RESUMO

We demonstrate the generation of higher-order modulation formats using silicon-based inphase/quadrature (IQ) modulators at symbol rates of up to 100 GBd. Our devices exploit the advantages of silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) integration, which combines silicon-on-insulator waveguides with highly efficient organic electro-optic (EO) cladding materials to enable small drive voltages and sub-millimeter device lengths. In our experiments, we use an SOH IQ modulator with a π-voltage of 1.6 V to generate 100 GBd 16QAM signals. This is the first time that the 100 GBd mark is reached with an IQ modulator realized on a semiconductor substrate, leading to a single-polarization line rate of 400 Gbit/s. The peak-to-peak drive voltages amount to 1.5 Vpp, corresponding to an electrical energy dissipation in the modulator of only 25 fJ/bit.

RESUMO

We demonstrate an optical distance sensor integrated on a silicon photonic chip with a footprint of well below 1 mm2. The integrated system comprises a heterodyne receiver structure with tunable power splitting ratio and on-chip photodetectors. The functionality of the device is demonstrated in a synthetic-wavelength interferometry experiment using frequency combs as optical sources. We obtain accurate and fast distance measurements with an unambiguity range of 3.75 mm, a root-mean-square error of 3.4 µm and acquisition times of 14 µs.

RESUMO

Fully integrated monolithic, multi-channel InP-based coherent receiver PICs and transceiver modules with extended C-band tunability are described. These PICs operate at 33 and 44 Gbaud per channel under dual polarization (DP) 16-QAM modulation. Fourteen-channel monolithic InP receiver PICs show integration and data rate scaling capability to operate at 44 Gbaud under DP 16-QAM modulation for combined 4.9 Tb/s total capacity. Six channel simultaneous operation of a commercial transceiver module at 33 Gbaud is demonstrated for a variety of modulation formats including DP 16-QAM for >1.2Tbit/s aggregate data capacity.

RESUMO

We demonstrate for the first time a waveguide-based frequency shifter on the silicon photonic platform using single-sideband modulation. The device is based on silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) electro-optic modulators, which combine conventional silicon-on-insulator waveguides with highly efficient electro-optic cladding materials. Using small-signal modulation, we demonstrate frequency shifts of up to 10 GHz. We further show large-signal modulation with optimized waveforms, enabling a conversion efficiency of -5.8 dB while suppressing spurious side-modes by more than 23 dB. In contrast to conventional acousto-optic frequency shifters, our devices lend themselves to large-scale integration on silicon substrates, while enabling frequency shifts that are several orders of magnitude larger than those demonstrated with all-silicon serrodyne devices.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) generating four-level amplitude shift keying (4ASK) signals at symbol rates of up to 64 GBd both at room temperature and at an elevated temperature of 80°C. The measured line rate of 128 Gbit/s corresponds to the highest value demonstrated for silicon-based MZM so far. We report bit error ratios of 10-10 (64 GBd BPSK), 10-5 (36 GBd 4ASK), and 4 × 10-3 (64 GBd 4ASK) at room temperature. At 80 °C, the respective bit error ratios are 10-10, 10-4, and 1.3 × 10-2. The high-temperature experiments were performed in regular oxygen-rich ambient atmosphere.

RESUMO

We report on high-speed plasmonic-organic hybrid Mach-Zehnder modulators comprising ultra-compact phase shifters with lengths as small as 19 µm. Choosing an optimum phase shifter length of 29 µm, we demonstrate 40 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation with direct detection and a BER < 6 × 10(-4). Furthermore, we report on a 29 µm long binary-phase shift keying (BPSK) modulator and show that it operates error-free (BER < 1 × 10(-10)) at data rates up to 40 Gbit/s and with an energy consumption of 70 fJ/bit.

RESUMO

We demonstrate silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) electro-optic modulators that enable quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) with high signal quality and record-low energy consumption. SOH integration combines highly efficient electro-optic organic materials with conventional silicon-on-insulator (SOI) slot waveguides, and allows to overcome the intrinsic limitations of silicon as an optical integration platform. We demonstrate QPSK and 16QAM signaling at symbol rates of 28 GBd with peak-to-peak drive voltages of 0.6 V(pp). For the 16QAM experiment at 112 Gbit/s, we measure a bit-error ratio of 5.1 × 10⁻5 and a record-low energy consumption of only 19 fJ/bit.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Enamel matrix proteins (EMP) have recently been introduced as a new modality for regenerative periodontal treatment. However, limited information is available concerning the comparison of the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with enamel matrix proteins and other regenerative treatment alternatives. METHODS: The aim of the present controlled clinical trial was to compare the treatment of deep intrabony periodontal defects with EMP to that with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with bioabsorbable membranes. Sixteen patients, each of whom displayed one pair of intrabony defects located contralaterally in the same jaw, were randomly treated with EMP or with a bioabsorbable membrane. Prior to surgery and 8 months later the following parameters were evaluated by a blinded examiner: Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and clinical attachment level (CAL). Antibiotics (amoxicillin and metronidazole) were given during the first 10 days after surgery. No statistical significant differences in any of the investigated parameters between the 2 groups were observed at baseline. RESULTS: No serious adverse events (e.g., allergic reactions or abscesses) after any of the treatments were noted during the entire observation period. Membrane exposure occurred in 7 out of the 16 GTR treated sites. Clinical examination was performed again 8 months postoperatively. Sites treated with EMP demonstrated a reduction of PD from 8.1+/-1.7 mm to 4.3+/-1.2 mm (P <0.001) and a change in CAL from 10.3+/-1.8 mm to 7.2+/-1.2 mm (P <0.001). The sites treated with GTR showed a reduction of PD from 8.3+/-1.7 mm to 4.3+/-0.7 mm (P <0.001) and a change of CAL from 10.1+/-1.9 mm to 7.1+/-1.7 mm (P <0.001). Both treatment procedures led to significant improvements of PD and CAL. However, no statistically significant differences in any of the investigated parameters were observed between the test and control group. CONCLUSIONS: It may be concluded that both therapies led to shortterm improvements of the investigated clinical parameters. Further studies of much higher power are needed to support equivalence.

RESUMO

Sera from seven patients from whom a C. trachomatis serovar L2 strain was isolated were tested in vitro for their ability to neutralize the infectivity of this organism. In one patient an inguinal lymph node was culture positive, whereas the remaining six patients had positive rectal biopsies. Sera from four of the patients, including the patient with the lymph node isolate, failed to neutralize serovar L2(434). In addition, the homologous strain recovered from the inguinal lymph node was available and was resistant to neutralization by the homologous sera. However, the same sera effectively neutralized a trachoma serovar, E(Bour). All four sera had inclusion immunofluorescent-antibody titers to C. trachomatis serovar L2 of 2,048 to 16,384 and microimmunofluorescent-antibody titers to the lymphogranuloma venereum biovar were equal or higher in all cases than to the 12 serovars of the trachoma biovar. The three remaining sera, while neutralizing the infectivity of the L2 strains tested, neutralized serovar E to a greater extent. These sera had the same inclusion immunofluorescent antibody titers as the sera that failed to neutralize serovar L2. To see whether this difference in the sensitivity of the biovars toward neutralization could be characterized, sera were obtained from mice immunized with different doses of both serovars L2 and E. Sera obtained from mice immunized with serovar E were able to effectively neutralize the homologous strain. In contrast, neutralization of the immunizing strain, L2(UCI-20), was not seen with sera obtained on days 7, 14, and 21 after immunization from animals receiving 8 x 10(5) and 8 x 10(4) inclusion-forming units of L2(UCI-20); however, these same sera neutralized serovar E. However, with a higher immunizing dose of L2 (10(7) IFUs), both E and L2 were neutralized with sera obtained 7 and 14 days after immunization. Therefore, the relative resistance to neutralization by serovar L2 compared with that of serovar E in the mouse model was inoculum dependent.

RESUMO

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a marked beneficial effect in experimental intraabdominal sepsis. Two rat models involving implantation of either rat fecal material or a mixture of pure cultures of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus faecalis, and Bacteroides fragilis were used in this study. A death rate of 100% was obtained in control animals implanted with fecal material; with intermittent hyperbaric oxygen treatment, a death rate of only 8% was observed (P less than .005). With a mixture of pure cultures of clinical pathogens, the death rate in control animals was 79%, and intermittent hyperbaric oxygen treatment reduced the rate to 23% (P less than .005). Data from cultures of blood indicated that the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen was not related to antibacterial activity.

RESUMO

The toxicity of netilmicin was compared with that of amikacin in a randomized, prospective trial in 90 adults with a variety of serious gram-negative infections. There was no instance of antibiotic-related nephrotoxicity in the group given amikacin and only one instance in the group given netilmicin. Cochlear toxicity, as measured by a change in audiogram, occurred in 4/14 (28.5%) of the amikacin recipients and 3/19 (15.8%) of the netilmicin recipients. Vestibular toxicity, as determined by a change in ice-water calorics, was noted in 3/16 (19%) of the amikacin-treated patients and 0/15 of the netilmicin-treated individuals. Despite the trend toward lesser ototoxicity with netilmicin, the differences between the drugs were not statistically significant. There was, however, a significant association between male sex and the development of ototoxicity. Although many patients could not be evaluated for efficacy, there did not appear to be any difference in the therapeutic activity of the two drugs.

RESUMO

Although it is widely recommended that serum levels of aminoglycoside antibiotics be monitored by assay, the justification for this approach has not been clearly presented. A number of studies indicate that serum levels of these agents cannot be predicted reliably on the basis of simple dosage formulae; the major confounding factors being abnormalities of renal function and of extracellular fluid volume in addition to less well defined variables such as fever and anaemia. The influence of haemodialysis and concomitant administration of carbenicillin further complicate dosage estimations in patients with renal insufficiency. On the basis of currently available data, it is reasonable to suggest an optimum range of 5 to 8 microgram/ml for peak serum levels of gentamicin. There are no reliable studies from which to derive a comparable value for trough (pre-dose) concentrations. The relative importance of peak and trough values for nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity is an unresolved subject of controversy. However, it seems possible that neither of these individual values, but rather the 'area under the time-concentration curve' is the major risk factor for toxicity. In view of the unpredictability of serum levels, especially in seriously ill patients in a fluctuating physiological state, periodical serum gentamicin assays should be performed. The main objective of these assays is to ensure that the peak serum levels attained are adequate, but not unnecessarily high.
