RESUMO

Introduction: Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) have remained an unresolved public health problem in India. In this survey, we have estimated the prevalence of IDD among 6-12 years of school children in rural areas of north Karnataka, India and estimated the prevalence of low iodine content (<15 ppm) in salt at the household level and urine iodine excretion in this population. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, we recruited 16,827 children between 6 and 12 years of age through multistage sampling from six districts. Goitre was examined clinically for all children. Household-level salt iodine estimation and urinary iodine estimation were carried out among a subset of the participants. Results: Overall prevalence of goitre was 17.1% (95% CI: 16.5, 17.7). Out of this, 76.7% (n = 2116) had Grade-1 goitre, and 23.7% (n = 656) had Grade-2 goitre. The prevalence of goitre was higher among females (17.9%, vs. male 16.4%, P < 0.05). The prevalence of low iodine content (<15 ppm) in salt was 48.5% (95%CI: 46.7, 50.3). The overall median iodine excretion in urine was 85 µg/L (IQR: 60-150 µg/L). In total, 37.2% (n = 601) had mild iodine deficiency, 5.2% (n = 84) had moderate deficiency, and 10.1% (n = 163) had severe deficiency. All parameters showed high inter- and intradistrict variations. Conclusion: North Karnataka has a high goitre prevalence. Low use of iodized salt can be a major reason for the high prevalence of the condition. Ensuring the availability of iodized salt in this region and periodic surveillance to measure the impact of the programme should be the priority in this region.

RESUMO

Coronavirus disease has taken a toll on everyone's lives either physically or emotionally throughout the world. One of the most serious complications occurring currently in covid-positive and recovered patients is the deadly invasive mucormycosis. There are five clinical types of mucormycosis, out of which rhino-orbito-cerebral is the most common form (44%-49%). Management includes early diagnosis, control of the underlying diseases, and aggressive medical and surgical intervention. In patients undergoing maxillectomies, the use of immediate surgical obturators has become the gold standard. The rationale for its use is threefold-functional (matrix for the surgical dressing; allows the patient to speak and swallow), hygienic (separates the maxillary surgical site from contents of the oral cavity), and psychological (restores patient's self-image by reproducing lost oral structure). This article includes two case reports of patients diagnosed with rhinocerebral mucormycosis. The surgical debridement, medical management, and immediate reconstruction using palatal obturators have been explained.

RESUMO

Mapping the environment of a vehicle and localizing a vehicle within that unknown environment are complex issues. Although many approaches based on various types of sensory inputs and computational concepts have been successfully utilized for ground robot localization, there is difficulty in localizing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) due to variation in altitude and motion dynamics. This paper proposes a robust and efficient indoor mapping and localization solution for a UAV integrated with low-cost Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. Considering the advantage of the typical geometric structure of indoor environments, the planar position of UAVs can be efficiently calculated from a point-to-point scan matching algorithm using measurements from a horizontally scanning primary LiDAR. The altitude of the UAV with respect to the floor can be estimated accurately using a vertically scanning secondary LiDAR scanner, which is mounted orthogonally to the primary LiDAR. Furthermore, a Kalman filter is used to derive the 3D position by fusing primary and secondary LiDAR data. Additionally, this work presents a novel method for its application in the real-time classification of a pipeline in an indoor map by integrating the proposed navigation approach. Classification of the pipeline is based on the pipe radius estimation considering the region of interest (ROI) and the typical angle. The ROI is selected by finding the nearest neighbors of the selected seed point in the pipeline point cloud, and the typical angle is estimated with the directional histogram. Experimental results are provided to determine the feasibility of the proposed navigation system and its integration with real-time application in industrial plant engineering.

RESUMO

The management of tooth wear is complex and challenging as it involves multidisciplinary approach. Proper diagnosis and elaborative treatment protocol is necessary to obtain successful and predictable outcome. The objective of full mouth rehabilitation includes identification of the cause, prevention and preservation of the remaining tooth structure. This case report presents the management of the remaining teeth by endodontic and periodontic intervention which was followed by porcelain fused to metal fixed prosthesis, telescopic denture for the upper missing teeth and extra-coronal attachments for the lower missing teeth. Segmental arch technique was utilized for the rehabilitation where anterior teeth were restored first followed by the posterior teeth. Patient had a satisfactory functional and aesthetic results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to compare the retention between sectional border molding using low fusing greenstick compound and single step border molding using condensation silicone (putty) impression material in three stages- A. Immediately following border molding, B. After final impression and C. With the finished permanent denture base. MATERIALS & METHODS: In this study evaluation of retentive values of sectional border molding (Group I) (custom impression trays border molded with green stick compound ) and single step border molding (Group II) ( border molding with condensation silicone (putty) impression material ). In both techniques definitive wash impression were made with light body condensation silicone and permanent denture base with heat cure polymerization resin. RESULTS: Group II was significantly higher (mean=8011.43) than Group I (mean=5777.43) in test-A. The t-value (1.5883) infers that there was significant difference between Group I and Group II (p =0.15). Group I was significantly higher (mean=6718.57) than Group II (mean=5224.29) in test -B. The t-value (1.6909) infers that there was significant difference between Group I and Group II (p=0.17). Group II was higher (mean=4025.14) than Group I (mean=3835.07) in test -C. The t-value was 0.1239. But it was found to be statistically insignificant (p=0.005). CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of this clinical study border molding custom tray with low fusing green stick compound provided similar retention as compared to custom impression tray with condensation silicone in permanent denture base. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To promote oral health among the elderly, we need to know their prosthetic status and prosthetic need. Hence, a survey of prosthetic status and need of elderly inmates of geriatric homes in Hyderabad was done. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken, and 174 subjects aged 60 years and above were examined of which 103 were male and 71 were female (59.2% males and 40.8% females). The oral examination of the study subjects was carried out using basic oral health surveys, WHO 1997 criteria. RESULTS: Majority of the subjects, 73 (70.8%) males and 53 (74.6%) females had no prosthesis. Only 4.6% had complete dentures and 21.1% had removable partial dentures and 10.9% had single/multiple bridges. Need for any prosthesis was (83.5%) male and 63 (88.7%) female subjects and nearly 82. 8% subjects required one-unit prosthesis. CONCLUSION: Dental prosthetic status of people living in geriatric homes is very poor and there is high unmet need for prosthetic care existed among the institutionalized elderly surveyed.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the shear bond strength of three different pits and fssure sealants to enamel namely, Delton, Clinpro and Z350 Filtek fowable composite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety permanent molars were divided into three groups of 30 each. Their proximal surfaces were prepared and stored in 37°C ± 5°C normal saline for 24 hours. Sealant buttons were prepared. The specimens were tested in a shear mode (Lloyds LR100K) at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The mean and standard deviations were subjected to an analysis of variance. RESULTS: The mean shear bond strength of samples of Delton was 10.33 MPa; Clinpro was 8.51 MPa and Z350 Filtek fowable was 12.17 MPa. The mean strength of Delton was signifcantly higher as compared to Clinpro whereas the mean strength of Z350 Filtek was signifcantly higher as compared to Delton and Clinpro (Student t-test, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Z350 Filtek fowable composite had maximum shear bond strength than Delton FS sealant followed by Clinpro sealant. Clinical signifcance: In this study, we compare the bond strength of three pits and fssure sealant, Clinpro yielded lower bond strength than Delton. This outcome can be described due to the presence of fllers in Delton, since these particles increase the resistance of the material to abrasion and also increase the mechanical resistance of the material.
