RESUMO

GaAs thin-film solar cells have high efficiency, reliability, and operational stability, making them a promising solution for self-powered skin-conformal biosensors. However, inherent device thickness limits suitability for such applications, making them uncomfortable and unreliable in flexural environments. Therefore, reducing the flexural rigidity becomes crucial for integration with skin-compatible electronic devices. Herein, this study demonstrated a novel one-step surface modification bonding methodology, allowing a streamlined transfer process of ultra-thin (2.3 µm thick) GaAs solar cells on flexible polymer substrates. This reproducible technique enables strong bonding between dissimilar materials (GaAs-polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) without high external pressures and temperatures. The fabricated solar cell showed exceptional performance with an open-circuit voltage of 1.018 V, short-circuit current density of 20.641 mA cm-2, fill factor of 79.83%, and power conversion efficiency of 16.77%. To prove the concept, the solar cell is integrated with a skin-compatible organic electrochemical transistor (OECT). Competitive electrical outputs of GaAs solar cells enabled high current levels of OECT under subtle light intensities lower than 50 mW cm-2, which demonstrates a self-powered electrocardiogram sensor with low noise (signal-to-noise ratio of 32.68 dB). Overall, this study presents a promising solution for the development of free-form and comfortable device structures that can continuously power wearable devices and biosensors.

INTRODUCTION: Angiotensin receptor blockers are widely used antihypertensive drugs in South Korea. In 2021, the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety acknowledged the need for national compensation for a drug-induced liver injury (DILI) after azilsartan use. However, little is known regarding the association between angiotensin receptor blockers and DILI. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in incident users of angiotensin receptor blockers from a common data model database (1 January, 2017-31 December, 2021) to compare the risk of DILI among specific angiotensin receptor blockers against valsartan. METHODS: Patients were assigned to treatment groups at cohort entry based on prescribed angiotensin receptor blockers. Drug-induced liver injury was operationally defined using the International DILI Expert Working Group criteria. Cox regression analyses were conducted to derive hazard ratios and the inverse probability of treatment weighting method was applied. All analyses were performed using R. RESULTS: In total, 229,881 angiotensin receptor blocker users from 20 university hospitals were included. Crude DILI incidence ranged from 15.6 to 82.8 per 1000 person-years in treatment groups, most were cholestatic and of mild severity. Overall, the risk of DILI was significantly lower in olmesartan users than in valsartan users (hazard ratio: 0.73 [95% confidence interval 0.55-0.96]). In monotherapy patients, the risk was significantly higher in azilsartan users than in valsartan users (hazard ratio: 6.55 [95% confidence interval 5.28-8.12]). CONCLUSIONS: We found a significantly higher risk of suspected DILI in patients receiving azilsartan monotherapy compared with valsartan monotherapy. Our findings emphasize the utility of real-world evidence in advancing our understanding of adverse drug reactions in clinical practice.

Achieving the simultaneity of ventilation and soundproofing is a significant challenge in applied acoustics. Ventilated soundproofing relies on the interplay between local resonance and nonlocal coupling of acoustic waves within a sub-wavelength structure. However, previously studied structures possess limited types of fundamental resonators and lack modifications from the basic arrangement. These constraints often force the specified position of each attenuation peak and low absorption performance. Here, we suggest the in-duct-type sound barrier with dual Helmholtz resonators, which are positioned around the symmetry-breaking waveguides. The numerical simulations for curated dimensions and scattered fields show the aperiodic migrations and effective amplifications of the two absorptive domains. Collaborating with the subsequent reflective domains, the designed structure holds two effective attenuation bands under the first Fabry-Pérot resonance frequency. This study would serve as a valuable example for understanding the local and non-local behaviors of sub-wavelength resonating structures. Additionally, it could be applied in selective noise absorption and reflection more flexibly.

Particle swarm optimization is implemented for the complete inverse design of multilayered optical filters. To achieve this, a model is designed to optimize the thickness and material of each layer, as well as the total number of layers, simultaneously. The performance of the model is evaluated by repeating the optimization process, enabling clarification of the effects of model parameters on the final output. The designed model is also demonstrated for the optimization of various optical filters, including bandstop filters, bandpass filters, and anti-reflection coatings. The results confirm that particle swarm optimization is capable of designing arbitrary optical filters that cannot be designed using conventional design theories.

This paper proposes fault diagnosis methods aimed at proactively preventing potential safety issues in robot systems, particularly human coexistence robots (HCRs) used in industrial environments. The data were collected from durability tests of the driving module for HCRs, gathering time-series vibration data until the module failed. In this study, to apply classification methods in the absence of post-failure data, the initial 50% of the collected data were designated as the normal section, and the data from the 10 h immediately preceding the failure were selected as the fault section. To generate additional data for the limited fault dataset, the Wasserstein generative adversarial networks with gradient penalty (WGAN-GP) model was utilized and residual connections were added to the generator to maintain the basic structure while preventing the loss of key features of the data. Considering that the performance of image encoding techniques varies depending on the dataset type, this study applied and compared five image encoding methods and four CNN models to facilitate the selection of the most suitable algorithm. The time-series data were converted into image data using image encoding techniques including recurrence plot, Gramian angular field, Markov transition field, spectrogram, and scalogram. These images were then applied to CNN models, including VGGNet, GoogleNet, ResNet, and DenseNet, to calculate the accuracy of fault diagnosis and compare the performance of each model. The experimental results demonstrated significant improvements in diagnostic accuracy when employing the WGAN-GP model to generate fault data, and among the image encoding techniques and convolutional neural network models, spectrogram and DenseNet exhibited superior performance, respectively.

Despite the growing interest in dynamic behaviors at the frequency domain, there exist very few studies on molecular orientation-dependent transient responses of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors. In this research, we investigated the effect of ion injection directionality on transient electrochemical transistor behaviors by developing a model mixed conductor system. Two polymers with similar electrical, ionic, and electrochemical characteristics but distinct backbone planarities and molecular orientations were successfully synthesized by varying the co-monomer unit (2,2'-bithiophene or phenylene) in conjunction with a novel 1,4-dithienylphenylene-based monomer. The comprehensive electrochemical analysis suggests that the molecular orientation affects the length of the ion-drift pathway, which is directly correlated with ion mobility, resulting in peculiar OECT transient responses. These results provide the general insight into molecular orientation-dependent ion movement characteristics as well as high-performance device design principles with fine-tuned transient responses.

OBJECTIVE: Providing inpatient nursing care inevitably involves night shift work. However, night shift work nurses often face psychiatric health problems such as burnout. If night shift work is an essential work type for nurses, it is necessary to select personnel suitable for night shift work or establish improvement measures such as psychiatric intervention through psychiatric evaluation. The objective of this study was to identify factors that could be interventional among factors affecting burnout in shift-working nurses. METHODS: A total of 231 night shift female nurses participated in this study. A questionnaire survey was given to assess their general characteristics. To assess burnout, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey Korean version was adopted. In addition, several mental health scales were used to identify individual psychological characteristics. To identify variables associated with the presence of burnout, odds ratios were calculated using a logistic regression model taking three dimensions of burnout as a dependent variable after adjusting for psychological and occupational factors. RESULTS: High resilience was a significant preventive factor in the three dimensions of burnout. Regarding occupational factor, the longer the duration of employment, the higher depersonalization, but the professional efficacy was good. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that resilience and social support could be prevention factors for burnout. This study is meaningful in examining items that require active intervention and support for burnout targeting night shift nurses who are indispensable for patient care.

Despite numerous studies on cancer treatment, cancer remains a challenging disease to cure, even after decades of research. In recent years, the cancer vaccine has emerged as a promising approach for cancer treatment, offering few unexpected side effects compared to existing therapies. However, the cancer vaccine faces obstacles to commercialization due to its low efficacy. Particularly, the Toll-like receptor (TLR) adjuvant system, specifically the TLR 7/8 agonist, has shown potential for activating Th1 immunity, which stimulates both innate and adaptive immune responses through T cells. In this study, we developed ProLNG-S, a cholesterol-conjugated form of resiquimod (R848), to enhance immune efficacy by stimulating the immune system and reducing toxicity. ProLNG-S was formulated as ProLNG-001, a positively charged liposome, and co-administered with ovalbumin (OVA) protein in the B16-OVA model. ProLNG-001 effectively targeted secondary lymphoid organs, resulting in a robust systemic anti-tumor immune response and tumor-specific T cell activation. Consequently, ProLNG-001 demonstrated potential for preventing tumor progression and improving survival compared to AS01 by enhancing anti-tumor immunity.

Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between job stress and impaired fasting glycemia (IFG) of male workers in a manufacturing industry. Methods: Data were collected from 5,886 male workers in a manufacturing industry who participated in the medical examination from June 19 to August 14, 2020 through self-reported questionnaires. The general characteristics of the subjects, shift work, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and job stress were included. Job stress was measured using the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) consisting of 8 items and 43 questions. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the IFG association with job stress. Results: Among the various factors that can cause job stress, only high job demand was associated with a risk of IFG (odds ratio, 1.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-1.82) especially in non-shift worker. For all other factors, no statistically significant results were obtained. Conclusions: In this study of male workers engaged in the Korean steel manufacturing industry, the 'job demand' item among job stress of non-shift worker was related to IFG.

Fabrication of high quantum efficiency nanoscale device is challenging due to increased carrier loss at surface. Low dimensional materials such 0D quantum dots and 2D materials have been widely studied to mitigate the loss. Here, we demonstrate a strong photoluminescence enhancement from graphene/III-V quantum dot mixed-dimensional heterostructures. The distance between graphene and quantum dots in the 2D/0D hybrid structure determines the degree of radiative carrier recombination enhancement from 80% to 800% compared to the quantum dot only structure. Time-resolved photoluminescence decay also shows increased carrier lifetimes when the distance decreases from 50 to 10 nm. We propose that the optical enhancement is due to energy band bending and hole carrier transfer, which repair the imbalance of electron and hole carrier densities in quantum dots. This 2D graphene/0D quantum dot heterostructure shows promise for high performance nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of music therapy as an alternative treatment on depression in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by activating serotonin (5-HT) and improving stress coping ability. METHODS: This study is designed based on randomization method. A total of 36 subjects participated in the experiment, consisting of an ADHD control group (n = 18) and ADHD music therapy group (n = 18). The ADHD control group received standard care, while the ADHD music therapy group received music therapy and standard care. The ADHD music therapy group received both active music therapy (improvisation) and receptive music therapy (music listening) for 50 minutes, twice a week, for 3 months: a total of 24 times. From a neurophysiological perspective, changes in depression and stress were tracked by measuring 5-HT secretion, cortisol expression, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and CDI and DHQ psychological scales. RESULTS: The ADHD music therapy group's 5-HT secretion increased (p < 0.001), whereas cortisol expression (p < 0.001), BP (p < 0.001) and HR (p < 0.001) decreased. The CDI and DHQ psychological scales also showed positive changes (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, the ADHD Con G's (who did not receive music therapy) 5-HT secretion did not increase, whereas cortisol expression, BP, and HR did not decrease. In addition, the CDI and DHQ psychological scales did not display positive changes. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the application of music therapy as an alternative treatment for ADHD children and adolescents showed positive neurophysiological and psychological effects. Therefore, this study would like to propose a new alternative to medicine for preventing and treating depression through various uses of music therapy.

Legged robots have become popular in recent years due to their ability to locomote on rough terrains; these robots are able to walk on narrow stepping-stones, go upstairs, and explore soft ground such as sand. Ground reaction force (GRF) is the force exerted on the body by the ground when they are in contact. This is a key element and is widely used for programming the locomotion of the legged robots. Being capable of estimating the GRF is advantageous over measuring it with the actual sensor system. Estimating allows one to simplify the system, and it is meant to be capable of prediction, and so on. In this article, we present a neural network approach for GRF estimation for the legged robot system. In order to fundamentally study the GRF estimation of the robot leg, we demonstrate our approach for a single-legged robot with a degree of freedom (DoF) of two with hip and knee joints on a flat-surface. The first joint is directly driven from the actuator, and another joint is belt-pulley driven from the second actuator to take advantage of the long range of motion. The neural network is designed to estimate GRF without attaching force sensors such as load cells, and the encoder is the only sensor used for the estimation. We propose a two-staged multi-layer perceptron (MLP) solution based on supervised learning to estimate GRF in the physical-world. The first stage of the MLP model is trained using datasets from the simulation, enabling it to estimate the simulation-staged GRF. The second stage of the MLP model is trained in the physical world using the simulation-staged GRF obtained from the first stage MLP as the input. This approach enables the second stage MLP to bridge the simulation to the physical world. The root mean squared error (RMSE) is 0.9949 N on the validation datasets in the best case. The performance of the trained network is evaluated when the robot follows trajectories that are not used in training the two-stage GRF estimation network.

Background: Haenyeo is a woman who has the job of collecting seafood in the Jeju Sea at an average temperature of 13°C-14°C. The purpose of this study was to examine the cold acclimatization and occupational characteristics of Haenyeo through biomarkers such as orexin and irisin related to heat generation in the body. Methods: Twenty-one Haenyeo and 25 people with similar age, body type, and body mass index were selected as the control group (Control G). In the cold exposure experiment, a climate chamber was set to 5°C and both feet were immersed in a 15°C water tank for 30 minutes. Tympanic temperature (Tty) and skin temperature (Tsk) were measured, and the mean body temperature (mTb) was calculated. Blood samples were collected before and immediately after the examination. Orexin and irisin levels were analyzed. Results: Orexin levels were elevated after cold stimulation from 12.17 ± 4.44 to 12.95 ± 4.53 ng/mL (Haenyeo group [Haenyeo G], p < 0.01) and 10.37 ± 3.84 to 11.25 ± 4.02 ng/mL (Control G, p < 0.001). Irisin levels were elevated after cold stimulation from 4.83 ± 2.28 to 5.36 ± 2.23 ng/mL (Haenyeo G, p < 0.001) and 3.73 ± 1.59 to 4.18 ± 2.04 ng/mL (Control G, p < 0.001). The difference between Haenyeo G and Control G values in orexin and irisin appears not only in pre-exposure but also in post-exposure (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our experimental results suggest that Haenyeo G were relatively superior in cold tolerance to Control G under cold exposure conditions. Haenyeo's cold acclimatization is due to the basic differences in pyrogens regarding body temperature control such as orexin and irisin. This means that Haenyeo are advantageous for cold survival.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between lead exposure and serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γGT) levels as an oxidative stress marker in male steelworkers. Methods: Data were collected during the annual health examination of workers in 2020. A total of 1,654 steelworkers were selected, and the variables for adjustment included the workers' general characteristics, lifestyle, and occupational characteristics. The association between the blood lead level (BLL) and serum γGT level was investigated by multiple linear and logistic regression analyses. The BLL and serum γGT values that were transformed into natural logarithms were used in multiple linear regression analysis, and the tertile of BLL was used in logistic regression analysis. Results: The geometric mean of the participants' BLLs and serum γGT level was 1.36 µg/dL and 27.72 IU/L, respectively. Their BLLs differed depending on age, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, drinking status, shift work, and working period, while their serum γGT levels differed depending on age, BMI, smoking status, drinking status, physical activity, and working period. In multiple linear regression analysis, the difference in models 1, 2, and 3 was significant, obtaining 0.326, 0.176, and 0.172 (all: p < 0.001), respectively. In the multiple linear regression analysis stratified according to drinking status, BMI, and age, BLLs were positively associated with serum γGT levels. Regarding the logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio of the third BLL tertile in models 1, 2, and 3 (for having an elevated serum γGT level within the first tertile reference) was 2.74, 1.83, and 1.81, respectively. Conclusions: BLL was positively associated with serum γGT levels in male steelworkers even at low lead concentrations (< 5 µg/dL).

Tunable electrical phase transitions based on the structural and quantum-state phase transitions in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides have attracted attention in both semiconducting electronics and quantum electronics applications. Here, we report gate-voltage-induced reversible electrical phase transitions in Mo0.67W0.33Se2 (MoWSe) field-effect transistors prepared on SiO2/Si substrates. In gate-induced depletion regions of the 2H phase, an electrical current resumes flow at 150 K < T < 200 K with decreasing T irrespective of the layer number (n) for MoWSe when n < 20. The newly appearing electron-doped-type conducting channel again enters the 2H-phase region when the back-gate voltage increases, accompanied by the negative differential transconductance for four-layer and monolayer devices or by a deflection point in the transfer curves for a multilayer device. The thermal activation energies of the new conducting and 2H-phase branches differ by one order of magnitude at the same gate voltage for both the four-layer and monolayer cases, indicating that the electrical band at the Fermi level was modified. The hysteresis measurements for the gate voltage were performed with a five-layer device, which confirms the reversible electrical transition behavior. The possible origins of the nucleated conducting phase in the depletion region of the 2H phase of MoWSe are discussed.

Irisin is a myokine caused by exercise that improves insulin resistance and weight loss. However, under unfavorable conditions such as air pollution, and during the pandemic, outdoor activities are uncomfortable. Therefore, in this study, the effect of heat therapy (half bath 42 ± 0.5°C for 30 min) on irisin circulation levels as an exercise alternative for middle-aged obese women after menopause was investigated. Subjects were 33 women aged 49.54 ± 6.04 years, with parameters of height, 160.12 ± 4.33 cm, weight, 69.71 ± 7.52 kg, body surface area 1.73 ± 0.13 m2, body mass index, 27.19 ± 3.40 kg/m2. The results suggest that circulating irisin levels showed a significant increase after one-time thermotherapy (TH-1). However, the increase in circulating irisin levels after 15 treatments (TH-15, 5 days/week, 3 weeks) was significantly varied. The level of adiponectin, which increases fatty oxidation to reduce fatty deposition, increased significantly at TH-1, but further increased at TH-15, which was significantly different from the level of TH-1. In addition, the basic serum free fatty acid (FFA) level was significantly increased at TH-15 compared to TH-1. Significant differences were also found in the lipid profile (body mass index, waist circumference, and % body fat). Thermotherapy can significantly increase the tympanic temperature and induce changes in circulating irisin and adiponectin levels. Thus, it resulted in positive changes in FFA and lipid profiles. Therefore, repeated thermotherapy is effective in increasing circulating irisin levels in postmenopausal obese women.

Van der Waals heterostructures with two-dimensional magnets offer a magnetic junction with an atomically sharp and clean interface. This attribute ensures that the magnetic layers maintain their intrinsic spin-polarized electronic states and spin-flipping scattering processes at a minimum level, a trait that can expand spintronic device functionalities. Here, using a van der Waals assembly of ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 with non-magnetic hexagonal boron nitride and WSe2 layers, we demonstrate electrically tunable, highly transparent spin injection and detection across the van der Waals interfaces. By varying an electrical bias, the net spin polarization of the injected carriers can be modulated and reversed in polarity, which leads to sign changes of the tunnelling magnetoresistance. We attribute the spin polarization reversals to sizable contributions from high-energy localized spin states in the metallic ferromagnet, so far inaccessible in conventional magnetic junctions. Such tunability of the spin-valve operations opens a promising route for the electronic control of next-generation low-dimensional spintronic device applications.

Sequence-structure alignment for protein sequences is an important task for the template-based modeling of 3D structures of proteins. Building a reliable sequence-structure alignment is a challenging problem, especially for remote homologue target proteins. We built a method of sequence-structure alignment called CRFalign, which improves upon a base alignment model based on HMM-HMM comparison by employing pairwise conditional random fields in combination with nonlinear scoring functions of structural and sequence features. Nonlinear scoring part is implemented by a set of gradient boosted regression trees. In addition to sequence profile features, various position-dependent structural features are employed including secondary structures and solvent accessibilities. Training is performed on reference alignments at superfamily levels or twilight zone chosen from the SABmark benchmark set. We found that CRFalign method produces relative improvement in terms of average alignment accuracies for validation sets of SABmark benchmark. We also tested CRFalign on 51 sequence-structure pairs involving 15 FM target domains of CASP14, where we could see that CRFalign leads to an improvement in average modeling accuracies in these hard targets (TM-CRFalign ≃42.94%) compared with that of HHalign (TM-HHalign ≃39.05%) and also that of MRFalign (TM-MRFalign ≃36.93%). CRFalign was incorporated to our template search framework called CRFpred and was tested for a random target set of 300 target proteins consisting of Easy, Medium and Hard sets which showed a reasonable template search performance.

Caffeine and orexin can affect awakening, neuroendocrine, and sympathetic nerve function. Our previous study has reported that caffeine intake can increase human body temperature. However, little is known about the combined effects of thermotherapy and caffeine intake on human serum orexin concentrations. Forty-two healthy male subjects with age of 26.72 ± 5.05 years, height of 174.10 ± 7.09 cm, and body weight of 74.68 ± 8.91 kg participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to a control (CON) group (n = 21) and a caffeine (CAFF) group (n = 21). After thermotherapy (half-body immersion in a hot water bath at 42 ± 0.5 °C, circulating orexin level increased more (p < 0.05) in the CAFF group than in the CON group. Positive relationships between mean body temperature and orexin were observed before and after heat stimulation (p < 0.001). Caffeine intake boosted the upregulation of serum orexin concentrations in subjects undergoing thermotherapy.
