The rarity of foot and ankle tumours, together with the numerous histological entities, presents a challenge in accumulating sufficient patients to draw reliable conclusions. Therefore, we decided to present an update of a retrospective analysis of their distribution patterns, comprising 536 cases of foot and ankle tumours presented to our tumour board between June 1997 and June 2023. Our aim was to provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence and distribution patterns of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours of the foot and ankle. A total of 277 tumours involved bone (51.7%). Of these, 242 (87.4%) were benign and 35 (12.6%) were malignant. In addition, 259 soft tissue tumours (48.3%) were found, of which 191 (73.7%) were benign and 68 (26.3%) were malignant. The most common benign bone tumours were simple bone cysts, enchondromas, osteochondromas, aneurysmal bone cysts, and lipomas of bone. Common benign soft tissue tumours included a tenosynovial giant cell tumour, haemangioma, plantar fibromatosis, schwannoma, and lipoma. The most common malignant soft tissue tumours were synovial sarcoma, malignant melanoma, and myxofibrosarcoma. In terms of anatomical location, the hindfoot was the most common site (28.7%), followed by the midfoot (25.9%), ankle (25.4%), and forefoot (20.0%). The distribution of benign entities often follows typical patterns, which may facilitate an early diagnosis even without biopsy (e.g., simple bone cyst, plantar fibromatosis). On the other hand, the distribution patterns of many rare or malignant entities are inconsistent. Individual soft tissue malignancies occur very sporadically, even over long periods of time and in specialized tumour centres. It is therefore important to recognise that any suspicious mass in the foot and ankle must be considered a possible malignancy until proven otherwise.

Simple bone cysts (SBCs) and intraosseous lipoma (IOL) of the calcaneus are rare tumor entities that are primarily diagnosed due to unspecific heel pain, incidental findings, or rarely due to pathological fractures. Compared to traditional open tumor resections, endoscopic resection of these benign tumors aims to minimize surgical morbidity and maximize surgical efficiency without compromising safety. Grafting is regularly performed to reduce the risk of recurrence and stimulate osseous consolidation of the lytic lesion. As the incidence is low and treatment strategies are heterogeneous, there is no clear consensus for the treatment of simple cysts or intraosseous lipomas of the calcaneus. The objectives of this study are (a) to present medium to long-term results after endoscopic resection and grafting with allogenic cancellous bone or bioresorbable hydroxyapatite and calcium sulfate cement, and (b) to add further evidence to the discussion of whether calcaneal SBC and IOL are the same entity at different developmental stages. Between 2012 and 2019, a total of 25 benign bone tumors consisting of 17 SBCs and 8 IOLs were treated by A.T. with endoscopic resection and grafting, comprising the largest cohort to date. For grafting, 12 patients received allogenic cancellous bone (group A) and 13 patients received injectable bone substitute (group B). Pre- and postoperative imaging using plain X-rays and MRI was retrospectively analyzed with a mean follow-up time of 24.5 months to assess tumor size, osseous consolidation (modified Neer classification), and tumor recurrence. A retrospective chart analysis focusing on adverse intra- and perioperative events and other complications associated with the surgical procedure was performed using the modified Clavien-Dindo classification (CD1-3). A total of 12/13 cases with allogenic bone grafting showed a Neer Type 1 osseous healing of the tumorous lesion after endoscopic resection, whereas only 5/11 cases with injectable bone substitute showed sufficient healing (types 1 and 2). There were three recurrent cysts (Neer 4) and two persistent cysts (Neer 3) after using injectable bone substitute. Two CD1 complications were observed in group A (prolonged wound drainage, sural neuritis) and eight complications were observed in group B (6× CD1, 2× CD3). At least two IOLs diagnosed preoperatively using MRI were ultimately identified as SBCs upon histopathologic examination. Allogenic cancellous bone grafting after endoscopic resection of calcaneal SBC or IOL showed a very low rate of complications and no tumor recurrence in our series. On the other hand, depending on the material used, injectable bone substitute showed a high rate of "white-out" (excessive drainage), resulting in multiple complications such as prolonged wound healing, insufficient permanent defect filling, recurrence, and revision surgery. Over time, calcaneal SBC may transform into IOL, exhibiting distinct features of both entities simultaneously during ossoscopy and histopathological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Modified Lapidus arthrodesis (MLA) is a well-established treatment option for symptomatic hallux valgus deformity (HVD). However, recurrence of the deformity remains a concern. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of an additional intermetatarsal fusion on the radiographic recurrence rate after first tarsometatarsal (TMT-I) arthrodesis. METHODS: This is a retrospective evaluation of 56 feet that underwent TMT-I arthrodesis for moderate to severe HVD. Twenty-three feet received an isolated arthrodesis of the TMT-I joint (TMT-I), whereas 33 feet received an additional fusion between the base of the first and the second metatarsal bone (TMT-I/II). Various radiological parameters were determined preoperatively, 6 weeks and at a mean of 2 years postoperatively. RESULTS: The intermetatarsal angle (IMA) and the hallux valgus angle (HVA) were significantly lowered at both follow-up evaluations in both groups. In the TMT-I/II group, the initial reduction of HVA was significantly higher (29.3° vs 21.1°). This difference disappeared by the second follow-up, leaving no significant differences between both techniques at final follow-up. Radiological recurrence rates of HVD were comparable in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Isolated TMT-I arthrodesis provides reliable radiological results in the correction of HVD. Whether additional fusion of the first and second metatarsal base should be routinely performed remains unclear. LEVELS OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of the study was to analyze operative time and restoration of hip biomechanics in total hip arthroplasty (THA) via direct anterior approach (DAA) with and without the use of a traction table. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively compared 97 cases where a traction table was used to 92 cases without a table. Ninety-seven patients received THA with a traction table (AMIS® technique) and 92 patients with conventional DAA. Postoperative standard radiographs were used to analyze offset parameters and leg length. Furthermore, time for patient positioning and cut-to-suture time were evaluated. RESULTS: Cut-to-suture time was statistically significantly shorter in the traction table group (p=0.001), whereas analysis of offset parameters (acetabular, femoral and combined) was comparable between the two groups (p=0.31, p=0.95, p=0.42). Postoperative leg length was statistically significantly different with and without traction table use (p=0.02). CONCLUSION: Both methods enable restoration of hip biomechanics with high accuracy. Further studies with prospective study designs and larger sample sizes may be needed to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND: The Covid-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education in history. In a response to this, we aimed to evaluate the knee arthroscopy learning curve among medical students and orthopaedic residents. METHODS: An arthroscopy simulator was used to compare the learning curves of two groups. Medical students with any prior knowledge of arthroscopy (n=24) were compared to a residents group (n=16). Analyzed parameters were "time to complete a task," assessment of the movement of tools and values scoring damage to the surrounding tissues. RESULTS: After several repetitions, both groups improved their skills in terms of time and movement. Residents were on average faster, had less camera movement, and touched the cartilage tissue less often than did students. Students showed a steeper improvement curve than residents for certain parameters, as they started from a different experience level. CONCLUSION: The participants were able to reduce the time to complete a task. There was also a decrease in possible damage to the virtual surrounding tissues. In general, the residents had better mean values, but the students had the steeper learning curve. Particularly less experienced surgeons can especially train their hand-eye coordination skills required for arthroscopy surgery. Training simulators are an important training tool that supplements cadaveric training and participation in arthroscopic operations and should be included in training.

PURPOSE: Arthroscopic lateral retinacular release (LRR) has long been considered the gold standard for the treatment for anterior knee pain caused by lateral retinacular tightness (LRT). However, one-third of patients experience continuous pain postoperatively, which is thought to be related to persistent maltracking of the patella and altered femoro-tibial kinematics. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to simultaneously assess femoro-tibial and patello-femoral kinematics and identify the influence of arthroscopic LRR. METHODS: Sixteen healthy volunteers and 12 patients with unilateral, isolated LRT were prospectively included. Open MRI scans with and without isometric quadriceps contraction were performed in 0°, 30° and 90° of knee flexion preoperatively and at 12 months after surgery. Patellar shift, tilt angle, patello-femoral contact area and magnitude of femoro-tibial rotation were calculated by digital image processing. RESULTS: Postoperatively, patellar shift was significantly reduced at 90° of knee flexion compared to preoperative values. The postoperative patellar tilt angle was found to be significantly smaller at 30° of knee flexion compared to that preoperatively. Isometric muscle contractions did not considerably influence patellar shift or tilt in either group. The patello-femoral contact area increased after LRR over the full range of motion (ROM), with significant changes at 0° and 90°. Regarding femoro-tibial kinematics, significantly increased femoral internal rotation at 0° was observed in the patient group preoperatively, whereas the magnitude of rotation at 90° of knee flexion was comparable to that of healthy individuals. The pathologically increased femoral internal rotation at 30° without muscular activity could be significantly decreased by LRR. With isometric quadriceps contraction no considerable improvement of femoral internal rotation could be achieved by LRR at 30° of knee flexion. CONCLUSIONS: Patello-femoral and femoro-tibial joint kinematics could be improved, making LRR a viable surgical option in carefully selected patients with isolated LRT. However, pathologically increased femoral internal rotation during early knee flexion remained unaffected by LRR and thus potentially accounts for persistent pain. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II.

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is among the most common differential diagnoses of total knee arthroplasty failure. It is a challenging complication, not least because of the difficulty of establishing the correct diagnosis. The fact that no single diagnostic parameter or test has been identified that can accurately rule in or out PJI has led to an evolution of similar but competing definitions of PJI on the grounds of an array of criteria. This development has had very positive effects on the scientific evaluation of various methods of PJI diagnostics and treatment because of an increased comparability. However, it can be challenging to stay abreast of the evidence these definitions are based on. Also, the definitions alone do not necessarily entail an algorithm to aid in evaluating the right criteria in a sound order to be able to use the definitions as a sensible tool. The aim of this overview is to state the most recent evidence on the diagnostic parameters included in the most established PJI definitions and to exhibit and compare the few algorithmic approaches published. Clinical symptoms of PJI are very rarely reported on in the literature, hence the evidence on their diagnostic value is poor. The only symptom that is part of the established PJI definitions is the presence of a fistula. Concerning serological markers, CRP and ESR are still the common denominator in the literature, most recently accompanied by D-Dimer as a potentially suitable marker that has been included in the most recent update of the International Consensus Meeting (ICM) criteria. Imaging plays a minor role in the diagnostic cascade because of inconsistent evidence, and no role whatsoever in the established definitions. The most important preoperative diagnostic measure is arthrocentesis and cultural and cytological analysis of the synovial fluid. The much acclaimed α-Defensin test has so far not been included in the established criteria due to inconsistent reports on its diagnostic accuracy, it is, however, in wide use and considered an optional diagnostic tool for inconclusive cases. The most diagnostic accuracy lies in the cultural and histological analysis of periprosthetic tissue biopsies, whether they are gathered in a small procedure or during arthroplasty revision. Published algorithmic approaches to PJI diagnosis are much rarer than the well-established definitions by various associations. With their PJI definition, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) published a consensus based flowchart for PJI diagnosis. Another algorithm was proposed as part of the endeavor of the MSIS and the first consensus meeting, also based on a consensus among experts. There have been two more recent publications of flowcharts based on the current evidence, one introduced at our institution in 2013, one established in 2020 by the German Society for Arthroplasty (AE).

BACKGROUND/AIM: Surgical resection for soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) is the gold standard for a curative oncologic therapy in combination with neoadjuvant or adjuvant radiation therapy (NRT/ART). The aim of this study was to determine prognostic factors influencing the survival of patients with STS undergoing NRT or ART considering various parameters in a retrospective, single-centre analysis over 15 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 119 patients (male 59) and the median follow-up period was 69 months (4-197). The patients received NRT (n=64) or ART (n=55). We recorded the histopathologic subtype of STS, tumour grade, localization, tumour margins, complications, survival, local recurrence, and metastases. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: The overall survival rate was 68.9% at 5 years. The localization (epifascial/subfascial), resection margin and type of radiation therapy (NRT/ART) had no significant impact on survival. Tumour grade, tumour size, local recurrence and metastases were significantly correlated with patient survival (p<0.05). Local recurrence was significantly higher in patients with ART (p=0.044). CONCLUSION: Tumour grade and tumour size were independently associated with disease-specific survival, and patients with local recurrence and metastases had lower survival rates.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is characterized by an infiltrative growth pattern. This study aimed to determine the correlation between overall survival (OS) and morphological features of MFS as well as examine the reproducibility of these findings on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight MFS patients underwent preoperative MR imaging with the following features analysed: i) tumour size, ii) localization, iii) margins, iv) morphology, v) signal characteristics, vi) contrast enhancement, vii) presence and extent of perilesional oedema, and viii) presence of the tail sign. RESULTS: Only circumscribed perilesional oedema was associated with a significantly better survival compared to diffuse oedema (p=0.010), which was found in the majority of cases. The tail sign was found in less than 50% of the cases. Cohen's kappa coefficients confirmed a relatively high interrater variability. CONCLUSION: Perilesional diffuse oedema on MR imaging of MFS is significantly correlated with a poor overall survival. The interrater variability in interpretation of MR examinations varies from slight to substantial agreement. Preoperative MR imaging with detailed planning of the resection seem to be a logical approach to achieve negative resection margins and recurrence-free survival.

BACKGROUND: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) offers good long-term survivorship and superior kinematics and function compared with total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, revision rates are higher with aseptic loosening representing a major cause. Biomechanical stability depends on cement penetration. The goal of this study was to analyze the influence of cement morphology and bone density on primary stability of tibial UKA under physiological loading conditions in human tibiae. METHODS: Thirty-six tibial trays were implanted in fresh-frozen human cadaver knees and tested for primary stability using dynamic compression-shear testing. Prior to implantation, bone density had been quantified for all 18 tibiae. Postoperatively, cement penetration has been assessed on frontal cuts based on eight predefined parameters. The influence of bone density and cement morphology on biomechanical stability was determined using correlation and linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Mean failure load was 2691 ± 832.9 N, mean total cement thickness was 2.04 ± 0.37 mm, mean cement penetration was 1.54 ± 0.33 mm and mean trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) was 107.1 ± 29.3 mg/ml. There was no significant correlation between failure load and cement morphology (P > .05). Failure load was significantly positive correlated with trabecular BMD (r = 0.843; P < .0001) and cortical BMD (r = 0.432; P = .0136). CONCLUSIONS: Simulating physiological loading conditions, the failure load of tibial UKA is linearly dependent on the trabecular BMD. The observed parameters of cementation morphology seem capable of preventing failure at the bone-cement interface before inherent bone stability is reached. Further research is required to assess the usefulness of a preoperative assessment of bone quality for patient selection in UKA.

BACKGROUND: Patients with sarcoma are particularly vulnerable to psychosocial distress. The aim of this study was to collect preliminary data on the prevalence of psychosocial distress in such patients during follow-up care and identify risk factors associated with higher psycho-oncological stress levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively enrolled 202 patients with bone or soft-tissue sarcomas who underwent routine psychosocial distress screening during their follow-up care. All patients were screened using an electronic cancer-specific questionnaire. RESULTS: Females and patients who underwent radiotherapy were more distressed. Psychosocial distress levels were markedly higher in the early postoperative phase, but approximately one-third of patients showed high psychosocial distress levels even more than 2 years postoperatively. CONCLUSION: The results underscore the importance of routine psychosocial distress screenings in patients with sarcoma, which should be performed throughout the follow-up period.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze survivorship and functional outcome of cementless spongy metal structured total hip arthroplasty (THA) after ultra-long-term follow-up. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 100 THAs in patients under 65 years at initial surgery were performed between 1985 and 1989 at our Department. Twenty patients (23 hips) were available for final follow-up. Implant survivorship and functional results (Merle d'Aubigné, SF-12) were assessed. RESULTS: At a mean follow-up of 30 years (range=27.7-31.7 years), the overall stem survival rate was 82.6% (19/23 stems) and the overall cup survival rate was 52.2% (12/23 cups). Revision surgeries were performed for aseptic loosening in all cases. Functional evaluation revealed good to excellent results in 16 patients (80%) Conclusion: Spongy metal structured cementless THA provides remarkable survivorship and excellent functional results even after ultra-long-term follow-up. Further research regarding modern implants, bearing surfaces etc. is required to assess survivorship and clinical outcomes of different implant designs.

Osteoblasts are adherent cells, and under physiological conditions they attach to both mineralized and non-mineralized osseous surfaces. However, how exactly osteoblasts respond to these different osseous surfaces is largely unknown. Our hypothesis was that the state of matrix mineralization provides a functional signal to osteoblasts. To assess the osteoblast response to mineralized compared to demineralized osseous surfaces, we developed and validated a novel tissue surface model. We demonstrated that with the exception of the absence of mineral, the mineralized and demineralized surfaces were similar in molecular composition as determined, for example, by collagen content and maturity. Subsequently, we used the human osteoblastic cell line MG63 in combination with genome-wide gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to record and compare the gene expression signatures on mineralized and demineralized surfaces. Assessment of the 5 most significant gene sets showed on mineralized surfaces an enrichment exclusively of genes sets linked to protein synthesis, while on the demineralized surfaces 3 of the 5 enriched gene sets were associated with the matrix. Focusing on these three gene sets, we observed not only the expected structural components of the bone matrix, but also gene products, such as HMCN1 or NID2, that are likely to act as temporal migration guides. Together, these findings suggest that in osteoblasts mineralized and demineralized osseous surfaces favor intracellular protein production and matrix formation, respectively. Further, they demonstrate that the mineralization state of bone independently controls gene expression in osteoblastic cells.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Psycho-oncological distress is a relevant clinical problem. The aim of this study was to administer a standardized psycho-oncological distress screening for early identification and indication-based treatment of highly distressed orthopedic cancer patients as well as the evaluation of distress patterns. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 35 patients with cancer were psycho-oncologically screened using a cancer-specific expert rating scale (Basic Documentation for Psycho-Oncology Short Form) at three different time points (day of admission, day before discharge, 3 months postoperatively). Psycho-oncological support was offered to all patients whose distress exceeded a defined cut-off value. RESULTS: Levels of distress in approximately 51% of patients exceeded the cut-off value at the time of admission and these patients received psycho-oncological support. The high distress levels decreased significantly over time. Patients whose distress did not exceed the cut-off value at the first assessment showed low distress levels at all time points. CONCLUSION: A relevant number of orthopedic tumor patients suffer from psychosocial distress. Standardized screening might help to identify and adequately treat those patients.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains a serious complication of total joint arthroplasty. To effectively treat PJI, it is essential to identify the microorganism causing it and be able to combine correct surgical and anti-infective treatments. This cannot always be achieved with the currently employed diagnostic methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate a semi-automated tissue biopsy bead milling method (Ultra-TurrAX, Axonlab AG; Reichenbach, Germany) based on the hypothesis that the results are more sensitive for microbe detection and less prone to contamination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 35 consecutive patients undergoing 38 hip or knee arthroplasty revisions in this study. In addition to manually processed biopsies, we processed tissue specimens harvested intraoperatively using a semi-automated method. The sensitivity and specificity of both methods were calculated using MSIS criteria and sonication results as gold standards. RESULTS: For total hip arthroplasty samples were evaluated separately based on MSIS criteria as the reference standard, Ultra-TurrAX processing yielded 81% (62-100%) sensitivity and 100% specificity. Using sonication as the gold standard, a sensitivity of 80% (60-100%) and specificity of 80% (45-100%) were calculated. In total knee arthroplasty, Ultra-TurrAX processing yielded 27% (1-54%) sensitivity and 57% (20-94%) specificity when using MSIS criteria as the gold standard. Using sonication as the gold standard, a sensitivity of 60% (17-100%) and specificity of 77% (54-100%) were calculated. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to analyze bead mill processing in total hip and knee arthroplasty revisions in a consecutive patient series. The method's sensitivity was comparable to and its specificity superior to regular sample processing results reported in the literature with respect to hip arthroplasties and to both hip and knee arthroplasties collectively. With respect to total knee arthroplasties, the method fared worse in our collective, most likely due to the small number of patients in the sample. Integrating the method into the clinical workflow allowed for speedier and more efficient sample handling and processing. The theoretical advantage of a lower risk of contamination because of fewer manual processing steps is, in our opinion, valid.

The growing interest in engineered tumor models prompted us to devise a method for the non-invasive assessment of such models. Here, we report on bioluminescence imaging (BLI) for the assessment of engineered tumor models in the fertilized chicken egg, i.e, chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. One prostate cancer (PC-3) and two osteosarcoma (MG63 and HOS) cell lines were modified with luciferase reporter genes. To create engineered tumors, these cell lines were seeded either onto basement membrane extract (BME) or gelfoam scaffolds, and subsequently grafted in vivo onto the CAM. BLI enabled non-invasive, specific detection of the engineered tumors on the CAM in the living chicken embryo. Further, BLI permitted daily, quantitative monitoring of the engineered tumors over the course of up to 7 days. Data showed that an extracellular matrix (ECM) composed of BME supported growth of reporter gene marked PC-3 tumors but did not support MG63 or HOS tumor growth. However, MG63 tumors engineered on the collagen-based gelfoam ECM showed a temporal proliferation burst in MG63 tumors. Together, the data demonstrated imaging of engineered human cancer models in living chicken embryos. The combination of CAM assay and BLI holds significant potential for the examination of a broad range of engineered tumor models.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcomas are rare entities with over 50 histological subtypes. Liposarcoma (LS) is the most common neoplasm in this group; it is a complex neoplasm that is divided into different histological subtypes. Different therapy options, such as surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy, are available. Depending on the subtype, location, status of the resection margins and metastatic status, different therapy options are used. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prognostic factors influencing the survival of patients affected by LS with consideration for the grading, histological subtype, state of the resection margin, size, location, metastases and local recurrence in a retrospective, single-centre analysis over 15 years. METHODS: We included 133 patients (male/female = 67/66) in this study. We recorded the histologic subtype, grade, TNM classification, localization, biopsy technique, tumour margins, number of operations, complications, radiation and dose, chemotherapy, survival, recrudescence, metastases and follow-up. Survivorship analysis was performed. RESULTS: We detected 56 (43%; 95%-CI 34.6-51.6%) atypical LS cases, 21 (16.2%; 95%-CI 9.8-22.5) dedifferentiated LS cases, 40 (30.8%; 95%-CI 22.8-38.7) myxoid LS cases and 12 (9.2%; 95%-CI 4.3-14.2) pleomorphic LS cases. G1 was the most common grade, which was followed by G3. Negative margins (R0) were detected in 67 cases (53.6%; 95%-CI 44.9-62.3) after surgical resection. Local recurrence was detected in 23.6% of cases. The presence of metastases and dedifferentiated LS subtype as well as negative margins, grade and tumour size are significant prognostic factors of the survival rates (p < 0.015). CONCLUSION: Grading, LS subtype, negative margins after surgery, metastases and tumour size are independently associated with disease-specific survival, and patients with local recurrence had lower survival rates. We hope our investigation may facilitate a further prospective study and clinical decision-making in LS.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial distress can be frequently observed in patients with sarcoma, depicting a relevant clinical problem. However, prospective data collection on psychosocial distress in patients with rare tumors is often time-consuming. In this context, social media such as Facebook can serve as a potential platform to expand research. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of psychosocial distress screening in patients with osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma via social media. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study an online questionnaire including general information and self-assessment distress measurement tools for patients and parents was created. The link to the questionnaire was then posted on the main page of the two largest disease-specific Facebook communities on osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma. RESULTS: Within 2 months, 28 patients and 58 parents of patients were enrolled. All patients with osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma, as well as the majority of parental caregivers of such patients, showed relevant psychosocial distress levels. CONCLUSION: Crowdsourcing via disease-specific patient communities on Facebook is feasible and provides great potential for acquisition of medical data of rare diseases.
