RESUMO

Background: Infection causes cirrhosis to decompensate, affecting liver function and resulting in several complications, including esophageal variceal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatorenal syndrome. Objective: This study aimed to identify the prevalence, essential features, and related factors of bacterial infection among patients with cirrhosis in Vietnam. Methods: This retrospective study included 317 patients diagnosed with cirrhosis, who were divided into two groups: group 1 including 125 patients with bacterial infection and group 2 including 192 patients without bacterial infection. Infection was diagnosed on the basis of its localization. Results: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP; 31.2%) and pneumonia (28.8%) were the most common infections identified. The procalcitonin (PCT) level had a strong diagnostic value with an area under the curve value of 0.868. The most common type of gram-negative bacteria was Escherichia coli, while the gram-positive bacteria seen were Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, and Streptococcus among the patients with infection. In the logistic regression analysis, Child-Pugh class B and C (p<0.001, OR=4.14, CI=1.90-9.03; OR=4.76, CI=2.03-11.16, respectively) and the presence of acute kidney injury (p=0.009, OR=2.57, CI=1.27-5.22) and gastrointestinal hemorrhage (p=0.035, OR=0.39, CI=0.16-0.94) significantly differed between the groups. Conclusion: The most prevalent type of bacterial infection in patients with cirrhosis is SBP, with gram-negative bacteria being the most common cause. The PCT level is useful in identifying infection in patients with cirrhosis. Decompensated cirrhosis is linked to a higher risk of infection.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Balanophora latisepala (BL) is a chlorophyll-free and obligate parasitic plant found across mountainous areas of An Giang, Vietnam. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of extracts from BL, herbs mentioned in many traditional medicines in the treatment of diabetes, on laboratory mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of BL aqueous, methanol, and ethanol extracts on the blood glucose levels, hematological indices, liver enzymes, and pancreatic tissue structure of normal, glucose-tolerant mice, and diabetic mice treated with streptozotocin (STZ) were assessed. Mice were orally administered extracts at a concentration of 500 mg/kg. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The aqueous and ethanol extracts did not affect the blood glucose levels of healthy and glucose-tolerant mice (P > 0.05). The methanol extract reduced the blood glucose of healthy mice (P < 0.05) but did not affect the blood glucose of glucose-tolerant mice 3 h after administration (P > 0.05). When taking the methanol and ethanol extracts, the diabetic mice experienced a 45.67% and a 40.33% decrease in blood glucose levels after 21 days of research, respectively. Aqueous extract and gliclazide (10 mg/kg) showed no effect on reducing blood glucose levels in diabetic mice over the 21 days of the study. Both methanol and ethanol extracts were effective in regulating liver enzyme levels in diabetic mice. In both untreated and treated diabetic mice, pancreatic islet structures were degraded with the appearance of gaps resulting from ß-cell degeneration. CONCLUSION: This implies that ethanol extracts have potential applications in regulating blood glucose levels.

RESUMO

Eurytrema spp. are pancreatic flukes belonging to the Dicrocoeliidae family. They are the cause of neglected diseases in Vietnam and are responsible for economic losses in ruminant production, particularly in water buffaloes and cattle. Eurytrema spp. have been widely reported in several Asian countries. Recently, morphological and molecular analyses to discriminate Eurytrema spp. have been conducted in Brazil, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia; however, similar analyses have not been performed in Vietnam. In the present study, we identified Eurytrema flukes collected from water buffaloes and cattle in northern Vietnam based on their morphology. Morphometric analyses were conducted on 15 samples each of Eurytrema cladorchis and Eurytrema coelomaticum. Representative samples from both species were selected for molecular analyses, and the nucleotide sequences of the 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) were determined. Phylogenetic analyses based on 18S rRNA sequences revealed that E. cladorchis from Vietnam belongs to the same clade as that from Bangladesh. Similarly, E. coelomaticum isolates from Vietnam and China belonged to the same clade. Both clades were isolated from E. pancreaticum. This is the first study to describe the coexistence of E. cladorchis and E. coelomaticum in Vietnam and the first report of the ITS2 nucleotide sequence for E. coelomaticum, which can be used for molecular species discrimination.

RESUMO

In the present study, the biosynthesis of stable silver nanoparticles (BioAgNPs) was accomplished successfully for the first time by using an aqueous extract derived from the buds of Syzygium nervosum (SN) as both a reducing and a stabilizing agent. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) investigations revealed that the biosynthesized BioAgNPs were predominantly spherical with an average size of 10-30 nm. It was found that the outstanding stability of the BioAgNPs colloidal solution was assigned to the additive effect of the surrounding protective organic layer and the highly negatively charged surface of the nanoparticles. Consequently, good antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the colloidal BioAgNPs solution against four distinct bacterial strains, including Gram-positive S. aureus and B. subtilis as well as Gram-negative E. coli and S. typhi. Interestingly, the biosynthesized BioAgNPs displayed greater antibacterial activity even when tested at low doses against Gram-negative S. typhi. In addition, the biogenic AgNPs demonstrated a significant level of catalytic activity in the process of converting 2-NP, 3-NP, and 4-NP into aminophenols within 15 min, with reaction rate constants of 9.0 × 10-4, 10 × 10-4, and 9.0 × 10-4 s-1, respectively. BioAgNPs formulations were assessed against anthracnose disease in tea plants and were found to be as effective as the positive control at a dose of 20-fold dilution, but less effective at a dose of 30-fold dilution. Both doses of BioAgNPs formulations significantly suppressed Colletotrichum camelliae (anthracnose disease) without affecting the growth of the tea plants.

RESUMO

The oxidation of L-proline (Pro) by HO● radical in water and the influence of transition metal ions on this process has been revisited by using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the M05-2X/6-311 + + G(3df,3pd)//M05-2X/6-311 + + G(d,p) level of theory at the temperature of 298.15 K. The main reactive sites of the HO●-initiated oxidation of Pro via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions are at the ß- and γ-carbon, with the branching ratios being 44.6% and 39.5%, respectively. The overall rate constant at 298.15 K is 6.04 × 108 M-1 s-1. In addition, Pro tends to form stable complexes with both Fe and Cu ions via the -COO functional group of dipole-salt form. The most stable Cu(II)-Pro complexes have high oxidant risks in enhancing the HO● formation in the presence of reducing agents. Besides this, the high oxidation state metal complexes, i.e. Fe(III)-Pro and Cu(II)-Pro, may be oxidized by HO● radical via HAT reactions but with a lower rate constant than that of free-Pro. By contrast, the low oxidation state metal complexes (i.e. Fe(II)-Pro and Cu(I)-Pro) have higher oxidation risks than the free ligands, and thus, the complexation enhances the oxidation of Pro amino acid.

RESUMO

Identifying and ensuring the inactivation of the African Swine Fever virus in deadstock is a gap in the swine industry's knowledge and response capabilities. The results of our study demonstrate that ASFv in deadstock was inactivated using static aerated composting as the carcass disposal method. Replicated compost piles with whole market hogs and two different carbon sources were constructed. In-situ bags containing ASFv-infected spleen tissue were placed alongside each of the carcasses and throughout the pile. The bags were extracted at days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, and 144 for ASFv detection and isolation. Real-time PCR results showed that DNA of ASFv was detected in all samples tested on day 28. The virus concentration identified through virus isolation was found to be below the detection limit by day 3 in rice hulls and by day 7 in sawdust. Given the slope of the decay, near-zero concentration with 99.9% confidence occurred at 5.0 days in rice hulls and at 6.4 days in sawdust. Additionally, the result of virus isolation also showed that the virus in bone marrow samples collected at 28 days was inactivated.

RESUMO

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious swine disease with high mortality. In many countries, culling pigs infected and exposed to the ASF virus is mandatory to control the disease, which poses a real challenge in the disposal of large numbers of carcasses during ASF outbreaks. Shallow burial with carbon (SBC) Thanks ew mortality disposal method developed from deep burial and composting. The present study investigates the effectiveness of SBC in disposing of ASF virus-infected pigs. The real-time PCR results showed that DNA of the ASF virus was still detected in bone marrow samples on day 56, while the virus isolation test revealed that the infectious ASF virus was destroyed in both spleen and bone marrow samples on day 5. Interestingly, decomposition was found to occur rapidly in these shallow burial pits. On day 144, only large bones were found in the burial pit. In general, the results of this study indicated that SBC is a potential method for the disposal of ASF-infected carcasses; however, further studies are needed to provide more scientific evidence for the efficacy of SBC in different environment conditions.

RESUMO

Introduction: Diagnostic test evaluation for African swine fever (ASF) in field settings like Vietnam is critical to understanding test application in intended populations for surveillance and control strategies. Bayesian latent class analysis (BLCA) uses the results of multiple imperfect tests applied to an individual of unknown disease status to estimate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of each test, forgoing the need for a reference test. Methods: Here, we estimated and compared the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of a novel indirect ELISA (iELISA) for ASF virus p30 antibody (Innoceleris LLC.) and the VetAlert™ ASF virus DNA Test Kit (qPCR, Tetracore Inc.) in field samples from Vietnam by assuming that disease status 1) is known and 2) is unknown using a BLCA model. In this cross-sectional study, 398 paired, individual swine serum/oral fluid (OF) samples were collected from 30 acutely ASF-affected farms, 37 chronically ASF-affected farms, and 20 ASF-unaffected farms in Vietnam. Samples were tested using both diagnostic assays. Diagnostic sensitivity was calculated assuming samples from ASF-affected farms were true positives and diagnostic sensitivity by assuming samples from unaffected farms were true negatives. ROC curves were plotted and AUC calculated for each test/sample combination. For comparison, a conditionally dependent, four test/sample combination, three population BLCA model was fit. Results: When considering all assumed ASF-affected samples, qPCR sensitivity was higher for serum (65.2%, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 58.1-71.8) and OF (52%, 95%CI 44.8-59.2) compared to the iELISA (serum: 42.9%, 95%CI 35.9-50.1; OF: 33.3%, 95%CI 26.8-40.4). qPCR-serum had the highest AUC (0.895, 95%CI 0.863-0.928). BLCA estimates were nearly identical to those obtained when assuming disease status and were robust to changes in priors. qPCR sensitivity was considerably higher than ELISA in the acutely-affected population, while ELISA sensitivity was higher in the chronically-affected population. Specificity was nearly perfect for all test/sample types. Discussion: The effect of disease chronicity on sensitivity and specificity could not be well characterized here due to limited data, but future studies should aim to elucidate these trends to understand the best use of virus and antibody detection methods for ASF. Results presented here will help the design of surveillance and control strategies in Vietnam and other countries affected by ASF.

RESUMO

We describe results from a panel study in which pigs from a 17-sow African swine fever (ASF) positive herd in Thái Bình province, Vietnam, were followed over time to record the date of onset of ASF signs and the date of death from ASF. Our objectives were to (1) fit a susceptible-exposed-infectious-removed disease model to the data with transmission coefficients estimated using approximate Bayesian computation; (2) provide commentary on how a model of this type might be used to provide decision support for disease control authorities. For the outbreak in this herd, the median of the average latent period was 10 days (95% HPD (highest posterior density interval): 2 to 19 days), and the median of the average duration of infectiousness was 3 days (95% HPD: 2 to 4 days). The estimated median for the transmission coefficient was 3.3 (95% HPD: 0.4 to 8.9) infectious contacts per ASF-infectious pig per day. The estimated median for the basic reproductive number, R0, was 10 (95% HPD: 1.1 to 30). Our estimates of the basic reproductive number R0 were greater than estimates of R0 for ASF reported previously. The results presented in this study may be used to estimate the number of pigs expected to be showing clinical signs at a given number of days following an estimated incursion date. This will allow sample size calculations, with or without adjustment to account for less than perfect sensitivity of clinical examination, to be used to determine the appropriate number of pigs to examine to detect at least one with the disease. A second use of the results of this study would be to inform the equation-based within-herd spread components of stochastic agent-based and hybrid simulation models of ASF.

RESUMO

The stress of environmental regulations, sustainable development objectives, and global warming is becoming more prominent now. Most studies conclude that the industrial sector is largely at fault and under tremendous pressure to address these climate change issues. This study highlights the significance of green innovation to Chinese firms in mitigating these conservational challenges, and the study probes the association between green innovation and absorptive capacity. Additionally, board capital (the social and human capital of directors) and environmental regulation-both drivers of green innovation-are explored as moderators between green innovation and absorptive capacity. With appropriate econometric methods and theoretical support from the natural resource-based review, the resource dependency theory, and the Porter hypothesis, the results indicate the positive relationship between green innovation and absorptive capacity. They also reveal board capital and environmental regulation as positive moderators, emphasizing their significance to green innovation. This study offers several suggestions and directives for stakeholders, such as businesses, policymakers, and governments, to foster green innovation for greater profitability, minimizing negative industrial consequences.

RESUMO

Coastal sediments in the Mong Cai area were collected and analyzed for grain size, heavy metals, total organic carbon, and isotopes (210Pb, 226Ra, δ15N, δ13C) to assess sediment quality. The most common sediments were fine sand in surface sediment, very fine sand in core C1, and very coarse and coarse silt in core C2. The total organic carbon was highest in C2 next to the surface and lowest in C1, with content levels of 1.81%, 0.40%, and 0.31%, respectively. The chronology in C1 was 1877-2019 (142 years, 0-5 0 cm), with an average sedimentation rate of 0.71 cm/year. In C2, the chronology was 1944-2019 (75 years, 0-14 cm), with an average sedimentation rate of 0.27 cm/year. These δ13C and δ15N in the sediment reflect the source of the organic matter mix from the marine and terrigenous sediments. All studied heavy metals were lower than the ISQGs, with the exception of As in C1 and C2, which were higher. C1 showed a decline in As over time, while C2 As levels increased between 1996 and 2019. In terms of heavy metal pollution indexes, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) showed that C1 and C2 were unpolluted to moderately polluted with As, with Li and Pb in C2; the enrichment factor (EF) was moderately enriched with As; the contamination factor (CF) was moderately contaminated (Pb, Cd, Fe, Mo, and Li) in C2 and C1 (Cd, As, Li) and considerably contaminated (As) in C2. The risk factor (ER) of As showed a moderate potential ecological risk in C2. The degree of contamination (CD) ranged from moderate to considerable (C1, C2), and the ecological risk (RI) was low. Although CD ranged from moderate (C1) to considerable (C2), most contamination was concentrated at the bottom of the cores. RI was low. The Mong Cai sediment quality does not currently affect the coastal area's ecosystem and fauna.

RESUMO

African swine fever (ASF) has been considered as one of the most important and devastating swine diseases with high mortality rates. Since effective vaccines and treatment are not available, mass euthanasia of infected and exposed pigs has been known to be the best measure to control ASF. Although composting has been proved to be a safe method for the rapid disposal of animal carcasses during outbreaks, there is no information about the effect of composting on the viability of ASF virus in swine carcasses. This study investigates the survival of the ASF virus in swine carcasses during composting. The findings suggested that the DNA of the ASF virus was detected in all samples tested. On the contrary, infectious ASF virus particles were rapidly destroyed at day 3.

RESUMO

Background: Awareness of psychotropic medication and its adverse drug reactions (ADRs) can promote safe and rational use of medications, particularly in children and adolescents with mental problems. This study examined the prescription of psychotropic drugs and actual drug-drug interaction (DDI) and ADR for children with mental disorders under 18 years of age in a tertiary hospital in Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 257 psychiatric inpatients under 18 years of age at the National Mental Health Institute-Bach Mai Hospital in 2017. Information about the course of treatment included prescribed medications, drug interactions, side effects, drug combination, and modifications to the regimen was collected. Results: 14.8% and 59.5% of patients received a single-drug regimen and a 2-drug combination regimen upon admission, respectively. The most used regimen was antipsychotics + tranquilizers, accounting for 38.1%. Haloperidol was the most commonly prescribed drug (40.5%). Most patients were given the recommended dosage of the drug (>90%). There were 20.6% of patients having drug interactions with the largest proportion of the combination of diazepam and olanzapine (62.3%). ADRs of psychotropic drugs were detected in 46.3% of patients, with the highest rate of ADRs from antipsychotic drugs. Antipsychotics had the highest rate of replacement (91.3%), mostly replaced from a first-generation antipsychotic (FGA) to a second-generation antipsychotic (SGA). Conclusion: The appointment of psychotropic drugs to patients under 18 years of age has to comply with the recommendations, and carefully balance the benefits and risks of ADRs as well as the risk of DDI in case of the drug combination.

RESUMO

Despite the discovery of several closely related viruses in bats, the direct evolutionary progenitor of SARS-CoV-2 has not yet been identified. In this study, we investigated potential animal sources of SARS-related coronaviruses using archived specimens from Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) and Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla) confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade, and from common palm civets (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) raised on wildlife farms in Viet Nam. A total of 696 pangolin and civet specimens were screened for the presence of viral RNA from five zoonotic viral families and from Sarbecoviruses using primers specifically designed for pangolin coronaviruses. We also performed a curated data collection of media reports of wildlife confiscation events involving pangolins in Viet Nam between January 2016 and December 2020, to illustrate the global pangolin supply chain in the context of Viet Nam where the trade confiscated pangolins were sampled for this study. All specimens from pangolins and civets sampled along the wildlife supply chains between February 2017 and July 2018, in Viet Nam and tested with conventional PCR assays designed to detect flavivirus, paramyxovirus, filovirus, coronavirus, and orthomyxovirus RNA were negative. Civet samples were also negative for Sarbecoviruses, but 12 specimens from seven live pangolins confiscated in Hung Yen province, northern Viet Nam, in 2018 were positive for Sarbecoviruses. Our phylogenetic trees based on two fragments of the RdRp gene revealed that the Sarbecoviruses identified in these pangolins were closely related to pangolin coronaviruses detected in pangolins confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces, China. Our curated data collection of media reports of wildlife confiscation events involving pangolins in Viet Nam between January 2016 and December 2020, reflected what is known about pangolin trafficking globally. Pangolins confiscated in Viet Nam were largely in transit, moving toward downstream consumers in China. Confiscations included pangolin scales sourced originally from Africa (and African species of pangolins), or pangolin carcasses and live pangolins native to Southeast Asia (predominately the Sunda pangolin) sourced from neighboring range countries and moving through Viet Nam toward provinces bordering China.

RESUMO

In this study, the magnetic Fe3O4-graphene oxide (GO) nanohybrid composite material was prepared via the combination of the modified Hummer's method and coprecipitation. The morphology of the hybrid sample showed that the diffusion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the porous channels of mesoporous GO layers not only restricted the restacking of GO nanosheets but also prevented the leaching and agglomeration of magnetic nanoparticles. The result of the kinetic and isotherm studies that were performed to evaluate the adsorption mechanism showed a good fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The As(V) adsorption efficiency, H, of the GO/Fe3O4 nanohybrid composite material reached the maximum value of 99.37% after 60 min. The maximum adsorption capacity qm of the GO/Fe3O4 nanohybrid material was 14.1 mg·g-1 in an acidic aqueous solution (pH 1). The role and contribution of GO and Fe3O4 nanoparticles in adsorption and the improvement in As(V) adsorption efficiency were also investigated in further detail. The findings of this work suggested that the GO/Fe3O4 nanohybrid material could be widely applied for polluted water treatment.

RESUMO

Background Digital transformation is changing the structure and landscape of future banking needs with much emphasis on value creation. Autonomous banking solutions must incorporate on-the-fly processing for risky transactions to create this value. In an autonomous environment, access control with role and trust delegation has been said to be highly relevant. The aim of this research is to provide an end to end working solution that will enable autonomous transaction and task processing for banking. Method We illustrate the use case for task delegation with the aid of risk graphs, risk bands and finite state machines. This paper also highlights a step by step task delegation process using a risk ordering relation methodology that can be embedded into smart contracts. Results Task delegation with risk ordering relation is illustrated with six process owners that share immutable ledgers. Task delegation properties using Multi Agent Systems (MAS) is used to eliminate barriers for autonomous transaction processing. Secondly, the application of risk graph and risk ordering relation with reference to delegation of tasks is a novel approach that is nonexistent in RBAC. Conclusion The novelty of this study is the logic for task delegation and task policies for autonomous execution on autonomous banking platforms akin to the idea of federated ID (Liberty Alliance).

RESUMO

Investigation of the role of animals that have recovered and survived from African swine fever (ASF) in carrying the ASF virus is currently intense and ongoing. However, no clear definition of the carrier stage has been established. The aim of the present study was to establish criteria to elucidate a clear status of survival in naturally ASF-infected domestic pigs in Vietnam. Seroconversion from previous infection was confirmed by serological assay, and the absence of the viral genome in various organs was also assured by molecular analysis of a partial p72 gene. We recognized that histopathological evidence could benefit from further insights into the status and role of the surviving animals; therefore, we performed a histopathological study on four pigs from farms with a history of ASF outbreak. We found fibrotic changes in the reparative process as the main finding in all four pigs. Immunohistochemical detection of viral protein revealed an interesting result. Despite the negative result from viral genome detection, the p30 protein gave a positive signal in the tonsils, lung, and stomach. This raises the possibility of stress-induced viral reactivation in long-term survivors and the risk of further outbreaks from human handling of contaminated carcasses.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinical characteristics and risk factors for atypical community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. METHODS: Multiplex polymerase chain reaction and specific IgM determination were used to detect atypical bacteria in 661 hospitalized children aged 1-15 years with CAP. Clinical and epidemiological patterns were compared between typical and atypical CAP. RESULTS: Children in atypical CAP group manifested significantly lower rates of wheezing, bronchial rales, and interstitial pneumonia and showed higher rates of asthma history, headache, chest pain, and lobar pneumonia . Age group, season of disease onset, asthma history, duration of symptom onset to hospital admission, and radiological findings were the significant risk factors for atypical CAP on multivariate logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical characteristics and risk factors can be used to identify a child at high risk of atypical CAP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) is a highly contagious infectious disease with negative economic impacts on the swine industry. PED outbreaks were reported from 2009 to 2015, but sporadic infection has been observed until now in Vietnam. However, the seroprevalence of PEDV infection has not yet been reported for commercial pig farms in Vietnam. The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of PEDV infection in Vietnamese pig farms to reveal the endemic status of PEDV in northern Vietnam. RESULTS: A serological survey of PEDV infection was carried out using indirect ELISA in commercial pig farms in Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Thai Binh provinces in northern Vietnam in 2019. Twenty sera were randomly collected from each of 10 commercial pig farms, from each province; none of the farms had vaccinated for PEDV. Serological evidence of natural PEDV infection, expressed as a high antibody titre, was observed in the pig farms in all 3 provinces. The OD values were significantly higher (p < 0.001) for pig sera from Thai Binh than from Hai Duong and Hung Yen. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were detected for seropositivity to PEDV based on locality, age, pig breed and farm size. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates serological evidence of natural PEDV infection with high antibody titre in commercial pig farms. PEDV infection was widespread among the pig population in these 3 provinces and that good management and strict biosecurity are needed at these pig farms.

RESUMO

Spirocerca lupi is a common parasitic nematode associated with esophageal cancer of canids. Recent surveys have revealed an increasing number of canids infected with Spirocerca spp. in Africa, the Americas, Europe and Western Asia, and described a new species, Spirocerca vulpis, from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). However, in Southeast Asia, research on Spirocerca spp. is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore Spirocerca infection in domestic dogs in Vietnam and to identify the Spirocerca species by analyzing their morphometric and molecular data. We found Spirocerca spp. specimens in 51 (17.7%) out of 287 dogs examined with the intensity of infection ranging from one to 29 nematodes per dog. These nematodes were morphologically and molecularly identified as S. lupi. For morphology, the presence/absence of teeth, the ratio of glandular to muscular esophagus lengths, and the position of the vulva opening of S. lupi and S. vulpis varied between reports, suggesting caution in identification of Spirocerca species based exclusively on morphological characteristics. The molecular analysis based on a partial cox1 sequence revealed that S. lupi from Vietnam is genetically close to those from India and China, but far different from those of Israel, South Africa, Peru and Hungary. Given high genetic and morphological variations, more extensive surveys on Spirocerca spp. from various mammalian hosts at a greater scale are necessary to elucidate the divergence of this nematode.
