RESUMO

We compared pregnancy rates of beef cows subjected to the traditional Syncro-Mate-B protocol or the new Ovsynch protocol and timed insemination. Multiparous Angus cows (n = 436) were stratified by age, postpartum interval, and AI sire and were randomly divided into two treatment groups for synchronization of estrus/ovulation. Approximately half of the cows (n = 216) received the traditional Syncro-Mate-B protocol with 48-h calf removal from the time of implant removal until breeding. The remaining cows (n = 220) received the Ovsynch protocol, which consists of an injection of GnRH (100 microg) on d -10, an injection of PGF2alpha (25 mg) and 48-h calf removal on d -3, another injection of GnRH and calf return on d -1, and timed insemination 24 h later (d 0). Blood samples were collected from all cows before treatment to identify anestrous and cyclic females. Pregnancy rates were higher (P < .025) for Ovsynch-treated cows (54%) than for Syncro-Mate-B-treated cows (42%). Pregnancy rates of cyclic Ovsynch-treated cows (59%) were higher (P < .005) than pregnancy rates of cyclic Syncro-Mate-B-treated cows (38%). Pregnancy rates of anestrous cows also tended to favor synchronization with the Ovsynch protocol. From these data, we conclude that the Ovsynch protocol is capable of inducing a fertile ovulation in cyclic and anestrous beef cows and that pregnancy rates to a timed insemination are higher than those obtained with synchronization of estrus using Syncro-Mate-B.

RESUMO

The effectiveness of two estrus-detection methods (visual observation and radiotelemetric, pressure-sensitive, rump-mounted devices) was compared in peripubertal, crossbred yearling beef heifers. Heifers (n = 50) were fitted with a pressure-sensitive device affixed to their rumps to which a battery-operated radio transmitter was connected. Activation of the sensor sent a radiotelemetric signal to a microcomputer via a fixed radio antenna. Heifer identification, date, time, and duration of standing events were recorded. Estrus was synchronized by feeding melengestrol acetate (MGA) for 14 d and then injecting PGF2 alpha 17 d after the last daily dose of MGA. Following the injection of PGF2 alpha, heifers were observed visually for signs of estrus at 0730 and 1630 (45 min each). Estrus was detected in 41 of 49 heifers (one lost the device) by visual observation and(or) the radiotelemetric device. Number of standing events during estrus, determined by the radiotelemetric device, averaged 50.1 +/- 6.4 per heifer, with the duration of estrus ranging from 2.6 to 26.2 h (average = 14 +/- .8 h). Visual observation failed to detect 11 of 41 heifers (37%) that were detected by the radiotelemetric device. Heifers with fewer standing events (19.3 vs 60.5; P < .001) and estrus of shorter duration (8.4 vs 15.6 h; P < .001) were those not identified by visual observation. Based on intervals between the first detected standing event of estrus and time of insemination, a wide window of fertility seems to exist in some heifers. Radiotelemetric devices were useful in identifying a greater (P < .05) proportion (100%) of heifers in estrus (increased efficiency) compared with visual observation (73%). However, accuracy of both methods was similar.

RESUMO

Yearling beef heifers (n=193) were used to evaluate reproductive performance attained with 2 MGA-PGF2alpha synchronization systems. These treatments were compared with an untreated control group. The 14-d MGA heifers were synchronized by feeding 0.5 mg MGA/h/d for 14 d. At 17 d after the last MGA feeding, these heifers were injected with PGF2alpha (25 mg, im). Heifers in the 7-d MGA treatment group were fed 0.5 mg MGA/h/d for 7 d and received a 25-mg, im injection of PGF2alpha on the last day of the MGA feeding period. Heifers in all 3 treatment groups were observed for estrus every 12 h for 7 d beginning 24 h after the PGF2alpha injection. Heifers observed in estrus during this 7-d period were artificially inseminated approximately 12 h after the onset of estrus. The percentages of heifers in estrus during the 7-d synchronized period were 75.4, 56.3 and 17.2% for the 14-d MGA, 7-d MGA and control groups, respectively. The estrous responses were significantly different in each treatment. The percentage of heifers in estrus during the peak 24-h period was higher (P<0.05) in heifers synchronized with the 14-d MGA system than in heifers synchronized with the 7-d MGA system (75.5 vs 50.0%). The synchronized conception rate of the 14-d MGA heifers was significantly higher (65.3%) than that of both the 7-d MGA (41.7%) and control (45.4%) heifers. Synchronized conception rates were similar (P=0.79) in the 7-d MGA and control treatments. Synchronized pregnancy rates were 55.2, 32.4 and 15.2% for the 14-d MGA, 7-d MGA and control groups, respectively. Both synchronization treatments resulted in significantly higher synchronized pregnancy rates compared with that of the controls. The synchronized pregnancy rate was higher (P<0.05) in the 14-d MGA group than it was in the 7-d MGA group. The mean day of conception within the breeding season was 11.5 and 9.3 d shorter in the 14-d MGA heifers than in the 7-d MGA and control heifers, respectively. Our results indicate that using the 14-d MGA system to synchronize estrus in beef heifers results in better reproductive performance than that attained in heifers synchronized with the 7-d MGA system or in control heifers.

RESUMO

Records on 3873 calvings over a 21-year period (1971 to 1991) from the Colorado State University Resident Instruction beef cattle herd were used to examine factors associated with malpresentations at birth. Approximately 82% of the calvings were unassisted and 18% were assisted in some manner. Of the assisted deliveries, severe traction, mild traction, malpresentation and caesarean section accounted for 44.5, 31.8, 22.4 and 1.3%, respectively, of the total. Ninety-six percent of all births were normal presentations and 4% were malpresentations. The incidence of malpresentations was affected by year, sex of calf, and sire of calf within breed. Most of the malpresentations were in the posterior dorsal position (72.8%) followed by unilateral carpal or shoulder flexion (11.4%), breech (8.2%), lateral deviation of the head (2.5%), incomplete extension of the elbow (1.9%), posterior ventral (1.3%), transverse (1.3%) and oblique ventro-vertical (0.6%). Factors influencing the incidence of posterior dorsal presentations were year, sex of calf, sire of calf within breed, and age of dam. Malpresentation heritability estimates as traits of the calf were 0.088 and 0.003 for Hereford and Angus breeds, respectively. Posterior presentation heritability estimates for Hereford and Angus cattle were 0.173 and 0.0, respectively. Heritabilities as traits of the dam and repeatabilities for malpresentation, and posterior presentation were minimal.

RESUMO

In the spring of 1986, 506 beef cows were used to evaluate the effectiveness of two estrus synchronization systems. Cows were synchronized with either a 6-mg Norgestomet implant placed in the ear for 14 d followed by a 6-mg Alfaprostol injection given 16 d after implant removal (Norgestomet-Alfaprostol) or with Syncro-Mate B (6-mg Norgestomet implant for 9 d with an injection containing 5 mg estradiol valerate and 3 mg Norgestomet at the time of implantation). The Alfaprostol injection in the Norgestomet-Alfaprostol group was given the same day as implant removal in the Syncro-Mate B group. These treatment groups were compared to a group of untreated controls. Cows were allotted to treatments by days postpartum, age and breed. Syncro-Mate B cows had a higher estrous response within 5 d after treatment (78.6 vs 64.0%) and a shorter interval to estrus (39.2 vs 66.7 h) than did Norgestomet-Alfaprostol cows (P < 0.05). Controls had a significantly lower estrous response compared to either of the synchronized groups (27.1%). The degree of estrus synchrony was identical in both synchronization systems (72.7%). Synchronized conception rate tended to be higher (P = 0.06) in the Norgestomet-Alfaprostol cows than in the Syncro-Mate B cows (74.5 vs 62.5%). Synchronized, 21-d, 25-d and breeding season pregnancy rates were 51.2, 70.8, 76.8 and 92.9% for Norgestomet-Alfaprostol cows; 48.5, 63.0, 73.2 and 87.8% for Syncro-Mate B cows; and 15.6, 56.3, 61.3 and 86.9% for control cows. The four pregnancy rates were not different between the two synchronization treatments (P > 0.10). Controls had lower synchronized and 25-d pregnancy rates when compared to either of the synchronized groups (P < 0.05). Days postpartum had no effect on the reproductive performance of cows synchronized with Norgestomet-Alfaprostol. Our results indicate that the Norgestomet-Alfaprostol system is as effective as Syncro-Mate B in synchronizing estrus in beef cows.

RESUMO

Three hundred and ten yearling heifers of various breeds were used in five trials to compare two estrus synchronization treatments. Treatment 1 consisted of Melengestrol Acetate-Prostaglandin F(2)alpha (MGA-PGF(2)alpha). Heifers were fed 0.5 mg MGA/head/d for 14 to 16 d. Sixteen or 17 d after the final MGA feeding, heifers were injected i.m. with 25 mg PGF(2)alpha. Treatment 2 consisted of Syncro-Mate B (SMB). Heifers were given a 9-d norgestomet implant plus an injection containing 3 mg norgestomet and 5 mg estradiol valerate i.m. at implant insertion. Heifers were observed for estrus at 6-h intervals for 120 h after the end of treatments and were artificially inseminated 12 to 18 h after observed estrus. Heifers synchronized with MGA-PGF(2)alpha and SMB had a similar (P > 0.10) estrous response (83.4 vs 90.2%) and a similar (P > 0.10) degree of synchrony (71.8 vs 79.0%) following treatment. However, the synchronized conception rate (68.7 vs 40.6%) and the synchronized pregnancy rate (57.3 vs 36.6%) were higher (P < 0.01) in MGA-PGF(2)alpha than SMB heifers. Breeding season pregnancy rates were similar in both treatment groups. Heifers in both groups that were classified as cycling prior to initiation of treatment had improved reproductive performance following synchronization compared with those classified as noncycling. Based on higher synchronized conception and pregnancy rates and lower labor requirements and drug costs, the MGA-PGF(2)alpha system appears to be a better method to synchronize estrus in beef heifers than the SMB system.

RESUMO

One hundred thirty-five crossbred heifers were used to compare the effectiveness of Estrumate and Syncro-Mate B in synchronizing estrus in recipient heifers for transfer of demi-embryos. A higher percentage (P<0.01) of Syncro-Mate B heifers showed estrus within 5 d following treatment than did Estrumate heifers (100.0 vs 85.1%). Demi-embryos were transferred to 41 and 26 heifers treated with Syncro-Mate B and Estrumate, respectively. The pregnancy rate of heifers synchronized with Estrumate was higher (P<0.01) than that of heifers synchronized with Syncro-Mate B (64.3 vs 27.8%). A single blood sample was collected on the day of embryo transfer from all heifers receiving demi-embryos, and progesterone concentration was determined. There were no significant differences in mean serum progesterone concentrations either between heifers synchronized with Syncro-Mate B and Estrumate or between pregnant and open heifers within synchronization treatment. There was no relationship between serum progesterone concentration and pregnancy rate in the Estrumate recipients (P>0.10). However, 25.0% of the Syncro-Mate B recipients had serum progesterone levels <1.00 ng/ml, and these heifers had a lower pregnancy rate (P<0.05) than Syncro-Mate B heifers with serum progesterone levels between 1.00 to 3.00 ng/ml. It appears that the Syncro-Mate B heifers with <1.00 ng/ml progesterone had either a delay in corpora lutea function or a continuously reduced concentration of serum progesterone which altered the uterine environment of these heifers and caused the lower pregnancy rate in the Syncro-Mate B group. Based on the large difference in pregnancy rates, Estrumate appears to be a more effective method to synchronize estrus in recipient heifers receiving demi-embryos.
