RESUMO

Objective: Although some previous studies have investigated health in police officers, investigations of related factors have been limited to work-related associations or those affecting certain police officers. To address this gap, this study investigated relationships between sociodemographic factors, work-related factors, health behaviors, health conditions, and self-rated bad health (SRBH) in Korean police officers. Methods: In 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional survey in cooperation with the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA). The respondents were 6,591 police officers aged 21-60 years, all of whom agreed to complete the survey online using the police agency's intranet. After collecting data, we conducted a multiple logistic regression analysis to examine factors that were associated with SRBH, with calculations for adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). The study model included a range of individual socioeconomic characteristics, work-related variables, health behaviors, and health conditions. Results: Although the associated factors varied according to age group, several factors generally related to SRBH, including the lack of exercise, stress, having one or more chronic diseases, and work-related pain. By contrast, neither sex nor sleep duration were associated with SRBH of respondents. Monthly night work, smoking, and alcohol consumption were only associated with SRBH of certain age groups. Conclusions: Several variables clearly related to SRBH of police officers. In this context, health-related associations, especially stress and chronic diseases, tended to differ according to age, including those that should be considered to improve health. These findings have important implications for relevant healthcare programs and interventions.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study investigated the residential, area-specific prevalence and associated factors of suicidal ideation among adolescents in South Korea, based on nationally representative data. Methods: A secondary analysis was performed using the database of the 17th Korean Youth Health Behavior Survey, which contained data from 54,848 adolescents. Results: Female adolescents (more influential in counties), low economic status (more influential in metropolitan cities), perceived stress (more influential in metropolitan cities), depression (more influential in counties), loneliness (more influential in counties), and anxiety (more influential in counties) were influencing factors in all areas, and the factors associated with suicidal ideation differed by residential area. The factors related to suicidal ideation were similar by residential area, but the degree of relevance differed from area to area; in particular, the prevalence of variables related to mental health (depression, loneliness, and anxiety) was high in counties. Alcohol drinking was significant only in small- and medium-sized cities in terms of suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Suicide prevention programs for adolescents should be implemented given the higher incidence of suicidal ideation among female adolescents, the greater influence of mental health-related variables in counties, and the influence of smoking in cities. There were differences in the prevalence and risk factors of suicidal ideation by residential areas.

RESUMO

This study aimed to identify whether smoking cessation attempts (SCA) for health promotion changed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and how the characteristics of people who undertook SCA before versus during COVID-19 differed. This was a secondary data analysis of the South Korean 2019-2021 Community Health Survey data for 163,334 smokers that compared sociodemographic factors, health behaviors, and health status by SCA and year using χ2 statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis. The SCA rate significantly decreased from 72.6 % in 2019 to 44.1 % in 2021. In 2019, the rate was high for those over 60 years old but decreased by half by 2021. The ORs for SCA were higher in women than men in all years and were lower in 2019 for all age groups except those in their 70 s; however, in 2021, the ORs for those in their 20 s were higher than those in their 70 s and were slightly higher for non-high-risk drinkers than for high-risk drinkers. ORs were higher among those trying to lose or gain weight than among those who were not. Despite its health benefits, the SCA rate significantly decreased. Issuing public statements encouraging SCA is critical. Measures are necessary to increase the rate of SCA among people in their 70 s and support those seeking to control their weight for successful smoking cessation. In addition, a strategy to maintain the SCA rate in people in their 20 s is required to ensure their future health.

RESUMO

The anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) avulsion fracture accompanying an ankle fracture can compromise ankle stability, necessitating accurate evaluation and a clear understanding of its pathophysiology.. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and Lauge-Hansen, Wagstaffe classification. A retro-prospective study was conducted at a university-affiliated tertiary care medical center. We selected 128 patients who underwent surgery at our institution between January 2013 and July 2017 and analyzed the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and the foot position. According to the modified Wagstaffe classification system, there were 39 cases of type II, followed by 9 cases of type III and 8 cases of type IV. Of the7 pronation-abduction fractures, 3 were AITFL avulsion fracture (43%), while of the 21 pronation-external rotation fractures, 9 were AITFL avulsion fracture (43%). Of the 95 supination-external rotation fractures, there were 56 cases (59%) of AITFL avulsion fractures. Of the pronation fractures, 0% were fibular avulsion fractures and 43% were tibial avulsion fractures. Of the supination fractures, 44% were fibular avulsion fractures and 16% were tibial avulsion fracture. The difference in the ratio of fibular to tibial avulsion fractures between pronation and supination fractures was significant (p < .001). These results suggest that tibial avulsion fractures of type IV in the modified Wagstaffe classification and pronation fractures occur due to collision with the anterolateral corners of the distal bone when the talus externally rotates. Moreover, in cases of pronation fractures, a new type of AITFL avulsion fracture has been observed.

RESUMO

Allium ulleungense (AU) and A. microdictyon (AM) are valuable medicinal and edible vegetables, referred to as mountain garlic in Korea. The identification of AU, AM and a neighboring species A. ochotense (AO) is difficult because of their morphological similarities. We collected samples from three species and 46 cultivated collections to understand the genetic diversity of these valuable Allium species. Among them, we sequenced six collections, including three species and three cultivating collections to obtain data from the plastid genome (plastome) and nuclear 45S ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) for super-barcoding. The AM and AO showed around 60 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 39 Insertion/Deletion (InDels) in the plastome but no variations in the nrDNA sequences. Conversely, the AU and AM showed more than 170 SNPs and 80 InDels in the plastomes, and 20 SNPs and 1 InDel were found in the 45S nrDNA sequences. Among the three cultivating collections, one TB collection was determined to be the AU type in both plastome and nrDNA sequences. However, the other two collections, JB and SA, showed the AM type plastome but were heterozygous in the 45S nrDNA sequences, indicating both AU and AM types (putative AM x AU hybrid). Ten molecular markers were developed based on sequence variations to identify these three species and assess their genetic diversity. A total of 49 collections were genotyped using the ten developed markers and classified into five groups: 14 AU, 22 AM, 1 AO, 3 putative AM x AU hybrids, and 9 putative AU x AM hybrid collections. Super-barcoding with plastomes and nrDNAs revealed the genetic diversity of the three Allium species and putative hybrids between species. The newly developed markers will facilitate species and hybrid identification, thereby benefiting marker-assisted molecular breeding of Allium species.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As many older people spend their time in residential care facilities, the demand for person-centered care (PCC), which affects their quality of life, is increasing. Many residential care facility residents have cognitive problems, such as dementia and strokes. Providing quality care upholds their rights as human beings. Currently, the PCC tools used in South Korea are only translations of foreign tools into Korean, so it is necessary to develop tools for older adult care facilities that reflect the reality of Korean care facilities for older adults. This study aims to develop a tool for measuring PCC in residential care facilities for older people from the perspectives of care givers. METHODS: The draft of 34 questions was developed through literature reviews, interviews with LTC practitioners and researchers. This developed questionnaire was then administered to 402 direct caregivers working in the residential care facilities because many of the residents had cognitive problems. By measuring the interrater reliability, the items with high levels of agreement were selected and the validity of the construct was checked through factor analysis. To determine whether the domains adequately measured each concept, we calculated correlation coefficients and Cronbach's α. RESULTS: Four domains and 32 items concerning service conditions, resident's right to self-determination, a comfortable living environment for all residents, and resident and staff satisfaction are derived, thus explaining 24.7%, 23.6%, 14.6%, and 8.00% of the total variance, respectively. Cronbach's alphas for each domain are 0.965, 0.948, 0.652, and 0.525, respectively, thus demonstrating internal consistency. The inter-rater agreement is high (66.7%~100.0%). The correlation between service conditions and resident's right to self-determination (r = 0.643, p < 0.001), a comfortable living environment for all residents, resident and staff satisfaction (r = 0.674, p < 0.001), and resident's right to self-determination and comfortable living environment (r = 0.695, p < 0.001) is strong. CONCLUSIONS: It is important that caregivers recognize PCC and provide services. When evaluating the residential care services, measuring the degree of PCC should be made compulsory. If the facility becomes more person-centered, it will be possible to promote quality of life for older people. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

RESUMO

Background/Aims: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection highly correlates with erythematous/exudative gastritis, which is one of the endoscopic findings of the Sydney classification system. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between endoscopic severity of erythematous/exudative gastritis and H. pylori infection. Methods: We prospectively enrolled asymptomatic adults who were diagnosed with erythematous/exudative gastritis during screening esophagogastroduodenoscopy. A rapid urease test was performed in all participants to diagnose H. pylori infection. The severity of erythematous/exudative gastritis was determined based on the Sydney classification system. Two investigators independently evaluated the endoscopic findings. The primary endpoint was H. pylori infection rate according to the severity of erythematous/exudative gastritis (mild vs. moderate-to-severe). Results: A total of 177 patients with erythematous/exudative gastritis were included. The rate of H. pylori infection was 86.4% in all patients. Of 177 included patients, 78 were at mild degree, 48 were at moderate degree, and 51 were at severe degree. The inter-observer variation was 4.6% and kappa value was 0.593. H. pylori infection rate was similar between patients with mild erythematous/exudative gastritis and those with moderate-to-severe erythematous/exudative gastritis (91.0% vs. 82.8%, p=0.115). Even after adjusting potential confounding variables, the severity of erythematous/exudative gastritis was not associated with H. pylori infection rate. Conclusions: H. pylori infection is commonly observed in patients with erythematous/exudative gastritis. However, the severity of erythematous/exudative gastritis is not associated with H. pylori infection rate.

RESUMO

It is known that approximately 10% of successful quitters relapse annually. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to long-term smoking relapse in individuals who succeeded in maintaining smoking cessation for 6 months after attending a regional smoking cessation program. This study enrolled 943 individuals registered for the regional smoking cessation program at the Busan Smoking Cessation Center in 2018-2019 who maintained smoking cessation for 6 months. A survey was conducted using a smartphone link or through phone calls, and the data for 305 participants who finally completed the survey were analyzed. The questionnaire addressed individual, inter-individual, organizational, and community-level factors related to smoking relapse. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the factors associated with smoking relapse by period. The Cox proportional hazard regression model was used for the factors associated with smoking relapse for the entire period. The smoking relapse rate at the time of the survey was 25.4%. In the analysis of smoking relapse by period, relapse was associated with the belief that smoking relieves stress, the number of single-person households, and poor subjective health status. In the analysis of smoking relapse during the entire period, we observed a significant association with the belief that smoking relieves stress (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.65, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.52-4.61), single-person households (HR: 1.95, 95% CI: 1.16-3.26), and high levels of emotional stress (HR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.04-2.85). Long-term follow-up is necessary to prevent smoking relapse in single-person households, individuals who believe that smoking relieves stress, and those experiencing high levels of subjective emotional stress. Interventional therapies for stress relief and awareness improvement in smokers need to be developed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endoscopic channels are difficult to clean and can cause infection transmission. We examined the effectiveness of a newly developed channel-cleaning ball brush (BB), which is sucked into the endoscopic channel and scrapes and cleans the lumen as it passes through. METHODS: The upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopes used for patient examinations were randomly selected as the conventional brush (CB) or BB group. After manual cleaning, the presence or absence of carbohydrates, proteins, adenosine triphosphate, and hemoglobin was assessed. RESULTS: Fifty-six and 58 endoscopes were cleaned with the CB and BB, respectively. Carbohydrate and protein were detected in one (1.8%) and two endoscopes (3.4%) in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=1.000). Hemoglobin was observed in one (1.8%) and three endoscopes (5.2%) in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=0.636). The adenosine triphosphate levels were 10.6±15.9 and 12.5±14.3 relative light units in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=0.496). Twenty-seven (48.2%) and 19 (32.8%) endoscopes were positive for microbial cultures in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=0.136). CONCLUSION: The efficacy of BB was not significantly different from that of CB in the endoscopic channel-cleaning process.

RESUMO

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and entecavir (ETV) are the preferred anti-viral agents used as first-line treatments for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, the efficacy of these agents in reducing the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. We conducted this meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of anti-viral agent on preventing HCC in CHB. Two investigators independently searched all relevant studies that examined the efficacy of anti-viral agent for preventing HCC using MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases through August 2021. The extracted data were analysed using a random-effects meta-analysis model based on the inverse-variance method (DerSimonian-Laird) and expressed as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). We included 19 retrospective studies in the analysis. Although there was substantial heterogeneity between the studies, the overall pooled HR indicated that TDF significantly lowered the risk of HCC (HR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.58-0.90, I2 = 66.29%). However, the pooled analysis of propensity score (PS)-matched subpopulations showed no significant differences (HR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.65-1.06; I2 = 52.30%) between TDF and ETV. In a subgroup analysis, an interval of over three years in the start point of patient enrolment and excluding alcoholic liver disease patients significantly lowered the HCC risk associated with TDF. In conclusion, TDF may be more effective than ETV at reducing HCC incidence in treatment-naive CHB patients, but this effect was not consistent in the PS-matched subpopulation that reduced heterogeneity. As a result of subgroup analysis, the conflicting findings of previous studies may result from heterogeneous inclusion criteria. Further studies with standardised protocols are needed to reduce the residual heterogeneity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: South Korea operates two different national insurance systems: health care insurance covers medical services and long-term care (LTC) insurance covers residential care and home care services. Total care expenditures include benefits from both these insurance schemes and personal payments made for receiving these services. This study aims to identify total care expenditures per older person along with related factors and their effects on care expenditures. METHODS: We analyzed claims data of 2017 for LTC and health care insurance in Korea using multiple regression analysis. Participants were recipients of LTC insurance, aged 60 years or above (n = 650,059). The variables of interest included socioeconomic characteristics, disabilities, chronic diseases, and care needs levels. RESULTS: The total expenditures were approximately USD 9,808,922,016 for 650,059 older people (USD 15,089.28 ± 8,006.57 per person) in 2017. The benefits of national health insurance accounted for 86.03% of the total, while personal payments accounted for 13.97%. Comparing the expenditure across services, the total amount was found to be much higher for LTC services. The personal payments were similar for the two insurance schemes, and the proportion of expenses by service type (to total expenses) was greater for LTC (LTC versus health care expenditures: 63.25% versus 36.15% of the total expenditures). The total care expenditures differed significantly according to recipient characteristics. Older adults who were women, between 75-84 years old, with higher care needs levels, and who suffered from diseases and lived in the residential facilities were associated with an increase in total expenditures. Moreover, factors such as any type of disability and living alone were related to a decrease in total care expenditures. CONCLUSIONS: The increase in care expenditures should be monitored from an integrated perspective on overall health care and LTC, and to reduce care needs. In addition, we should focus on the factors involved in using (receiving) services for older individuals and complementing the lack of or inadequate services to enhance and sustain the LTC and health care service systems. Older adults receiving full basic livelihood security and living alone should receive greater attention from the perspective of social equity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The long-term care workforce is an essential factor in the provision of qualified long-term care services. Identifying workforce issues can help developing countries in East Asia and the Pacific prepare for the increase in the older population. Their experiences can be used as lessons for other countries. This study aimed to identify the workforce issues that should be addressed in order to provide high-quality long-term care services for older adults. METHODS: In-depth interviews and content analysis were conducted with a purposive sample of long-term care experts. There were eight participants from Australia and 14 from South Korea. The participants were questioned on important workforce issues to improve the quality of long-term care services. These were open-ended questions that comprised ideas derived from the literature. Major themes were systematically and comprehensively classified and coded to examine recurring comments and themes. RESULTS: The issues in the two countries were very similar: labor shortages, inadequate working conditions, insufficient career and staff training, and the need of counselors or consultants for finding proper services. There were also differences in terms of competency of the service operators and their corresponding multicultural competency. CONCLUSIONS: Providing high-quality long-term care service requires multipronged approaches to workforce capacity and work environment. An adequate and competent workforce should be established to match the service needs of the older population. To improve quality, better working conditions and improved motivation to work in care for older people should be considered. Concurrently, each country would need a workforce strategy tailored to different conditions and environments. This should include policies to induce an influx into the workforce.

RESUMO

This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic implications of intratumoral and peritumoral infiltrating T-lymphocytes in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) through a meta-analysis. A total of 18 eligible studies and 2453 PDAC patients were included in the present study. Intratumoral and peritumoral infiltrating lymphocytes were evaluated using various markers, such as CD3, CD4, CD8, FOXP3, and immune cell score. The correlations between these parameters and overall and disease-free survival were investigated and used in the meta-analysis. High intratumoral infiltration of CD3-, CD4-, and CD8-expressing lymphocytes was significantly correlated with better overall survival (hazard ratio (HR) 0.747, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.620-0.900, HR 0.755, 95% CI 0.632-0.902, and HR 0.754, 95% CI 0.611-0.930, respectively). However, there was no significant correlation between PDAC prognosis and intratumoral FOXP3 or immune cell score (HR 1.358, 95% CI 1.115-1.655 and HR 0.776, 95% CI 0.566-1.065, respectively). Moreover, there was no significant correlation between the prognosis and peritumoral infiltrating T-lymphocytes. In evaluations of disease-free survival, only high intratumoral CD4 infiltration was correlated with a better prognosis (HR 0.525, 95% CI 0.341-0.810). Our results showed that high intratumoral infiltrating lymphocytes were significantly correlated with a better PDAC prognosis. However, among the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, CD3, CD4, and CD8 had prognostic implications, but not FOXP3 and immune cell score.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maintenance of proper weight can help protect against chronic diseases. This study investigated the weight control practices of Korean adults and associated factors. METHODS: Secondary data from a nationwide cross-sectional survey of the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016 to 2018 were analyzed. Subjects were aged 21 to 80 years (n=14,661). The influences of socio-demographic characteristics, health status, health behaviors, and perception of body image on weight control efforts were identified. RESULTS: Women (odds ratio [OR], 1.191; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.723-2.210), city dwellers (OR, 1.229; 95% CI, 1.097-1.377), those who had a middle school or higher level of education (OR, from 1.281 to 1.525), individuals who perceived themselves to be healthy or in fairly health (OR, from 1.103 to 1.257), those with high blood pressure (OR, 1.244; 95% CI, 1.104-1.401), normal or obese body mass index (BMI; OR from 2.579 to 4.430), non-smokers (OR, 1.373; 95% CI, 1.192-1.582), and those who drank alcohol (OR, 1.174; 95% CI, 1.057-1.305) made more weight loss efforts than other individuals. Regardless of actual BMI, if someone perceived themselves to be obese or normal weight (OR, from 4.324 to 10.884), they made more effort to reduce their weight than those individuals who perceived themselves to be underweight. CONCLUSION: Weight control is a positive behavior for people with high BMI. However, those individuals with a normal weight who believe they are obese may require further education. It is also necessary to monitor and address the lack of weight control efforts in rural residents and that there is a need for weight control counseling and support for people with high blood pressure and diabetes. Various related causes should be considered and community-wide efforts be made to support people who need weight control.

RESUMO

Daycare services serve to prolong aging at home. This decreases both families' care burden and the government's financial burden. We identified key factors in the person-centered approach of South Korean daycare center workers to develop and validate a Korean person-centered care questionnaire. Twenty-one items were developed, and 10 expert interviews were conducted. The items were applied to 271 daycare center staff (19.2% male vs. 80.0% female, mean age = 50.68 ± 11.37 years) to evaluate their reliability and validity. Twenty items concerning intimate relationships and the environment, consumers' self-determination, and home-likeness domains were derived, explaining 40.28%, 10.44%, and 6.97% of the total variance, respectively. The overall tool's Cronbach's alpha was 0.905, demonstrating internal consistency. Inter-rater agreement ranged from 0.221 (fair) to 0.765 (good). This tool will be useful for individual staff members as well as for the National Health Insurance Service's evaluations of service quality at daycare centers.

RESUMO

We synthesized phenylboronic acid pinacol ester (PBPE)-conjugated hyaluronic acid (HA) via thiobis(ethylamine) (TbEA) linkage (abbreviated as HAsPBPE conjugates) to fabricate the radiosensitive delivery of caffeic acid phenetyl ester (CAPE) and for application in radioprotection. PBPE was primarily conjugated with TbEA and then PBPE-TbEA conjugates were conjugated again with hyaluronic acid using carbodiimide chemistry. CAPE-incorporated nanoparticles of HAsPBPE were fabricated by the nanoprecipitation method and then the organic solvent was removed by dialysis. CAPE-incorporated HAsPBPE nanoparticles have a small particle size of about 80 or 100 nm and they have a spherical shape. When CAPE-incorporated HAsPBPE nanoparticles were irradiated, nanoparticles became swelled or disintegrated and their morphologies were changed. Furthermore, the CAPE release rate from HAsPBPE nanoparticles were increased according to the radiation dose, indicating that CAPE-incorporated HAsPBPE nanoparticles have radio-sensitivity. CAPE and CAPE-incorporated HAsPBPE nanoparticles appropriately prevented radiation-induced cell death and suppressed intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). CAPE and CAPE-incorporated HAsPBPE nanoparticles efficiently improved survivability of mice from radiation-induced death and reduced apoptotic cell death. We suggest that HAsPBPE nanoparticles are promising candidates for the radio-sensitive delivery of CAPE.

RESUMO

This study identified changes in blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels in frail elderly adults who received home health care nursing over 8 years in Korea. Secondary data extracted from nursing records (2010-2018) of a public health center were analyzed using a mixed model of repeated measure. Study participants were elderly people (n = 499) with a mean age of 81.9 ± 5.56 years. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased by 8.97 and 15.78 mmHg, and by 2.92 and 5.01 mmHg, respectively, at 4-year and 8-year monitoring. This demonstrates that home health care nursing is effective and has both short- and long-term benefits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There are currently several prediction models for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) receiving oral antiviral therapy. However, most models are based on pre-treatment clinical parameters. The current study aimed to develop a novel and practical prediction model for HCC by using both pre- and post-treatment parameters in this population. METHODS: We included two treatment-naïve CHB cohorts who were initiated on oral antiviral therapies: the derivation cohort (n = 1480, Korea prospective SAINT cohort) and the validation cohort (n = 426, the US retrospective Stanford Bay cohort). We employed logistic regression, decision tree, lasso regression, support vector machine and random forest algorithms to develop the HCC prediction model and selected the most optimal method. RESULTS: We evaluated both pre-treatment and the 12-month clinical parameters on-treatment and found the 12-month on-treatment values to have superior HCC prediction performance. The lasso logistic regression algorithm using the presence of cirrhosis at baseline and alpha-foetoprotein and platelet at 12 months showed the best performance (AUROC = 0.843 in the derivation cohort. The model performed well in the external validation cohort (AUROC = 0.844) and better than other existing prediction models including the APA, PAGE-B and GAG models (AUROC = 0.769 to 0.818). CONCLUSIONS: We provided a simple-to-use HCC prediction model based on presence of cirrhosis at baseline and two objective laboratory markers (AFP and platelets) measured 12 months after antiviral initiation. The model is highly accurate with excellent validation in an external cohort from a different country (AUROC 0.844) (Clinical trial number: KCT0003487).

RESUMO

METHODS: This study included 34 eligible studies and 1757 GCLSs. The clinicopathologic characteristics of GCLS were investigated from eligible studies, and the meta-analysis was performed. In addition, we compared the survival rates between GCLS and non-GCLS. RESULTS: The estimated rate of GCLS was 0.062 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.040-0.097). GCLS was significantly correlated with the diffuse type of Lauren's classification, proximal tumor location, less-frequent lymphatic invasion, and lower pTNM stage. However, there was no significant difference in age, sex, tumor differentiation, vascular invasion, perineural invasion, pT stage, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis between GCLS and non-GCLS patients. EBV positive rates in GCLS and non-GCLS patients were 0.723 (95% CI 0.643-0.791) and 0.064 (95% CI 0.039-0.103), respectively. HER2 expression in GCLS was significantly lower than that in non-GCLS. GCLS patients had a more favorable prognosis than that of non-GCLS patients (hazard ratio 0.500, 95% CI 0.305-0.821). CONCLUSION: GCLS comprised 6.2% of overall GC and more frequent in the proximal portion of the stomach. Since GCLS was associated with better prognosis, the histologic finding can be useful for predicting the patient's prognosis.
