OBJECTIVES: The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate and report response to treatment with a 10-week maintenance-free COP (COP-10) protocol in a cohort of 27 cats with intermediate or large cell lymphoma. Additionally, to identify any potential prognostic factors for predicting the treatment response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of cats diagnosed with intermediate or large cell lymphoma in a single institution in the period 2014 to 2023 and treated with COP-10 as first-line treatment were reviewed. RESULTS: Twenty-seven cats were included in the study. The median age was 10 years, 67% of the cats were in stages I to II and the most common anatomical location was alimentary (37%). The overall response rate was 65%, with 38% of cats achieving complete remission and 27% partial remission. For cats achieving complete remission, the median progression-free interval and the median lymphoma-specific survival time were both 1,139 days. For cats in partial remission, the median progression-free interval and the median lymphoma-specific survival time were 53 and 210 days, respectively. Clinical stage was significantly related to treatment response and survival time. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Treatment with the short protocol COP-10 resulted in remission rates and durable first remissions for cats achieving complete remission comparable to responses seen with longer-duration chemotherapy protocols. The results from this study may impact economic and logistic decisions for owners, as well as the quality of life for patients in the future.

RESUMO

Sudden oak death caused by the oomycete Phytophthora ramorum was first discovered in California toward the end of the 20th century and subsequently emerged on tanoak forests in Oregon before its first detection in 2001 by aerial surveys. The Oregon Department of Forestry has since monitored the epidemic and sampled symptomatic tanoak trees from 2001 to the present. Populations sampled over this period were genotyped using microsatellites and studied to infer the population genetic history. To date, only the NA1 clonal lineage is established in this region, although three lineages exist on the North American west coast. The original introduction into the Joe Hall area eventually spread to several regions: mostly north but also east and southwest. A new introduction into Hunter Creek appears to correspond to a second introduction not clustering with the early introduction. Our data are best explained by both introductions originating from nursery populations in California or Oregon and resulting from two distinct introduction events. Continued vigilance and eradication of nursery populations of P. ramorum are important to avoid further emergence and potential introduction of other clonal lineages.

Phytophthora ramorum S. Werres & A.W.A.M. de Cock is the causal agent of sudden oak death in California and Oregon forests and ramorum blight on a broad range of host species in wildlands and nurseries. It is thought to be an introduced pathogen and only three clonal lineages are known (3). The North American lineage (lineage NA1, mating type A2) is responsible for infections in California and Oregon forests. The European lineage (lineage EU1, predominantly A1) is responsible for infections in Europe, but has also been found in nurseries in Oregon and Washington. A third lineage (NA2) has only been isolated in a few instances from nurseries in Washington and California. In June 2006, P. ramorum was isolated from diseased Viburnum tinus, Osmanthus heterophyllus, and O. fragrans cultivars from a Humboldt County retail nursery in northern California. We genotyped isolates and placed them into clonal lineages using microsatellite markers developed for P. ramorum (3,4). Genomic DNA was extracted from mycelia with the FastDNA SPIN kit (Q-Biogene, Morgan, Irvine, CA). Primers used were PrMS6, Pr9C3, PrMS39, PrMS43a, PrMS43b, and PrMS45 (3) and 18, 64, and 82 (4). We sized fluorescently labeled amplicons using capillary electrophoresis (3100 Avant Genetic Analyzer, Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA). Isolate genotypes were compared with control isolates of known clonal lineage, including BBA9/95 (EU1), Pr102 (NA1), and WSDA3765 (NA2). Three of four isolates belonged to genotype EU1. The fourth isolate, obtained from O. fragrans, belonged to genotype NA1. We repeated genotyping on independent genomic DNA extractions and obtained identical results. Two EU1 isolates and the single NA1 isolate were tested for mating type (1) and found to be of A1, A1, and A2 mating type, respectively. The coexistence of A1 and A2 mating types in the same retail nursery suggests the potential for sexual reproduction, as is the case in P. infestans where clonal and sexual populations exist (2), although to date, sexual reproduction in nature has not been documented in P. ramorum. This study reports the results of a screening survey of perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in the Danish environment. The study included point sources (municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants and landfill sites) and the marine and freshwater environments. Effluent and influent water and sewage sludge were analysed for point sources. Sediment, blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and liver from plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), flounder (Platichthys flesus) and eel (Anguilla anguilla) were analysed for the freshwater and marine environments. The results obtained show a diffuse PFCs contamination of the Danish environment with concentrations similar to those measured in other countries with the absence of primary contamination sources such as fluorochemical production. PFOS and PFOA were generally the most dominating PFCs measured in both point sources and the aquatic environments. PFCs were found in both inflow and outflow water and sewage sludge from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), indicating that WWTPs can be significant sources to PFCs in the environment. This is also reflected in the locally elevated PFCs concentrations found in fish like eels from shallow freshwater and marine areas. However, the highest PFCs concentrations found in fish in this study was in plaice from the Skagerrak (156 ng/g wet weight PFOS), but it is unknown if this can be related to significant sources in the North Sea region or to differences between species. The concentrations of PFCs were below the detection limit in all analysed freshwater and marine samples of sediment and mussels. Despite the relatively low PFCs concentrations measured in marine fish, the high bioaccumulation potential of PFCs, particularly PFOS, may lead to high concentrations of PFCs in marine mammals as shown by previous investigations.

Total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and stable isotopes of nitrogen (delta(15)N) and carbon (delta(13)C) were measured in three invertebrate, five fish, three seabird and three marine mammal species of central West Greenland to investigate trophic transfer of mercury in this Arctic marine food web. The food web magnification factor (FWMF) estimated as the slope of the regression between the natural logarithm of THg or MeHg concentrations (mg kg(-1) dw) and tissue delta(15)N ( per thousand) was estimated to 0.183 (SE = 0.052) for THg and 0.339 (SE = 0.075) for MeHg. The FWMFs were not only comparable with those reported for other Arctic marine food webs but also with quite different food webs such as freshwater lakes in the sub-Arctic, East Africa and Papua New Guinea. This suggests similar mechanisms of mercury assimilation and isotopic (delta(15)N) discrimination among a broad range of aquatic taxa and underlines the possibility of broad ecosystem comparisons using the combined contaminant and stable isotope approach.

Sierra Leone suffered from 11 years of civil war (1991-2002) resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and mutilations and massive population displacement. In 2001, ARC International, Sierra Leone, conducted a baseline survey of 244 female youth and 293 male youth on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours around HIV/AIDS and STIs in Port Loko. In 2003, following 2 years of HIV prevention activities, a comparable post-intervention survey of 250 female and 299 male youth was performed. Comparison of baseline and post-intervention results showed that HIV/AIDS knowledge increased dramatically among both groups, with those able to name three effective means of avoiding AIDS increasing from 4% to 36% among female youth, and 4% to 45% among male youth. Reported condom use at last sex increased among female youth from 16% to 46% and among male youth from 16% to 37%. These results demonstrate that, despite the challenges inherent in a post-conflict country, good quality AIDS prevention programmes can be successful.

A questionnaire survey regarding endoparasite control practices in Danish horse herds was carried out in 1995. The participating veterinarians and herd owners were sampled using convenience and purposive sampling. In the analysis of risk factors for development of a high endoparasitic burden (> 200 eggs per gram faeces) 903 horses were sampled and the analysis of the efficiency of a single anthelmintic treatment was based on 605 horses. The following factors had a significant effect on the endoparasitic burden: herd type, age of the horses, use of pasture rotation, anthelmintic treatment of horses visiting the herd, use of an adviser in the planning of endoparasite control and advice regarding pasture rotation. An interaction between pasture rotation and advice regarding pasture rotation was found, but due to high colinearity this was not reported. The factors influencing significantly on the reduction of the faecal egg count after a single anthelmintic treatment were the type of herd, the age of the horse, the drug used, and the anthelmintic-resistance-status of the herd. A negative effect of permanent pastures was observed. If pasture hygiene was performed on the advice of the veterinarian, the effect of a single anthelmintic treatment was less compared to a single anthelmintic treatment without any advice. An interaction between the treatment group and the resistance-status of the herd was found. Additional factors, normally accounted for, when endoparasites and anthelmintic resistance is discussed, were investigated, but not found significant in this study.

A questionnaire survey to obtain information on endoparasite control practices and management on 68 Danish horse farms was undertaken in 1995. The study revealed that foals, young horses and adults were on average, annually treated 4.3, 4.0 and 3.7 times, respectively. The most commonly used drug from 1993-1995 was ivermectin. On average 2.4 different drugs were used annually. The most used method of weight estimation was eye measure: for foals by 78%, for youngsters by 81% and adults by 82% of the herd owners. The most commonly used weight in the dosing of anthelmintics was individual weights of the horse: 72% of the herd owners dosed their foals this way. 76% their youngsters and 75% their adults. Sixty two percent of the herd owners treated at turn out, 47% at housing, 57% treated when buying new horses, 26% treated when stabling visiting horses, 78% applied pasture change and 18% performed alternate/mixed grazing. Sixty one percent of the herds had experienced problems with diarrhoea and in 18% of the cases the suspected cause was considered to be endoparasites. 33% of the farms performed disease registration and on 25% Faecal Egg Count Reduction tests had been performed before entering this study. The herd owners obtained their formation about endoparasite control from veterinarians, meetings and papers in that order of importance.

RESUMO

The incidence of spontaneously occurring deciduomata is considerably higher in T-stock than in (C3H X C57BL)F1 females. The basis for this difference was studied in vivo, by means of embryo transplantation procedure, and in vitro, by means of short-term embryo culture. Both studies indicate that strain differences in the incidence of spontaneous deciduomata may be largely, if not wholly, accounted for by genetic differences between embryos themselves expressed in terms of the rate of development during the preimplantation period and in the ability to survive the preimplantation and early implantation environment.
