RESUMO

Many recent games, such as racing and flight games, open their game telemetry data to users by storing them in the local memory. Such telemetry data can provide useful information for haptic rendering, and this advantage has been exploited by the industry. This approach applies to any applications that export telemetry data in run time. The haptic rendering module operates as a separate process that accesses the telemetry data in parallel with the application. It is simple, efficient, and modular while retaining the application intact. We examine the approach's viability for user experience improvement by developing three telemetry-based haptic rendering algorithms for car racing games. They express the car engine response, collisions with external objects, and the road surface texture, respectively. Building a haptics-enabled driving platform, we conducted a user study comparing gaming experiences between our telemetry-based algorithms and conventional sound-to-tactile conversion algorithms. The results showed that the telemetry-based effects elicited better experiences than the sound-based effects.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated stress and psychological distress among adults with children, with certain populations experiencing a greater mental health burden. The expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) under the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act provided temporary relief to families with children through monthly payments from July through December 2021, offering a unique opportunity to examine the impact of a near-universal cash transfer on adult psychological well-being in the United States. We use the Household Pulse Survey Waves 28-41 (April 14, 2021 to January 10, 2022) to analyze the CTC expansion and Waves 34-42 (July 21, 2021 to February 7, 2022) to examine the expiration of the expanded CTC to investigate the effects of the expanded CTC and its expiration on psychological distress of adults in households with children and its differential effects by gender, education, marital status, and race and ethnicity (N = 167,772). We employ a difference-in-difference methodology by leveraging the policy-induced variation in the additional credits that households are eligible for. Our results indicate that the expanded CTC led to a significant reduction in the percentage of having at least mild symptoms of psychological distress in the overall sample, especially among female, single, married, and Hispanic adults. No significant effects were found on the rate of moderate or severe psychological distress symptoms, suggesting that more severe forms of psychological distress may require more comprehensive and long-term interventions. We find that more adults experienced moderate to severe psychological distress after the monthly CTC payments ended. We discuss the role of the expanded CTC in buffering mental health crises during the pandemic and the implications of the heterogeneous policy effects by subgroups.

RESUMO

A motion effect, the vestibular stimulus generated by a moving chair, is crucial in improving user experiences in many virtual reality (VR) and entertainment applications. However, the perceptual characteristics of motion effects remain unexplored to a great extent. This paper constructs a perceptual space that accounts for many motion effects based on their perceptual distances and then demonstrates smooth-rough and irregular-regular as its two primary perceptual dimensions. An authoring space is constructed with these two pairs as the axes. We also present methods for synthesizing new motion effects with a specific property in the authoring space. The contributions of this work are with new insights into the perceptual characteristics of motion effects and the first design methods of motion effects achieving desired perceptual properties.

During the second half of the 20th century in South Korea, interbasin water transfers (IBWTs) have been used to supply the water demands of basins with insufficient water using water from reservoirs in neighboring basins with ample water. However, since 2000, frequent droughts have resulted in water resource imbalances in donor basins, and basin residents have begun to claim their water rights. Recipient basins have also experienced water shortages and water quality deterioration due to gradual urban growth, agricultural activities, and climate change impacts. In this study, the Mangyeong River basin (1602 km2) was investigated. This basin has received 380 million m3/year of water since 2002 from the Yongdam multipurpose dam (YDD), which is located in another basin. For IBWT modeling, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and an inlet function were applied to model the recipient and donor water quality. Eight scenarios related to water transfer quantity and quality were applied with SWAT to analyze the effects of IBWT on the water quality in the recipient basin. The results showed that an increase in the IBWT amount helped to reduce the nutrient and suspended solids concentrations in the recipient basin when the donor's nutrient and suspended solids concentrations were lower than those in the recipient basin. The IBWT quantity scenarios had a greater impact on the water quality of the recipient basin than the IBWT quality scenarios. These results could provide basic information for use in deciding on the quantity and quality of IBWT between basins that are in conflict.

An amyloidogenic peptide, amyloid-ß (Aß), has been implicated as a contributor to the neurotoxicity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that continues to present a major socioeconomic burden for our society. Recently, the use of metal complexes capable of cleaving peptides has arisen as an efficient tactic for amyloid management; unfortunately, little has been reported to pursue this strategy. Herein, we report a novel approach to validate the hydrolytic cleavage of divalent metal complexes toward two major isoforms of Aß (Aß40 and Aß42) and tune their proteolytic activity based on the choice of metal centers (M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) which could be correlated to their anti-amyloidogenic properties. Such metal-dependent tunability was facilitated employing a tetra-N-methylated cyclam (TMC) ligand that imparts unique geometric and stereochemical control, which has not been available in previous systems. Co(II)(TMC) was identified to noticeably cleave Aß peptides and control their aggregation, reporting the first Co(II) complex for such reactivities to the best of our knowledge. Through detailed mechanistic investigations by biochemical, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, and computational studies, the critical importance of the coordination environment and acidity of the aqua-bound complexes in promoting amide hydrolysis was verified. The biological applicability of Co(II)(TMC) was also illustrated via its potential blood-brain barrier permeability, relatively low cytotoxicity, regulatory capability against toxicity induced by both Aß40 and Aß42 in living cells, proteolytic activity with Aß peptides under biologically relevant conditions, and inertness toward cleavage of structured proteins. Overall, our approaches and findings on reactivities of divalent metal complexes toward Aß, along with the mechanistic insights, demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing such metal complexes for amyloid control.

This study evaluated the reduction effect of non-point source pollution by applying best management practices (BMPs) to a 1.21 km2 small agricultural watershed using a SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. Two meter QuickBird land use data were prepared for the watershed. The SWAT was calibrated and validated using daily streamflow and monthly water quality (total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and suspended solids (SS)) records from 1999 to 2000 and from 2001 to 2002. The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.63 for the streamflow and the coefficients of determination were 0.88, 0.72, and 0.68 for SS, TN, and TP, respectively. Four BMP scenarios viz. the application of vegetation filter strip and riparian buffer system, the regulation of Universal Soil Loss Equation P factor, and the fertilizing control amount for crops were applied and analyzed.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate clinically and histologically the efficiency of self-drilling microimplants as orthodontic anchorage with immediate, continuous, and constant loadings. METHODS: Titanium-alloy microimplants with diameters of 1.2 to 1.3mm were manually placed into the buccal sides of both jaws, including the interradicular areas, in 3 dogs. Implants were placed without predrilling in thin cortical bone areas; in thick cortical bone areas, a 2-mm deep pilot hole was drilled. Thirty-six microimplants, subjected to approximately 200g of immediate horizontal loading, served as the study group. The remaining 8 received no loading and were the controls over the 9-week observation period. The distances of reciprocally loaded microimplants and crevicular pockets were measured at the beginning and end of loading. Serially undecalcified and decalcified sections of the microimplants and surrounding tissues were studied with light and fluorescent microscopes. After 9 weeks of observation, 22 fixtures were easily removed with a screwdriver. Two were broken, and 1 was movable. RESULTS: Histologic analysis showed good osseointegration in all stable samples, and new bone formation and bone apposition to the surface of the threads in loaded and unloaded samples. Histomorphometric evaluation showed high bone-to-implant contact values in the loaded samples, but no significant statistical differences from the unloaded ones. CONCLUSIONS: Titanium alloy microimplants with small diameters (1.2-1.3mm) are strong enough for self-drilling and immediate loading in thin cortical bone areas, but, to reduce the chance of breakage, a drilling of a pilot hole is suggested in thick cortical bone areas.
