Ziziphus joazeiro Mart. is an endemic plant of the Caatinga that presents a great socioeconomic importance for the Northeast and Semiarid Region of Brazil. In view of this, this study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity and anxiolytic-like effects of Ziziphus joazeiro Mart leaves in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). The characterization of the main classes of metabolites was performed through chemical reactions. The antibacterial and antibiotic potentiating activity was evaluated by broth microdilution assays. The 96 h acute toxicity, open field test and anxiety models test was evaluated in vivo on adult zebrafish. The results obtained in the phytochemical prospection evidenced the presence of flobabenic tannins, leucoanthocyanidins, flavonois, flavonones, catechins, alkaloids, steroids, and triterpenoids. EEFZJ did not show antibacterial activity for all microorganism tested (MIC ≥ 1024 µg/mL), but reduced the concentration required for bacterial growth inhibition in combination with gentamicin and norfloxacin against multidrug-resistant strains of S. aureus (SA10) and E. coli (EC06), exhibiting synergistic effect with these antibiotics (p<0.0001). In the tests in vivo, EEFZJ was found to be nontoxic, performing reduced locomotor activity and demonstrated an anxiolytic-like effect in adult zebrafish via GABAergic and Serotoninergic systems (5-HT1, 5-HT2A/2C and 5-HT3A/3B).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-edematogenic activity of X. americana L. (HEXA) hydroethanolic extract in ear edema models (acute and chronic) induced by croton oil and by different phlogistic agents (arachidonic acid, capsaicin, phenol and histamine), identifying the possible anti-edematogenic mechanism. HEXA demonstrated a significant anti-edematogenic effect at concentrations of 100-500 µg/ear in ear edema induced by croton oil with higher inhibition of edema of 39.37. However, the concentrations of 100 and 200 µg/ear were taken as a standard, demonstrating the effect in the chronic model induced by croton oil with inhibition of 61.62% and 48.74%. In the AA-induced ear edema model, HEXA showed inhibition of: 24.45% and 32.31%; capsaicin inhibition of 72.72% and 47.57%; phenol inhibition of 34% and 20.1%; and histamine inhibition of 31.8% and 21.62%. Then, the results were showed that HEXA demonstrated an anti-edematogenic effect in acute and chronic inflammation models, demonstrating a probable mechanism of action by the inhibition or modulation of key mediators of the inflammatory process. The chemical profile and presence of flavonoids guaranteeing a profile of activity similar to natural drugs that act or modulate the production of mediators of inflammations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vanillosmopsis arborea Baker (Asteraceae) has high economic value and anti-inflammatory properties due the presence of alpha bisabololin its bark essential oil. Keeping in view the highcontent of ?-bisabolol in Vanillosmopsis arborea (EOVA) bark essential oil, the aim of our study was to determinewhether EOVA mitigates visceral nociception induced bydifferent noxious gents.METHOD: Mice (n = 8) were pretreated orally with EOVA (100, 200 e 400 mg/kg) or vehicle, and pain-related behavioral responses to intraperitoneal cyclophosphamide (CPM 400 mg/kg), intracolonic mustard oil (MO0.75%) or capsaicin (CAP 0.3%) were analyzed.RESULTS: Animals that received CFM, OM or CAP presented spontaneous nociceptive behaviors that were signifi cantly suppressed by EOVA. CONCLUSION: These fi ndings point to visceral antinociceptive properties of EOVA suggesting the potential use of Vanillosmopsis arborea to treat pain associated to gastrointestinal disorders


JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: Vanillosmopsis arborea Baker (Asteraceae) de reconhecido valor econômico que possui propriedades anti-inflamatórias provenientes do sesquiterpeno alfa-bisabolol, presente em teores elevados no óleo essencial de sua madeira. Considerando-se o alto teor de ?-bisabolol no óleo essencialdo caule de Vanillosmopsis arborea (OEVA). O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o efeito do OEVA na nocicepção visceral induzida por diversos agentes irritantes.MÉTODO: Camundongos (n = 8) foram pré-tratados por via oral com EOVA (100, 200 e 400 mg/kg) ou veículo e as respostas comportamentais devido a administração de ciclofosfamida (CFM 400 mg/kg; por via intraperitoneal), óleo de mostarda (OM 0,75%; intracolônico) ou capsaicina (CAP 0,3%; intracolônica) foram registradas.RESULTADOS: Os animais que receberam CFM, OM ou CAP manifestaram comportamentos nociceptivos espontâneos que foram significativamente suprimidos nosgrupos tratados com OEVA.CONCLUSÃO: Estes achados apontam a propriedade antinociceptiva visceral do óleo essencial do caule de Vanillosmopsis arborea indicando o uso potencial no alívio da dor associada às desordens gastrintestinais.
