RESUMO

We report the results obtained in 1992 concerning the determination of blood lead levels (PbB) in 1321 subjects of the general population living in ten villages/towns of the Florence district characterised by the presence of artistic ceramic factories. We reported also the PbB values found in 2330 adults, 280 children, 39 pregnant women and their correspondent umbilical cords, who were examined during the second biological monitoring campaign against the risk of lead intoxication according to the DPR 496/82. Median PbB values were 92.5 micrograms/l (range 15-520 micrograms/l) for males and 62.5 micrograms/l (range 11-343 micrograms/l) for females. The lower PbB median values were found in the district of Livorno (76.25 micrograms/l and 48.25 micrograms/l in males and females, respectively) and Arezzo (80.5 micrograms/l and 52 micrograms/l in males and females, respectively). In comparison with the results obtained for the general Italian population during the previous biological monitoring campaign carried out in 1985-86 we observed PbB median values about 40% lower for both males and females and PbB median values about 55% lower for children. A significant statistic correlation (r = 0.53) was found between PbB of pregnant women and their umbilical cords.

RESUMO

We report the results of 24,475 blood lead determinations (PbB) performed by the Occupational Toxicology Laboratory of Florence between 1976 and 1995. Biological monitoring was carried out in 383 factories localized in the districts of Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca and Pisa. The most represented production fields were colouring ceramic factories, artistic ceramics, transfer-pictures for ceramics, glass factories, typographies, glass decoration factories, chemical factories. In twenty years, the median values of PbB decreased from 48 to 17 micrograms/100 ml in males and from 40 to 8 micrograms/100 ml in females. The 95 degrees centile ranged from 84 to 46 micrograms/100 ml for males and from 63 to 42 micrograms/100 ml for females. In the 1988-95 period, we observed an increase of both the 95 degrees centile and the maximal values because of the inclusion of data from workers employed in factories where the "decorazione a scavo" technique, which is characterized by elevated environmental lead concentrations, was used. In the period 1991-93, the ranges of PbB observed in glass decoration factories were 13-160 micrograms/100 ml for males and 4-80 micrograms/100 ml for females, respectively.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Lead poisoning is a major cause of environmental concern in all countries worldwide. Saturnism in children, especially if young and neglected, represents a peculiar phenomenon both in terms of the biology of growing subjects and the epidemiological nature of poisoning. In under five-year-olds, in addition to lead levels in the atmosphere, it is equally important to evaluate the presence of contaminated dust in the house, hand-to-mouth activities and the level of care provided by parents. It has been demonstrated that, in the presence of equivalent environmental lead levels, dust removal from the house and prevention of hand-to-mouth activities can successfully reduce lead blood levels (PbB) in children. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of chronic lead poisoning in children attending Local Health Unit 6 in Piana di Lucca and to assess the need for a possible health education campaign aimed at eliminating the specific pediatric risk for lead poisoning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Assay of lead blood levels in 172 children from 0 to 14 years old consecutively attending the Emergency Ward at Campo di Marte Hospital in Lucca for reasons not relating to lead poisoning. RESULTS: Mean lead blood levels in children were 57.2 +/- 30.2 mg/l (mean 50 mg/l) without significant differences between the various age brackets (0-5, 6-10, 11-14 years old). Only one child presented pathological PbB levels (280 mg/l when first measured; 360 mg/l a few months later with normal values of erythrocytic Zn-protoporphyrin, 24-h urinary lead excretion and 24-h urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid). An epidemiological study is now being made of the causes. The general population within the same area presented mean PbB levels of 70.4 +/- 36.9 mg/l (mean 60 mg/l), measured in a total of 471 subjects (adults and children). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The PbB levels currently found in children resident in Lucca confirm a low-risk environmental situation. Preventive measures specifically aimed at children do not therefore appear to be justified at present.

RESUMO

In the study of cervical posterior of the facial vein of the foetus, newborns and children we injected in the veins of the head and neck of 15 corpses, rubber material (Xantopren and or Neoprene Latex). The results showed than the retromandibular and or the facial vein form a venous trunk in 83.3%, what finish always in the intern jugular vein or join the retromandibular vein and casually also with a posterior auricular vein originating the extern jugular vein (16.7%).

RESUMO

Weakness of the flexor pollicis longus, flexor digitorum profundus and pronator quadratus is usually related to an isolated paralysis of the anterior interosseous nerve in the volar aspect of the forearm. The same syndrome may be caused by lesions of the median nerve in the supracondylar region and by involvement of the fibers assigned to the abovementioned nerve in the medial and lateral cords of the brachial plexus. We report 4 cases of the anterior interosseous nerve syndrome (3 spontaneous and one traumatic), review and discuss etiological factors, clinical features and electromyographic findings in the syndrome.

RESUMO

Early somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in 33 patients with supratentorial brain tumors (9 benign tumors, 17 glioblastomas and 7 metastases). All the cases were studied with CT scan and all but 2 were surgically explored and histologically classified. Evoked potentials were statistically analyzed regarding the nature and site of the tumors. The temporal malignant tumors showed the most significant alterations in latencies, particularly for waves P25, N34 and P44.

RESUMO

The Authors describe two cases of "Anterior interosseus nerve syndrome" with spontaneous recovery. The etiopathogenesis of the syndrome is discussed after reviewing the anatomy of the nerve and muscles, as well as diagnostic procedures. The main clinical features are: 1) no sensory troubles, 2) impairment of muscles innervated by interosseus nerve (flexor pollicis longus, external portion of flexor digitorum profundus, pronator quadratus). The electrophysiological confirmation of the diagnosis is based on EMG findings, while conduction velocity appears to be complementary but not conclusive. The therapeutic aspects are discussed.
