RESUMO

Previous research on college campus environments, student mental health, and COVID-19 has primarily focused on individual-level factors, with limited attention to the broader institutional characteristics. Objective and Methods: Using the national survey data from the American College Health Association, this study examines the influence of both individual-level and institutional-level characteristics on college students' stress, psychological distress, and psychological well-being, before and during COVID-19. Results: (1) COVID-19 significantly impacted students' mental health; (2) institutional-level factors, such as school size, locale, region, and religiously affiliation, were significant predictors of mental health outcomes; and (3) individual-level variables, including gender, age, race/ethnicity, relationship status, moderated the relationship between COVID-19 and mental health. Conclusion: This study suggests the need to consider various institutional contexts in future efforts to understand predictors of mental health conditions and resilience.

With the introduction of deep learning, a significant amount of research has been conducted in the field of computer vision in the past decade. In particular, research on object detection (OD) continues to progress rapidly. However, despite these advances, some limitations need to be overcome to enable real-world applications of deep learning-based OD models. One such limitation is inaccurate OD when image quality is poor or a target object is small. The performance degradation phenomenon for small objects is similar to the fundamental limitations of an OD model, such as the constraint of the receptive field, which is a difficult problem to solve using only an OD model. Therefore, OD performance can be hindered by low image quality or small target objects. To address this issue, this study investigates the compatibility of super-resolution (SR) and OD techniques to improve detection, particularly for small objects. We analyze the combination of SR and OD models, classifying them based on architectural characteristics. The experimental results show a substantial improvement when integrating OD detectors with SR models. Overall, it was demonstrated that, when the evaluation metrics (PSNR, SSIM) of the SR models are high, the performance in OD is correspondingly high as well. Especially, evaluations on the MS COCO dataset reveal that the enhancement rate for small objects is 9.4% higher compared to all objects. This work provides an analysis of SR and OD model compatibility, demonstrating the potential benefits of their synergistic combination. The experimental code can be found on our GitHub repository.

Three-dimensional microextrusion bioprinting technology uses pneumatics, pistons, or screws to transfer and extrude bioinks containing biomaterials and cells to print biological tissues and organs. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis can simulate the flow characteristics of bioinks in a control volume, and the effect on cell viability can be predicted by calculating the physical quantities. In this study, we developed an analysis system to predict the effect of a screw-based dispenser system (SDS) on cell viability in bioinks through rheological and CFD analyses. Furthermore, carboxymethylcellulose/alginate-based bioinks were used for the empirical evaluation of high-viscous bioinks. The viscosity of bioinks was determined by rheological measurement, and the viscosity coefficient for the CFD analysis was derived from a correlation equation by non-linear regression analysis. The mass flow rate derived from the analysis was successfully validated by comparison with that from the empirical evaluation. Finally, the cell viability was confirmed after bioprinting with bioinks containing C2C12 cells, suggesting that the developed SDS may be suitable for application in the field of bioengineering. Consequently, the developed bioink analysis system is applicable to a wide range of systems and materials, contributing to time and cost savings in the bioengineering industry.

Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between the neighborhood environments and residents' health. However, other important settings, such as university campuses, have received little attention. This paper conducted a systematic review and synthesized existing empirical works examining the association between the university/college campuses built and natural environments and students' health. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we searched nine databases using keywords related to higher-education campuses and health-related outcomes. A total of 19 articles were identified, including fifteen cross-sectional studies, three experimental studies, and one longitudinal study. The majority of the studies were conducted in Asian countries and published in the past five years. The findings indicate that active transportation infrastructure, such as increased road intersections and better walkability, were found to be positively associated with students' physical activity. The natural environments, including perceived naturalness, blue space, and greenness was shown to support student's mental health and quality of life. Specifically, blue space was found to be the most preferred place for mental restoration, and scattered trees demonstrated a supportive effect in reducing depression symptoms. Even just viewing virtual trees had a restorative effect and feel less anxiety. Additionally, during the summer, tree shadows were identified as the most important factors for enhancing thermal comfort. This review emphasizes the crucial role of campus environments in promoting college students' health. Future longitudinal studies and investigations using multiple campuses would provide a more comprehensive understanding of this relationship. Such endeavors can contribute to the development of evidence-based strategies for designing and planning healthy campus environments that optimize students' well-being.

PURPOSE: Measuring working memory at hearing clinics is important. This study attempted to develop a test protocol that measures auditory working memory using a standardized monosyllabic word list in Korean Speech Audiometry (KSA). METHOD: We included 25 young adults with normal hearing in this study. Participants conducted word recognition and word span tests concurrently using the KSA monosyllabic word lists. We designed four test conditions according to the presence or absence of background noise and word recall order: quiet-forward (QF), quiet-backward (QB), noise-forward, (NF), and noise-backward (NB). We implemented digit span tests in the Korean Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV (K-WAIS-IV) to determine the validity of the working memory outcomes. RESULTS: Word recognition scores of QF and QB were significantly higher than those of NF and NB. The percentages of correctly recalled words and word recall span scores were highest in QF and lowest in NB. Overall, the Pearson correlation and multiple regression statistics showed that our word span test outcomes for QB and NF were highly associated with digit span scores on the K-WAIS-IV. CONCLUSION: Our proposed test protocol showed the possibility of measuring auditory working memory and monosyllabic word recognition simultaneously by validating the results with K-WAIS-IV outcomes.

RESUMO

Increasing evidence reinforces the essential function of RNA modifications in development and diseases, especially in the nervous system. RNA modifications impact various processes in the brain, including neurodevelopment, neurogenesis, neuroplasticity, learning and memory, neural regeneration, neurodegeneration, and brain tumorigenesis, leading to the emergence of a new field termed neuroepitranscriptomics. Deficiency in machineries modulating RNA modifications has been implicated in a range of brain disorders from microcephaly, intellectual disability, seizures, and psychiatric disorders to brain cancers such as glioblastoma. The inaugural NSAS Challenge Workshop on Brain Epitranscriptomics hosted in Crans-Montana, Switzerland in 2023 assembled a group of experts from the field, to discuss the current state of the field and provide novel translational perspectives. A summary of the discussions at the workshop is presented here to simulate broader engagement from the general neuroscience field.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based training programs have consistently shown efficacy in stress reduction. However, questions regarding the optimal duration and most effective delivery methods remain. OBJECTIVE: This research explores a 4-week neurofeedback-assisted mindfulness training for employees via a mobile app. The study's core query is whether incorporating neurofeedback can amplify the benefits on stress reduction and related metrics compared with conventional mindfulness training. METHODS: A total of 92 full-time employees were randomized into 3 groups: group 1 received mobile mindfulness training with neurofeedback assistance (n=29, mean age 39.72 years); group 2 received mobile mindfulness training without neurofeedback (n=32, mean age 37.66 years); and group 3 were given self-learning paper materials on stress management during their first visit (n=31, mean age 38.65 years). The primary outcomes were perceived stress and resilience scales. The secondary outcomes were mindfulness awareness, emotional labor, occupational stress, insomnia, and depression. Heart rate variability and electroencephalography were measured for physiological outcomes. These measurements were collected at 3 different times, namely, at baseline, immediately after training, and at a 4-week follow-up. The generalized estimating equation model was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The 4-week program showed significant stress reduction (Wald χ22=107.167, P<.001) and improvements in psychological indices including resilience, emotional labor, insomnia, and depression. A significant interaction was observed in resilience (time × group, Wald χ42=10.846, P=.02). The post hoc analysis showed a statistically significant difference between groups 1 (least squares mean [LSM] 21.62, SE 0.55) and 3 (LSM 19.90, SE 0.61) at the posttraining assessment (P=.008). Group 1 showed a significant improvement (P<.001) at the posttraining assessment, with continued improvements through the 1-month follow-up assessment period (LSM 21.55, SE 0.61). Physiological indices were analyzed only for data of 67 participants (22 in group 1, 22 in group 2, and 23 in group 3) due to the data quality. The relaxation index (ratio of alpha to high beta power) from the right electroencephalography channel showed a significant interaction (time × group, Wald χ22=6.947, P=.03), with group 1 revealing the highest improvement (LSM 0.43, SE 0.15) compared with groups 2 (LSM -0.11, SE 0.10) and 3 (LSM 0.12, SE 0.10) at the 1-month follow-up assessment. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that the neurofeedback-assisted group achieved superior outcomes in resilience and relaxation during the 4-week mobile mindfulness program. (1) Background: The government of South Korea has established a nationwide web- and mobile-based emergency teleconsultation network by designating urban and rural hospitals. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and effectiveness of the tele-emergency system in South Korea. (2) Methods: Tele-emergency consultation cases from May 2015 to December 2018 were analyzed in the present study. The definition of a tele-emergency in the present study is an emergency consultation between doctors in rural and urban hospitals via a web- and mobile-based remote emergency consultation system (RECS). Consultations through an RECS are grouped into three categories: medical procedure or treatment guidance, image interpretation, and transportation requests. The present study analyzed the characteristics of the tele-emergency system and the reduction in unnecessary transportation (RUT). (3) Results: A total of 2604 cases were analyzed in the present study from 2985 tele-emergency consultation cases. A total of 381 cases were excluded for missing data. Consultations for image interpretation were the most common in trauma cases (71.3%), while transfer requests were the most common in non-trauma cases (50.3%). Trauma patients were more frequently admitted to rural hospitals or discharged and followed up with at rural hospitals (20.3% vs. 40.5%) after consultations. In terms of disease severity, non-severe cases were statistically higher in trauma cases (80.6% vs. 59.4%; p < 0.001). The RUT was statistically highly associated with trauma cases (60.8% vs. 42.8%; p < 0.001). In an analysis that categorized cases by region, a statistically higher proportion of transportation was used in island regions (69.9% vs. 49.5%; p < 0.003). More RUT was associated with non-island regions (30.1% vs. 50.5%; p = 0.001). (4) Conclusions: The tele-emergency system had a great role in reducing unnecessary patient transportation in non-severe trauma cases and non-island rural area emergency cases. Further research is needed for a cost/benefit analysis and clinical outcomes.

Oncolytic viruses are of significant clinical interest due to their ability to directly infect and kill tumors and enhance the anti-tumor immune response. Previously, we developed KLS-3010, a novel oncolytic virus derived from the International Health Department-White (IHD-W) strain vaccinia virus, which has robust tumoricidal effects. In the present study, we generated a recombinant oncolytic virus, KLS-3020, by inserting three transgenes (hyaluronidase [PH-20], interleukin-12 [IL-12], and soluble programmed cell death 1 fused to the Fc domain [sPD1-Fc]) into KLS-3010 and investigated its anti-tumor efficacy and ability to induce anti-tumor immune responses in CT26.WT and B16F10 mouse tumor models. A single injection of KLS-3020 significantly decreased tumor growth. The roles of the transgenes were investigated using viruses expressing each single transgene alone and KLS-3020. PH-20 promoted virus spread and tumor immune cell infiltration, IL-12 activated and reprogrammed T cells to inflammatory phenotypes, and sPD1-Fc increased intra-tumoral populations of activated T cells. The tumor-specific systemic immune response and the abscopal tumor control elicited by KLS-3020 were demonstrated in the CT26.WT tumor model. The insertion of transgenes into KLS-3020 increased its anti-tumor efficacy, supporting further clinical investigation of KLS-3020 as a novel oncolytic immunotherapy.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting holds great promise for tissue engineering, allowing cells to thrive in a 3D environment. However, the applicability of natural polymers such as silk fibroin (SF) in 3D bioprinting faces hurdles due to limited mechanical strength and printability. SF, derived from the silkworm Bombyx mori, is emerging as a potential bioink due to its inherent physical gelling properties. However, research on inducing thermosensitive behavior in SF-based bioinks and tailoring their mechanical properties to specific tissue requirements is notably lacking. This study addresses these gaps through the development of silk fibroin-based thermosensitive bioinks (SF-TPBs). Precise modulation of gelation time and mechanical robustness is achieved by manipulating glycerol content without recourse to cross-linkers. Chemical analysis confirms ß-sheet conformation in SF-TPBs independent of glycerol concentration. Increased glycerol content improves gelation kinetics and results in rheological properties suitable for 3D printing. Overall, SF-TPBs offer promising prospects for realizing the potential of 3D bioprinting using natural polymers.

Three-dimensional (3D) printed calcium phosphate cement (CPC) scaffolds are increasingly being used for bone tissue repair. Traditional materials used for CPC scaffolds, such as bovine and porcine bone, generally contain low amounts of calcium phosphate compounds, resulting in reduced production rates of CPC scaffolds. On the other hand, cockle shells contain more than 99% CaCO3 in the form of amorphous aragonite with excellent biocompatibility, which is expected to increase the CPC production rate. In this study, 3D-printed cockle shell powder-based CPC (CSP-CPC) scaffolds were developed by the material extrusion method. Lactic acid and hyaluronic acid were used to promote the printability. The characterization of CSP-CPC scaffolds was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns, and scanning electron microscopy. The biocompatibility of CSP-CPC scaffolds was evaluated using cell viability, Live/Dead, and alkaline phosphatase assays. In addition, CSP-CPC scaffolds were implanted into the mouse calvarial defect model to confirm bone regeneration. This study provides an opportunity to create high value added in fishing villages by recycling natural products from marine waste.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and mortality among older adults in South Korea. METHODS: Using Korean National Health Insurance data from January 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022, we analyzed the impact of various factors, including age, comorbidity burden, and insurance type, on COVID-19 infection and mortality rates. RESULTS: Age was the most significant risk factor for mortality in older adults. A higher comorbidity burden was also associated with increased infection (odds ratio [OR]=1.33 for Charlson Comorbidity Index [CCI] ≥2, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.321-1.339) and mortality (OR=1.537 for CCI ≥2, 95% CI 1.459-1.618) rates. While Medical Aid recipients exhibited lower infection rates (OR=0.898, 95% CI 0.89-0.906) than National Health Insurance beneficiaries, they had higher mortality rates (OR=1.692, 95% CI 1.623-1.763). CONCLUSION: These results emphasized the need to prioritize vaccination and allocate healthcare resources for older adults, particularly those with multiple comorbidities. Addressing socioeconomic disparities and ensuring equitable access to testing and healthcare services are crucial for mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on older adults.

BACKGROUND: Studies exploring the racial/ethnicity disparity of the impact of heat on hospital admission are notably limited, especially in Texas, a state with a diverse population and consistently ranking among the top ten U.S. states for heat-related deaths per capita from 2018 to 2020. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to determine the correlation between elevated temperatures and emergency hospital admissions for various causes and age groups across 12 Metropolitan Statistical Areas(MSAs) in Texas. Additionally, we aim to investigate health inequalities in the five largest MSAs in Texas between 2004 and 2013. METHODS: We used MSA-level hospital admission and weather data to estimate the relationship between heat and emergency hospital admissions. We applied a Generalized Additive Model and random effects meta-analysis to calculate MSA-specific associations and overall correlation, repeating the analysis for age groups and specific causes of admission. We also investigated health disparities across racial and ethnic groups and performed a sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that a 1 °C increase in temperature was associated with a 0.50% (95% CI [0.38%, 0.63%]) increase in all-cause emergency hospital admissions. Heat's impact on hospital admissions varied among age groups and causes, with children under 6 years showing the highest effect estimate (0.64% (95% CI [0.32%,0.96%])). Statistically significant associations were found for Cardiovascular Diseases (0.27% (95% CI [0.07%,0.47%])), Ischemic Heart Diseases (0.53% (95% CI [0.15%,0.92%])), Pneumonia (0.70% (95% CI [0.25%,1.16%])), and Respiratory Diseases (0.67% (95% CI [0.18%,1.17%])). Health disparities were found among racial and ethnic groups in the five largest MSAs. IMPACT STATEMENT: Studies exploring the impact of heat on hospital admission in Texas are notably limited. Our research provided a comprehensive examination of the connection between heat and emergency hospital admissions throughout Texas. Furthermore, we are the first to examine racial/ethnic disparities, identifying African American and Hispanic groups as disproportionately affected. These insights provide valuable insights for policymakers to allocate resources and implement strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of rising temperatures.

This paper describes protocols and experiences from a seven-year natural-experiment study in El Paso, Texas, a border city of predominantly Latino/Hispanic population. The study focuses on how Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) impacts physical activity and thus plays a role in alleviating obesity and related chronic diseases that impact healthy aging. Our protocols describe a longitudinal and case-comparison study, which compared residents exposed to new BRT stations with those who were not. This paper also introduces lessons and experiences to overcome the following challenges: delays in the BRT opening (the main intervention), the COVID-19 pandemic, methodological challenges, participant recruitment and retention, and predatory survey takers. Our transdisciplinary approach was pivotal in addressing these challenges. We also proposed and tested multi-level intervention strategies to reduce modifiable barriers to transit use. Our most important takeaway for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers is the importance of being flexible and ready to adapt to new circumstances. Future natural-experiment researchers need to become more versatile in an increasingly volatile and uncertain world.

Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease, characterized by the production of autoantibodies and high cholesterol levels. HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A) reductase inhibitors have exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in several clinical trials. We conducted this study to evaluate the effect of rosuvastatin on inflammatory responses in lupus-prone mice. Methods: MRL/lpr mice were intraperitoneally injected with rosuvastatin (10 mg/kg, n=4) or vehicle (2% dimethyl sulfoxide, n=4) five times a week from 13 to 17 weeks of age. The serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and autoantibodies were measured, as well as the urine levels of albumin. Renal tissues were stained for histopathological analysis. Concentrations of key inflammatory cytokines were measured in the serum, and messenger RNA (mRNA) levels in target organs (kidney, spleen, and lymph nodes) were evaluated. Results: Rosuvastatin treatment significantly decreased serum LDL cholesterol concentration in MRL/lpr mice. However, the clinical manifestations and autoantibody titres did not improve with rosuvastatin treatment. In addition, serum inflammatory cytokines and proteinuria did not change. Histopathological analysis of the kidneys revealed no improvement. When assessing the expression of mRNA, treatment with rosuvastatin decreased tumor necrosis alpha and interleukin-17 concentration in spleen and kidney tissue and in the kidneys and lymph nodes of MRL/lpr mice, respectively. Conclusion: Although it can decrease inflammatory cytokines in the lymphoid organs and kidneys of MRL/lpr mice, treatment with rosuvastatin is insufficient to alleviate SLE.

BACKGROUND: Many countries and communities in sub-Saharan Africa suffer from inadequate access to healthcare and healthy lifestyles as reflected in their high mortality and morbidity rates. Large-scale interventions like the medical city project presented in this article are necessary to address the significant health burdens faced by populations in this region. OBJECTIVES: This article shows how evidence-based approaches and multisectoral partnerships guided the development of the 327-acre Medical City master plan in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. This is envisioned to be the first-of-its-kind medical city in this medically underserved "healthcare desert." METHODS: The five-phased, seven-year (2013-2020) master planning process was guided by the overarching design framework of "sustainable one health" along with its 11 objectives and 64 performance measures. The data/evidence used to guide the planning decision-making process came from case studies, literature reviews, stakeholder interviews, and on-site investigations. RESULTS: The outcome of this project is a comprehensive medical city master plan that includes a self-contained, mixed-use community anchored by a hospital and a primary healthcare village. This medical city provides access to the full range of healthcare services (e.g., curative-to-preventive, traditional-to-alternative) and is supported by multimodal transportation systems and extensive green infrastructure. CONCLUSIONS: This project offers theoretical and practical insights on "designing for health" in a frontier market while responding to the complex local contexts that present many unique challenges and opportunities. Those insights provide useful lessons for researchers and professionals interested in promoting health and healthcare services in healthcare deserts.

Virtual memory T (TVM) cells are a T cell subtype with a memory phenotype but no prior exposure to foreign antigen. Although TVM cells have antiviral and antibacterial functions, whether these cells can be pathogenic effectors of inflammatory disease is unclear. Here we identified a TVM cell-originated CD44super-high(s-hi)CD49dlo CD8+ T cell subset with features of tissue residency. These cells are transcriptionally, phenotypically and functionally distinct from conventional CD8+ TVM cells and can cause alopecia areata. Mechanistically, CD44s-hiCD49dlo CD8+ T cells could be induced from conventional TVM cells by interleukin (IL)-12, IL-15 and IL-18 stimulation. Pathogenic activity of CD44s-hiCD49dlo CD8+ T cells was mediated by NKG2D-dependent innate-like cytotoxicity, which was further augmented by IL-15 stimulation and triggered disease onset. Collectively, these data suggest an immunological mechanism through which TVM cells can cause chronic inflammatory disease by innate-like cytotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology was developed to improve surgical accuracy and minimize errors in surgical planning and orthognathic surgery. However, its accurate implementation during surgery remains a challenge. Hence, we compared the accuracy and stability of conventional orthognathic surgery and the novel modalities, such as virtual simulation and three-dimensional (3D) titanium-printed customized surgical osteotomy guides and plates. METHODS: This prospective study included 12 patients who were willing to undergo orthognathic surgery. The study group consisted of patients who underwent orthognathic two-jaw surgery using 3D-printed patient-specific plates processed by selective laser melting and an osteotomy guide; orthognathic surgery was also performed by the surgeon directly bending the ready-made plate in the control group. Based on the preoperative computed tomography images and intraoral 3D scan data, a 3D virtual surgery plan was implemented in the virtual simulation module, and the surgical guide and bone fixation plate were fabricated. The accuracy and stability were evaluated by comparing the results of the preoperative virtual simulation (T0) to those at 7 days (T1) and 6 months (T2) post-surgery. RESULT: The accuracy (ΔT1‒T0) and stability (ΔT2‒T1) measurements, using 11 anatomical references, both demonstrated more accurate results in the study group. The mean difference of accuracy for the study group (0.485 ± 0.280 mm) was significantly lower than in the control group (1.213 ± 0.716 mm) (P < 0.01). The mean operation time (6.83 ± 0.72 h) in the control group was longer than in the study group (5.76 ± 0.43 h) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This prospective clinical study demonstrated the accuracy, stability, and effectiveness of using virtual preoperative simulation and patient-customized osteotomy guides and plates for orthognathic surgery.

Purpose: Although its efficacy is uncertain, an intraoperative air leak test (ALT) is commonly used to detect mechanical defects following bowel anastomosis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ALT to detect anastomotic leakage (AL) following rectal excision. Methods: We reviewed our database for patients with rectal cancers who had undergone curative surgery between January 2012 and January 2018. Patients were grouped according to whether or not an ALT was performed. Propensity score analyses were performed to compare outcomes for groups in a 1:1 case-matched cohort. Results: In total, 1,191 patients underwent rectal excision; 438 (219 in each group) formed the case-matched cohort for analysis. The protective stoma rate was 16.0% and 14.6% in the ALT and the no-ALT groups, respectively (P = 0.791). In the ALT group, 2 patients (0.9%) showed a positive result and were treated with rectal tube drainage, resulting in no leakage. There was no significant difference in postoperative AL rate between the groups (ALT group: 4.6% vs. no-ALT group: 4.1%, P > 0.999). Conclusion: ALT played a minimal role in detecting AL following rectal excision. Further studies are warranted to validate our results and clarify whether AL can be prevented with ALT or alternative methods.

A diboronic acid anthracene-based fluorescent system for detecting blood glucose could be used for 180 days. However, there has not yet been a boronic acid immobilized electrode to selectively detect glucose in a signal-increased way. Considering malfunctions of sensors at high sugar levels, the electrochemical signal should be increased proportionally to the glucose concentration. Therefore, we synthesized a new diboronic acid derivative and fabricated the derivative-immobilized electrodes for the selective detection of glucose. We performed cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with an Fe(CN)63-/4- redox pair for detecting glucose in the range of 0-500 mg/dL. The analysis revealed increased electron-transfer kinetics such as increased peak current and decreased semicircle radius of Nyquist plots as the glucose concentration increased. The cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy showed that the linear detection range of glucose was 40 to 500 mg/dL with limits of detection of 31.2 mg/dL and 21.5 mg/dL, respectively. We applied the fabricated electrode to detect glucose in artificial sweat and obtained 90% of the performance of the electrodes in PBS. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of other sugars such as galactose, fructose, and mannitol also showed linear increased peak currents proportional to the concentrations of the tested sugars. However, the slopes of the sugars were lower than that of glucose, indicating selectivity for glucose. These results proved the newly synthesized diboronic acid is a promising synthetic receptor for developing a long-term usable electrochemical sensor system.
