RESUMO

Much higher risk of cancer has been found in diabetes patients. Insulin receptor (IR) and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) have been extensively studied in both breast cancer and diabetes therapies. Interestingly, a recent study proposed that IR/IGF1R ratio is an important factor for breast cancer prognosis. Women with higher IR/IGF1R ratio showed poor breast cancer prognosis as well as hyperinsulinemia. Here, we propose a novel mechanism that oncogenic protein TRIP-Br1 renders breast cancer cells and insulin deficient mice to have higher IR/IGF1R ratio by positively and negatively regulating IR and IGF1R expression at the protein level, respectively. TRIP-Br1 repressed IR degradation by suppressing its ubiquitination. Meanwhile, TRIP-Br1 directly interacts with both IGF1R and NEDD4-1 E3 ubiquitin ligase, in which TRIP-Br1/NEDD4-1 degrades IGF1R via ubiquitin/proteasome system. TRIP-Br1-mediated higher IR/IGF1R ratio enhanced the proliferation and survival of breast cancer cells. In conclusion, current study may provide an important information in the regulatory mechanism of how breast cancer cells have acquired higher IR/IGF1R ratio.

RESUMO

In this Letter, we report Ge p-i-n avalanche photodetectors (APD) with low dark current (sub 1 µA below V(R)=5 V), low operating voltage (avalanche breakdown voltage=8-13 V), and high multiplication gain (440-680) by exploiting a point defect healing method (between 600°C and 650°C) and optimizing the doping concentration of the intrinsic region (p-type ~10¹7 cm⁻³). In addition, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical capacitance voltage analyses were performed to investigate the junction interfaces in more detail. This successful demonstration of Ge p-i-n APD with low dark current, low operating voltage, and high gain is promising for low-power and high-sensitivity Ge PD applications.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a linearized Y-fed directional coupler (DC) modulator based on an electro-optic (EO) polymer waveguide. The spurious free dynamic range of 119 dB/Hz2/3, which is 11 dB higher than that of the conventional Mach-Zehnder modulator, is achieved by introducing the reversed Δß technique in the two-section Y-fed DC. The in-device EO coefficient (r33) of the fabricated device is as high as 79 pm/V in 1.55 µm wavelength, which is 88% of a single film r33 of LPD-80/APC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Zinc is known to play an important role for growth and development, the immune response, neurological function, and reproduction. Although the etiology of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is unknown, zinc deficiency may be implicated in the pathogenesis of BMS. The aim of this study was to demonstrate a causal relationship between zinc deficiency and BMS and to assess whether zinc replacement is an effective therapy for BMS. METHODS: Serum zinc level was evaluated in 276 patients with BMS. To assess the therapeutic effect of zinc replacement, patients with zinc deficiency were administered a zinc supplement (14.1 mg/day). Pain intensity 6 months after zinc replacement was evaluated using an 11-point numerical scale. We also developed an animal model of zinc deficiency to assess the effects of zinc deficiency on the oral mucosa. RESULTS: Of the 276 patients with BMS, 74 (26.8%) had low serum zinc levels. Zinc replacement therapy lowered the mean numerical pain scale in these patients from 8.1 to 4.1, compared with a mean decrease from 7.7 to 6.7 in a control group (P = 0.004). In our animal model of zinc deficiency, the main pathologic findings were hyperkeratinization and increased mitosis on the dorsum of the tongue, although there were no gross oral mucosal lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Zinc deficiency might play a role in some patients with BMS. In such patients, appropriate zinc replacement therapy is effective in relieving symptoms.

RESUMO

A bias-free two-section Y-branch directional coupler modulator with high linearity based on domain-inverted modulation is fabricated and tested. 25 wt.% AJLS102/APC is used as an active core layer with an experimentally confirmed device r(33) value of 56 pm/V at 1.59 microm. The fabricated device shows an extinction voltage of 4 V. A two-tone test is performed to demonstrate 64 dB distortion suppression at 25% modulation depth, which is 22 dB higher than a conventional Mach-Zehnder modulator.
