RESUMO

Three new oleanane-type triterpene saponins, named camphanosides A-C (1-3), along with five known compounds, chikusetsusaponin IVa (4), spinasaponin A 28-O-glucoside (5), (-)-epicatechin (6), (-)-epicatechin 3-O-gallate (7), and (-)-epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate (8) were isolated from the leaves Camellia phanii Hakoda & Ninh. Their structures were established by 1D and 2D-NMR and mass spectral analysis and chemical methods. Moreover, compounds 1-5 were also evaluated for α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Compounds 1-3 exhibited moderate α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 230.7±18.0, 251.4±22.7, and 421.4±25.6 µM, respectively.

A chemical study of the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Achyranthes aspera led to the isolation of four new flavonoid C-glycosides (1-4) along with eight known analogs (5-12). Their structures were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic data analysis, HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra. All the isolates were evaluated their NO production inhibitory activity in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells. Compounds 2, 4, and 8-11 showed significant inhibition with IC50 values ranging from 25.06 to 45.25 µM, compared to that of the positive control compound, L-NMMA, IC50 value of 32.24 µM, whereas the remaining compounds were weak inhibitory activity with IC50 values over 100 µM. This is the first report of 7 from Amaranthaceae family, and 11 from the genus Achyranthes.

In this work, polypyrrole-based nanocomposites doped with graphene oxide, molybdate, and salicylate (PPy/GO/Mo/Sal) were synthesized via in situ electrochemical polymerization to enhance the anti-corrosion protection performance of polymer coatings. The morphology and structures of the coatings were characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. The protection abilities of coatings against corrosion were investigated in 0.1 M NaCl solution with EIS potentiodynamic polarization, salt spray test, and open-circuit potential (OCP) measurements. The results showed that with the presence of both molybdate/salicylate and GO in the PPy matrix, the nanocomposite coating exhibited an excellent protection ability against corrosion for low-carbon steel, better than that with only GO as filler. Compared to the nanocomposites doped with only salicylate or salicylate/GO, the one doped with both molybdate/salicylate and GO exhibited the longest protection plateau (ca. 100 h) on the OCP-time curves with some fluctuation points known as the self-healing action of molybdate dopant. It also resulted in a decrease in the corrosion current (Tafel plots), a higher impedance (Bode plot), and a better protection performance in salt spray tests. In this case, the anti-corrosion ability of the coatings was provided through a barrier and self-healing mechanism.

Phytochemical study on the roots of Achyranthes bidentata Blume led to the isolation of sixteen compounds including three new ones (1-3). Their chemical structures were determined as oleanolic acid 28-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside-3-O-[ß-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-ß-D-galactopyranoside) (1), methyl (8Z,11Z)-5,6,7-trihydroxytetradeca-8,11-dienoate (2), methyl (6E,11Z)-5,8,9-trihydroxytetradeca-6,11-dienoate (3), fulgidic acid (4), (9E,11E)-13-oxooctadeca-9,11-dienoic acid (5), (9Z,11E,15Z)-13-hydroxyoctadeca-9,11,15-trienoic acid (6), oleanolic acid 28-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-ß-D-glucuronopyranoside (7), oleanolic acid 28-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside-3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)]-ß-D-glucuronopyranoside (8), oleanolic acid 3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)]-ß-D-glucuronopyranoside (9), oleanolic acid 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)-ß-D-glucuronopyranoside (10), blumenol C glucoside (11), citroside A (12), 6S,9S-roseoside (13), ginsenoside Rg1 (14), 20-hydroxyecdysone (15), and benzyl α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)]-ß-D-glucopyranoside (16) by spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1, 7 and 11-16 inhibited NO production in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells with IC50 values in the range from 28.03 to 54.23 µM (positive control, L-NMMA: IC50 = 35.52 µM). Compounds 14 and 15 showed anti α-glucosidase activity with IC50 values of 176.24 and 156.92 µM, respectively, compared with the positive control, acarbose, IC50 = 160.99 µM.

A new furostane saponin, ramosaponin (1), and four known furostane saponins, protodioscin (2), dehydrotomatoside (3), (25 R)-26-O-(ß-D-glucopyranosyl)-furost-5-ene-3ß,22α,26-triol 3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-ß-D-galactopyranoside (4), and anguivioside A (5) were isolated from the methanol extract of Allium ramosum seeds. Their structures were identified based on spectroscopic evidence and comparison with those reported in the literature. All compounds were evaluated for reduction of lipid accumulation in HepG2 cell line. As a result, compound 1 showed significant lipid accumulation inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 64.32 ± 3.87 µM.

One new phenylpropanoid glycoside, tinosinen A (1) and 13 known compounds, tinosinen (2), citrusin B (3), picraquassioside C (4), erythro-guaiacylglycerol-ß-O-4'-coniferyl alcohol (5), erythro-guaiacylglycerol-8-O-4'-(sinapyl alcohol) ether (6), erythro-syringylglycerol-8-O-4'-(sinapyl alcohol) ether (7), seco-isolariciresinol 9-O-D-ß-glucopyranoside (8), tinosposide A (9), pinoresinol-4'-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (10), syringaresinol-4'-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (11), pinoresinol (12), syringaresinol (13), and lirioresino-ß-dimethyl ether (14) were isolated from the stems of Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr. Their structures were established by detailed spectroscopic studies and comparisons with those reported in the literature. Compound 13 showed significant inhibitory NO production (IC50 value of 38.53 ± 1.90 µM) in RAW264.7 macrophages, LPS-stimulated. Compounds 3-7, 11, 12, and 14 inhibited NO production with IC50 values ranging from 38.53 to 99.07 µM.

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is an autosomal recessive disease with hypopigmentation in skin, hair, and eyes, causing by the complete absence or reduction of melanin in melanocytes. Many types of OCA were observed based on the mutation in different causing genes relating to albinism. OCA can occur in non-syndromic and syndromic forms, where syndromic OCA coexists with additional systemic consequences beyond hypopigmentation and visual-associated symptoms. METHODS: We performed whole exome sequencing in seven affected individuals (P1-P7) for mutation identification, and then, Sanger sequencing was used for verifications. RESULTS: Among them, five patients (P1-P5) have mutations on TYR gene including c.346C > T, c.929insC, c.115 T > C, and c.559_560ins25. The mutation on OCA2 and HPS1 genes was found in patient 6 (P6, OCA2 c.2323G > A) and patient 7 (P7, HPS1 c.972delC), respectively. Confirmation in parents (except the family of the elderly patient, P5) showed that the mother and the father in each family carried one of the variants that were detected in patients. Additionally, the effective genetic counseling was applied in the third pregnancy of a family with two OCA children (P1 and P2). CONCLUSION: To our best knowledge, this is the first case with a novel homozygous missense mutation (c.115 T > C, p.W39R) in the TYR gene. This study provides a broader spectrum of mutations linked to the oculocutaneous albinism, an additional scientific basis for diagnosis, and appropriate genetic counseling for risk couples.

Polypyrrole (PPy) films doped with molybdate and salicylate have been successfully electropolymerized on low carbon steel in aqueous solutions containing both molybdate and salicylate in a one-step process that did not require any pre-treatment of the steel substrate. Salicylate-doped PPy films were synthesized in the same way for comparison. The steel surface was rapidly inhibited and the PPy-based films were formed on it easily. The PPy-based films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and thermal gravimetric analysis methods. The corrosion protection performance of the coatings was investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open circuit potential (OCP), salt spray test, and Tafel polarization. It was found that in the presence of both molybdate and salicylate as dopants, the films on steel could present a better corrosion resistance than PPy film doped with only salicylate. The self-healing property of PPy-based films was observed on the OCP measurement with the fluctuation of rest potential. The salt spray test results showed that the PPy film doped with both salicylate and molybdate was more salt-resistant than the PPy film doped with only salicylate. The results suggest that the PPy coatings doped with both molybdate and salicylate are potential for application as metallic anti-corrosion coatings.

BACKGROUND: Despite the detrimental effects and life-course health consequences of violence exposure, relatively few studies have adequate capacity to investigate the evolution of violence from childhood to motherhood. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the cyclical nature of childhood abuse and prenatal inter-partner violent victimization (p-IPV) and its adverse impact on childbirth trauma and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practice in Vietnam. METHOD: Using a prospective birth cohort, 150 pregnant women were recruited in the third trimester of pregnancy in Hue city in central Vietnam (Wave 1-Baseline) and re-interviewed approximately three months after delivery (Wave 2-Follow-up). The direct and indirect effects of violent victimization on subsequent childbirth experience (measured by Birth Memories and Recall Questionnaire) and EBF practice were estimated by using augmented-inverse-probability-weighted models, sensitivity analysis, and structural equation model. RESULTS: Detrimental and prolonged effects of the inter-generational cycle of violence transverse childhood to motherhood. Women who experienced either childhood abuse or p-IPV violence were more likely to experience negative emotional childbirth memories [ARR 1.21, 95 % CI (1.04, 1.39)]. Evidence also suggested that not continuing to exclusively breastfeed at 3 months post-partum was strongly associated with prenatal depression, young age, and perceived low social status during pregnancy. Perceived strong connectedness among extended family members and social networks (i.e. nexus among family, friends, and neighborhood) provided a buffering effect by preventing EBF termination. CONCLUSION: This research provides insights into the protective role of social connectedness in improving breastfeeding practice. It is vital to establish wholistic antenatal care and social service system to offer specialized support and response for victims of violence and mitigate the long-term sequelae of traumatic events.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine for adolescents was recommended as an effective prevention strategy of HPV-related cancers. In Vietnam, HPV vaccination has not been introduced to male adolescent. This study was conducted to examine the acceptance of having boys vaccinated against HPV and its underlying reasoning, and to identify their parent's willingness to pay (WTP) for HPV vaccination in central Vietnam. 785 parents of boys were directly interviewed based on a structured questionnaire. Parent's acceptability of HPV vaccine for their sons was identified by one question with response on 3-point scale (agree, don't know, and disagree). Multivariate logistic regression model was used to determine contributing factors to participant's acceptance. Bidding game method was applied to elicit WTP values for HPV vaccination with initial bid of 161.2 USD. The results showed that 49.2% of parents agreed to have their sons vaccinated against HPV. Factors that influenced parent's acceptance including son's age older than 12 years (OR = 1.5; 95% CI: 1.08-1.98); being eldest son (OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.13-2.19), being mother (OR = 1.4; 95% CI: 1.01-1.91), parents with high educational level (OR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.11-2.47) and their knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccine (OR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.23-2.65). Average WTP value for full doses of HPV vaccine was 137.5 USD, ranging between 9 USD and 188.3 USD. Parents' knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccine was the only factor affecting WTP value (Rho: 0.11; p-value: 0.030). The findings suggest a strategy be introduced for HPV vaccination to male adolescents in Vietnam.

This study aims to explore the effects of intimate partner violence during pregnancy (p-IPV) on postpartum depression among women in central Vietnam. p-IPV was defined among 150 women aged 18 years and older in the third trimester of their pregnancy. Baseline data was collected between February and May 2019, and then those women were followed up to 3-5 months after childbirth to assess depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data collection was completed in September 2019. Relative risk was estimated to identify the effect of p-IPV on maternal postpartum depression. Twenty-one women reported IPV during pregnancy. In the follow-up assessment, 8 of 21 mothers exposed to p-IPV and 23 of 127 mothers not exposed to p-IPV developed postpartum depression. p-IPV including emotional and physical violence were increased the risk of postpartum depression. The findings support evidence that p-IPV increases the risk of postpartum depression among women in central Vietnam.

To date, little attention has been given to prenatal depression, especially in low and middle-income countries. The aim of this research was to assess the prevalence of depression and its associated factors amongst pregnant women in a central Vietnamese city. This cross-sectional study included 150 pregnant women from 29 to 40 weeks of gestation, from eight wards of Hue city, via quota sampling from February to May 2019. We employed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to assess depression. Findings suggest the need to provide routine screening of pregnant women in primary care for depressive symptoms and other mental health problems.

Extensive phytochemical investigation of Schisandra sphenanthera leaves resulted in the isolation of six highly oxygenated nortriterpenoids (1-6) and five lignans (7-11) including a new pre-schisanartane-type, schisandrathera A (1), a new dibenzocyclooctadiene glycoside, schisandrathera B (7) and two new lignans, schisandrathera C (8) and schisandrathera D (9). Their chemical structures including absolute configurations were determined extensively by means of HR-ESI-MS, NMR, and ECD spectra. In addition, all isolated compounds were tested for cytotoxic activity against PC3 (prostate cancer) and MCF7 (breast cancer) cell lines. Among these compounds, schirubrisin B (3) showed strong cytotoxic effect on both PC3 and MCF7 cell lines with IC50 values of 3.21 ± 0.68, 13.30 ± 0.68 µM, respectively, whereas ten remaining compounds were found to be less effective in the investigated models.

A core-shell cerium oxide nanorod@polypyrrole (CeO2-NR@Ppy) nanocomposite-based electrochemical DNA biosensor was studied for Salmonella detection. The core-shell CeO2-NR@Ppy nanocomposite was prepared by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole monomer on CeO2-NRs, which provided a suitable platform for electrochemical DNA biosensor fabrication. The immobilization of ss-DNA sequences onto nanocomposite-coated microelectrode was performed via covalent attachment method. DNA biosensor electrochemical responses were studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with [Fe (CN)6]3-/4- as redox probe. Under optimal conditions, DNA biosensor response showed good linearity in the range of 0.01-0.4 nM with sensitivity of 593.7â€¯Ω·nM-1·cm-2. The low limit of detection and limit of quantification for the DNA biosensor were 0.084 and 0.28 nM, respectively. The proposed DNA biosensor also showed good results when used in detecting actual Salmonella samples.

In this study, manganese ferrite-graphene oxide (MFO-GO) nanocomposites were prepared via a co-precipitation reaction of Fe3+ and Mn2+ ions in a GO suspension. The effects of graphene oxide on the physicochemical characteristics, magnetic properties and adsorption activities of the MFO-GO nanocomposites were studied. Methylene blue (MB) and arsenic(v) were used in this study as model water pollutants. With an increase in the GO content in the range of 10 wt% to 50 wt%, the removal efficiency for both MB dye and arsenic(v) ions was improved. Our adsorption data revealed that the adsorption behavior of MB dye showed good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order equation, whereas the Freundlich isotherm model was more suitable for simulating the adsorption process of arsenic(v) ions on the MFO-GO nanocomposites. In addition, an important role of the GO content in the adsorption mechanisms of both MB dye and arsenic(v) ions was found, in which GO nanosheets play a key role in the mechanisms of electrostatic/ionic interactions, oxygen-containing groups and π-π conjugation in the case of the adsorption of MB dye, whereas the role of the GO content is mainly related to the mechanism of electrostatic/ionic interactions in the case of the adsorption of arsenic(v). Graphene oxide has the functions of increasing the number of active binding sites comprising oxygen-containing functional groups, reducing the agglomeration of MFO nanoparticles, increasing the number of adsorption sites, and improving the electrostatic/ionic interactions between adsorbents and adsorbates in order to enhance the adsorption performance of cationic organic dyes and/or heavy metal anions from aqueous solutions.

BACKGROUND: A social health insurance (SHI) program was implemented in Vietnam in 1992. Participation is compulsory for some groups, such as formal-sector workers and voluntary for other groups. In 2013, 68% of the total population was covered by SHI, with most enrollees from compulsory groups. Enrollment has remained low among persons whose enrollment is voluntary. As a result, households face financial risk due to high out-of-pocket payments for health care. The goal of this study is to identify willingness to pay (WTP) for the SHI scheme among persons whose enrollment is voluntary and to examine factors that influence their choice. METHOD: Three hundred thirty-one uninsured persons from three districts and one city of Thua Thien Hue province were interviewed face to face using a structured questionnaire. Contingent valuation technique was used to assess the WTP among the study participants. Each individual was asked to choose the maximum premium they were willing to pay for a health insurance card per year with three copayment levels of 0, 10, and 20%. Seven premium levels were offered ranging from 0 to 900,000 Vietnamese Dong (VND) (42.12 USD). The mean WTP of respondents for each scenario was estimated. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing WTP for SHI. RESULTS: The survey found that 73.1, 72.2, and 71.6%, respectively, for each copayment level, of the respondents would agree to participate in the SHI scheme and are willing to pay an annual premium of 578,926 VND (27.1 USD); 473,222 VND (22.1 USD); and 401,266 VND (18.8 USD) at the copayment levels of 0, 10, and 20%, respectively. The WTP for SHI is influenced by knowledge of SHI at all copayment levels (p value < 0.05). The more knowledge about SHI individuals have, the higher the WTP amount. Chronic disease was related to WTP only at a copayment level of 20% (p = 0.049). CONCLUSION: Enhanced awareness of the benefits of SHI among the population should contribute to expanding SHI coverage in Vietnam.

The PYRIN domain (PYD) is a protein-protein interaction domain, which belongs to the death domain fold (DDF) superfamily. It is best known for its signaling function in innate immune responses and particularly in the assembly of inflammasomes, which are large protein complexes that allow the induced proximity-mediated activation of caspase-1 and subsequently the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The molecular mechanism of inflammasome assembly was only recently elucidated and specifically requires PYD oligomerization. Here we discuss the recent advances in our understanding of PYD signaling and its regulation by PYD-only proteins.

BACKGROUND: Economic transition (DoiMoi) in the 1980s in Viet Nam has led to internal migration, particularly rural-to-urban migration. Many studies suggested that there is a difference between non-migrants and migrants in using health care services. Current studies have mostly focused on migrants working in industrial zones (IZs) but migrants working in private small enterprises (PSEs) and seasonal migrants seem to be ignored. However, these two groups of migrants are more vulnerable in health care access than others because they usually work without labor contracts and have no health insurance. The study aims to compare the utilization of health care services and explore its correlated factors among these three groups. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1800 non-migrants and migrants aged 18-55 who were selected through stratified sampling in Long Bien and Ba Dinh districts, Hanoi. These study sites consist of large industrial zones and many slums where most seasonal migrants live in. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on health service utilization in the last 6 months before the study. Utilization of heath care services was identified as "an ill person who goes to health care centers to seek any treatment (i.e. both private and public health care centers)". RESULTS: 644 of 1800 participants reported having a health problem in the last 6 months before the study. Among these 644 people, 335 people used health care services. The percentage of non-migrants using health care service was the highest (67.6%), followed by migrants working in IZ (53.7%), migrants working in PSE (44%), and seasonal migrants (42%). Multivariate logistic regression showed migrants, especially seasonal migrants and migrants working in PSE, were less likely to use health care services (OR=0.35, p=0.016 and 0.38, p= 0.004, respectively), compared to non-migrants. The study also found that having no health insurance was a risk factor of the utilization (OR=0.29, p<0.001). Other factors such as gender, age, marital status, socioeconomic status, and monthly income were not related to the utilization of health care services. CONCLUSION: Seasonal migrants have the worst utilization of health care services, followed by migrants working in PSE, migrants working in IZ, and non-migrants. Health insurance is an important factor relating to the utilization. Accordingly, health insurance coverage needs to be increased if utilization of health care services for the whole population, particularly migrant population, is to be improved.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a screening program for breast cancer from the health care payers' perspective. METHODS: A Markov model was used to compare costs and effects of an annual screening program using clinical breast examination (CBE) with the absence of screening on a cohort of 4,103,285 asymptomatic women aged 40 years. The model was analyzed over the cohort's lifetime under the assumption that women participated in the screening program annually for 15 years. The model integrated both epidemiological and cost data for breast cancer from prior Vietnamese studies. Costs were measured in 2008 US dollars. Costs and effects were discounted annually at 3%. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was defined as the difference in cost per life-years saved (LYS). One-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were implemented to assess the uncertainty of inputs. RESULTS: The ICER for the breast cancer screening program with CBE was US $994.96 per LYS compared with the absence of screening. Earlier initiation of the program at age 35 years increased the ICER to US $1196.68 per LYS, while extending the duration of time screened to age 60 years decreased the ICER. Changing the participation rate to 70%, reducing the specificity of CBE testing, and increasing the cost of the screening program by 30% raised ICER estimates to US $1419.32, US $1124.15, and US $1292.03 per LYS, respectively. CONCLUSION: Breast cancer screening with CBE for women aged 40 to 55 years is considered very cost-effective in Vietnam according to the World Health Organization criteria.

BACKGROUND: Rural-to-urban migration involves a high proportion of females because job opportunities for female migrants have increased in urban industrial areas. Those who migrate may be healthier than those staying in the village and they may benefit from better health care services at destination, but the 'healthy' effect can be reversed at destination due to migration-related health risk factors. The study aimed to explore the need for health care services for reproductive tract infections (RTIs) among female migrants working in the Sai Dong industrial zone as well as their services utilization. METHODS: The cross sectional study employed a mixed method approach. A cohort of 300 female migrants was interviewed to collect quantitative data. Two focus groups and 20 in-depth interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data. We have used frequency and cross-tabulation techniques to analyze the quantitative data and the qualitative data was used to triangulate and to provide more in-depth information. RESULTS: The needs for health care services for RTI were high as 25% of participants had RTI syndromes. Only 21.6% of female migrants having RTI syndromes ever seek helps for health care services. Barriers preventing migrants to access services were traditional values, long working hours, lack of information, and high cost of services. Employers had limited interests in reproductive health of female migrants, and there was ineffective collaboration between the local health system and enterprises. These barriers were partly caused by lack of health promotion programs suitable for migrants. Most respondents needed more information on RTIs and preferred to receive these from their employers since they commonly work shifts--and spend most of their day time at work. CONCLUSION: While RTIs are a common health problem among female migrant workers in industrial zones, female migrants had many obstacles in accessing RTI care services. The findings from this study will help to design intervention models for RTI among this vulnerable group such as communication for behavioural impact of RTI health care, fostered collaboration between local health care services and employer enterprises, and on-site service (e.g. local or enterprise health clinics) strengthening.
