PURPOSE: International expert panels proposed new nomenclatures, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in 2020 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in 2023, along with revised diagnostic criteria to replace non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to investigate the differences in NAFLD, MAFLD, and MASLD prevalence with changing nomenclature in a health check-up using magnetic resonance imaging-derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) to assess hepatic steatosis. We also examined the prevalence of the sub-classifications of steatotic liver disease (SLD) and the differences in characteristics among the sub-categories. METHODS: We included 844 participants who underwent liver MRI-PDFF at our health check-up clinic between January 2020 and November 2022. Hepatic steatosis was defined as MRI-PDFF ≥ 5%. Participants were categorized according to NAFLD, MAFLD, MASLD, and sub-classifications of SLD. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of NAFLD, MAFLD, and MASLD were 25.9%, 29.5%, and 25.2%, respectively. 30.5% of the participants was categorized as SLD. The prevalence rates of the SLD sub-categories were 25.2% for MASLD, 3.7% for MASLD and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD), 0.1% for alcohol-associated liver disease, 1.3% for specific etiology SLD, and 0.1% for cryptogenic SLD. Compared with patients in the MASLD group, those in the MetALD group were younger, predominantly male, and exhibited higher levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and triglycerides. CONCLUSION: The prevalences of NAFLD and MASLD assessed using MRI-PDFF were similar, with MASLD accounting for 97.3% of the patients with NAFLD. The separate MetALD sub-category may have clinical characteristics that differ from those of MASLD.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of perfusion-only SPECT/CT (Q SPECT/CT) in comparison with that of ventilation/perfusion planar scintigraphy (V/Q planar), perfusion SPECT with ventilation scan (V/Q SPECT), and perfusion SPECT/CT with ventilation scan (V/Q SPECT/CT) in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with pulmonary hypertension who underwent ventilation-perfusion planar and SPECT/CT were retrospectively recruited. Two nuclear medicine physicians interpreted V/Q planar, V/Q SPECT, V/Q SPECT/CT, and Q SPECT/CT according to the European Association of Nuclear Medicine criteria. The diagnostic accuracy of these modalities for CTEPH was compared using a composite reference standard of pulmonary angiography, imaging test, cardiorespiratory assessment, and follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 192 patients were enrolled, including 85 with CTEPH. The sensitivity of Q SPECT/CT was 98.8%, which similar to that of V/Q planar (97.6%), V/Q SPECT (96.5%), or V/Q SPECT/CT (100.0%). In contrast, Q SPECT/CT exhibited significantly lower specificity (73.8%) compared with V/Q planar (86.9%, P = 0.001), V/Q SPECT (87.9%, P < 0.001), and V/Q SPECT/CT (88.8%, P < 0.001). The significantly lower specificity of Q SPECT/CT, compared with the 3 others, was observed in the subgroup aged ≥50 years ( P < 0.001 for all), but not in those <50 years. CONCLUSIONS: Q SPECT/CT exhibited lower specificity compared with V/Q planar, V/Q SPECT, and V/Q SPECT/CT in diagnosing CTEPH. It might underscore the essential role of a ventilation scan in patients with PH, even with the introduction of SPECT/CT.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle modification in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is key to improving health outcomes. Mobile health technologies may offer potential effective and efficient health care support to facilitate self-management. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a lifestyle coaching intervention using a mobile app for patients with NAFLD and evaluate physiological and psychological health outcomes for 6 months. METHODS: This study was a randomized controlled trial. The personalized lifestyle coaching intervention using a mobile app was developed through established guidelines and literature reviews. This intervention consisted of information on NAFLD management, diet and physical activity self-monitoring, and coaching sessions based on patient records and SMS text messages. A total of 102 individuals were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to the intervention group (n=48) or the control group (n=54). The outcomes were improvements in physiological (weight, liver fat score, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transferase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase) and clinical outcomes (self-management, NAFLD self-management knowledge, self-efficacy, fatigue, depression, and quality of life). Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and a linear mixed model to test the effects of the intervention. RESULTS: All participants completed the study. The mean age of the participants was 48.9 (SD 13.74) years, 38.2% (39/102) were female participants, and 65.7% (67/102) were married. There were no differences in baseline demographic and clinical data between the intervention and control groups. Changes from baseline to 6 months were significant only within the intervention group for weight (P<.001), liver fat score (P=.01), aspartate aminotransferase (P=.03), alanine transferase (P=.002), gamma-glutamyl transferase (P=.04), self-management (P<.001), fatigue (P=.005), depression (P=.003), and quality of life (P<.001). The differences between the 2 groups for the changes over the 6 months were significant in self-management (P=.004), self-management knowledge (P=.04), fatigue (P=.004), depression (P=.04), and quality of life (P=.01). However, the intervention-by-time interaction was significantly effective only for self-management (P=.006) and fatigue (P=.02). CONCLUSIONS: Nonpharmacological interventions using a mobile app may be effective in improving the physiological and psychological health outcomes of patients with NAFLD. The aim of our study was to assess the performance of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) for similar chest computed tomography (CT) in obstructive lung disease. This retrospective study included patients with obstructive lung disease who underwent volumetric chest CT scans. The CBIR database included 600 chest CT scans from 541 patients. To assess the system performance, follow-up chest CT scans of 50 patients were evaluated as query cases, which showed the stability of the CT findings between baseline and follow-up chest CT, as confirmed by thoracic radiologists. The CBIR system retrieved the top five similar CT scans for each query case from the database by quantifying and comparing emphysema extent and size, airway wall thickness, and peripheral pulmonary vasculatures in descending order from the database. The rates of retrieval of the same pairs of query CT scans in the top 1-5 retrievals were assessed. Two expert chest radiologists evaluated the visual similarities between the query and retrieved CT scans using a five-point scale grading system. The rates of retrieving the same pairs of query CTs were 60.0% (30/50) and 68.0% (34/50) for top-three and top-five retrievals. Radiologists rated 64.8% (95% confidence interval 58.8-70.4) of the retrieved CT scans with a visual similarity score of four or five and at least one case scored five points in 74% (74/100) of all query cases. The proposed CBIR system for obstructive lung disease integrating quantitative CT measures demonstrated potential for retrieving chest CT scans with similar imaging phenotypes. Further refinement and validation in this field would be valuable.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Lack of awareness disturbs proper care for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in patients undergoing surgery. We investigated the status of HCV screening, confirmation, and treatment in patients who underwent surgery. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery at a tertiary academic center between 2019 and 2021 were eligible for this retrospective study. RESULTS: Between 2019 and 2021, 96 894 patients (40 121 males; 41.4%) who underwent surgery under general anesthesia were recruited. The median age of the participants was 55.0 years. Of the 83 920 (86.6%) patients who tested positive for anti-HCV antibodies, 576 (0.7%) showed positive results, with a higher proportion of patients with diabetes mellitus (32.6% vs 18.5%), hypertension (50.5% vs 28.6%), liver cirrhosis (13.2% vs 1.7%), and unfavorable laboratory test results when compared with those with negative results (all P < 0.05). HCV RNA was tested in 215 patients (37.3%), with a positivity rate of 20.5% (n = 44). Of the 44 patients, 42 (95.5%) were referred for antiviral treatment, and 29 (69.0%) were successfully treated with direct-acting antiviral therapy. HCV RNA confirmation rates were higher in the Department of Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery (76.6%) than in the other surgical departments (25.0-33.5%) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of patients who were positive for anti-HCV antibodies and failed to receive proper management after surgery was not negligible. Increased awareness of HCV infection among surgeons through appropriate education may be required.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are chronic inflammatory diseases that share pathogenetic mechanisms. In this study, we investigated whether NAFLD influences the clinical outcomes in patients with intestinal BD. METHODS: Patients with intestinal BD and available hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) scores were recruited between 2005 and 2022. An HSI of ≥30 and FIB-4 of ≥1.45 were used to diagnose hepatic steatosis and significant liver fibrosis, respectively. The primary outcomes were intestinal BD-related hospitalization, surgery, emergency room visits, or the first use of corticosteroids, immunomodulators, or biologic agents for intestinal BD. RESULTS: A total of 780 patients with BD were selected. The prevalence of hepatic steatosis and significant liver fibrosis were 72.3% and 8.8%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that younger age, prior smoking history, concomitant skin lesions, higher white blood cell count, and lower serum albumin levels were independently associated with an increased risk of clinical relapse (all P < 0.05), whereas hepatic steatosis and significant liver fibrosis were not (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.164, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.923-1.468; P = 0.199 for hepatic steatosis; HR = 0.982, 95% CI 0.672-1.436; P = 0.927 for significant liver fibrosis). CONCLUSION: Hepatic steatosis and liver fibrotic burden were not independently associated with clinical outcomes in patients with intestinal BD.

Background: COPD coexists with many concurrent comorbidities. Cardiovascular complications are deemed to be major causes of death in COPD. Although inhaler therapy is the main therapeutic intervention in COPD, cardiovascular events accompanying inhaler therapy require further investigation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate new development of cardiovascular events according to each inhaler therapy and comorbidities. Methods: This study analyzed COPD patients (age ≥ 40 years, N = 199,772) from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database in Korea. The development of cardiovascular events, from the index date to December 31, 2020, was investigated. The cohort was eventually divided into three arms: the LAMA/LABA group (N = 28,322), the ICS/LABA group (N = 11,812), and the triple group (LAMA/ICS/LABA therapy, N = 6174). Results: Multivariable Cox analyses demonstrated that, compared to ICS/LABA therapy, triple therapy was independently associated with the development of ischemic heart disease (HR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.04-1.43), heart failure (HR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.14-1.84), arrhythmia (HR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.41-2.09), and atrial fibrillation/flutter (HR: 2.31, 95% CI: 1.64-3.25), whereas the LAMA/LABA therapy did not show a significant association. Furthermore, emergency room visit during covariate assessment window was independently associated with the development of ischemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, and atrial fibrillation/flutter (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our data suggest that cardiovascular risk should be considered in COPD patients receiving triple therapy, despite the confounding bias resulting from disparities in each group.

The treatment decisions for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are determined by a wide range of factors, and there is a significant difference between the recommendations of widely used staging systems and the actual initial treatment choices. Herein, we propose a machine learning-based clinical decision support system suitable for use in multi-center settings. We collected data from nine institutions in South Korea for training and validation datasets. The internal and external datasets included 935 and 1750 patients, respectively. We developed a model with 20 clinical variables consisting of two stages: the first stage which recommends initial treatment using an ensemble voting machine, and the second stage, which predicts post-treatment survival using a random survival forest algorithm. We derived the first and second treatment options from the results with the highest and the second-highest probabilities given by the ensemble model and predicted their post-treatment survival. When only the first treatment option was accepted, the mean accuracy of treatment recommendation in the internal and external datasets was 67.27% and 55.34%, respectively. The accuracy increased to 87.27% and 86.06%, respectively, when the second option was included as the correct answer. Harrell's C index, integrated time-dependent AUC curve, and integrated Brier score of survival prediction in the internal and external datasets were 0.8381 and 0.7767, 91.89 and 86.48, 0.12, and 0.14, respectively. The proposed system can assist physicians by providing data-driven predictions for reference from other larger institutions or other physicians within the same institution when making treatment decisions.

Background/Aims: Increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported. However, the effects of NAFLD on the outcome of IBD remains unclear. We investigated whether the presence of NAFLD could influence the outcomes of patients with IBD. Methods: We recruited 3,356 eligible patients with IBD into our study between November 2005 and November 2020. Hepatic steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed using hepatic steatosis index of ≥30 and fibrosis-4 of ≥1.45, respectively. The primary outcome was clinical relapse, defined based on the following: IBD-related admission, surgery, or first use of corticosteroids, immunomodulators, or biologic agents for IBD. Results: The prevalence of NAFLD in patients with IBD was 16.7%. Patients with hepatic steatosis and advanced fibrosis were older, had a higher body mass index, and were more likely to have diabetes (all p<0.05). Conclusions: Hepatic steatosis was independently associated with increased risks of clinical relapse in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, whereas fibrotic burden in the liver was not. Future studies should investigate whether assessment and therapeutic intervention for NAFLD will improve the clinical outcomes of patients with IBD.

o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) is commonly used as a reliable signaling agent for colorimetric assays via oxidative dimerization to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) (λmax = 425 nm), which is catalyzed by conventional horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or its nanoparticle mimics. Recently, it has been reported that catalytic and electrochemical oxidation of OPD produces a mixture of polymerized OPD molecules (polyOPDs), which could potentially affect the colorimetric signal due to the difference in optical properties between DAP and polyOPDs. In our study, we present for the first time that the gold nanoparticle-catalyzed oxidation of OPD could exhibit nonmonotonic extinction transitions at 425 nm. Using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, we verify that the production of polyOPDs is specifically responsible for the unexpected decrease in extinction at 425 nm. This discovery presents a potential challenge to the conventionally accepted role of OPD as a signaling agent. Furthermore, we find that the modification of reaction variables, including reactant concentrations, anion types, and temperature, determines how nonmonotonic the extinction transition could be. Lastly, we develop an OPD-based colorimetric DNA detection scheme using DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles to demonstrate the potential problems in accurately quantifying the target. Our proposal of using NaNO3 instead of NaCl to provide the desired ionic strength could be a suitable solution to overcome the obstacles of detection.

Antibiotic-induced gut microbiota disruption constitutes a major risk factor for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). Further, antibiotic therapy, which is the standard treatment option for CDI, exacerbates gut microbiota imbalance, thereby causing high recurrent CDI incidence. Consequently, probiotic-based CDI treatment has emerged as a long-term management and preventive option. However, the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of probiotics for CDI remain uninvestigated, thereby creating a knowledge gap that needs to be addressed. To fill this gap, we used a multiomics approach to holistically investigate the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of probiotics for CDI at a molecular level. We first screened Bifidobacterium longum owing to its inhibitory effect on C. difficile growth, then observed the physiological changes associated with the inhibition of C. difficile growth and toxin production via a multiomics approach. Regarding the mechanism underlying C. difficile growth inhibition, we detected a decrease in intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis due to B. longum-produced lactate and a subsequent decrease in (deoxy)ribonucleoside triphosphate synthesis. Via the differential regulation of proteins involved in translation and protein quality control, we identified B. longum-induced proteinaceous stress. Finally, we found that B. longum suppressed the toxin production of C. difficile by replenishing proline consumed by it. Overall, the findings of the present study expand our understanding of the mechanisms by which probiotics inhibit C. difficile growth and contribute to the development of live biotherapeutic products based on molecular mechanisms for treating CDI.

Purpose: To identify the risk factors for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in view of potential etiotypes in a general population and referred COPD patients. Patients and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional observational study utilizing two distinct datasets: a dataset of a general population including 2430 subjects with COPD from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and another dataset of referral clinics including 579 patients with COPD from the Korean Obstructive Lung Disease (KOLD). Results: The mean age of both groups was 67 years, and 71.2% and 93.8% were male in the COPD subjects from the KNHANES and the KOLD, respectively. The mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second of predicted value was 79.1% (KNHANES) and 55.4% (KOLD). The frequency of risk factors of cigarette smoking (C), infection (I), pollution (P), and asthma (A) was 54.6%, 9.4%, 10.7%, and 7.9%, respectively, in the KNHANES COPD subjects, and 88.4%, 26.6%, 41.6%, and 35.2%, respectively, in the KOLD COPD subjects. Risk factors were unidentified in 32.6% (KNHANES) and 3.1% (KOLD) of COPD subjects. Additionally, 14.1% and 66.2% of subjects with COPD had two or more risk factors in the KNHANES and KOLD, respectively. Conclusion: The profiles of risk factors C, I, P, and A were identified and appeared to be different among the two COPD groups from a general population or referral clinics. In some of the COPD subjects, risk factors were not identified, so we should endeavour to find out unidentified COPD risk factors, especially in the general population.

SARS-CoV-2 emerged, and is evolving to efficiently infect humans worldwide. SARS-CoV-2 evades early innate recognition, interferon signaling activated only in bystander cells. This balance of innate activation and viral evasion has important consequences, but the pathways involved are incompletely understood. Here we find that autophagy genes regulate innate immune signaling, impacting the basal set point of interferons, and thus permissivity to infection. Mechanistically, autophagy genes negatively regulate MAVS, and this low basal level of MAVS is efficiently antagonized by SARS-CoV-2 ORF9b, blocking interferon activation in infected cells. However, upon loss of autophagy increased MAVS overcomes ORF9b-mediated antagonism suppressing infection. This has led to the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants to express higher levels of ORF9b, allowing SARS-CoV-2 to replicate under conditions of increased MAVS signaling. Altogether, we find a critical role of autophagy in the regulation of innate immunity and uncover an evolutionary trajectory of SARS-CoV-2 ORF9b to overcome host defenses.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a well-known risk factor for worse outcomes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, evidence-based guidance on effective personal behavioural strategies to minimise the effects of PM2.5 is limited. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a behavioural intervention in reducing PM2.5 exposure and improving clinical outcomes in patients with COPD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were 1:1 randomised, and the intervention group received a behavioural intervention consisting of five activities, while the control group received usual care. The participants were followed up for 9 months. The primary outcomes were differences in the score of St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire for patients with COPD (SGRQ-C) and COPD assessment test (CAT) from baseline. RESULTS: A total of 106 participants were enrolled and 102 completed the study. At the end of the study, the intervention group showed significant improvements in the primary outcomes compared to the control group, with a group difference of -5.9 in the reduction of total SGRQ-C (-3.4 vs. 2.5; p = 0.049) and -3.8 in the CAT score (-1.2 vs. 2.7; p = 0.001). Participants with good adherence to the intervention demonstrated a greater extent of improvement in CAT score and lower PM2.5 levels compared to those who had poor adherence or were in the control group. Regular checking of air quality forecasts was significantly associated with a reduction in CAT scores among all the intervention activities. CONCLUSION: Individual-level behavioural interventions can be an effective strategy for mitigating the health hazards associated with PM2.5. CLINICALTRIALS: gov Identifier: NCT04878367.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the quality of surveillance ultrasound (US) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) utilizing fusion imaging. METHODS: This research involved a secondary analysis of a prospectively recruited cohort. Under institutional review board approval, participants referred for surveillance US who had undergone liver computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within the past year were screened between August 2022 and January 2023. After patient consent was obtained, the US visualization score in the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System was assessed with fusion imaging at the time of examination. This score was compared to that of conventional US using the extended McNemar test. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors independently associated with a US visualization score of B or C. Factors limiting visualization of focal lesions were recorded during fusion imaging. RESULTS: Among the 105 participants (mean age, 59±11 years; 66 men), US visualization scores of B and C were assigned to 57 (54.3%) and 17 (16.2%) participants, respectively, by conventional US and 54 (51.4%) and 32 (30.5%) participants, respectively, by fusion imaging. The score distribution differed significantly between methods (P=0.010). Male sex was independently associated with US visualization scores of B or C (adjusted odds ratio, 3.73 [95% confidence interval, 1.30 to 10.76]; P=0.015). The most common reason (64.5%) for lesion nondetection was a limited sonic window. CONCLUSION: Conventional US may underestimate the limitations of the sonic window relative to real-time fusion imaging with pre-acquired CT or MRI in the surveillance of HCC.

Background: The natural course of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by symptom exacerbation and quality-of-life reduction. Therefore, symptoms should be properly assessed. Some studies have demonstrated a weak correlation between cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) parameters and symptoms in patients with COPD; however, data on Asian patients are lacking. We investigated the value of CPET parameters in assessing symptoms and quality of life in Asian patients with COPD. Methods: Of 681 patients who underwent CPET at Asan Medical Center between January 2020 and June 2022, we analyzed 195 patients with COPD in this retrospective study. A cycle ergometer was used for the incremental protocol. The modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) were administered to assess the patients' symptoms. Results: The mMRC grade was related to maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max, L/min) (Spearman's correlation coefficient ρ=-0.295, P<0.001) and physiological dead space/tidal volume ratio at peak exercise (VD/VT peak) (ρ=0.256, P<0.001). The CAT score was significantly correlated with VO2 max (L/min) (Spearman's correlation coefficient ρ=-0.297, P<0.001) and VD/VT peak (ρ=0.271, P<0.001), but had no correlation with breathing reserve (ρ=-0.122, P=0.089). The optimal cut-off values of VO2 max and VD/VT peak for predicting the onset of clinically significant dyspnea were 1.099 L/min and 0.295, respectively. Conclusions: VO2 max and VD/VT peak comprehensively reflect the symptoms and health-related quality of life of patients with COPD.

Butyrate-producing bacteria play a key role in human health, and recent studies have triggered interest in their development as next-generation probiotics. However, there remains limited knowledge not only on the identification of high-butyrate-producing bacteria in the human gut but also in the metabolic capacities for prebiotic carbohydrates and their interaction with the host. Herein, it was discovered that Roseburia intestinalis produces higher levels of butyrate and digests a wider variety of prebiotic polysaccharide structures compared with other human major butyrate-producing bacteria (Eubacterium rectale, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and Roseburia hominis). Moreover, R. intestinalis extracts upregulated the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins (TJP1, OCLN, and CLDN3) in human intestinal epithelial cells more than other butyrate-producing bacteria. R. intestinalis was cultured with human intestinal epithelial cells in the mimetic intestinal host-microbe interaction coculture system to explore the health-promoting effects using multiomics approaches. Consequently, it was discovered that live R. intestinalis only enhances purine metabolism and the oxidative pathway, increasing adenosine triphosphate levels in human intestinal epithelial cells, but that heat-killed bacteria had no effect. Therefore, this study proposes that R. intestinalis has potentially high value as a next-generation probiotic to promote host intestinal health.

AgCl nanomaterials recently attracted scientific interest as useful structural building blocks for producing metallic nanomaterials owing to their facile synthesis, controllable morphology, and ease of removal under ambient conditions. However, their complex chemical reactivity has primarily been studied in association with water solubility or reducibility. This study investigates the pivotal role of precursor ligands in the photochemical synthesis of metallic cubic mesh nanostructures on the AgCl templates. The side reactions between AgCl and Au precursors with different ligands are thoroughly discussed along with their influence on the byproduct formation and the structural stability of the resulting metallic nanostructures. Importantly, we introduce for the first time the partial destruction of AgCl and the formation of undesirable byproducts caused by the presence of highly oxidizing and Cl-containing AuCl4-. In addition, a synthetic route for producing highly pure and stable metallic nanostructures using a halogen-free Au precursor or Pt-priming is proposed. Further, the photothermal properties of these replicated metallic nanostructures are presented as a new evaluation tool for analyzing their overall structural stability. Discovering the role of precursor ligands in the reaction system will prove useful as a guide for the synthesis of functional noble metal nanomaterials using silver halide templates.

Among various biological agents, bacteriocins are important candidates to control Listeria monocytogenes which is a foodborne pathogen. In this study, a novel bacteriocin, named agilicin C7, was isolated from Ligilactobacillus agilis C7 showing inhibitory activity against L. monocytogenes. Agilicin C7 biosynthesis gene was characterized by bioinformatics analyses and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli for further study. The anti-listeria activity of recombinant agilicin C7 (r-agilicin C7) was lost by proteases and α-amylase, suggesting that agilicin C7 is a glycoprotein. r-Agilicin C7 has wide pH and thermal stability and is also stable in various organic solvents. It destroyed L. monocytogenes by damaging the integrity of the cell envelope. These properties of r-agilicin C7 indicate that agilicin C7 is a novel amylase-sensitive anti-listerial Class IId bacteriocin. Physicochemical stability and inhibitory activity against L. monocytogenes of r-agilicin C7 suggest that it can be applied to control L. monocytogenes in the food industry, including dairy and meat products.
