Intracellular levels of glutathione, the major mammalian antioxidant, are reported to decline with age in several species. To understand whether ageing affects circulating glutathione levels in cats, blood was sampled from two age groups, < 3 years and > 9 years. Further, to determine whether dietary supplementation with glutathione precursor glycine (GLY) affects glutathione concentrations in senior cats (> 8 years), a series of free GLY inclusion level dry diets were fed. Subsequently, a 16-week GLY feeding study was conducted in senior cats (> 7 years), measuring glutathione, and markers of oxidative stress. Whole blood and erythrocyte total, oxidised and reduced glutathione levels were significantly decreased in senior cats, compared with their younger counterparts (P ≤ 0·02). The inclusion level study identified 1·5 % free GLY for the subsequent dry diet feeding study. Significant increases in erythrocyte total and reduced glutathione were observed between senior cats fed supplemented and control diets at 4 weeks (P ≤ 0·03; maximum difference of 1·23 µM). Oxidative stress markers were also significantly different between groups at 8 (P = 0·004; difference of 0·68 nG/ml in 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine) and 12 weeks (P ≤ 0·049; maximum difference of 0·62 nG/mG Cr in F2-isoprostane PGF2α). Senior cats have lower circulating glutathione levels compared with younger cats. Feeding senior cats a complete and balanced dry diet supplemented with 1·5 % free GLY for 12 weeks elevated initial erythrocyte glutathione and altered markers of oxidative stress. Dietary supplementation with free GLY provides a potential opportunity to restore age-associated reduction in glutathione in cats.

Our understanding of metabolic alterations triggered by heat stress is incomplete, which limits the designing of nutritional strategies to mitigate negative productive and health effects. Thus, this study aimed to explore the metabolic responses of heat-stressed dairy cows to dietary supplementation with vitamin D3/Ca and vitamin E/Se. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows were enrolled in a split-plot Latin square design with two distinct vitamin E/Se supplementation levels, either at a low (ESe-, n = 6, 11.1 IU/kg vitamin E and 0.55 mg/kg Se) or a high dose (ESe+, n = 6 223 IU/kg vitamin E and 1.8 mg/kg Se) as the main plot. Treatment subplots, arranged in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design, comprised heat challenge (Temperature Humidity Index, THI: 72.0-82.0) supplemented with different levels of vitamin D3/Ca: either low (HS/DCa-, 1 012 IU/kg and 0.73%, respectively) or high (HS/DCa+, 3 764 IU/kg and 0.97%, respectively), and a pair-fed control group in thermoneutrality (THI = 61.0-64.0) receiving the low dose of vitamin D3/Ca (TN). The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolome profile was determined in blood plasma and milk sampled at the beginning (day 0) and end (day 14) of each experimental period. The results were analyzed for the effect of (1) TN vs. HS/ESe-/DCa-, and (2) the vitamin E/Se and vitamin D3/Ca supplementation. No group or group × day effects were detected in the plasma metabolome (false discovery rate, FDR > 0.05), except for triglyceride 52:2 being higher (FDR = 0.03) on day 0 than 14. Taurine, creatinine and butyryl-carnitine showed group × day interactions in the milk metabolome (FDR ≤ 0.05) as creatinine (+22%) and butyryl-carnitine (+190%) were increased (P < 0.01) on day 14, and taurine was decreased (-65%, P < 0.01) on day 14 in the heat stress (HS) cows, compared with day 0. Most compounds were unaffected by vitamin E/Se or vitamin D3/Ca supplementation level or their interaction (FDR > 0.05) in plasma and milk, except for milk alanine which was lower (-69%, FDR = 0.03) in the E/Se+ groups, compared with E/Se-. Our results indicated that HS triggered more prominent changes in the milk than in the plasma metabolome, with consistent results in milk suggesting increased muscle catabolism, as reflected by increased creatinine, alanine and citrulline levels. Supplementing with high levels of vitamin E/Se or vitamin D3/Ca or their combination did not appear to affect the metabolic remodeling triggered by HS.

OBJECTIVE: Pro-inflammatory polarization of adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of obesity-associated chronic inflammation. However, little is known about the role of lipids in the regulation of ATMs polarity and inflammation in response to metabolic stress. Deletion of α/ß-hydrolase domain-containing 6 (ABHD6), a monoacylglycerol (MAG) hydrolase, has been shown to protect against diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. METHODS: Here we investigated the immunometabolic role of macrophage ABHD6 in response to nutrient excess using whole-body ABHD6-KO mice and human and murine macrophage cell-lines treated with KT203, a selective and potent pharmacological ABHD6 inhibitor. RESULTS: KO mice on high-fat diet showed lower susceptibility to systemic diet-induced inflammation. Moreover, in the setting of overnutrition, stromal vascular cells from gonadal fat of KO vs. control mice contained lower number of M1 macrophages and exhibited enhanced levels of metabolically activated macrophages (MMe) and M2 markers, oxygen consumption, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) release. Likewise, under in vitro nutri-stress condition, inhibition of ABHD6 in MMe-polarized macrophages attenuated the expression and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and M1 markers and induced the upregulation of lipid metabolism genes. ABHD6-inhibited MMe macrophages showed elevated levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and 2-MAG species. Notably, among different MAG species, only 2-MAG treatment led to increased levels of PPAR target genes in MMe macrophages. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our findings identify ABHD6 as a key component of pro-inflammatory macrophage activation in response to excess nutrition and implicate an endogenous macrophage lipolysis/ABHD6/2-MAG/PPARs cascade, as a lipid signaling and immunometabolic pathway, which favors the anti-inflammatory polarization of ATMs in obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Central venous catheter (CVC) placement is commonly performed in children. We aim to develop simple formulas to predict CVC intravascular length to minimise radiation exposure associated with the procedure. METHODS: 124 paediatric patients who received tunnelled neck CVCs and subsequent CT thorax at Hong Kong Children's Hospital from January 2020 to July 2022 were reviewed retrospectively. Formula development cohorts were subdivided by insertion sites-9 right external jugular vein (REJV), 41 right internal jugular vein (RIJV), 14 left external jugular vein (LEJV), 10 left internal jugular vein (LIJV). Using measurements from CT by two radiologists, formulas predicting the CVC intravascular length based on height and insertion sites were developed using a linear regression model. These formulas were tested with validation cohorts (10 randomly selected cases in REJV and RIJV groups respectively). Validation cohorts were not available for LEJV and LIJV groups due to small sample sizes. RESULT: The goodness-of-fit (R^2) of all formulas are above 0.8. In the validation cohorts, the REJV formula was predictive of intravascular CVC length within 1 cm in 70% of CVC with mean absolute difference of 0.63 cm (SD 0.48 cm), and the RIJV formula was predictive of intravascular CVC length within 1 cm in 80% of CVC with mean absolute difference of 0.67 cm (SD 0.53 cm). CONCLUSION: Intravascular CVC length can be estimated using simple formulas based on height and insertion sites. Further prospective validation of the LEJV and LIJV formulas is needed.

A high prevalence of malnutrition occurs in human hospitals and has been associated with detrimental consequences. By comparison, much less is known in hospitalized veterinary patients. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition and body composition changes in long-stay hospitalised patients using an isotopic dilution technique. An additional objective was to compare the changes in composition with commonly used methods measuring body fat and lean mass. The dogs consumed on average 77.5% of their estimated resting energy requirements during their stay. The majority (78.3%) of dogs lost body weight, of which a greater proportion was lean mass (61.8%) than fat mass (FM) (38.2%). There was a moderate correlation between body condition score and percentage FM measured at admission (Kendall's τ = 0.51; p = 0.002), and at discharge (Kendall's τ = 0.55; p = 0.001). However, there was no correlation between muscle condition score and fat-free mass at either admission or discharge (p > 0.1). Duration of stay was positively associated with loss of body weight (p < 0.001), but was not associated with changes in either lean or FM expressed as a percentage of body weight or in absolute terms (p > 0.1), which was presumed to be explained by small sample size and variation. Food intake was not found to a significant factor for lean or FM loss (p > 0.1). These findings indicate that weight loss is common in hospitalized canine patients, which is not explained by simple under-eating. Other factors such as inflammation and inactivity should be evaluated in future studies to determine their role in influencing muscle and FM changes in hospitalized canine patients.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine if epaxial muscle height (EMH) could be reliably incorporated into annual routine wellness screenings, and also determine its relationship to age, body condition score (BCS), subjective muscle assessment (SMA), breed and sex in mature cats. METHODS: EMH was determined independently by three observers from ultrasonographic examinations - collected by an additional trained individual - of cats enrolled at the Feline Healthy Ageing Clinic, University of Liverpool, UK. Age, body weight, BCS and SMA data were also collected. RESULTS: A total of 92 cats were included, 35 of which had repeat ultrasonographic examinations 12 months apart. Enrolled cats were a median age of 8 years and 9 months at the time of the first measurement. Variation in the quality of ultrasonographic images collected did not affect muscle depth measurements (P = 0.974). Further, there was good intra- and inter-observer repeatability for all observations (intraclass correlation range 0.97-0.99). There was a moderate positive association between EMH and body weight (r = 0.49, P <0.001) but no association with age (r = -0.05, P = 0.680). There were also positive associations in EMH among cats with different BCSs (P = 0.001) and SMAs (thoracic spine, P = 0.021; lumbar spine, P = 0.014), but breed (P = 0.429) and sex (P = 0.187) had no effect. Finally, there was no change in EMH measurements in the paired samples (P = 0.145) or correlation between percentage weight and EMH change over 12 months. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The accuracy of EMH measurement using ultrasonographic imaging is good, irrespective of observer experience and provided that the ultrasonographer has some training. This suggests that ultrasonographic measurement of EMH could have a major practical impact as a non-invasive determination of muscle mass in pet cat populations. Further research is required to assess longitudinal changes in muscle mass over time in senior pet cats.

Segmental mandibular advancement (SMA) consists of a combination of bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, anterior subapical osteotomy with extraction of the first premolars, and genioplasty, to allow an extended advancement of the mandible for the improvement of tongue base obstruction in moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and to minimize any unfavourable aesthetic change due to the large jaw advancement. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the surgical outcomes and complications following SMA in OSA patients. Twelve patients (nine male, three female) underwent SMA as part or whole of their skeletal advancement procedure for OSA. The apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) improved from a mean± standard deviation 42.4 ± 22.0/hour preoperatively to 9.0 ± 17.4/hour at 1 year postoperative. Surgical success (50% reduction in AHI) was achieved in 11 of the 12 patients (91.7%) at 1 year postoperative, while seven patients (58.3%) attained surgical cure (AHI<5/hour). The lowest oxygen saturation (LSAT) increased from a mean 73.3% preoperatively to 78.7% at 1 year postoperative. The airway volume increased from a mean 2.4 ± 1.7 cm3 at baseline to 6.7 ± 3.5 cm3 at 1 year postoperative (P < 0.001). No major complication occurred. This pilot study showed that SMA appears to be safe and effective as part or whole of the skeletal advancement surgery for moderate-to-severe OSA.

The aim of this study was to investigate the gingival thickness and biologic width in the aesthetic zone (maxillary central and lateral incisors) in an Asian population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a non-invasive measurement method, prior to immediate implant placement. The gingival geometric ratio is introduced as a new parameter for assessing soft tissue stability and hence predicting the aesthetic outcome. The gingival thickness, biologic width category (normal, high, and low crest), and gingival geometric ratio (shape and configuration of the gingival tissues) were assessed for 171 central and 175 lateral incisors on high-resolution CBCT images. Thick gingivae were found in 93.6% of the central incisors and 64% of the lateral incisors (P < 0.001). The difference in thickness between the central and lateral incisors was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Regarding the biologic width of the facial gingival tissue, the majority of central (64.8%) and lateral (64.3%) incisors were categorized as low crest (>3 mm). The study found that most of the gingivae of the maxillary central incisors were thick, while thin gingivae were more prevalent in the lateral incisors. Therefore, an individual patient may have different gingival thickness types, and 'one individual, one gingival biotype' may not be true. Furthermore, the majority of the facial gingival tissues of the maxillary incisors were found to be low crest.

OBJECTIVES: Studies reviewing orofacial mycoses in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection are sparse. Here we review the major oral and maxillofacial mycoses of COVID-19, the associated comorbidities, and the probable precipitating factors. METHODS: English-language manuscripts published between March 2020 and October 2021 were searched using PubMed, OVID, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases, using appropriate keywords. RESULTS: We identified 30 articles across 14 countries, which met the inclusion criteria of PRISMA guidelines. These yielded a total of 292 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, 51.4% (n = 150) of whom presented with oral and maxillofacial fungal infections, mainly comprising candidosis, mucormycosis, and aspergillosis. Candida infections were the most prevalent, present in 64% (n = 96), followed by mucormycosis, and only a single case of aspergillosis was noted. Oral and maxillofacial mycoses were predominantly seen in those with comorbidities, especially in those with diabetes (52.4%). Oral mucormycosis was noted in 8.6% (n = 13) and mainly manifested on the hard palate. An overall event rate of oral/maxillofacial mucormycosis manifestation in patients with COVID-19 with diabetes mellitus type 1/2 was about 94% (49/52; 95% confidence interval, 0.73%-0.89%), implying a very high association between diabetes mellitus and the latter condition. All fungal infections appeared either concurrently with COVID-19 symptoms or during the immediate recovery period. CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2 infection-related immunosuppression, steroid therapy, as well as comorbidities such as diabetic hyperglycemia appear to be the major predisposing factors for the onset of oral and maxillofacial mycoses in patients with COVID-19 across all age groups.

A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the stability and complications of Le Fort I osteotomy with segmentation for the treatment of bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion. A total of 120 consecutive patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery between 2008 and 2017 at a single centre were recruited. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken before surgery, within 6 weeks after surgery, and at 2 years after surgery. U1-SN and U1-PP underwent mean uprighting of 8.7° and 9.6°, respectively, and mean relapse of 2.1° and 2.6°, respectively (both P < 0.05). The only significant risk factor for relapse was the use of intermaxillary fixation (risk ratio (RR) 1.2, P = 0.01). The most common complication was wound dehiscence (41.7%), which was a significant risk factor for wound infection (RR 3.3, P < 0.01) and fixation hardware exposure (RR 3.7, P < 0.01). Other common complications were gingival recession (40.8%), periodontal bone loss (40%), and blood loss requiring transfusion (26.7%), the latter of which was associated with the preoperative diagnosis of vertical maxillary excess (RR 2.4, P = 0.01). Some degree of relapse occurred in more than 90% of the patients by 2 years after surgery. The procedure is not without risks and complications but may be useful in severe cases.

Human activities in Antarctica were increasing before the COVID-19 pandemic, and tourism was not an exception. The growth and diversification of Antarctic tourism over the last few decades have been extensively studied. However, environmental impacts associated with this activity have received less attention despite an increasing body of scholarship examining environmental issues related to Antarctic tourism. Aside from raising important research questions, the potential negative effects of tourist visits in Antarctica are also an issue discussed by Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties. This study presents the results of a meta-analysis of scholarly publications that synthesizes and updates our current knowledge of environmental impacts resulting from Antarctic tourism. A first publication database containing 233 records that focussed on this topic was compiled and subjected to a general bibliometric and content analysis. Further, an in-depth content analysis was performed on a subset of 75 records, which were focussed on showing specific research on Antarctic tourism impacts. The main topic, methods, management proposals, and research gaps highlighted by the respective authors of these 75 publications were assessed. The range of research topics addressed, the methods used - including the application of established research designs from the field of environmental impact assessment -, and the conclusions reached by the study authors are discussed. Interestingly, almost one third of the studies did not detect a direct relationship between tourism and significant negative effects on the environment. Cumulative impacts of tourism have received little attention, and long-term and comprehensive monitoring programs have been discussed only rarely, leading us to assume that such long-term programs are scarce. More importantly, connections between research and policy or management do not always exist. This analysis highlights the need for a comprehensive strategy to investigate and monitor the environmental impacts of tourism in Antarctica. A first specific research and monitoring programme to stimulate a debate among members of the Antarctic scientific and policy communities is proposed, with the ultimate goal of advancing the regulation and management of Antarctic tourism collaboratively.

The aim of this study was to assess the best timing to perform arthrocentesis in the management of temporomandibular disorders with regard to conservative treatment. A systematic search based on PRISMA guidelines, including a computer search with specific keywords, reference list search, and manual search was performed. Relevant articles were selected after three search rounds for final review based on six predefined inclusion criteria, followed by a round of critical appraisal. Eleven publications, including eight randomized controlled trials and three prospective clinical studies, were included in the review. The studies were divided into three groups based on the timing of arthrocentesis: (1) arthrocentesis as the initial treatment; (2) early arthrocentesis; and (3) late arthrocentesis. Meta-analysis was carried out to compare the efficacy of improvement in mouth opening and pain reduction in the three groups. All three groups showed improvement in mouth opening and pain reduction, with forest plots suggesting that arthrocentesis performed within 3 months of conservative treatment might produce beneficial results. We conclude that there is a knowledge gap in the current literature regarding the preferable timing to perform arthrocentesis in the management of temporomandibular disorders, and more high-quality randomized controlled trials are required to shed light on this subject.

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is an abnormal growth process that results in the development of mandibular asymmetry. The aetiopathogenesis of this entity is still unclear. Various factors including hormonal influences, intrauterine factors, trauma, infection, and genetics have been speculated to lead to the development of UCH. In genetic epidemiology, twins have been a valuable resource for investigating the genetic basis of complex traits and diseases. We present a case of mirror-image UCH in a pair of monozygotic twins, providing evidence of a possible genetic link for this mandibular growth disorder. The concordance in the monozygotic twins appears to be reflected by the precise mirror-image presentation of the congenital dentofacial anomalies. Further twin studies would be useful in clarifying the contributions of genetic and environmental factors to the presence and development of UCH.

Literacy is an important predictor of health care utilization and outcomes. We examine literacy among people seeking care in a state funded mental health clinic (Site 1) and a safety-net hospital clinic (Site 2). Limited literacy was defined as literacy at or below the 8th grade level. At Site 1, 53% of participants had limited reading literacy and 78% had limited aural literacy. At Site 2, 72% had limited reading and 90% had limited aural literacy. Regression analyses examined associations among limited literacy and psychiatric, neurocognitive and sociodemographic characteristics. Few associations among psychiatric and neurocognitive factors, and literacy were found. At Site 2, black and "other" race participants had higher odds for limited literacy compared to white participants suggesting that limited literacy may be an under-examined mechanism in understanding racial disparities in mental health. Work is needed to understand the relationships among literacy, mental health and mental health care.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence and recovery pattern of neurosensory deficit (NSD) following Le Fort I osteotomy, and to identify the possible risk factors that might contribute to the complication. A prospective longitudinal observational study on the incidence of NSD was conducted on patients who received Le Fort I osteotomy. Subjective and objective standardized neurosensory assessments were performed preoperatively as the baseline, and postoperatively at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months. Possible risk factors for NSD including patient age and sex, surgeon experience, and Le Fort I osteotomy with or without multi-segmentation were analysed. Sixty-six patients (43 female, 23 male) with 132 sides of Le Fort I osteotomy were recruited. The incidence of NSD at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months was 81.8%, 59.8%, 39.4%, 19.7%, 7.6%, and 3.2%, respectively. Subjective severity of NSD improved with time. Older age was found to be a risk factor for NSD in the early postoperative period, but there was no difference in the long-term. Patient sex, surgeon experience, and the need for multi-segmentation were not found to be related to the incidence of NSD after Le Fort I osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been associated with an increase in cardiovascular diseases incidence. To evaluate whether air pollution can accelerate atherogenic processes, we assessed the effects of air pollution on important surrogate markers of atherosclerosis [brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT)]. METHODS: A total of 1656 Han Chinese (mean age 46.0 + 11.2 years; male 47%) in Hong Kong, Macau, Pun Yu, Yu County and the 3-Gorges Territories (Yangtze River) were studied between 1996 and 2007 [Chinese Atherosclerosis in the Aged and Young Project (the CATHAY Study)]. Cardiovascular risk profiles were evaluated. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 µm (PM2.5) parameters were computed from satellite sensors. Brachial FMD and carotid IMT were measured by ultrasound. RESULTS: Health parameters [age, gender, body mass index, waist : hip ratio (WHR) and glucose)] were similar in lowest and highest PM2.5 exposure tertiles, systolic and diastolic blood pressures and triglycerides were higher (P < 0.001) and low-density cholesterol (LDL-C) was lower in the top PM2.5 tertile (P < 0.001). Brachial FMD [7.84 ± 1.77, 95% confidence interval (CI) 7.59-8.10%, vs 8.50 ± 2.52, 95% CI 8.23-8.77%, P < 0.0001) was significantly lower and carotid IMT (0.68 ± 0.13 mm, 95% CI 0.67-0.69 mm vs 0.63 mm ± 0.15 mm 95% CI 0.62-0.64 mm; P < 0.0001) was significantly thicker in the top PM2.5 tertile compared with the lowest tertile. On multiple regression, FMD was inversely related to PM2.5 (beta = 0.134, P = 0.015) independent of gender, age and blood pressure (model R2 = 0.156, F-value = 7.6, P < 0.0001). Carotid IMT was significantly correlated with PM2.5 exposure (beta = 0.381, P < 0.0001) independent of age, location, gender, WHR, blood pressure and LDL-C (model R2 = 0.408, F-value = 51.4, P-value <0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Air pollution is strongly associated with markers of early atherosclerosis, suggesting a potential target for preventive intervention.

The sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) are two common orthognathic procedures for the treatment of mandibular prognathism. This randomized clinical trial compared the surgical morbidities between SSRO and IVRO for patients with mandibular prognathism over the first 2 years postoperative. Ninety-eight patients (40 male, 58 female) with a mean age of 24.4±3.5 years underwent bilateral SSRO (98 sides) or IVRO (98 sides) as part or all of their orthognathic surgery. IVRO presented less short-term and long-term surgical morbidity in general. The SSRO group had a greater incidence of inferior alveolar nerve deficit at all follow-up time points (P< 0.01). There was more TMJ pain at 6 weeks (P= 0.047) and 3 months (P= 0.001) postoperative in the SSRO group. The SSRO group also presented more minor complications, which were related to titanium plate exposure and infection. There were no major complications for either technique in this study. Despite the need for intermaxillary fixation, IVRO appears to be associated with less surgical morbidity than SSRO when performed as a mandibular setback procedure to treat mandibular prognathism.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate whether the thicknesses of the two rami differ in patients with mandibular asymmetry. Preoperative cone beam computed tomography scans of 78 patients with mandibular asymmetry were assessed for ramus thickness, mandibular length, and mandibular shift. The results showed that the ramus was thinner on the longer side than on the shorter side in 85.9% of the patients. On average, the longer side of the mandible was 2.74mm longer (range 0.07-9.90mm, standard deviation 1.92mm) and 0.55mm thinner (range -0.61 to 2.02mm, standard deviation 0.59mm) than the shorter side (both P<0.001). This study indicates a trend in the discrepancy in ramus thickness between the longer and shorter side of about 8% of the mean thickness of the ramus. Regression analysis showed that for every 1-mm increase in the length of the mandible, the thickness of the superior aspect of the ramus was reduced by 0.041 mm (P=0.009) and the anterior aspect by 0.125 mm (P=0.001). Age and sex did not have a significant influence on the thickness of the mandible. It is concluded that the longer side of the mandible tends to be thinner at the ramus than the shorter side in patients with mandibular asymmetry. The implication of this finding could be important in relation to the sagittal split ramus osteotomy.
