RESUMO

Distilled soju, a Korean traditional alcoholic beverage, is produced by fermenting rice with a variety of microorganisms including molds, yeasts, and lactic acid-producing bacteria, followed by distillation. Our study sought to improve the quality of distilled soju through co-fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Wickerhamomyces anomalus, known for producing volatile aromatic compounds during the early stages of fermentation. Analysis of volatile aromatic compounds in co-fermented distilled soju revealed a substantial increase in compounds with boiling points below 200 °C. Among them, ethyl hexanoate, isobutanol, and isoamyl alcohol were identified as the major volatile aromatic compounds based on Log2 fold change analyses of the volatile aromatic compound pattern. In sensory evaluation, co-fermented distilled soju received higher scores in terms of odor and overall preference. Therefore, incorporating W. anomalus may improve the quality of distilled soju.

This study presents the development of conductive polymer-textile composites with outstanding electric heating properties achieved through the in-situ polymerization of polypyrrole on wool-felt fabrics, renowned for their superior thermal insulation. Employing successive layer-by-layer (LBL) cycles facilitated precise control over the uniform deposition of polypyrrole with the fabrics. The investigation focused on the interaction between wool fiber and polypyrrole, evaluating appearance, add-on, and electrical heating performance with varying LBL cycles. The polymerization process resulted in the formation of spherical polypyrrole particles on the wool-felt, with deposition increasing alongside LBL cycle numbers. Mechanical properties, including tensile strength and bending rigidity, exhibited enhancement with polypyrrole deposition, while strain reduction was noted, with minimal influence from LBL cycles. Electrical properties, particularly surface resistance, displayed a rapid decrease up to the second LBL cycle. Concerning electrical heating performance, the application of a 12 V voltage resulted in a linear increase in surface temperature with increasing LBL cycles, peaking at 15.5 â„ƒ. Notably, this sustained electrical heating effect persisted even after voltage removal, attributed to the low thermal conductivity of wool fiber. Moreover, the polypyrrole conductive layer maintained exceptional conductivity following repeated abrasion and washing, credited to improved uniformity through LBL cycles. The synergy of wool's insulating properties and polypyrrole's conductivity, as confirmed in this study, presents the potential for a highly efficient heating fabric. These developed materials exhibited improved heating performance, energy conservation, and minimal change in mechanical properties, making them suitable for applications such as electrical heating smart clothing.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are at an increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI), particularly in community settings, often due to medications. Effective prevention hinges on identifying high-risk patients, yet existing models for predicting AKI risk in older outpatients are scarce, particularly those incorporating medication variables. We aimed to develop an AKI risk prediction model that included medication-related variables for older outpatients. METHODS: We constructed a cohort of 2,272,257 outpatients aged ≥65 years using a national claims database. This cohort was split into a development (70%) and validation (30%) groups. Our primary goal was to identify newly diagnosed AKI within one month of cohort entry in an outpatient context. We screened 170 variables and developed a risk prediction model using logistic regression. RESULTS: The final model integrated 12 variables: 2 demographic, 4 comorbid, and 6 medication-related. It showed good performance with acceptable calibration. In the validation cohort, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value was 0.720 (95% confidence interval, 0.692-0.748). Sensitivity and specificity were 69.9% and 61.9%, respectively. Notably, the model identified high-risk patients as having a 27-fold increased AKI risk compared with low-risk individuals. CONCLUSION: We have developed a new AKI risk prediction model for older outpatients, incorporating critical medication-related variables with good discrimination. This tool may be useful in identifying and targeting patients who may require interventions to prevent AKI in an outpatient setting.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Mitophagy is a cardinal process for maintaining healthy and functional mitochondria. A decline in mitophagy has been associated with age-related pathologies. We aimed to investigate mitophagy changes in age-related balance problems using an animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were divided into young (1 month old) and aged (12 months old) groups. Balance performance, mitochondrial DNA integrity, ATP content, mitophagic process, and mitophagy-related genes and proteins were investigated in both groups. RESULTS: Balance and motor performance were reduced in the aged group. Mitochondrial DNA integrity and ATP content, and mRNA levels of PINK1, Parkin, BNIP3, AMBRA1, MUL1, NIX, Bcl2-L-13, Atg3, Atg5, Atg12, and Atg13 in the vestibule were significantly lower in aged mice compared with those in young mice. The protein levels of PINK1, Parkin, BNIP3, LC3B, and OXPHOS subunits were significantly decreased in the aged vestibule. Mitophagosome and mitophagolysosome counts and the immunohistochemical expression of Parkin and BNIP3 were also decreased in the saccule, utricle, and crista ampullaris in the aged group. CONCLUSION: A general decrease in mitophagy with aging might be attributed to a decrease in cellular function in the aged vestibule during the development of age-related balance problems.

BACKGROUND: The modulation of immune responses by probiotics is crucial for local and systemic immunity. Recent studies have suggested a correlation between gut microbiota and lung immunity, known as the gut-lung axis. However, the evidence and mechanisms underlying this axis remain elusive. RESULTS: In this study, we screened various Lactobacillus (L.) strains for their ability to augment type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling using an IFN-α/ß reporter cell line. We identified L. paracasei (MI29) from the feces of healthy volunteers, which showed enhanced IFN-I signaling in vitro. Oral administration of the MI29 strain to wild-type B6 mice for 2 weeks resulted in increased expression of IFN-stimulated genes and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the lungs. We found that MI29-treated mice had significantly increased numbers of CD11c+PDCA-1+ plasmacytoid dendritic cells and Ly6Chi monocytes in the lungs compared with control groups. Pre-treatment with MI29 for 2 weeks resulted in less weight loss and lower viral loads in the lung after a sub-lethal dose of influenza virus infection. Interestingly, IFNAR1-/- mice did not show enhanced viral resistance in response to oral MI29 administration. Furthermore, metabolic profiles of MI29-treated mice revealed changes in fatty acid metabolism, with MI29-derived fatty acids contributing to host defense in a Gpr40/120-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the newly isolated MI29 strain can activate host defense immunity and prevent infections caused by the influenza virus through the gut-lung axis. BACKGROUND: Although it is known that variation in the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) gene family influences the East Asian alcohol flushing response, knowledge about other genetic variants that affect flushing symptoms is limited. METHODS: We performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis and heritability analysis of alcohol flushing in 15,105 males of East Asian ancestry (Koreans and Chinese) to identify genetic associations with alcohol flushing. We also evaluated whether self-reported flushing can be used as an instrumental variable for alcohol intake. RESULTS: We identified variants in the region of ALDH2 strongly associated with alcohol flushing, replicating previous studies conducted in East Asian populations. Additionally, we identified variants in the alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B) gene region associated with alcohol flushing. Several novel variants were identified after adjustment for the lead variants (ALDH2-rs671 and ADH1B-rs1229984), which need to be confirmed in larger studies. The estimated SNP-heritability on the liability scale was 13% (S.E. = 4%) for flushing, but the heritability estimate decreased to 6% (S.E. = 4%) when the effects of the lead variants were controlled for. Genetic instrumentation of higher alcohol intake using these variants recapitulated known associations of alcohol intake with hypertension. Using self-reported alcohol flushing as an instrument gave a similar association pattern of higher alcohol intake and cardiovascular disease-related traits (e.g. stroke). CONCLUSION: This study confirms that ALDH2-rs671 and ADH1B-rs1229984 are associated with alcohol flushing in East Asian populations. Our findings also suggest that self-reported alcohol flushing can be used as an instrumental variable in future studies of alcohol consumption.

The original appearance and physical properties of smart clothing as well as the electrical properties of the conductive fabric applied, despite utilization and the management environment, need to be maintained. Previous research has only investigated the washability and functional changes of smart textiles according to the environment from the perspective of sensors and fabric material; however, they have not comprehensively considered actual usage conditions. In this study, changes in the appearance, color, chemical components, wettability, and electrical properties of silver-coated conductive knitted fabrics due to exposure to perspiration and washing were investigated based on the manufacturing methods of conductive fabrics. The conductive knitted fabric exposed to perspiration exhibited the most prominent color change, and the surface became rough and hydrophilic as AgCl and AgO were formed through a chemical reaction between perspiration and silver. In contrast, the conductivity of the fabric was enhanced by the release of Ag+ ions via perspiration. After washing, the silver layer on the surface of the conductive knitted fabric peeled off due to the interference and friction between the fabrics caused by the mechanical force generated during the cleaning process. There was no obvious chemical change, but the contact angle decreased as the nano-roughness decreased owing to the removal of silver particles. The conductivity slightly increased after washing but did not show a significant difference at 10% elongation. Finally, as the frequency of exposure to perspiration and washing increased, the silver layer coating the fiber or fabric surface peeled off and was damaged, resulting in a significant color change. Additionally, the chemical composition of the silver layer was significantly altered by perspiration and water and became hydrophilic. Surface resistance also increased linearly as the frequency of exposure to perspiration and washing increased. In terms of hand value, softness and smoothness decreased, and warmness increased after several cycles. Under all conditions, the conductive fabric with silver-coated yarn maintained a more optimized appearance and electrical properties than the silver-coated fabric according to the manufacturing method. Therefore, conductive yarn is more suitable for manufacturing conductive knitted fabrics for smart clothing in terms of durability. Additionally, specific management plans based on the actual use and environment of smart clothing using conductive knitted fabric are urgently needed.

Background: Ginseng has been used as a traditional medicine and functional cosmetic ingredients for many years. Recent studies have focused on the potential biological effects of the ginseng berry and its ingredients. (+)-Syringaresinol (SYR) is enriched in ginseng berry and its beneficial effects on the skin have been recently reported. However, little is known about the its effects on the wound healing process of skin. Methods: Here, we evaluated the skin wound healing effect of (+)-SYR using the human fibroblast Hs68 cell and ex vivo pig and human skin tissue model. Scratch wound test and hydrogen peroxide (HPO) induce chemical wound model were employed. Results: (+)-SYR promoted the migration and proliferation of Hs68 cells without significant cytotoxicity at the tested concentrations. Especially, in ex vivo pig and human skin tissue, HPO-induced chemical wound was recovered almost completely by (+)-SYR. In line with the finding in Hs68, the protein expression levels of TGF-ß and PCNA, a proliferation marker were increased, demonstrating the beneficial effects of (+)-SYR on skin wound repair. Conclusion: Collectively, we demonstrated that (+)-SYR from ginseng berry, can enhance the wound healing effect by accelerating cell proliferation and skin regeneration, suggesting the potential utility of (+)-SYR for skin wound repair.

Background: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially fatal clinical syndrome resulting from the damage or breakdown of skeletal muscle, which can also lead to permanent disabilities. Based on our review of studies on rhabdomyolysis after prolonged surgeries, no other cases of rhabdomyolysis caused by muscle injury in the buttock area following breast reconstruction have been reported, making the current report the first to share information related to patient conditions and treatment progress in such cases. Case Description: Here, we present the case of a 57-year-old Asian patient with left breast cancer. We performed immediate breast reconstruction using a deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap anastomosed to the internal mammary vessels after a skin-sparing mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. The surgery exceeded the estimated time because, after anastomosis, severe congestion was observed in the flap and because of the need to perform re-anastomosis and the reconstruction of the internal mammary vein twice. The surgical team eventually re-performed the breast reconstruction using a contralateral pedicled transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap. The patient underwent breast reconstruction in a sitting position to ensure a symmetrical and natural breast shape resembling its original state. Additionally, a brown splint was placed underneath both legs to keep the hip and knees flexed to ensure donor-site closure when using an abdominal-based flap. The patient was closely monitored in the early postoperative period. On postoperative day (POD) 3, patient developed hypotension and was deemed to have experienced a hypovolemic shock. A complete laboratory workup was performed, and a rhabdomyolysis diagnosis was made based on the laboratory results. We believe that rhabdomyolysis resulted from prolonged pressure on the large gluteus maximus muscle located below the site of the pressure sore in the present patient. Conclusions: Postoperative rhabdomyolysis often results from prolonged surgery. Given the possibility of prolonged procedure time in patients undergoing breast reconstruction, the current case emphasizes the need to identify each patient's risk factors for rhabdomyolysis and prepare for possible rhabdomyolysis to prevent ischemic injuries and reduce the risk of complications such as hypovolemic shock.

BACKGROUND: The systematic review is aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and open distal pancreatectomy and pancreaticoduodenectomy. METHOD: The MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, and clinical trial registries were systematically searched using the PRISMA framework. Studies of adults aged ≥ 18 year comparing laparoscopic and/or robotic versus open DP and/or PD that reported cost of operation or index admission, and cost-effectiveness outcomes were included. The risk of bias of non-randomised studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, while the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB2) tool was used for randomised studies. Standardised mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for continuous variables. RESULTS: Twenty-two studies (152,651 patients) were included in the systematic review and 15 studies in the meta-analysis (3 RCTs; 3 case-controlled; 9 retrospective studies). Of these, 1845 patients underwent MIS (1686 laparoscopic and 159 robotic) and 150,806 patients open surgery. The cost of surgical procedure (SMD 0.89; 95% CI 0.35 to 1.43; I2 = 91%; P = 0.001), equipment (SMD 3.73; 95% CI 1.55 to 5.91; I2 = 98%; P = 0.0008), and operating room occupation (SMD 1.17, 95% CI 0.11 to 2.24; I2 = 95%; P = 0.03) was higher with MIS. However, overall index hospitalisation costs trended lower with MIS (SMD - 0.13; 95% CI - 0.35 to 0.06; I2 = 80%; P = 0.17). There was significant heterogeneity among the studies. CONCLUSION: Minimally invasive major pancreatic surgery entailed higher intraoperative but similar overall index hospitalisation costs.

BACKGROUND: Walking is an important factor in daily life. Among older adults, gait function declines with age. In contrast to the many studies revealing gait differences between young adults and older adults, few studies have further divided older adults into groups. The purpose of this study was to subdivide an older adult population by age to identify age-related differences in functional evaluation, gait characteristics and cardiopulmonary metabolic energy consumption while walking. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 62 old adult participants who were classified into two age groups of 31 participants each as follows: young-old (65-74 years) and old-old (75-84 years) group. Physical functions, activities of daily living, mood state, cognitive function, quality of life, and fall efficacy were evaluated using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Four-square Step Test (FSST), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), Korean Version of the Modified Barthel Index, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Korean Mini-mental State Examination, EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire, and the Korean version of the Fall Efficacy Scale. A three-dimensional motion capture system (Kestrel Digital RealTime System®; Motion Analysis Corporation, Santa Rosa, CA, USA) and two force plates (TF-4060-B; Tec Gihan, Kyoto, Japan) were used to investigate spatiotemporal gait parameters (velocity, cadence, stride length, stride width, step length, single support, stance phase, and swing phase), kinematic variables (hip, knee, and ankle joint angles), and kinetic variables (hip, knee, and ankle joint moment and power) of gait. A portable cardiopulmonary metabolic system (K5; Cosmed, Rome, Italy) was used to measure cardiopulmonary energy consumption. RESULTS: The old-old group showed significantly lower SPPB, FSST, TUG, GDS-SF, and EQ-5D scores (p < 0.05). Among spatiotemporal gait parameters, velocity, stride length, and step length were significantly lower in the old-old group than in the young-old group (p < 0.05). Among the kinematic variables, the knee joint flexion angles during initial contact and terminal swing phase were significantly higher in the old-old than the young-old group (P < 0.05). The old-old group also showed a significantly lower ankle joint plantarflexion angle during the pre- and initial swing phases (P < 0.05). Among the kinetic variables, the hip joint flexion moment and knee joint absorption power in the pre-swing phase were significantly lower in the old-old than the young-old group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that participants 75-84 years of age had less functional gaits than their young-old counterparts (65-74 years old). As the walking pace of old-old people diminishes, driving strength to move ahead and pressure on the knee joint also tend to decrease together with stride length. These differences in gait characteristics according to age among older adults could improve our understanding of how aging causes variations in gait that increase the risk of falls. Older adults of different ages may require customized intervention plans, such as gait training methods, to prevent age-related falls. Three-dimensional (3D) depth information is important to estimate object sizes. The visual system extracts 3D depth information using both binocular cues and monocular cues. However, how these different depth signals interact with each other to compute the object size in 3D space is unclear. Here, we aim to study the relative contribution of monocular and binocular depth information to size perception in a modified Ponzo context by manipulating their relations in a virtual reality environment. Specifically, we compared the amount of the size illusion in the following two conditions, in which monocular cues and binocular disparity in the Ponzo context can indicate the same depth sign (congruent) or opposite depth sign (incongruent). Our results show an increase in the amount of the Ponzo illusion in the congruent condition. In contrast, in the incongruent condition, we find that the two cues indicating the opposite depth signs do not cancel out the Ponzo illusion, suggesting that the effects of the two cues are not equal. Rather, binocular disparity information seems to be suppressed and the size judgment is mainly dependent on the monocular depth information when the two cues are in conflict. Our results suggest that monocular and binocular depth signals are fused for size perception only when they both indicate the same depth sign and top-down 3D depth information based on monocular cues contributes more to size perception than binocular disparity when they are in conflict in virtual reality.

INTRODUCTION: With the availability of retrospective pharmacovigilance data, the common data model (CDM) has been identified as an efficient approach towards anonymized multicenter analysis; however, the establishment of a suitable model for individual medical systems and applications supporting their analysis is a challenge. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to construct a specialized Korean CDM (K-CDM) for pharmacovigilance systems based on a clinical scenario to detect adverse drug reactions (ADRs). METHODS: De-identified patient records (n = 5,402,129) from 13 institutions were converted to the K-CDM. From 2005 to 2017, 37,698,535 visits, 39,910,849 conditions, 259,594,727 drug exposures, and 30,176,929 procedures were recorded. The K-CDM, which comprises three layers, is compatible with existing models and is potentially adaptable to extended clinical research. Local codes for electronic medical records (EMRs), including diagnosis, drug prescriptions, and procedures, were mapped using standard vocabulary. Distributed queries based on clinical scenarios were developed and applied to K-CDM through decentralized or distributed networks. RESULTS: Meta-analysis of drug relative risk ratios from ten institutions revealed that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increased the risk of gastrointestinal hemorrhage by twofold compared with aspirin, and non-vitamin K anticoagulants decreased cerebrovascular bleeding risk by 0.18-fold compared with warfarin. CONCLUSION: These results are similar to those from previous studies and are conducive for new research, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of K-CDM for pharmacovigilance. However, the low quality of original EMR data, incomplete mapping, and heterogeneity between institutions reduced the validity of the analysis, thus necessitating continuous calibration among researchers, clinicians, and the government.

Wearable assistive robotics has emerged as a promising technology to supplement or replace motor functions and to retrain people recovering from an injury or living with reduced mobility. We developed delayed output feedback control for a wearable hip-assistive robot, the EX1, to provide gait assistance. Our purpose in this study was to investigate the effects of long-term exercise with EX1 on gait, physical function, and cardiopulmonary metabolic energy efficiency in elderly people. This study used parallel experimental (exercise with EX1) and control groups (exercise without EX1). A total of 60 community-dwelling elderly persons participated in 18 exercise intervention sessions during 6 weeks, and all participants were assessed at 5 time points: before exercise, after 9 exercise sessions, after 18 sessions, and 1 month and 3 months after the last session. The spatiotemporal gait parameters, kinematics, kinetics, and muscle strength of the trunk and lower extremities improved more after exercise with EX1 than in that without EX1. Furthermore, the effort of muscles over the trunk and lower extremities throughout the total gait cycle (100%) significantly decreased after exercise with EX1. The net metabolic energy costs during walking significantly improved, and functional assessment scores improved more in the experimental group than in the control group. Our findings provide evidence supporting the application of EX1 in physical activity and gait exercise is effective to improve age-related declines in gait, physical function, and cardiopulmonary metabolic efficiency among older adults.

Cinnamon is a natural spice with a wide range of pharmacological functions, including anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-tumor activities. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of cinnamaldehyde-rich cinnamon extract (CRCE) on the colorectal cancer cell lines HCT 116 and HT-29. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis of a lipophilic extract of cinnamon revealed the dominance of trans-cinnamaldehyde. Cells treated with CRCE (10-60 µg/mL) showed significantly decreased cell viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner. We also observed that cell proliferation and migration capacity were inhibited in CRCE-treated cells. In addition, a remarkable increase in the number of sub-G1-phase cells was observed with arrest at the G2 phase by CRCE treatment. CRCE also induced mitochondrial stress, and finally, CRCE treatment resulted in activation of apoptotic proteins Caspase-3, -9, and PARP and decreased levels of mu-2-related death-inducing gene protein expression with BH3-interacting domain death agonist (BID) activation.

Demand for wearable devices and supportive technology is growing as these devices have the potential to enhance physical function and quality of life in users. The purpose of this study was to investigate usability and satisfaction after performing functional and gait exercise with a wearable hip exoskeleton in community-living adults. A total of 225 adults residing in the local community participated in this study. All participants performed 40 min of exercise once with a wearable hip exoskeleton in various environments. The EX1, which functions as a wearable hip exoskeleton, was used. Physical function was assessed before and after exercise with the EX1. After completing exercise with the EX1, the usability and satisfaction questionnaires were evaluated. Gait speed, timed up and go test (TUG), and four square step test (FSST) showed statistically significant improvements after exercise with the EX1 in both groups (p < 0.05). In the 6 min walking test (6MWT), a significant increase was observed in the middle-aged group (p < 0.05). In the short physical performance battery (SPPB), there was a significant improvement in the old-aged group (p < 0.05). On the other hand, positive results in usability and satisfaction were noticed in both groups. These results demonstrate that a single session of exercise with the EX1 was effective in improving physical performance of both middle- and old-aged adults, with positive feedback from most of the participants.

AIMS: Few studies have quantified the impact of risk factors on GI complications in elderly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) users. This study aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction score for severe GI complications to identify high-risk elderly patients using NSAID. METHODS: We used the following two Korean claims datasets: customized data with an enrolment period 2016-2017 for model development, and the sample data in 2019 for external validation. We conducted a nested case-control study for model development and validation. NSAID users were identified as the elderly (≥65 years) who received NSAIDs for more than 30 days. Serious GI complications were defined as hospitalizations or emergency department visits, with a main diagnosis of GI bleeding or perforation. We applied the logistic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model for variable selection and model fitting. RESULTS: We identified 8176 cases and 81 760 controls with a 1:10 matched follow-up period in the derivation cohort. In the external validation cohort, we identified 372 cases from 254 551 patients. The risk predictors were high-dose NSAIDs, nonselective NSAID, complicated GI ulcer history, male sex, concomitant gastroprotective agents, relevant co-medications, severe renal disease and cirrhosis. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.77-0.81) in the external validation dataset. CONCLUSIONS: The prediction model may be a useful tool for reducing the risk of serious GI complications by identifying high-risk elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Bioterrorism is terrorism that causes death, injury, or illness by the intentional release of viruses, bacteria, fungi, or toxins. Bioterrorism cannot be prevented; therefore, having the ability to recognize and respond to the consequences of infection caused by biological agents is imperative. This study aimed to examine the level of bioterrorism preparedness and identify the influencing factors of bioterrorism preparedness among nurses, who are early responders to bioterrorism. METHODS: This study had a predictive correlational study design. It surveyed 245 clinical nurses currently working in general hospitals. We used a structured questionnaire consisting of items about general characteristics, knowledge about bioterrorism, awareness of bioterrorism risk, perception of institutional bioterrorism preparedness, attitude toward bioterrorism, and bioterrorism preparedness. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and by performing a t-test, chi-square test, analysis of variance, post-hoc test, correlational analysis, and regression analysis. RESULTS: Bioterrorism preparedness was significantly positively correlated with the perception of institutional and frontline bioterrorism preparedness and attitude toward bioterrorism. It was also significantly influenced by sex, undergraduate bioterrorism education, employee bioterrorism education, perception of governmental bioterrorism preparedness, and attitude toward bioterrorism. The greatest predictors of bioterrorism preparedness were attitude toward bioterrorism, perception of institutional bioterrorism preparedness, and undergraduate bioterrorism education, which explained 39 % of the variance of bioterrorism preparedness. CONCLUSION: This study found that clinical nurses' awareness and attitude toward bioterrorism are important factors in their bioterrorism preparedness and that attention to and education about bioterrorism are crucial to enhance clinical nurses' bioterrorism preparedness. Continued research is needed to establish a bioterrorism response system and relevant educational programs.

Robotic technology has developed rapidly in recent years, and several robotic devices have been applied to improve physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological, and social functioning in the elderly and people with disabilities. In this study, we investigated the effects of EX1-assisted exercise in various environments on physical function, muscle strength, and walking efficiency in older adults. We designated four experimental conditions and randomly assigned participants to one of four groups: A (overground walking without an EX1), B (overground walking using the resistance mode of EX1), C (stair ascent using the assistance mode of EX1), and Group D (inclined treadmill walking using the assistance mode of EX1). A total of 60 community-dwelling elderly persons participated in 10 exercise intervention sessions for 4 weeks, and all participants were assessed before and after the exercise intervention. Physical function was measured by the 10-meter walk test for self-selected velocity (10MWT-SSV), short physical performance battery (SPPB), Berg balance scale (BBS), timed up and go (TUG), functional reach test (FRT), geriatric depression scale-short form (GDS-SF), and muscle strength of trunk and lower extremity. Cardiopulmonary metabolic energy efficiency was measured using a portable telemetric gas analyzer system. A significant increase in the 10MWT-SSV and TUG test was observed in groups B, C, and D. A statistically significant improvement in the SPPB and FRT was seen only in group D, and GDS-SF scores decreased significantly after exercise with an EX1 in groups B and D. Trunk and lower limb muscle strength increased more in the groups that exercised with EX1 assistance than those without an EX1, particularly in group B. The net metabolic energy costs and energy expenditure measurement during walking significantly improved in exercise groups C and D. The findings in this study support the application of the EX1 to physical activity and exercise to improve age-related changes in physical function, muscle strength, and walking efficiency among older adults. In addition, personalized exercise programs using different modes and training environments with an EX1 can enhance physical performance and walking efficiency in the elderly.

This study attempted to develop a superhydrophobic conductive fabric to solve the problem of functional deterioration due to oxidation of conductive fabrics. To this end, a superhydrophobic surface was achieved by introducing nano-roughness to the surface of the polyester-conductive fabric by using alkaline hydrolysis, and then lowering the surface energy through hydrophobic coating. In order to derive optimal processing conditions with excellent superhydrophobicity while maintaining conductivity and mechanical properties, changes in surface structure, conductivity, superhydrophobicity and durability of conductivity against air and water were evaluated according to alkaline hydrolysis duration. As the alkaline hydrolysis duration increased, the polyester surface was etched and the silver oxide particles formed on the conductive yarns, creating non-uniform nano-roughness. The weight, tensile strength, and strain of the conductive fabric decreased due to alkaline hydrolysis, and the change was noticeable after 30 min of alkaline hydrolysis. In addition, as the alkaline hydrolysis duration increased, the surface resistance of the conductive fabric slightly increased and the surface temperature by electric heating performance decreased, but it still showed excellent conductivity. After 30 min of alkaline hydrolysis, a contact angle of more than 150° and a shedding angle of less than 10° achieved a superhydrophobic surface. This superhydrophobic surface prevented the reaction of silver with air or water in spite of prolonged exposure to air and repeated contact with water to maintain electrical properties, thereby improving the durability of conductivity. This study is significant in that it achieved dual roughness for superhydrophobicity on the surface of conductive fabrics using a relatively easy and simple method by applying alkaline hydrolysis, which is commonly used with polyester fabric. Therefore, it is expected to solve the problem of conductivity loss of the use of conductive fabric in various environments.
