RESUMO

Falls constitute a leading cause of unintentional injury deaths among older adults. This study aimed to examine the comprehensive characteristics of fatal falls among older individuals in Yunnan Province, China, to highlight the challenges faced in elderly care. A total of 22,798 accidental fall-related deaths were extracted from China's National Disease Surveillance Points System aged 60 and above between 2015 and 2019. Quantitative and textual data were analyzed to assess the incidence rates of initiating factors, locations, symptoms, and overall survival (OS) outcomes after falling. Hypertension emerged as the most significant intrinsic factor, especially among individuals aged between 70 and 79, female older adults, and urban residents (P < 0.001). Home was identified as the most common location where fatal falls occurred (61.19%). The head was the most commonly injured body region (58.75%). The median of OS for all fatal falls was 2 days (0.13, 30), of which deaths occurred within 24 h [9287 (49.36%)]. There were instances where timely discovery after falling did not occur in 625 cases; their median of OS was significantly shorter compared to those discovered promptly after falling (P < 0.001). Targeted interventions focusing on fall prevention and post-fall care are equally crucial for the well-being of older adults.

RESUMO

This study examined the performance and microbial community dynamics of an anaerobic volatile fatty acid (VFA) production reactor for treating fruit waste by stepwise increasing organic loading rates (OLRs) from 8 to 24 g volatile total solids (VTS)/(L·d). Results showed that higher VFA concentrations of 52.25-61.90 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L can be maintained at each OLR, thereby resulting to a production of 0.70-0.76 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)VFA/g VTS. Notably, an increase in OLR from 8 to 14 g VTS/(L·d) was beneficial for achieving higher VFA concentrations and yields. Moreover, an increase in OLR affected the VFA distribution significantly; acetate and butyrate became dominant in the fermentation liquid at OLRs ≥ 14 g VTS/(L·d). Microbial community dynamics analysis revealed that phyla Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota were predominant at each OLR, and the genera Lactobacillus, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12, and Caproiciproducens were closely related to anaerobic VFA production.

RESUMO

Background: A national health education program in impoverished counties to promote health literacy among rural populations was released by the Chinese government in 2018. Under this nationwide campaign, an integrated health education program was implemented in Yunnan province, which included additional culturally sensitive educational components for the severely impoverished prefectures. Objective: This study examined the differential effects of the health education program models on health literacy outcomes among residents in poverty-stricken areas. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was applied with two arms that included surveys at baseline (in October 2019) and endline (in June 2021) to collect a range of individual-level health information, including the Chinese Resident Health Literacy Scale. The intervention group received the national health education program with the additional Yunnan specific program; the control group received only the national program. Respondents were recruited via a multi-stage stratified sampling, including 641 participants at baseline (261 from the intervention sites and 380 from the control sites) and 693 participants at endline (288 from the intervention sites and 405 from the control sites). Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between program intervention and health literacy outcomes. Results: The overall health literacy levels were low (1.87%) at baseline, and there was no statistically significant difference between two groups (1.92 vs. 1.84%, P = 1.000). A significant increase (from 1.87 to 11.11%, P < 0.001) in the health literacy level was observed at endline in both groups. The magnitude of increase was significantly greater in the intervention group relative to the control group (17.71 vs. 6.42%, P < 0.001). Adjusting for the confounding factors of individual and household characteristics, results from multivariate logistic regression revealed that the odds of having adequate health literacy among participants who received both the National Program and the Yunnan Program were 3.92 times higher than those who only received the National Program (95% CI: 2.10-7.33). Conclusion: The findings highlighted the importance of incorporating non-verbal visual aids and culturally-sensitive media tools in health literacy education to address healthy lifestyle and the living contexts of the populations in poverty-stricken areas.

RESUMO

Biological approaches are considered promising and eco-friendly strategies to remediate Hg contamination in soil. This study investigated the potential of two 'green' additives, Hg-volatilizing bacteria (Pseudomonas sp. DC-B1 and Bacillus sp. DC-B2) and sawdust biochar, and their combination to reduce Hg(II) phytoavailability in soil and the effect of the additives on the soil bacterial community. The results showed that the Hg(II) contents in soils and lettuce shoots and roots were all reduced with these additives, achieving more declines of 12.3-27.4%, 24.8-57.8% and 2.0-48.6%, respectively, within 56 days of incubation compared to the control with no additive. The combination of DC-B2 and 4% biochar performed best in reducing Hg(II) contents in lettuce shoots, achieving a decrease of 57.8% compared with the control. Pyrosequencing analysis showed that the overall bacterial community compositions in the soil samples were similar under different treatments, despite the fact that the relative abundance of dominant genera altered with the additives, suggesting a relatively weak impact of the additives on the soil microbial ecosystem. The low relative abundances of Pseudomonas and Bacillus, close to the background levels, at the end of the experiment indicated a small biological disturbance of the local microbial niche by the exogenous bacteria.
