of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty of renal arteries in 28 patients. This method of treatment of renovascular hypertension is applicable in certain cases, mostly in patients with fibromuscular hyperplasia and in arteriosclerotic renal artery disease. Early good and very good hypotensive results were obtained in 27 cases (96.4%).
