Environmental enrichment improves captive animal welfare by reducing stress-related behaviors. Previous studies in a captive colony of stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) reported a reduction of aggression, coprophilia, and stereotypic behaviors after an occupational enrichment program; however, the effect on stress hormones such as glucocorticoids has not been investigated yet. The goal of this study was to compare the effect of sex, age, and social rank on changes in fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (fGCM) after applying two kinds of enrichments (occupational vs. musical) in a captive colony of stumptail macaques. We collected 234 fecal samples from 25 stumptail macaques under the following conditions: (1) basal (no enrichment), (2) three weeks of occupational enrichment, and (3) three weeks of relaxing/classical music. The Generalized Estimated Equation Model showed an increase in fGCM levels after the occupational enrichment only in adult subjects (p = 0.003 compared to basal). The fGCM levels reached by the adults after the occupational enrichment was higher than that of juveniles (p = 0.002) and subadults (p = 0.02). Occupational and musical enrichment decreased fGCM levels only in middle-ranking individuals (p < 0.001 and p = 0.013, respectively). No sex differences were found. In conclusion, there were age and rank differences in individuals' physiological reactivity to the effects of environmental enrichment which need to be considered when planning enrichment programs.

Reactive oxygens species (ROS) are common byproducts of metabolic reactions and could be at the origin of many diseases of the elderly. Here we investigated the role of ROS in the renewal of the intestinal epithelium in mice lacking catalase (CAT) and/or nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT) activities. Cat-/- mice have delayed intestinal epithelium renewal and were prone to develop necrotizing enterocolitis upon starvation. Interestingly, crypts lacking CAT showed fewer intestinal stem cells (ISC) and lower stem cell activity than wild-type. In contrast, crypts lacking NNT showed a similar number of ISCs as wild-type but increased stem cell activity, which was also impaired by the loss of CAT. No alteration in the number of Paneth cells (PCs) was observed in crypts of either Cat-/- or Nnt-/- mice, but they showed an evident decline in the amount of lysozyme. Cat deficiency caused fat accumulation in crypts, and a fall in the remarkable high amount of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) in PCs. Notably, the low levels of ATGL in the intestine of Cat -/- mice increased after a treatment with the antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Supporting a role of ATGL in the regulation of ISC activity, its inhibition halt intestinal organoid development. These data suggest that the reduction in the renewal capacity of intestine originates from fatty acid metabolic alterations caused by peroxisomal ROS.

In this study, 338 microorganisms, comprising 271 bacteria and 67 fungi, were isolated from sediment samples collected from underexplored Pacific and Caribbean regions of Colombia. Screening trials were conducted on selected strains (n = 276) to assess their tolerance to cadmium (Cd2+), lead (Pb2+), and zinc (Zn2+), leading to the identification of six bacteria capable of withstanding 750 mg·L-1 of each heavy metal ion. Three promising microorganisms, identified as Enterobacter sp. INV PRT213, Pseudomonas sp. INV PRT215, and Stenotrophomonas sp. INV PRT216 were selected for lead removal experiments using LB broth medium supplemented with 400 mg·L-1 Pb2+. Among these, Pseudomonas sp. INV PRT215 exhibited significant potential, removing 49% of initial Pb2+ after 240 min of exposure (16.7 g wet biomass·L-1, pH 5, 30 °C). Infrared spectra of Pb-exposed biomass showed changes in functional groups, including carbonyl groups of amides, carboxylate, phosphate, hydroxyl, and amine groups, compared to the not-exposed control. These changes suggested interactions between the metal and functional groups in the biomass. The findings of this study highlight the potential of microorganisms derived from coastal marine environments as promising candidates for future applications in bioremediation of polluted environments contaminated with heavy metals.

Background: Living in urban places has been associated with a higher risk of psychopathology as well as with altered hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and consequently altered cortisol response, but studies have concentrated mainly in high-income countries population. The role of other hormones such as testosterone, implicated in stress response and with human social behaviors, have not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to compare symptoms of psychopathology as well as cortisol and testosterone in response to traumatic images between urban and suburban people in a middle-income country. Methods: A sample of 67 women and 55 men (N = 122, 18-45 years) from urban and suburban places of Mexico participated in the study. We quantified salivary cortisol and testosterone in response to images with traumatic and violent content (basal, 15, 30, and 45 min after images). Participants answered a general information questionnaire and the Symptom Checklist-90-R to assess their psychopathological traits. We performed Generalized Estimating Equation Models to analyze hormonal levels and MANOVAs to compare differences in participants' psychopathology symptoms. Area under the curve respect to ground (AUCG) of hormonal levels and sex differences were also compared. Results: Suburban citizens showed no cortisol response, whereas urban people showed a cortisol peak 15 min after the image's exposure; however, suburban people had higher AUCG and basal levels compared to urban ones. Contrastingly, testosterone levels declined in all participants excepting the urban women, who showed no testosterone response. Although similar testosterone profile, AUCG levels were higher in urban than suburban men. Participants living in suburban areas had higher scores of somatizations, obsessive-compulsive, and interpersonal sensitivity, as well as more sleep disorders than participants living in urban areas. Conclusion: This study offers novel evidence about differences in cortisol and testosterone responses to a social stressor and in mental health indicators between a population of urban and suburban citizens, highlighting the impact of urbanization process on physiological and psychological outcomes in a middle-income country.

The "challenge hypothesis" predicts higher male-male aggressive behavior along with increases in testosterone levels during times of reproductive challenges and social instability. In addition, in some primate species, higher glucocorticoid levels can be observed as well, but this is usually modulated by dominance rank. We studied rank-related aggressive behavior, mating activity, and fecal testosterone and glucocorticoid metabolites (fTm and fGCm) in male stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) in order to test some predictions of the "challenge hypothesis". Over a 20-month period, we collected data on aggressive behavior and copulation, as well as fecal samples (n = 700) to quantify fTm and fGCm in seven adult stumptail males living in captivity. During periods of mating activity, male-to-male aggression increased in higher- and middle-ranking males. Neither fTm nor fGCm levels predicted male-to-male aggression. fGCm levels (but not fTm) were positively associated with male-to-female aggression; however, this association was pronounced during periods of mating activity. fGCm levels differed according to social rank, with middle-ranking males having the highest levels. Both hormones were higher during periods of mating activity, but only in higher- and middle-ranking males. Taken together, our findings partially support the challenge hypothesis in a non-seasonal primate and shed some light on the unique social and mating system of the stumptail macaque.

Abstract Marine Natural Products (MNPs) isolated from samples collected in Colombia have been an object of study since the early 1980's; however, this information is neither integrated nor compiled. This systematic review describes the articles published in scientific journals up to December 2019. 173 papers met the inclusion criteria of focusing on MNPs obtained from specimens collected from Colombian seas; all original papers written in English, Portuguese or Spanish. The selected papers were mostly authored by researchers from Colombian groups, with low interaction amongst themselves. 99.4% of the papers studied samples collected from the Caribbean Sea; 183 species were studied, mainly sponges and octocorals. In this study, 1,690 compounds (238 new ones) were reviewed, mainly diterpenes and sterol derivatives. Of the selected papers, 76.8% measured various biological activities, including antibiotic (34%) and anticancer (30%). These papers were published in 51 journals (74.6% were international). In conclusion, scientific work on natural marine products of Colombian origin has incremented over time. The most relevant opportunities to address and fill existing gaps comprise: exploring Pacific Ocean organisms and several of the misrepresented taxa; promoting strong interactions amongst the MNPs research groups, and accordingly with other areas of knowledge; and having the productive sector participate in MNPs research.
Resumen Los productos naturales marinos (PNM) aislados de muestras recolectadas en Colombia han sido estudiados desde principios de los años 1980, mas esta información no está integrada, ni recopilada. Esta revisión sistemática describe los artículos publicados hasta diciembre de 2019. 173 artículos cumplieron los criterios de inclusión de enfoque en PNM obtenidos de especímenes recolectados en mares colombianos; trabajos originales escritos en inglés, portugués o español. La mayoría de los artículos fueron escritos por investigadores de grupos colombianos, con poca interacción entre ellos. El 99,4% de los artículos estudiaban muestras recolectadas del mar Caribe. Se estudiaron 183 especies, especialmente esponjas y octocorales. Se identificaron 1690 compuestos (238 nuevos), principalmente diterpenos y derivados de esteroles. En el 76,8% de los artículos se midió alguna actividad biológica, principalmente antibiótica (34%) y anticancerígena (30%). Los artículos se publicaron en 51 revistas (74,6% internacionales). En conclusión, la investigación sobre los PNM de origen colombiano ha crecido con el tiempo. Algunas oportunidades para abordar las lagunas encontradas comprenden: explorar los organismos del océano Pacífico y los taxa poco estudiados; promover interacciones entre los grupos de investigación de los PNM y de otras áreas del conocimiento; e involucrar al sector productivo en la investigación de los PMN.

Os artigos analisados foram publicados em 51 periódicos (74,6% internacionais). Em conclusão, o trabalho científico sobre PNM de origem colombiana cresceu ao longo do tempo. As oportunidades mais relevantes para preencher as lacunas existentes incluem: explorar organismos do Oceano Pacífico e os taxa pouco estudados; promover interação entre os grupos de pesquisa de PNMs e com grupos de outras áreas do conhecimento; e envolver o setor produtivo na pesquisa de PNMs.
RESUMO
The thermal mineral water of Peñón de los Baños spa (Mexico City) has been used for over 500 years starting in pre-Hispanic times and is famous for the treatment of various pathologies. It has a temperature of 45 °C, which is rich in HCO3-, and its main trace elements are B, Li and Fe, which confers healing effects. Concerns about the sustainability of this important spa have motivated this study to understand the thermal system, possible hydraulic and hydrochemical changes over time and its implications. Stable water isotope data indicate that the thermal water sources originate from local precipitation at Sierra de las Cruces with a recharge elevation of approximately 2770 m above sea level. The recharged water percolates through volcanic and carbonate rock formations and ascends via fault structure conduits, where it eventually is extracted 25 km downstream in Peñon de los Baños. During the gravity-driven deep circulation of up to 4.9 km, the groundwater is heated up to 136-160 °C. A comparison of past and current water levels and water chemical analyses indicates a water table drop and few variations in the chemical composition, confirming the presence of anthropic impact on water quality. Due to the heavy groundwater extractions in Mexico City, the spring water flow has ceased, and water must be pumped now from a 203-m deep well. In addition, the concentration of bicarbonate, sodium and chloride has been reduced by half since the onset of groundwater development. The therapeutic effects of this thermal mineral water are at risk due to the alteration of the chemical signature. However, new and different therapeutical uses may prevent a future deterioration or closure of this historically important thermal spa. It is crucial to establish a monitoring program of the thermal mineral water and reducing or minimizing nearby urban extractions which tap the regional flow component to preserve the properties of the thermal water.

The diversity of deep-sea cultivable bacteria was studied in seven sediment samples of the Colombian Caribbean. Three hundred and fifty two marine bacteria were isolated according to its distinct morphological character on the solid media, then DNA sequences of the 16S rRNA were amplified to identify the isolated strains. The identified bacterial were arranged in three phylogenetic groups, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria, with 34 different OTUs defined at ≥ 97% of similarity and 70 OTUs at ≥ 98.65%, being the 51% Firmicutes, 34% Proteobacteria and 15% Actinobacteria. Bacillus and Fictibacillus were the dominant genera in Firmicutes, Halomonas and Pseudomonas in Proteobacteria and Streptomyces and Micromonospora in Actinobacteria. In addition, the strains were tested for biosurfactants and lipolytic enzymes production, with 120 biosurfactant producing strains (mainly Firmicutes) and, 56 lipolytic enzymes producing strains (Proteobacteria). This report contributes to the understanding of the diversity of the marine deep-sea cultivable bacteria from the Colombian Caribbean, and their potential application as bioremediation agents.

AIMS: To evaluate the biological activity of extracts from cultures of marine bacteria against Toxoplasma gondii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ethyl acetate extracts obtained from seven marine bacteria were tested against T. gondii GFP-RH and M. tuberculosis H37Rv. The cytotoxicity on HFF-1 cells was measured by a microplate resazurin fluorescent approach, and the haemolytic activity was determined photometrically. The extracts from Bacillus sp. (INV FIR35 and INV FIR48) affected the tachyzoite viability. The extracts from Bacillus, Pseudoalteromonas, Streptomyces and Micromonospora exhibited effects on infection and proliferation processes of parasite. Bacillus sp. INV FIR48 extract showed an minimum inhibitory concentration value of 50 µg ml-1 against M. tuberculosis H37Rv. All the extracts exhibited relatively low toxicity to HFF-1 cells and the primary culture of erythrocytes, except Bacillus sp. INV FIR35, which decreased cell viability under 20%. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis of the most active bacterial extract Bacillus sp. INV FIR48 showed the presence of peptide metabolites related to surfactin. CONCLUSIONS: The extract from culture of deep-sea Bacillus sp. INV FIR48 showed anti-T. gondii and anti-tuberculosis (TB) biological activity with low cytotoxicity. In addition, peptide metabolites were detected in the extract. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Toxoplasmosis and TB are among the most prevalent diseases worldwide, and the current treatment drugs exhibit side effects. This study confirm that marine bacteria are on hand sources of anti-infective natural products.

Biosurfactants are amphiphilic surface-active molecules of microbial origin principally produced by hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria; in addition to the bioremediation properties, they can also present antimicrobial activity. The present study highlights the chemical characterization and the antimicrobial activities of biosurfactants produced by deep-sea marine bacteria from the genera Halomonas, Bacillus, Streptomyces, and Pseudomonas. The biosurfactants were extracted and chemically characterized through Chromatography TLC, FT-IR, LC/ESI-MS/MS, and a metabolic analysis was done through molecular networking. Six biosurfactants were identified by dereplication tools from GNPS and some surfactin isoforms were identified by molecular networking. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of biosurfactant from Halomonas sp. INV PRT125 (7.27 mg L-1) and Halomonas sp. INV PRT124 (8.92 mg L-1) were most effective against the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231. For Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300, the biosurfactant from Bacillus sp. INV FIR48 was the most effective with IC50 values of 25.65 mg L-1 and 21.54 mg L-1 for C. albicans, without hemolytic effect (< 1%), and non-ecotoxic effect in brine shrimp larvae (Artemia franciscana), with values under 150 mg L-1, being a biosurfactant promising for further study. The extreme environments as deep-sea can be an important source for the isolation of new biosurfactants-producing microorganisms with environmental and pharmaceutical use.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have described the epidemiology and clinical behavior of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in South America. The aim of this study was to report on the prevalence, phenotype, and treatment of patients with IBD diagnosis in Capital Department of the Province of Córdoba, Argentina. METHODS: Data from adult patients (≥ 18 years-old) with IBD diagnosis that attended 12 public or private centers between 05/2014 and 05/2019 were included in a common registry. RESULTS: A total of 655 patients were included (females: 53.4%). The ratio of ulcerative colitis (UC) (nâ¯=â¯561) to Crohn's disease (CD) (nâ¯=â¯88) was 6.38, with age-adjusted IBD prevalence being 70.1 (95% confidence interval 70.08-70.12) cases/100,000 habitants. Extraintestinal manifestations were diagnosed in 22.8% of patients, and left-side colitis (46%) was the most frequent extension in UC patients. In CD patients, colonic involvement (55.7%) and non-stricturing/non-penetrating behavior (74%) were the most frequent presentations. Biologic therapy was used in 36.4% of CD patients and 9.1% of UC patients (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: In this population registry study, IBD prevalence was similar to that reported in other series in the region. A higher UC/CD ratio was observed due to the lower prevalence of CD compared to similar studies in South America.

Introducción. El ameloblastoma es un tumor benigno raro, ocasionalmente con comportamiento agresivo, proveniente de las células productoras de esmalte. Localizado con mayor frecuencia en la mandíbula, teniendo su mayor incidencia entre la 4ta 5ta década de la vida, generalmente asintomático, siendo los estudios de imágenes la prueba diagnóstica fundamental. Reporte del caso: Presentamos el caso de una mujer de 43 años con una tumoración en maxilar inferior izquierda de crecimiento progresivo, sin limitación funcional. La TAC de mandíbula muestra una lesión osteolítica y expansiva de bordes definidos, que rompe la cortical anterior infiltrando partes blandas; es sometida a extracción tumoral asociado a curetaje; conjuntamente en la anatomopatológica se identidica Ameloblastoma Acantomatoso. Conclusión: El ameloblastoma Acantomatoso tiene larga sobrevida libre de recurrencia si su diagnóstico es oportuno y su tratamiento es multidisciplinario, incluyendo cirugía y radioterapia, aunque su rareza ocasiona dificultad en encontrar el mejor tratamiento disponible.
Introduction. Ameloblastoma is a rare benign tumor, occasionally with aggressive behavior, originating from enamel-producing cells. Located most frequently in the mandible, having its highest incidence between the 4th 5th decade of life, generally asymptomatic, imaging studies being the fundamental diagnostic test. Case report: We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with a progressively growing tumor in the left lower jaw, without functional limitation. The CT of the mandible shows an osteolytic and expansive lesion with defined edges, which breaks the anterior cortex, infiltrating soft tissues; she is subjected to tumor extraction associated with curettage; jointly in the pathology, Acantomatous Ameloblastoma is identified. Conclusion: Acantomatous ameloblastoma has a long recurrence-free survival if its diagnosis is timely and its treatment is multidisciplinary, including surgery and radiotherapy, although its rarity causes difficulty in finding the best available treatment.

El carcinoma de células renales con translocación (CRT) es un subtipo de carcinoma de células renales (CCR). El presente caso trata de una niña de 11 años con dolor en fosa ilíaca derecha de dos semanas de evolución. Se evidenció tumoración de 2,2 x 1,9 x 2,8 cm en el polo superior del riñón derecho, por ecografía. Luego, fue sometida a nefrectomía radical derecha y a disección ganglionar regional, tras lo cual se diagnosticó CRT subtipo Xp 11.2. Posteriormente, se inició tratamiento de primera línea con pazopanib y quimioterapia concomitante. Esta enfermedad es más frecuente entre los 10 y 15 años. Su pronóstico suele ser mejor comparado al de los adultos. El manejo multidisciplinario asociado a la disponibilidad de medicamentos de primera línea, mejora la sobrevida libre de progresión.
Translocation renal cell carcinoma (t-RCC) is a subtype of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This case is about an 11-year-old with pain in right iliac fossa for two weeks. Tumor of 2.2 x 1.9 x 2.8 cm was evidenced in the upper pole of the right kidney, by ultrasound. Then, she underwent to a right radical nephrectomy and regional lymph node dissection, after which CRT subtype Xp 11.2 was diagnosed. Subsequently, first-line treatment with pazopanib and concomitant chemotherapy was initiated. This disease is more frequent between 10 and 15 years. Their prognosis is usually better compared to adults. The multidisciplinary management associated with the availability of first-line medications improves progression-free survival.

The relationship between the mechanisms that underlie longevity and aging and the metabolic alterations due to feeding conditions has not been completely defined. In the present work, through the deletion of the gene encoding catalase, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was uncovered as a relevant regulator of longevity and of liver metabolism. Mice lacking catalase (Cat-/-) fed ad libitum with a regular diet showed a shorter lifespan than wild type mice, which correlated with reduced body weight, blood glucose levels and liver fat accumulation, but not with increased oxidative damage or consistent premature aging. High fat diet (HFD) and fasting increased oxidative damage in the liver of wild type animals but, unexpectedly, this was not the case for that of Cat-/- mice. Interestingly, although HFD feeding similarly increased the body weight of Cat-/- and wild-type mice, hyperglycemia and liver steatosis did not develop in the former. Fat accumulation due to fasting, on the other hand, was diminished in mice lacking catalase, which correlated with increased risk of death and low ketone body blood levels. Alteration in expression of some metabolic genes in livers of catalase deficient mice was consistent with reduced lipogenesis. Specifically, Pparγ2 expression up-regulation in response to a HFD and down-regulation upon fasting was lower and higher, respectively, in livers of Cat-/- than of wild type mice, and a marked decay was observed during Cat-/- mice aging. We propose that catalase regulates lipid metabolism in the liver by an evolutionary conserved mechanism that is determinant of lifespan without affecting general oxidative damage.

Stress response is associated with increased activity in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis. Chronic stress-induced elevation in cortisol may alter its own negative regulation with multiple long-term consequences for physical and psychological health. One of the most reliable physical traits associated with mental, apparent physical health, and competitiveness is the degree of facial fluctuating asymmetry. However, to our knowledge there are no studies regarding the relationship between cortisol levels, facial symmetry and male competitiveness, and how cortisol changes after a stressful test depending on these traits. Here, a group of 100 college men were photographed to obtain their facial asymmetry levels. They then, answered the perceived stress scale and the intrasexual competition test and donated two saliva samples (pre-and post-test sample) to measure the change in their cortisol levels after a stressful test. We found that basal cortisol levels were positively correlated with both perceived stress and competitiveness, but not with facial fluctuating asymmetry. Cortisol levels increased in most symmetrical men after a short stressful test, but it decreased in most asymmetrical men. The results suggest differences in endocrine responses according to facial fluctuating asymmetry in men and how these responses could be related to the maintenance of social status.

RESUMEN Objetivo Analizar los resultados con respecto a la reactividad del cortisol (RC) ante un paradigma de estrés experimental en adultos con o sin algún trastorno psiquiátrico que sufrieron violencia en etapas tempranas de desarrollo (infancia y adolescencia temprana) y con ello proponer una herramienta clínica para el establecimiento de indicadores biológicos de estrés. Métodos Se realizó una revisión sistemática en diversas bases de datos, siguiendo los criterios PRISMA; de un total de 231 artículos, 16 cumplieron los criterios de inclusión y los resultados fueron analizados de manera cualitativa. Resultados A pesar de la heterogeneidad, los resultados sugieren que las personas que sufrieron violencia temprana presentan un patrón de baja RC. Contrariamente, la población que además desarrolló síntomas de trastorno de estrés postraumático y depresión, independientemente del tipo de violencia, mostró incrementada RC. La mayoría de los trabajos se centraron en población que sufrió abuso sexual en la infancia y la mitad de los artículos apoya la hipótesis de que la RC es más pronunciada en hombres que en mujeres. Conclusiones Los resultados de esta revisión nos permiten sugerir que es posible considerar la hiperreactividad del cortisol como un biomarcador para el tratamiento e intervención de población con trastorno de estrés postraumático y depresión que sufrieron violencia temprana. Además, apoyan la evidencia de que sufrir violencia altera la respuesta del estrés y la salud mental a largo plazo. Sin embargo, es necesario realizar más estudios principalmente los que se refieren a la hiporreactividad y a las diferencias de género.
ABSTRACT Objective Analyze results with respect to cortisol reactivity (CR) in experimental stress paradigms in adults with or without a psychiatric disorder who suffered violence in early developmental stages (infancy or early adolescence); and use these results to propose a clinical tool to determine biological stress indicators. Methods A systematic review was conducted using several databases and following PRISMA criteria; of a total of 231 articles, 16 satisfied the inclusion criteria and the results were analyzed qualitatively. Results Despite heterogeneity, the results suggested that the people who suffered violence at an early age present a pattern of low CR. In contrast, people who also developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, regardless of the type of violence, showed increased CR. The majority of studies focused on people who suffered childhood sexual abuse and half of the articles supported the hypothesis that CR is more pronounced in men than in women. Conclusions The results of this review suggest that cortisol hyperreactivity can be considered a biomarker for treatment and intervention in people with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression who suffered violence at an early age. The results also support evidence that experiencing violence alters stress response and mental health in the long term. However, it is necessary to conduct more studies, in particular studies on hyporeactivity and gender differences.
RESUMO Objetivo Analisar os resultados da reatividade do cortisol segundo um modelo de estresse experimental em adultos com ou sem transtorno psiquiátrico que foram precocemente expostos à violência durante o desenvolvimento (infância e início da adolescência) e propor um instrumento clínico para determinar indicadores biológicos de estresse. Métodos Uma revisão sistemática foi conduzida em diferentes bases de dados conforme os critérios PRISMA. Dos 231 artigos selecionados, 16 satisfizeram os critérios de inclusão. Foi realizada uma análise qualitativa dos resultados. Resultados Apesar de serem heterogêneos, os resultados indicam que adultos com exposição precoce à violência apresentam baixa reatividade do cortisol. De maneira oposta, os indivíduos que desenvolveram sintomas de transtorno de estresse pós-traumático e depressão, independentemente do tipo de violência sofrida, apresentaram elevada reatividade do cortisol. A maioria dos estudos se centrou em vítimas de abuso sexual na infância e, em metade dos artigos, sustentou-se a hipótese de que a reatividade do cortisol é mais acentuada no sexo masculino que no feminino. Conclusões Os resultados deste estudo de revisão apontam que se pode considerar a hiper-reatividade do cortisol como biomarcador para o tratamento e a intervenção de pacientes que foram expostos precocemente à violência e que apresentam transtorno de estresse pós-traumático e depressão. Além disso, é reforçada a evidência de que sofrer violência afeta a resposta ao estresse e a saúde mental a longo prazo. Porém, fazem-se necessários mais estudos, sobretudo investigando hiporreatividade e diferenças de gênero.

Se realizó un estudio de las condiciones del procesamiento del café de exportación en 15 beneficios, ubicados en Chiriquí, región occidental de Panamá. Además se analizaron 21 muestras de café procesado (grano verde), provenientes de los beneficios. Las muestras fueron analizadas microbiológicamente y se cuantificaron las Aflatoxinas totales (B1, B2, G1 y G2) y Ocratoxina A (OTA), mediante el método de inmunoafinidad ELISA. Se determinó un límite de detección de 0,017 ng/mL, para la Ocratoxina A, lo que equivale a una concentración de 0,829 μg/kg en la muestra, y un límite de detección de 0,027 ng/mL, para las Aflatoxinas totales, lo que equivale a una concentración de 1,350 μg/kg de Aflatoxinas totales. En la muestra, se encontró que cuatro de las 21 (19%) resultaron positivas a la presencia de Ocratoxina A y tres, a la presencia de Aflatoxinas totales (14%). Las muestras presentaron niveles de Ocratoxina A en el rango de 4,90-37,73 μg/kg; sólo tres de ellas superaron el límite máximo permitido por la Unión Europea, para la concentración de Ocratoxina, que es de 5,0 μg/kg. Las Aflatoxinas totales se encontraron en el rango de 1,51- 1,93 μg/kg, por debajo de los 10 μg/kg, que es el límite máximo permitido en el café por la Unión Europea. Los resultados nos indican que el procesamiento de café producido en Panamá cumple satisfactoriamente con los estándares internacionales de manejo poscosecha, lo que conduce a una baja incidencia de hongos productores de micotoxinas y niveles muy bajos de micotoxinas.

MYC is a transcription factor that regulates many critical genes for cell proliferation, differentiation, and biomass accumulation. MYC is one of the most prevalent oncogenes found to be altered in human cancer, being deregulated in about 50 % of tumors. Although MYC deregulation has been more frequently associated to lymphoma and lymphoblastic leukemia than to myeloid malignancies, a body of evidence has been gathered showing that MYC plays a relevant role in malignancies derived from the myeloid compartment. The myeloid leukemogenic activity of MYC has been demonstrated in different murine models. Not surprisingly, MYC has been found to be amplified or/and deregulated in the three major types of myeloid neoplasms: acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative neoplasms, including chronic myeloid leukemia. Here, we review the recent literature describing the involvement of MYC in myeloid tumors.
