INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may reflect pathologic changes in brain networks. To date, no studies have examined changes in sleep functional connectivity (FC) in AD or their relationship with network hyperexcitability and cognition. METHODS: We assessed electroencephalogram (EEG) sleep FC in 33 healthy controls, 36 individuals with AD without epilepsy, and 14 individuals with AD and epilepsy. RESULTS: AD participants showed increased gamma connectivity in stage 2 sleep (N2), which was associated with longitudinal cognitive decline. Network hyperexcitability in AD was associated with a distinct sleep connectivity signature, characterized by decreased N2 delta connectivity and reversal of several connectivity changes associated with AD. Machine learning algorithms using sleep connectivity features accurately distinguished diagnostic groups and identified "fast cognitive decliners" among study participants who had AD. DISCUSSION: Our findings reveal changes in sleep functional networks associated with cognitive decline in AD and may have implications for disease monitoring and therapeutic development. HIGHLIGHTS: Brain functional connectivity (FC) in Alzheimer's disease is altered during sleep. Sleep FC measures correlate with cognitive decline in AD. Network hyperexcitability in AD has a distinct sleep connectivity signature.

BACKGROUND: Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) are associated with elevated risk of noncommunicable disease, but little is known about UPF intake and the individual-, household-, and community-level factors associated with it among adolescents in low- or middle-income countries. OBJECTIVES: We estimated the association of UPF intake across adolescence with sociodemographic characteristics and maternal UPF intake in a Filipino cohort. METHODS: Data were from 4 waves (1994-2005) of the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (n = 2068); participants were aged 11, 15, 18, and 21 y. Foods from 24-h recalls were classified using NOVA. We used 2-part multilevel models to estimate time-varying associations of the odds and amount (percentage daily kilocalories) of UPF intake with sociodemographic characteristics and maternal UPF intake (none, below median among UPF-consuming mothers ["low"], at or above median ["high"]). RESULTS: Median UPF intake (interquartile range [IQR]) among adolescents was 7.3% (IQR: 0, 17.2%) of daily kilocalories at age 11 y and 10.6% (IQR: 3.6, 19.6%) at 21 y. The odds and amount of adolescent UPF intake were positively associated with female sex, years of schooling, and household wealth and inversely associated with household size. The odds-but not amount-of adolescent UPF intake was positively associated with maternal education and urbanicity and inversely associated with the distance from a household's primary store/market. The association between odds of adolescent UPF intake and school enrollment was positive in adolescence but disappeared in early adulthood. Compared with offspring whose mothers did not consume UPFs, the odds of UPF intake among those whose mothers had low- or high-UPF intake was greater in adolescence, but there was no association once offspring became adults. At all ages, maternal UPF intake was positively associated with the amount of offspring intake. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent UPF intake varied across sociodemographic characteristics and was positively associated with maternal UPF intake, but not after adolescents entered adulthood.

X-ray nanotomography is a powerful tool for the characterization of nanoscale materials and structures, but it is difficult to implement due to the competing requirements of X-ray flux and spot size. Due to this constraint, state-of-the-art nanotomography is predominantly performed at large synchrotron facilities. We present a laboratory-scale nanotomography instrument that achieves nanoscale spatial resolution while addressing the limitations of conventional tomography tools. The instrument combines the electron beam of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with the precise, broadband X-ray detection of a superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter. The electron beam generates a highly focused X-ray spot on a metal target held micrometers away from the sample of interest, while the TES spectrometer isolates target photons with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This combination of a focused X-ray spot, energy-resolved X-ray detection, and unique system geometry enables nanoscale, element-specific X-ray imaging in a compact footprint. The proof of concept for this approach to X-ray nanotomography is demonstrated by imaging 160 nm features in three dimensions in six layers of a Cu-SiO2 integrated circuit, and a path toward finer resolution and enhanced imaging capabilities is discussed.

BACKGROUND: The LBP-related attitudes and beliefs of clinicians may impact the experience of patients by influencing clinician decision-making and by shaping the attitudes, beliefs, and actions of patients. The purpose of this study was to identify the specific LBP-related attitudes and beliefs of US-based physical therapists and determine if those beliefs correlate with clinical decision-making. METHODS: An electronic survey was sent to US-based physical therapists. Attitudes and beliefs were measured using the Health Care Providers' Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale (HC-PAIRS) and the Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale for Physiotherapists (PABS-PT). The survey also included 2 patient vignettes that collected information about clinical decision-making. RESULTS: Complete survey responses were recorded from 420 physical therapists. Eleven of the 27 attitude and beliefs questions were answered in a more biomedically oriented way by at least 20% of respondents. Physical therapist low back pain-related attitudes and beliefs were associated with activity and management strategies for both vignettes in the expected direction. Higher scores on HC-PAIRS and PABS-BM were associated with more restrictive work and activity recommendations, lower-intensity exercise choices, biomechanical rationale for manual therapy and motor control exercises, pathoanatomical-focused education, and use of modalities. CONCLUSION: Some physical therapists hold biomedically oriented beliefs about the connection between pain and physical activity. Clinician beliefs were associated with activity and work recommendations, and treatment choices. Physical therapists with more biomedically oriented beliefs were more likely to limit physical activity and work, and less likely to incorporate psychologically informed interventions.

Leaf traits are essential for understanding many physiological and ecological processes. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models with leaf spectroscopy are widely applied for trait estimation, but their transferability across space, time, and plant functional types (PFTs) remains unclear. We compiled a novel dataset of paired leaf traits and spectra, with 47 393 records for > 700 species and eight PFTs at 101 globally distributed locations across multiple seasons. Using this dataset, we conducted an unprecedented comprehensive analysis to assess the transferability of PLSR models in estimating leaf traits. While PLSR models demonstrate commendable performance in predicting chlorophyll content, carotenoid, leaf water, and leaf mass per area prediction within their training data space, their efficacy diminishes when extrapolating to new contexts. Specifically, extrapolating to locations, seasons, and PFTs beyond the training data leads to reduced R2 (0.12-0.49, 0.15-0.42, and 0.25-0.56) and increased NRMSE (3.58-18.24%, 6.27-11.55%, and 7.0-33.12%) compared with nonspatial random cross-validation. The results underscore the importance of incorporating greater spectral diversity in model training to boost its transferability. These findings highlight potential errors in estimating leaf traits across large spatial domains, diverse PFTs, and time due to biased validation schemes, and provide guidance for future field sampling strategies and remote sensing applications.

Plant trait data are used to quantify how plants respond to environmental factors and can act as indicators of ecosystem function. Measured trait values are influenced by genetics, trade-offs, competition, environmental conditions, and phenology. These interacting effects on traits are poorly characterized across taxa, and for many traits, measurement protocols are not standardized. As a result, ancillary information about growth and measurement conditions can be highly variable, requiring a flexible data structure. In 2007, the TRY initiative was founded as an integrated database of plant trait data, including ancillary attributes relevant to understanding and interpreting the trait values. The TRY database now integrates around 700 original and collective datasets and has become a central resource of plant trait data. These data are provided in a generic long-table format, where a unique identifier links different trait records and ancillary data measured on the same entity. Due to the high number of trait records, plant taxa, and types of traits and ancillary data released from the TRY database, data preprocessing is necessary but not straightforward. Here, we present the 'rtry' R package, specifically designed to support plant trait data exploration and filtering. By integrating a subset of existing R functions essential for preprocessing, 'rtry' avoids the need for users to navigate the extensive R ecosystem and provides the functions under a consistent syntax. 'rtry' is therefore easy to use even for beginners in R. Notably, 'rtry' does not support data retrieval or analysis; rather, it focuses on the preprocessing tasks to optimize data quality. While 'rtry' primarily targets TRY data, its utility extends to data from other sources, such as the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). The 'rtry' package is available on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN; https://cran.r-project.org/package=rtry) and the GitHub Wiki (https://github.com/MPI-BGC-Functional-Biogeography/rtry/wiki) along with comprehensive documentation and vignettes describing detailed data preprocessing workflows.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), necessitate frequent clinical visits and monitoring to identify changes in motor symptoms and provide appropriate care. By applying machine learning techniques to video data, automated video analysis has emerged as a promising approach to track and analyze motor symptoms, which could facilitate more timely intervention. However, existing solutions often rely on specialized equipment and recording procedures, which limits their usability in unstructured settings like the home. In this study, we developed a method to detect PD symptoms from unstructured videos of clinical assessments, without the need for specialized equipment or recording procedures. METHODS: Twenty-eight individuals with Parkinson's disease completed a video-recorded motor examination that included the finger-to-nose and hand pronation-supination tasks. Clinical staff provided ground truth scores for the level of Parkinsonian symptoms present. For each video, we used a pre-existing model called PIXIE to measure the location of several joints on the person's body and quantify how they were moving. Features derived from the joint angles and trajectories, designed to be robust to recording angle, were then used to train two types of machine-learning classifiers (random forests and support vector machines) to detect the presence of PD symptoms. RESULTS: The support vector machine trained on the finger-to-nose task had an F1 score of 0.93 while the random forest trained on the same task yielded an F1 score of 0.85. The support vector machine and random forest trained on the hand pronation-supination task had F1 scores of 0.20 and 0.33, respectively. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate the feasibility of developing video analysis tools to track motor symptoms across variable perspectives. These tools do not work equally well for all tasks, however. This technology has the potential to overcome barriers to access for many individuals with degenerative neurological diseases like PD, providing them with a more convenient and timely method to monitor symptom progression, without requiring a structured video recording procedure. Ultimately, more frequent and objective home assessments of motor function could enable more precise telehealth optimization of interventions to improve clinical outcomes inside and outside of the clinic.

Surgical procedures, including nerve reconstruction and end-organ muscle reinnervation, have become more prominent in the prosthetic field over the past decade. Primarily developed to increase the functionality of prosthetic limbs, these surgical procedures have also been found to reduce postamputation neuropathic pain. Today, some of these procedures are performed more frequently for the management and prevention of postamputation pain than for prosthetic fitting, indicating a significant need for effective solutions to postamputation pain. One notable emerging procedure in this context is the Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI). RPNI surgery involves an operative approach that entails splitting the nerve end longitudinally into its main fascicles and implanting these fascicles within free denervated and devascularized muscle grafts. The RPNI procedure takes a proactive stance in addressing freshly cut nerve endings, facilitating painful neuroma prevention and treatment by enabling the nerve to regenerate and innervate an end organ, i.e., the free muscle graft. Retrospective studies have shown RPNI's effectiveness in alleviating postamputation pain and preventing the formation of painful neuromas. The increasing frequency of utilization of this approach has also given rise to variations in the technique. This article aims to provide a step-by-step description of the RPNI procedure, which will serve as the standardized procedure employed in an international, randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05009394). In this trial, RPNI is compared to two other surgical procedures for postamputation pain management, specifically, Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) and neuroma excision coupled with intra-muscular transposition and burying.

Scar tissue formation presents a significant barrier to peripheral nerve recovery in clinical practice. While different experimental methods have been described, there is no clinically available gold standard for its prevention. This study aims to determine the potential of fibrin glue (FG) to limit scarring around peripheral nerves. Thirty rats were divided into three groups: glutaraldehyde-induced sciatic nerve injury treated with FG (GA + FG), sciatic nerve injury with no treatment (GA), and no sciatic nerve injury (Sham). Neural regeneration was assessed with weekly measurements of the visual static sciatic index as a parameter for sciatic nerve function across a 12-week period. After 12 weeks, qualitative and quantitative histological analysis of scar tissue formation was performed. Furthermore, histomorphometric analysis and wet muscle weight analysis were performed after the postoperative observation period. The GA + FG group showed a faster functional recovery (6 versus 9 weeks) compared to the GA group. The FG-treated group showed significantly lower perineural scar tissue formation and significantly higher fiber density, myelin thickness, axon thickness, and myelinated fiber thickness than the GA group. A significantly higher wet muscle weight ratio of the tibialis anterior muscle was found in the GA + FG group compared to the GA group. Our results suggest that applying FG to injured nerves is a promising scar tissue prevention strategy associated with improved regeneration both at the microscopic and at the functional level. Our results can serve as a platform for innovation in the field of perineural regeneration with immense clinical potential.

Locus coeruleus (LC) projections to the hippocampus play a critical role in learning and memory. However, the precise timing of LC-hippocampus communication during learning and which LC-derived neurotransmitters are important for memory formation in the hippocampus are currently unknown. Although the LC is typically thought to modulate neural activity via the release of norepinephrine, several recent studies have suggested that it may also release dopamine into the hippocampus and other cortical regions. In some cases, it appears that dopamine release from LC into the hippocampus may be more important for memory than norepinephrine. Here, we extend these data by characterizing the phasic responses of the LC and its projections to the dorsal hippocampus during trace fear conditioning in mice. We find that the LC and its projections to the hippocampus respond to task-relevant stimuli and that amplifying these responses with optogenetic stimulation can enhance long-term memory formation. We also demonstrate that LC activity increases both norepinephrine and dopamine content in the dorsal hippocampus and that the timing of hippocampal dopamine release during trace fear conditioning is similar to the timing of LC activity. Finally, we show that hippocampal dopamine is important for trace fear memory formation, while norepinephrine is not.


Our brains are more likely to remember activities or incidents that stand out from typical day-to-day experiences. For instance, if your phone is stolen on the way to work, you will have a stronger memory of this experience compared to other uneventful commutes. These are known as salient events and can be emotional, surprising, or even just out of the ordinary. During salient events, an area of the brain known as the hippocampus receives chemicals called neuromodulators from other parts of the brain. These neuromodulators enhance the formation of the memory by modifying how neurons connect together in the hippocampus. One of the regions that signals to the hippocampus ­ called the locus coeruleus ­ was thought to enhance memory by releasing the neuromodulator norepinephrine. Recent studies indicate that the locus coeruleus also releases a second neuromodulator called dopamine. However, it remained unclear what causes the locus coeruleus to release dopamine, and what effect this neuromodulator has on the hippocampus. To investigate these questions, Wilmot et al. recorded and manipulated the activity of the locus coeruleus in the brains of mice experiencing salient, fearful events. The mice were exposed to a sound and, a few seconds later, a shock to the foot to illicit the formation of an aversive salient memory. If the next day, the mice responded to just the sound as if they were expecting a shock, this indicated they had remembered the aversive experience. Wilmot et al. observed that neurons in the locus coeruleus were active during the salient event, resulting in increased dopamine in the hippocampus. When the activity of these neurons was forcefully increased during relatively non-salient events, such as a quiet tone and a very mild shock, the animals still showed strong memory formation. Finally, blocking the action of dopamine in the hippocampus substantially affected memory formation, whereas blocking the action of norepinephrine did not have the same effect. These findings suggest that the locus coeruleus enhances the memory of salient events by increasing the levels of dopamine in the hippocampus not norepinephrine, as was previously thought. Developing a better understanding of how the locus coeruleus regulates memory may lead to improved treatments for various neurological disorders, like Alzheimer's disease, which are associated with neuromodulators taking on different roles in the hippocampus.

Background  Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCCDs), such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, are the leading cause of death and disability and the leading driver of healthcare costs in the U.S. It is estimated that 80% of chronic diseases and premature deaths are attributable to modifiable lifestyle factors related to smoking and alcohol intake, poor eating patterns, and physical inactivity. Inadequate sleep also plays a significant role. Among other directives, primary care providers (PCPs) have the opportunity to contribute to preventing and treating NCCD in their patients. Comprehensive, evidence-based behavioral counseling interventions are recommended to PCPs as a first-line approach to improving outcomes. However, presumably due to a lack of PCP time, training or resources, most patients report not receiving such services. Currently, the extent to which PCPs in Alabama offer or refer patients to health behavior change (HBC) services is unknown.  Objectives  This study aims to assess the following: (1) Alabama PCPs' current approaches in facilitating patient HBC in the domains of eating patterns, physical activity, sleep, and stress and (2) the likelihood of the Alabama PCPs referring patients to virtual HBC programs, once developed by an osteopathic medical school in the state.  Methods  Data were collected from clinic personnel who were knowledgeable regarding the clinic's approach to facilitating patient HBC via scripted telephone interviews and online surveys sent via email. The clinic list utilized for the study was derived from a list of VCOM-Auburn clinical preceptors. Primary care and specialty clinics were included. Data were analyzed descriptively to determine the number of clinics that (1) provide, recommend, or refer programs, services, or resources to patients to facilitate HBC related to eating patterns, physical activity, sleep, and stress management and (2) are likely to refer patients to free virtual HBC programs, once developed by an osteopathic medical school in the state. Results  Of the 198 clinics that were contacted, 75 were excluded, 46 were "no response," 53 agreed to participate, and 50 completed the survey. Of the 50 clinics that completed the survey, 33 indicated offering resources or referrals for diet, 29 stated they offered resources or referral services for physical activity, 33 indicated offering resources or referrals for sleep, and 28 indicated offering or recommending resources for stress management to patients. Most of the clinics (29/50) felt that their patients would benefit most from a program that facilitates improvement in eating patterns, and 41/50 clinics said that they are either "somewhat" or "extremely" likely to refer patients to a free VCOM-Auburn HBC program, once available.  Conclusions Findings indicate that a significant percentage of PCP clinics are not offering HBC resources to patients and that most PCP clinics would consider referring patients to free VCOM-Auburn HBC programs, once available. Phone data were significantly different from email data. The primary limitations were a low response rate and potential response bias.

Despite their widespread use as therapeutics, clinical development of small molecule drugs remains challenging. Among the many parameters that undergo optimization during the drug development process, increasing passive cell permeability (i.e., log(P)) can have some of the largest impact on potency. Cyclic peptides (CPs) have emerged as a viable alternative to small molecules, as they retain many of the advantages of small molecules (oral availability, target specificity) while being highly effective at traversing the plasma membrane. However, the relationship between the dominant conformations that typify CPs in an aqueous versus a membrane environment and cell permeability remain poorly characterized. In this study, we have used Gaussian accelerated molecular dynamics (GaMD) simulations to characterize the effect of solvent on the free energy landscape of lariat peptides, a subset of CPs that have recently shown potential for drug development (Kelly et al., JACS 2021). Differences in the free energy of lariat peptides as a function of solvent can be used to predict permeability of these molecules, and our results show that permeability is most greatly influenced by N-methylation and exposure to solvent. Our approach lays the groundwork for using GaMD as a way to virtually screen large libraries of CPs and drive forward development of CP-based therapeutics.

The Lipomyces clade contains oleaginous yeast species with advantageous metabolic features for biochemical and biofuel production. Limited knowledge about the metabolic networks of the species and limited tools for genetic engineering have led to a relatively small amount of research on the microbes. Here, a genome-scale metabolic model (GSM) of Lipomyces starkeyi NRRL Y-11557 was built using orthologous protein mappings to model yeast species. Phenotypic growth assays were used to validate the GSM (66% accuracy) and indicated that NRRL Y-11557 utilized diverse carbohydrates but had more limited catabolism of organic acids. The final GSM contained 2,193 reactions, 1,909 metabolites, and 996 genes and was thus named iLst996. The model contained 96 of the annotated carbohydrate-active enzymes. iLst996 predicted a flux distribution in line with oleaginous yeast measurements and was utilized to predict theoretical lipid yields. Twenty-five other yeasts in the Lipomyces clade were then genome sequenced and annotated. Sixteen of the Lipomyces species had orthologs for more than 97% of the iLst996 genes, demonstrating the usefulness of iLst996 as a broad GSM for Lipomyces metabolism. Pathways that diverged from iLst996 mainly revolved around alternate carbon metabolism, with ortholog groups excluding NRRL Y-11557 annotated to be involved in transport, glycerolipid, and starch metabolism, among others. Overall, this study provides a useful modeling tool and data for analyzing and understanding Lipomyces species metabolism and will assist further engineering efforts in Lipomyces.

Thermochromic materials have found widespread commercial use in packaging as temperature indicators. Often, these products utilize leuco dyes that are mixed into conventional polymeric resins to prepare coatings or films that exhibit temperature-dependent color change. Here, we consider a distinctive approach to thermochromism via the selective reflection of liquid crystalline elastomers that retain the helicoidal structure of the cholesteric phase (CLCEs). Upon heating, the order of the CLCEs reduces and approaches zero, resulting in a change in birefringence as well as material thickness, both of which manifest as changes in the selective reflection to heating. This examination systematically prepares CLCEs capable of reversible thermochromic response as a function of cross-link density and liquid crystalline composition. A particular focus of this examination is the preparation of CLCEs composed of chiral and achiral liquid crystalline monomers that reduce the strength of the mesogen-mesogen interaction and accordingly reduce the nematic-isotropic transition temperature. The low birefringence of some of the CLCE compositions facilitates thermochromic reflection tuning, followed by switching.

OBJECTIVES: Dermal regeneration templates (DRTs) are frequently used to treat scalp defects. The aim was to compare the time course of healing for DRTs in scalp defects with and without preoperative radiation. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of DRT-based scalp reconstruction at 2 academic medical centers between 2013 and 2022. Information was collected on demographic variables, comorbidities, medication use, history of radiation, and DRT outcomes. The primary outcome was DRT loss, defined as exposed calvarium or DRT detachment based on postoperative follow-up documentation. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and multivariable Cox proportional-hazard regressions were used to compare DRT loss in irradiated and nonirradiated defects. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to compare 30-day postoperative complications (infection, hematoma, or seroma) in irradiated and nonirradiated defects. RESULTS: In total, 158 cases were included. Twenty-eight (18%) patients had a preoperative history of radiation to the scalp. The mean follow-up time after DRT placement was 2.6 months (SD: 4.5 mo). The estimated probability of DRT survival at 2 months was 91% (95% CI: 83%-100%) in nonirradiated patients and 65% (95% CI: 48%-88%) in irradiated patients. In the 55 patients with a bony wound base, preoperative head radiation was associated with a higher likelihood of DRT loss (hazard ratio: 11). Half the irradiated defects experienced uncomplicated total wound closure using Integra Wound Matrix Dressing with or without second-stage reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: Dermal regeneration template can offer durable coverage in nonirradiated scalp defects. Although DRT loss is more likely in irradiated scalp defects, successful DRT-based reconstruction is possible in select cases.

OBJECTIVES: Functional testing (FT), commonly used to evaluate dynamic knee function and provide objective information about how well a patient, has progressed in rehabilitation following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The purpose of the study was to determine whether a functional test could be used as an assessment tool for return to activity following isolated meniscus repair. METHODS: The results of FT completed between 80 and 150 days post-operation (representing 4-months post-operative) in isolated meniscal repair patients were analysed for the involved limb, uninvolved limb, and limb symmetry index (LSI). Involved limb performance and LSI on FT were also recorded for a matched cohort of patients who underwent an isolated ACL reconstruction between 151 and 220 days post-operation (representing 6-months post-operative). The meniscus cohort was compared to the ACL cohort. RESULTS: The meniscus cohort (n â€‹= â€‹26) performed well (LSI of 88% or better) on all functional test exercises, including all hop tests. There were patients in the meniscus cohort who did not achieve 90% LSI on the FT at 4 months. There was no statistically significant difference in any of the tests between the meniscus and ACL (n â€‹= â€‹39) cohorts. CONCLUSION: A majority of isolated meniscal repair patients perform well on FT by 4 months post-operatively and similar to patients undergoing isolated ACL reconstruction at 6 months post-operatively. Not all patients performed well on FT at 4 months post-operatively; however so, there may be a role for FT in isolated meniscal repair patients, and those patients may need further physical therapy prior to a return to sports. Sodium sulfate decahydrate (SSD) is a low-cost phase-change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage applications that offers substantial melting enthalpy and a suitable temperature range for near-ambient applications. However, SSD's consistent phase separation with decreased melting enthalpy over repeated thermal cycles limits its application as a PCM. Sulfonated polyelectrolytes, such as dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), have shown great effectiveness in preventing phase separation in SSD. However, there is limited understanding of the stabilization mechanism of SSD by DSS at the atomic length and time scales. In this work, we investigate SSD stabilization via DSS using neutron scattering and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Neutron scattering and pair distribution function analysis revealed the structural evolution of the PCM samples below and above the phase change temperatures. MD simulations revealed that water from the hydrate structure migrates from the hydrate crystal to the SSD-DSS interfacial region upon melting. The water is stabilized at this interface by aggregation around the hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups attached to the backbone of the polyelectrolyte. This architecture retains water near the dehydrated sodium sulfate, preventing phase separation and, consequently, stabilizing SSD rehydration. This work provides atomistic insight into selecting and designing stable and high-performance PCMs for heating and cooling applications in building technologies.

Extracting longitudinal image quantitative data, known as delta-radiomics, has the potential to capture changes in a patient's anatomy throughout the course of radiation treatment for prostate cancer. Some of the major challenges of delta-radiomics studies are contouring the structures for individual fractions and accruing patients' data in an efficient manner. The manual contouring process is often time consuming and would limit the efficiency of accruing larger sample sizes for future studies. The problem is amplified because the contours are often made by highly trained radiation oncologists with limited time to dedicate to research studies of this nature. This work compares the use of automated prostate contours generated using a deformable image-based algorithm to make predictive models of genitourinary and changes in total international prostate symptom score in comparison to manually contours for a cohort of fifty patients. Area under the curve of manual and automated models were compared using the Delong test. This study demonstrated that the delta-radiomics models were similar for both automated and manual delta-radiomics models.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides a concise overview of the recent literature regarding preoperative and postoperative neurocognitive functioning (NCF) in patients with glioma. Brief discussion also covers contemporary intraoperative brain mapping work, with a focus on potential influence of mapping upon NCF outcomes following awake surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Most patients with glioma exhibit preoperative NCF impairment, with severity varying by germ line and tumoral genetics, tumor grade, and lesion location, among other characteristics. Literature regarding postoperative NCF changes is mixed, though numerous studies indicate a majority of patients exhibit immediate and short-term worsening. This is often followed by recovery over several months; however, a substantial portion of patients harbor persisting declines. Decline appears related to surgically-induced structural and functional brain alterations, both local and distal to the tumor and resection cavity. Importantly, NCF decline may be mitigated to some extent by intraoperative brain mapping, including mapping of both language-mediated and nonverbal functions. Research regarding perioperative NCF in patients with glioma has flourished over recent years. While this has increased our understanding of contributors to NCF and risk of decline associated with surgical intervention, more work is needed to better preserve NCF throughout the disease course.
