INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis is a disabling pathology characterized by joint pain and stiffness. A prevalence of coxarthrosis of 7.4% is reported in our country. Total hip joint replacement is indicated in advanced stages, a procedure that is not free of complications, the most frequent being prosthetic dislocation, which can be prevented with dual mobility systems. The following study aims to determine the rate of complications and clinical outcomes in dual mobility systems in primary coxarthrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 120 cases in 114 patients diagnosed with grade III coxarthrosis, mean age was 62.43 years, with a mean follow-up of 4.5 years. Joint replacement was performed by Hardinge approach. All cases were assessed clinically using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) and radiologically to demonstrate mid-term results. RESULTS: The preoperative value on the HHS scale had a mean of 56.45, postoperative at one month 74.23; 6 months 85.40; 1 year 94.01 and at 5 years 94.84 points, representing a functional improvement of 17.78 postoperative month; 28.95 at 6 months postoperative; 37.56 at one year postoperative and 38.39 points at 5 years postoperative. A complication rate of 3.44%; 0.86% of complications were associated with the prosthetic components. CONCLUSION: The dual mobility system should be considered as a therapeutic option in primary hip joint replacement due to excellent functional results and low complication rates. EVIDENCE LEVEL: IV. Worldwide climate-driven shifts in the distribution of species is of special concern when it involves habitat-forming species. In the coastal environment, large Laminarian algae-kelps-form key coastal ecosystems that support complex and diverse food webs. Among kelps, Macrocystis pyrifera is the most widely distributed habitat-forming species and provides essential ecosystem services. This study aimed to establish the main drivers of future distributional changes on a global scale and use them to predict future habitat suitability. Using species distribution models (SDM), we examined the changes in global distribution of M. pyrifera under different emission scenarios with a focus on the Southeast Pacific shores. To constrain the drivers of our simulations to the most important factors controlling kelp forest distribution across spatial scales, we explored a suite of environmental variables and validated the predictions derived from the SDMs. Minimum sea surface temperature was the single most important variable explaining the global distribution of suitable habitat for M. pyrifera. Under different climate change scenarios, we always observed a decrease of suitable habitat at low latitudes, while an increase was detected in other regions, mostly at high latitudes. Along the Southeast Pacific, we observed an upper range contraction of -17.08° S of latitude for 2090-2100 under the RCP8.5 scenario, implying a loss of habitat suitability throughout the coast of Peru and poleward to -27.83° S in Chile. Along the area of Northern Chile where a complete habitat loss is predicted by our model, natural stands are under heavy exploitation. The loss of habitat suitability will take place worldwide: Significant impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are likely. Furthermore, changes in habitat suitability are a harbinger of massive impacts in the socio-ecological systems of the Southeast Pacific.

Background: Urban gardens, despite their transformed nature, serve as invaluable microcosms for a quantitative examination of floral resource provision to urban pollinators, considering the plant's origin. Thus, knowledge has increased, emphasizing the importance of these green areas for hosting and conserving pollinator communities. However, there is a significant knowledge gap concerning the changing availability of these native and exotic floral resources over time and their impact on structuring interaction networks with specific pollinators. Methods: Over a year-long period, monthly surveys were conducted to record both native and exotic plant species visited by hummingbirds in an urban garden at Tlaxcala, Mexico. Flower visits were recorded, and the total flowers on each plant visited were tallied. Additionally, all observed hummingbirds were recorded during the transect walks, regardless of plant visits, to determine hummingbird abundance. The interactions were summarized using matrices, and network descriptors like connectance, specializacion, nestedness, and modularity were computed. Plant and hummingbird species in the core and periphery of the network were also identified. Lastly, simulations were performed to assess the network's resilience to the extinction of highly connected native and exotic plant species, including those previously situated in the network's core. Results: We recorded 4,674 interactions between 28 plant species, and eight hummingbird species. The majority of plants showed an ornithophilic syndrome, with 20 species considered exotic. Despite asynchronous flowering, there was overlap observed across different plant species throughout the year. Exotic plants like Jacaranda mimosifolia and Nicotiana glauca produced more flowers annually than native species. The abundance of hummingbirds varied throughout the study, with Saucerottia berillyna being the most abundant species. The plant-hummingbird network displayed high connectance, indicating generalization in their interaction. Significant nestedness was observed, mainly influenced by exotic plant species. The core of the network was enriched with exotic plants, while Basilinna leucotis and Cynanthus latirostris played central roles among hummingbirds. Network resilience to species extinction remained generally high. Conclusions: Our findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics and structure of plant-hummingbird interactions in urban gardens, emphasizing the influence of exotic plant species and the network's resilience to perturbations. Understanding and managing the impact of exotic plants on such networks is crucial for the conservation and sustainable functioning of urban ecosystems.

Background: Land use change is a key catalyst of global biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Deforestation and conversion of natural habitats to agricultural or urban areas can profoundly disrupt plant-flower visitor interactions by altering their abundances and distribution. Yet, specific studies analyzing the effects of land use change on the structure of networks of the interactions between particular groups of flower visitors and their plants are still scarce. Here, we aimed to analyze how converting native habitats affects the species composition of butterfly communities and their plants, and whether this, in turn, leads to changes in the structure of interaction networks in the modified habitats. Methods: We performed bi-monthly censuses for a year to record plant-butterfly interactions and assess species diversity across three habitat types, reflecting a land-use change gradient. From original native juniper forest to urban and agricultural zones in central Mexico, one site per land use type was surveyed. Interactions were summarized in matrices on which we calculated network descriptors: connectance, nestedness and modularity. Results: We found highest butterfly diversity in native forest, with the most unique species (i.e., species not shared with the other two sites). Agricultural and urban sites had similar diversity, yet the urban site featured more unique species. The plant species richness was highest in the urban site, and the native forest site had the lowest plant species richness, with most of the plants being unique to this site. Butterfly and plant compositions contrasted most between native forest and modified sites. Network analysis showed differences between sites in the mean number of links and interactions. The urban network surpassed agriculture and native forest networks in links, while the native forest network had more interactions than the agriculture and urban networks. Native plants had more interactions than alien species. All networks exhibited low connectance and significant nestedness and modularity, with the urban network featuring the most modules (i.e., 10 modules). Conclusions: Converting native habitats to urban or agricultural areas reshapes species composition, diversity and interaction network structure for butterfly communities and plants. The urban network showed more links and modules, suggesting intricate urban ecosystems due to diverse species, enhanced resources, and ecological niches encouraging interactions and coexistence. These findings emphasize the impacts of land use change on plant-butterfly interactions and the structure of their interaction networks.

The application of natural coagulants derived from food byproducts in domestic wastewater tertiary treatment, which contains a number of impurities as suspended colloidal particles, has a potential use as essential substitutes for traditional inorganic coagulants. These biomaterials are a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative that can be used to improve water quality and human health. In this study, prickly pear (PP) fruit peel mucilage gel was evaluated as a novel coagulant for the tertiary stage of domestic wastewater treatment. Jar tests were performed on residual raw water at the inlet (influent) and outlet (effluent) of the tertiary wastewater treatment (constructed wetland) with a coagulant dose of 12 mg L-1 at a pH of 13. The efficiency of green (i.e., mucilage) and inorganic chemical (i.e., FeCl3) coagulants was compared on the basis of turbidity and color removal. The flocs produced by the coagulants were characterized structurally by FTIR spectroscopy and Zeta potential analysis and morphologically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the turbidity and the color removal efficiency of the mucilage compared to the FeCl3 at the outlet of the treatment (effluent) were practically the same, reaching 94% turbidity and 85-87% color removal efficiency with both coagulants. The structure and morphology of the flocs generated by the coagulants showed a higher content of organic matter trapped in the flocs. The floc formation observed mechanisms were adsorption/bridging for mucilage and charge neutralization for FeCl3. The results of this study demonstrated that the PP mucilage green coagulant can be used to enhance the quality of treatment of domestic wastewater in an eco-friendly and biodegradable manner.

Schwannomas are benign nerve sheath tumors that arise from Schwann cells, which are responsible for producing the myelin sheath that surrounds nerves. They are typically slow-growing and can occur in various locations in the body, including the lumbar region of the spine. We present a case of giant invasive intradural extramedullary schwannoma managed with posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and laminectomy with excellent results. A 58-year-old man presented with lower back pain radiating to the right leg for six months. He had no history of trauma or systemic disease. Lumbosacral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-defined mass at the L3-L4 level compressing the right nerve root. The patient was managed with L3-L4-L5 transpedicular fixation and right-side laminectomy L3-L4 for resection of the tumor. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma. The patient had a favorable postoperative recovery and experienced a resolution of symptoms. Lumbar schwannomas are rare they can cause significant symptoms and require appropriate diagnosis and management. Microsurgery is the preferred treatment, and endoscopic microsurgery is the most promising technique.

RESUMO

Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy is found in all biogeographic regions. The genus contains approximately 360 known species, 18 of which have been recorded from Mexico. Herein, we describe six new species in the Fannia pretiosa-group, redescribe Fannia gilvitarsis Chillcott, and provide diagnosis, habitus images, drawings of the male terminalia, and an identification key for all species of the group that occur in Mexico. All Fannia pretiosa-group species from Mexico share a similar morphology of the mid tibia, hind femur, and male terminalia.

The postmortem interval (PMI) is the time elapsing since the death of an individual until the body is examined. Different molecules have been analyzed to better estimate the PMI with variable results. The miRNAs draw attention in the forensic field to estimate the PMI as they can better support degradation. In the present work, we analyzed the miRNome at early PMI in rats' skeletal muscle using the Affymetrix GeneChip™ miRNA 4.0 microarrays. We found 156 dysregulated miRNAs in rats' skeletal muscle at 24 h of PMI, out of which 84 were downregulated, and 72 upregulated. The miRNA most significantly downregulated was miR-139-5p (FC = -160, p = 9.97 × 10-11), while the most upregulated was rno-miR-92b-5p (FC = 241.18, p = 2.39 × 10-6). Regarding the targets of these dysregulated miRNAs, the rno-miR-125b-5p and rno-miR-138-5p were the miRNAs with more mRNA targets. The mRNA targets that we found in the present study participate in several biological processes such as interleukin secretion regulation, translation regulation, cell growth, or low oxygen response. In addition, we found a downregulation of SIRT1 mRNA and an upregulation of TGFBR2 mRNA at 24 h of PMI. These results suggest there is an active participation of miRNAs at early PMI which could be further explored to identify potential biomarkers for PMI estimation.

BACKGROUND: Ictalurus is one of the most representative groups of North American freshwater fishes. Although this group has a well-studied fossil record and has been the subject of several morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies, incomplete taxonomic sampling and insufficient taxonomic studies have produced a rather complex classification, along with intricate patterns of evolutionary history in the genus that are considered unresolved and remain under debate. RESULTS: Based on four loci and the most comprehensive taxonomic sampling analyzed to date, including currently recognized species, previously synonymized species, undescribed taxa, and poorly studied populations, this study produced a resolved phylogenetic framework that provided plausible species delimitation and an evolutionary time framework for the genus Ictalurus. CONCLUSIONS: Our phylogenetic hypothesis revealed that Ictalurus comprises at least 13 evolutionary units, partially corroborating the current classification and identifying populations that emerge as putative undescribed taxa. The divergence times of the species indicate that the diversification of Ictalurus dates to the early Oligocene, confirming its status as one of the oldest genera within the family Ictaluridae.

We conducted a study of material from the Colección de Artrópodos de Referencia Forense, UNAM (CARF), Colección Nacional de Insectos, UNAM (CNIN) and Colección de Insectos del Bosque Seco, Estación de Biología Chamela, UNAM (EBCH), which revealed three new distributional records of cactus flies species in Mexico as follows: Cerantichir enderleini (Hennig, 1937), Eoneria blanchardi Aczél, 1951, and Glyphidops durus (Cresson, 1926). This study also described two new species: Cerantichir mexicana Gomes & Sepúlveda and Eoneria ramirezi Gomes & Sepúlveda. We update the distribution records of the cactus flies (Neriidae) distributed in Mexico. The list of species includes: Glyphidops filosus (Fabricius, 1805), Glyphidops flavifrons (Bigot, 1886), Glyphidops filosus (Fabricius, 1805), Glyphidops xanthopus (Schiner, 1868), Nerius pilifer Fabricius, 1805, Nerius plurivittatus Bigot, 1886, Nerius purpusianus Enderlein, 1922, Odontoloxozus longicornis (Coquillett, 1904), and Odontoloxozus pachycericola Mangan & Baldwin, 1986. This study increases the number of species known to occur in Mexico from eight to 13.

Scientific awards can shape scientific careers, helping to secure jobs and grants, but can also contribute to the lack of diversity at senior levels and in the elite networks of scientists. To assess the status quo and historical trends, we evaluated 'best researcher' awards and 'best paper' early- and mid-career awards from broad-scope international journals and societies in ecology and evolution. Specifically, we collated information on eligibility rules, assessment criteria and potential gender bias. Our results reveal that, overall, few awards foster equitable access and assessment. Although many awards now explicitly allow extensions of the eligibility period for substantial career interruptions, there is a general lack of transparency in terms of assessment and consideration of other differences in access to opportunities and resources among junior researchers. Strikingly, open science practices were mentioned and valued in only one award. By highlighting instances of desirable award characteristics, we hope this work will nudge award committees to shift from simple but non-equitable award policies and practices towards strategies enhancing inclusivity and diversity. Such a shift would benefit not only those at the early- and mid-career stages but the whole research community. It is also an untapped opportunity to reward open science practices, promoting transparent and robust science.

Background: By changing the circumstances in which animals make their behavioral decisions, weekly cycles of human activity might cause changes in wildlife behavior. For example, when there is more human activity in a location, animals may become more vigilant, which can decrease the time they spend foraging, or roam farther from home, leading to increased home range size. Overall, there has been little exploration of how animal species living in locations that have undergone land use change are affected by the temporal dynamics of human activity levels. In this study, we aimed to analyze the effect of the weekend on agricultural activities and hummingbird territorial activity. We examined differences between weekdays and weekends in factors previously shown to follow weekly cyclical patterns, such as pedestrian presence, traffic, and the presence of domestic animals. We hypothesized that territorial hummingbirds would respond to these weekly cycles of human activity by altering their behavior. Methods: We studied Broad-tailed hummingbird territories in forested areas that had been transformed to agriculture lands in central Mexico. We evaluated whether territorial individuals changed their behaviors (i.e., chases of intruders, foraging within their territory, number of intruders allowed to forage in the territory) in response to variation between weekdays and weekends in the number of pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, farm animals and vehicles. Results: We found that the level of agriculture-related human activities showed a weekly cycle at our study site. On weekdays there was higher traffic of pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, farm animals and vehicles, compared to the weekends. Hummingbirds responded to these weekday-weekends differences by changing their territorial behavior. Compared to weekends, on weekdays hummingbirds showed a decrease in defense (number of chases) as well as the use of their territory (number of flowers visited), which allowed increased access to intruders (number of visited flowers by intruders). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that variation in agriculture-related human activities between weekdays and weekends can alter the territorial behavior of hummingbirds. Behavioral shifts seem to be related to these human activity cycles, leading hummingbirds to reduce chases and feeding during weekdays when human activity is highest, but increasing both behaviors during times of minimal disturbance.

Introducción: La capsulitis adhesiva es una enfermedad que se caracteriza por el engrosamiento de la cápsula articular del hombro, lo que se traduce clínicamente en dolor y una pérdida progresiva de la movilidad. El tratamiento conservador es la primera opción. En este estudio, se evaluó el uso de corticoesteroides articulares para el manejo de este cuadro. Materiales y Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio retrospectivo entre 2015 y 2020. Se evaluaron los registros de consulta externa de pacientes con diagnóstico de capsulitis adhesiva u hombro congelado, que recibieron tratamiento con corticoesteroides por vía oral o articular. Resultados: Se analizó a 19 pacientes, 8 recibieron tratamiento por vía oral y 11, por vía articular. Hubo una mejoría importante en ambos grupos, pero los pacientes que recibieron corticoesteroides articulares comunicaron una mejoría a largo plazo. Conclusiones: La administración de corticoesteroides tanto por vía oral como articular para tratar la capsulitis adhesiva fue eficaz; sin embargo, a largo plazo, los corticoesteroides articulares resultaron más eficaces. Introduction: Adhesive capsulitis is a condition defined by thickening of the shoulder joint capsule, which clinically translates into discomfort and progressive loss of range of motion, with conservative therapy being the initial option. In this study, we evaluate the use of intra-articular corticosteroid injections for the treatment of this condition. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted between 2015 and 2020, assessing the outpatient records of patients diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder and treated with corticosteroids either orally or intra-articularly. Results: A total of 19 patients were analyzed, 8 received oral treatment and 11 received intra-articular injection, with both groups showing considerable improvement, with the difference that the patients in the articular corticosteroid group reported long-term improvement. Conclusion: Corticosteroids have been found to be effective in the treatment of adhesive capsulitis both orally and by intra-articular injection; however, intra-articular corticosteroids have proved to be more effective in the long term. The seasonal movements of birds are a phenomenon that has historically been of interest in ecology and biogeography. Despite this, information on how environmental conditions influence migratory behavior and its regulation is still scarce. In this work, we study the Broad-Tailed hummingbird Selasphorus platycercus from an analysis of its populations through longitudinal and latitudinal gradients. We use the frequencies of monthly presence records throughout the annual cycle to identify the breeding areas (corresponding to the summer months), of winter presence (corresponding to the winter months), and annual residence (presence records throughout the year). Subsequently, we use ecological niche models to reconstruct the potential distribution of the summer and winter niches by correlating the climates of each season with the corresponding records. We evaluate the species' climatic preferences between the breeding and winter seasons by transferring the niches from each season to the opposite and by their capacity to inter-predict records between seasons. In addition, we quantify the overlap between the summer and winter niches using a niche similarity analysis. Geographically, we see a clear seasonal turnover pattern along a north-south gradient and records throughout the year (resident populations) in the south-central region of its distribution. We observed a low inter-prediction of records between seasons. Together with the similarity analysis, we suggest that the species is niche-switching (i.e., has different seasonal niches). We identified three seasonal migration patterns among the species' populations: long-distance migratory, short-distance summer migrant, and resident. Our findings suggest that the different migration patterns in this species' populations all over its distribution can be explained through seasonal climatic variations throughout the year.

The peels obtained as a byproduct from the processing of fruits (prickly pears) of the Cactaceae family are a rich source of mucilage, a hydrocolloid biopolymer that may have potential application in water/wastewater treatment as a natural coagulant. In this study, the structural (UPLC-QTOF-MS, FTIR, Raman, NMR, XRD, and zeta potential), morphological (SEM), and thermal (DSC/TGA) characterizations of the mucilage extracted from the peels of Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) fruits were carried out. UPLC-QTOF-MS results revealed the presence of a branched polymer with an average molecular weight of 0.44 KDa for this mucilage in aqua media. The NMR spectra of mucilage in DMSO-d6 indicated that it seemed well-suited as a coagulant with its typical oligosaccharide structure. FTIR studies confirmed the presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups in the mucilage, indicating its polyelectrolyte nature that could provide coagulating properties through binding and adsorption mechanisms. Likewise, the zeta potential of -23.63 ± 0.55 mV showed an anionic nature of the mucilage. Power XRD technique evidenced the presence of crystalline poly(glycine-ß-alanine), glutamic acid, and syn-whewellite. SEM images revealed an irregular and amorphous morphology with cracks, which are suitable characteristics for adsorption mechanisms. The mucilage exhibited two endothermic transitions, with a decomposition temperature in uronic acid of 423.10 °C. These findings revealed that mucilage obtained from OFI fruit peels has molecular and physicochemical characteristics that are suited to its possible application as a natural coagulant in water/wastewater treatments.

The mistletoe Psittacanthus schiedeanus, a keystone species in interaction networks between plants, pollinators, and seed dispersers, infects a wide range of native and non-native tree species of commercial interest. Here, using RNA-seq methodology we assembled the whole circularized quadripartite structure of P. schiedeanus chloroplast genome and described changes in the gene expression of the nuclear genomes across time of experimentally inoculated seeds. Of the 140,467 assembled and annotated uniGenes, 2,000 were identified as differentially expressed (DEGs) and were classified in six distinct clusters according to their expression profiles. DEGs were also classified in enriched functional categories related to synthesis, signaling, homoeostasis, and response to auxin and jasmonic acid. Since many orthologs are involved in lateral or adventitious root formation in other plant species, we propose that in P. schiedeanus (and perhaps in other rootless mistletoe species), these genes participate in haustorium formation by complex regulatory networks here described. Lastly, and according to the structural similarities of P. schiedeanus enzymes with those that are involved in host cell wall degradation in fungi, we suggest that a similar enzymatic arsenal is secreted extracellularly and used by mistletoes species to easily parasitize and break through tissues of the host.

A dominance hierarchy is the set of ranks occupied by species within an assemblage. Species with a high position within the dominance hierarchy tend to dominate subordinate species in contests for access to resources. In hummingbirds, greater weight and wing disc loading have been associated with highest ranks within the dominance hierarchy. Nevertheless, the limit to which the difference between the weight of contending species represents a competitive advantage has not yet been determined. Here, we determined the dominance hierarchy of a hummingbird assemblage exploiting the most abundant floral resource (Palicourea padifolia, Rubiaceae) in a cloud forest of central Veracruz, Mexico. Specifically, we tested whether species weight and wing disc loading influence the dominance hierarchy. Additionally, we tested whether the flowers visited per foraging bout increases with species weight and dominance. We further tested whether weight, wing disc loading, and the genetic relatedness between contenders influenced the dominance relationships in species-pair interactions. Our results indicate that the hierarchy is positively influenced by weight. Hummingbirds visited similar number of flowers regardless their weight or their dominance. Nevertheless, the probability that the heaviest contender won contests was positively associated with the differences of weight and genetic relatedness between contenders. Contrarily, the probability that the contender with greatest wing disc loading won contests was positively associated with differences of weight and negatively associated with the relatedness between contenders. However, these models only explained between 22% and 34% of the variation, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the weight was the major contributor to high dominance values. However, future studies should include (1) the temporal variability of the weight and (2) experimental predictor variables such the burst power of the hummingbirds to evaluate its effects on the dynamics of dominance hierarchies in hummingbird assemblages. All the hummingbird species present in the studied assemblage have developed wide behavioral mechanisms that compensate their morphological differences, which allow them to coexist, even when they compete for the access to the same resource.

Malathion is a widely used organophosphorus pesticide; it is also a molecule of forensic interest due to its moderate to high toxicity in nontarget organisms, humans included. This compound is present in some fatal intoxications, accidental or intentional; its presence in the tissues on which the cadaveric entomofauna feeds may affect its growth rate and life cycle duration leading to an error in the estimation of the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). Since the toxic effect of malathion on the cadaveric entomofauna could affect the estimation of the PMImin, the aim of this work was to study the toxic effect of malathion on the growth and development of the scuttle fly, Megaselia scalaris, a fly of forensic interest which plays an important role in forensics cases related to human remains found indoors or in concealed environments. The study was complemented with some morphological observations; no morphological changes were observed in the larvae, nor the adult flies exposed to malathion. Malathion affects the viability of the egg and pupa, it also reduces the larval growth rate and increases the duration of the larval stage; therefore, the estimation of the PMImin, with this species when malathion is present in tissues, could be affected.
