To conduct ex-situ creole pig conservation programs, it is essential to determine which breeding animals will be used, preferentially those with a more significant Iberian genetic component to preserve their origin. This study used a Yucatan black hairless pigs (YBHP) subpopulation to estimate its genetic diversity and population structure. One hundred four adult pigs were selected for the absence of hair, black skin (without spots), black hoof, and straight snout. The porcine-GGP-50K chip was used for SNP genotyping in YBHP, and information on Iberian and Yucatán hairless pigs from the United States (USYU) was taken from databases. All analysis was performed using PLINK v1.9 and v2.1 software. Inbreeding and fixation index values were lower in YBHP, with high observed heterozygosity and allogamy index values, which agree with those obtained in the populations of Canarias and Chato Murciano. According to the clusters generated by the "Genome-Wide Identity by State" analysis, four groups were identified, one of which included pigs from Guadyerbas, USYU, and YBHP. Between populations, YBHP was closely related to the hairless pigs from Guadyerbas, USYU, and Canarias. Principal component analysis showed the same result. According to the results obtained from the runs of homozygosity investigation, aimed to get pools consensus of regions of overlapping, 119 SNPs associated with genes and biological processes were identified. The BMP7 and NSUN2 genes were associated with epithelial cell differentiation, morphogenesis, and epithelial development. For nutrient metabolism: energy, the HADHA, PPARA, ADD1/SREBF1, and FAT 1genes were identified.(AU)


Para realizar programas de conservação ex-situ de suínos crioulos, é importante determinar quais animais serão criados, preferencialmente aqueles com maior componente de genética ibérica, para preservar sua origem. Uma subpopulação de porco preto calvo de Yucatán (YBHP) foi usada para estimar sua diversidade genética e estrutura populacional. Um total de 104 suínos adultos foram selecionados levando-se em consideração características como ausência de pelos, pele preta (sem manchas), casco preto e focinho reto. O painel GGP-50K foi utilizado para a genotipagem dos SNPs em animais YBHP, e informações de porcos sem pelos ibéricos e de Yucatán dos Estados Unidos (USYU) foram retiradas de bancos de dados. Todas as análises foram realizadas com o software PLINK v1.9 e v2.1. Os valores dos índices de endogamia e fixação foram menores em YBHP, com altos valores de índice de heterozigosidade e alogamia observados, que concordam com os obtidos nas populações de Canárias e Chato Murciano. De acordo com os clusters gerados pela análise "Genoma-Wide Identity By State", quatro grupos foram identificados, um dos quais incluiu porcos de Guadyerbas, USYU e YBHP. Entre as populações, YBHP estava intimamente relacionado com os porcos sem pelo de Guadyerbas, USYU e Canárias. A análise de componentes principais mostrou o mesmo resultado. De acordo com os resultados obtidos nas corridas de investigação de homozigose, visando obter consenso de pools de regiões de sobreposição, foram identificados 119 SNPs associados a genes e processos biológicos. Os genes BMP7 e NSUN2 foram associados à diferenciação de células epiteliais, morfogênese e desenvolvimento epitelial. Para metabolismo de nutrientes: energia, os genes HADHA, PPARA, ADD1/SREBF1 e FAT1 foram identificados.(AU)

The hereditary autosomal recessive disorders bovine citrullinemia (BC), bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD), factor XI deficiency (FXID), and complex vertebral malformation (CVM) have affected dairy cattle breeding significantly around the world. This study examined the carrier frequency of BC, BLAD, FXID, and CVM autosomal recessive disorders in Bos taurus Holstein cows bred in the Altos Norte region of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. We extracted DNA from 408 random samples of peripheral blood, and then used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify insertion mutations for FXID, and PCR with restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) for CVM, BC and BLAD. We visualized the PCR products using agarose gel electrophoresis stained with GelRed®. We found that 100% of wild-type (N/N) allele homozygous animals for genes CD18, ASS, and FXI were free of the mutations for BLAD, BC and FXID respectively. For gene SLC35A3 we estimated total carrier frequency of 10.3% and allele frequency of 5%.(AU)

Theileria equi infection prevalence was calculated from 1000 blood samples obtained from apparently healthy horses in western Mexico. Samples were sent to the Animal Biotechnology Laboratory of the University of Guadalajara (Mexico) for T. equi diagnosis. Nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) was used as a diagnostic method to detect pathogen DNA. Using primers for the merozoite antigen-1 (EMA-1) gene, 19.70±2.47% of the horses (95% CI, 17.23-22.17%) tested positive for T. equi. There was no significant association between gender and T. equi infection. However, prevalence was higher among stabled horses (25.81%) than that among grazing horses (15.02%). The positivity rate was also higher among Quarter Horse (24.70%), Lusitano (35.90%), and Costa Rican Saddle Horse (47.37%) breeds than that among the other seven breeds investigated in this study. The percentage of T. equi infection was higher among adult horses (≥ 4years old, 25.05%) than that among colts and fillies (2-4years old, 15.48%), yearlings (1-2years old, 10.49%), and foals (<1year old, 10.34%). This is the first study of T. equi infection prevalence among horses in Mexico by nPCR . The results indicate that the equine piroplasmosis (EP) caused by T. equi is enzootic in western Mexico.

This study was conducted to analyze the impact of dietary avocado on the oxidative stability of lipids and proteins during pork processing. Loins from control (fed basic diet) and treated pigs (fed on avocado-supplemented diet) were roasted (102 °C/20 min) and subsequently packed in trays wrapped with oxygen-permeable films and chilled at 4 °C for 12 days. At each processing stage (raw, cooked and cooked & chilled), pork samples from both groups were analyzed for the concentration of TBARS, the loss of tryptophan and free thiols, and the formation of protein carbonyls, disulphide bonds and Schiff bases. Processing led to a depletion of tryptophan and sulfur-containing amino acids and an increase of lipid and protein oxidation products. Dietary avocado was not able to protect against the oxidation of tryptophan and thiols but cooked & chilled loins from treated pigs had significantly lower concentration of lipid and protein carbonyls than control counterparts. Likewise, dietary avocado alleviated the formation of Schiff bases during cooking. These results illustrate the benefits of dietary avocado on the oxidative stability of processed pork loins.

The utilization of agricultural waste materials for pig feeding may be an interesting option for reducing production costs and contributing to sustainability and environmental welfare. In the present study, a mixed diet enriched with avocado waste (TREATED) is used for finishing industrial genotype pigs. The muscle longissimus thoracis et lomborum (LTL) from TREATED pigs was analyzed for composition and oxidative and color stability and compared with muscles obtained from pigs fed a CONTROL diet. Dietary avocado had significant impact on the content and composition of intramuscular fat (IMF), reducing the lipid content in LTL muscles and increasing the degree of unsaturation. This did not increase the oxidative instability of samples. On the contrary, muscles from TREATED pigs had significantly lower lipid and protein oxidation rates during chilled storage. The color of the muscles from TREATED pigs was also preserved from oxidation.

Current globalization policies demand animal welfare standards on animal transportation. In spite of international tendencies to commercialize meat cuts while decreasing live animal transit, transport is still one of the major problems in terms of animal welfare, besides carcass and meat by-products' quality. The present review analyzes, in general terms, the different definitions on animal welfare and factors affecting pig welfare in transit. Several case studies are referred to as examples, showing the animal response to stress during transport and its effects on both meat quality and the economic impact. In addition, legal requirements and Mexican regulations for pig transportation are also described. Information in regard to swine stress and welfare in transit, considers a number of factors that alter the animal metabolic homeostasis with subsequent negative effects on pork quality. It is conclude that knowledge on basic animal behavioral and physiological needs during transport, as well as a suitable training of personnel, are necessary for reducing animal welfare problems. Last but not least, some recommendations on handling practices are given in order to improve swine welfare during transit.


En el marco actual de la globalización, hablar de transporte animal conlleva realizar prácticas que mejoren el bienestar animal, aunque existe la tendencia mundial de incrementar el mercado de la carne en cortes, así como disminuir el comercio de animales vivos, el transporte constituye uno de los factores más preocupantes en términos del bienestar animal, además del impacto en la calidad de la canal y los subproductos respectivos. En la presente revisión se analizan, en términos generales, las distintas definiciones de bienestar animal, así como los factores más importantes que alteran el bienestar de los cerdos durante el transporte; se describen los requisitos legales y la normatividad mexicana para el transporte de animales, así como varios estudios de la respuesta fisiológica del animal durante condiciones adversas del transporte, se señalan, además, las repercusiones sobre la calidad de la carne y su impacto económico. La información con respecto al estrés de los cerdos y su bienestar durante el transporte, considera numerosos factores que alteran el equilibrio homeostático animal y que propician efectos negativos sobre calidad de la carne. Se concluye que tanto el conocimiento de la biología de la especie, como un entrenamiento del personal, son necesarios para disminuir los problemas de bienestar. Finalmente, se recomiendan algunas prácticas derivadas de los hallazgos presentados, con el fin de que se mejore el bienestar de los cerdos en tránsito.

Samples of semen from 12 pigs, three from Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc and Mexican Hairless each where obtained to study cryopreservation methods. Three stages of boar semen cryopreservation were evaluated: none (fresh stage), cooling at 5 degrees C and freezing at -196 degrees C then thawing to 56 degrees C for 12 sec. Perinuclear theca damage and domain alterations were selected as indices of seminal quality, as measured by electronic and fluorescence microcopy, respectively according to two lineal models considering by separately the effect of semen preservation and breed. Integrity and absence of perinuclear theca significantly (p < 0.001) decreased and increased, respectively according to a decrease in temperature of cryopreservation, from 87.4 to 58.8% and from 0.8 to 26.2%, respectively. This same significant (p < 0.001) effect was found for acrosomal and post-acrosomal membrane distribution of domains, from 92.1 to 76.8% and from 3.1 to 13.1% in this same order. Slight but highly significant (p < 0.001) differences were observed when theca integrity was evaluated as affected by breed, with highest and lowest values for Yorkshire and Pel6n Mexicano pigs, respectively. No breed effect was encountered for presence of acrosomal domains. A strong interdependence was found between perinuclear theca damage and domain distribution. In this connection, a highly significant (p < 0.001) positive, interdependence was observed between the theca damage and acrosomal domain (r = 0.87), while this same relationship was although highly significant (p < 0.001), negative in nature for equatorial and post-acrosonal domains (r = -0.77 and -0.85, respectively). This experiment confirmed that cryopreservation methods may severely affect semen quality of pigs and that genotype may further influence these same indices. More research is needed for improving methods of preservation of pig semen quality, from the point of view of perinuclear theca and domain characteristics of spermatozoa.

Se estudiaron genes candidatos para tamaño de la camada en 300 hembras porcinas Yorkshire-Landrace; ESR, PRLR, RBP4 y FUT1. Las hembras fueron agrupadas en dos niveles de producción (NP): nivel alto (NA) y nivel bajo (NB). Utilizando Ji cuadrado se analizaron las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas. Empleando análisis de varianza con un modelo de efectos mixtos, para lechones nacidos totales (LNT), nacidos vivos (LNV), peso de la camada al nacimiento (PNAC) y destete (PAJ21), lechones destetados (LD) y valor de cría de la progenie de la cerda (BVSP), se compararon las medias con contrastes ortogonales. Las hembras con alta productividad se asociaron con una mayor frecuencia del alelo B del gen ESR (P < 0,05). Las diferencias fueron de 0,4 LNV, 0,3 LD, 2,9 Kg de PAJ21 y 8,6 puntos de BVSP a favor del genotipo AB del gen ESR (P < 0,05) sin considerar el NP, no se detectaron animales homocigotos BB. Las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas del gen PRLR no se relacionaron con el NP (P > 0,05), no hubo diferencias (P > 0,05) entre los genotipos AA, AB y BB sin considerar el NP ni dentro del mismo NP. En el gen RBP4 la frecuencia del alelo A y del genotipo AA fue más alta en hembras con NA (P < 0,05), no se detectaron animales con genotipo BB. Las hembras con genotipos AA tuvieron más 0,5 LNT; 0,5 LNV; 0,6 Kg de PNAC; 2,6 Kg de PAJ21 y 3,2 puntos de BVSP que el genotipo AB (P < 0,05), sin considerar el NP. La frecuencia del alelo G y del genotipo GG del gen FUT1 fue mayor en el nivel de productividad alto (P < 0,05). El genotipo GG fue superior al genotipo AG con más 0,6 LNV; 0,8 Kg de PNAC; 3 Kg de PAJ21 y 3,9 puntos de BVSP (P < 0,05) sin considerar el NP.


Candidate genes were studied for litter size in 300 sows Yorkshire-Landrace; ESR, PRLR, RBP4 y FUT1. The sows were grouped in two levels of production (LP): high level (HL) and low level (LL). Using Chi-Square test the alleles and genotypic frequencies were analyzed. Employing analysis of variance with an mixed model effects for the total number born (TNB), number of piglets born alive (NBA), number of piglets alive at weaning (NW), total weight of piglets born (WTNB), total weight of piglets alive at weaning (WNW) and breeding value sow productivity (BVSP). The means were compared by orthogonal contrasts. The sows with high production were associated with a higher frequency of B allele of ESR gene (P < 0.05). The differences were of 0.04 NBA, 0.3 NW, 2.9 WNW kg and 8.6 BVSP points to favor of AB genotype of ESR gene (P < 0.05) without considering the LP and no homozygous BB animal was detected. The alleles and genotypic frequencies of PRLR gene were not related with the LP (P > 0.05), did not have differences (P > 0.05) between the genotypes AA, AB and BB without considering the LP, neither within of same LP. In the RBP4 gene the frequency of A allele and the AA genotype was higher in sows with HL (P < 0.05), no homozygous BB animals were detected. The sows with AA genotype had 0.5 TNB, 0.5 NBA, 0.6 WTNB kg, 2.6 WNW kg and 3.2 BVSP points more than sows with AB genotype (P < 0.05), without considering the LP. The frequency of G allele and GG genotype of FUT1 gene was higher in the HL (P < 0.05). The GG genotype was higher than AG genotype with 0.6 TNB, 0.8 WTNB kg, 3.0 WNW kg and 3.9 BVSP points more (P < 0.05), without considering the LP.
