RESUMO

Melanins are dark-brown to black-colored biomacromolecules which have been thoroughly studied in animals and microorganisms. However, the biochemical and molecular basis of plant melanins are poorly understood. We first characterized melanin from the black radish (Raphanus sativus var. niger) 'HLB' through spectroscopic techniques. p-Coumaric acid was identified as the main precursor of radish melanin. Moreover, a joint analysis of transcriptome and coexpression network was performed for the two radish accessions with black and white cortexes, 'HLB' and '55'. A set of R2R3-type RsMYBs and enzyme-coding genes exhibited a coexpression pattern, and were strongly correlated with melanin formation in radish. Transient overexpression of two phenol oxidases RsLAC7 (laccase 7) or RsPOD22-1 (peroxidase 22-1) resulted in a deeper brown color around the infiltration sites and a significant increase in the total phenol content. Furthermore, co-injection of the transcriptional activator RsMYB48/RsMYB97 with RsLAC7 and/or RsPOD22-1, markedly increased the yield of black extracts. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that these extracts are similar to the melanin found in 'HLB'. Our findings advance the understanding of structural information and the transcriptional regulatory mechanism underlying melanin formation in radish.

Recessive genic male sterility (RGMS) provides an effective approach for the commercial exploitation of heterosis, especially in Brassica crops. Although some artificial RGMS mutants have been reported in B. rapa, no causal genes derived from these natural mutants have been identified so far. In this study, a spontaneous RGMS mutant Bcajh97-01A derived from the 'Aijiaohuang' line traced back to the 1980 s was identified. Genetic analysis revealed that the RGMS trait was controlled by a single locus in the Bcajh97-01A/B system. Bulk segregant analysis (BSA) in combination with linkage analysis was employed to delimit the causal gene to an approximate 129 kb interval on chromosome A02. The integrated information of transcriptional levels and the predicted genes in the target region indicated that the Brmmd1 (BraA02g017420) encoding a PHD-containing nuclear protein was the most likely candidate gene. A 374 bp miniature inverted-repeat transposable element (MITE) was inserted into the first exon to prematurely stop the Brmmd1 gene translation, thus blocking the normal expression of this gene at the tetrad stage in the Bcajh97-01A. Additionally, a co-segregating structure variation (SV) marker was developed to rapidly screen the RGMS progenies from Bcajh97-01A/B system. Our findings reveal that BraA02g017420 is the causal gene responsible for the RGMS trait. This study lays a foundation for marker-assisted selection and further molecular mechanism exploration of pollen development in B. rapa.

Highly selective production of CH4 from photocatalytic CO2 reduction is still a great challenge which involves the kinetically unfavorable transfers of 8 protons and 8 electrons. Herein, CeO2 photocatalysts incorporated with isolated Ru single-atoms have been fabricated, which demonstrate dramatically elevated selectivity of CH4 from CO2 reduction. The introduced Ru single-atoms promote carrier separation and accelerate electron transfer, which efficiently enhances the photocatalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ FT-IR analysis manifest that the Ru single-atom active sites play an indispensable role in strengthening the adsorption of *CO intermediate on the catalyst surface and promoting H2O oxidation to generate abundant protons, thus favoring *CO protonation into *CHxO (x = 1, 2, 3) species and final deoxygenation into CH4. This work provides an effective strategy by constructing single-atom active sites to modulate and stabilize the key intermediates of CO2 photoreduction to improve the selectivity of the target products.

CO2 electroreduction into liquid fuels is of broad interest and benefits reducing the energy crisis and environment burdens. CuS has been reported to be a desirable candidate for CO2 electroreduction into formate; however, its formate selectivity and stability are still far from the demands of practical application. Herein, we report CuS nanoparticles exhibiting good Faradaic efficiency of formate (about 98 %) in CO2 electroreduction and its deactivation mechanism during the reaction. The deactivation of CuS was found to be associated with the reconstruction and S loss of CuS, which deteriorates the Faradaic efficiency of formate. Combined with ionic and gas analyses, the S atom in CuS was lost in the form of H2 S, SO2 , and SO4 2- , followed by the reconstruction of CuS into copper oxides. Such a catalyst reconstruction facilitates electroreductions of CO2 and H2 O, respectively, into CO and H2 , etc., resulting in the degradation of catalytical performance of CO2 electroreduction into formate. This work reveals the important role of S loss and reconstruction of metal sulfide catalysts during the electroreduction reaction, which may benefit the further development of CuS-based electro-catalyst for CO2 electroreduction.

Background: Sepsis-associated liver dysfunction (SALD) has high incidence and mortality in patients with intra-abdominal infection (IAI). The associations between acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI), gut microbiota, and SALD were evaluated in patients with IAI. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to assess the relationship between AGI and SALD in patients with IAI. Patients were divided into non-SALD and sepsis-induced cholestasis (SIC) groups, which is a subtype of SALD. SIC was defined as total bilirubin >2 mg/dL. AGI incidences between the two groups were compared using Chi-square test. Subsequently, a prospective study was conducted to investigate the gut microbiota differences between patients without SALD and those with SIC. Fecal samples were collected on days 1, 3, and 7 after admission to analyze changes in gut microbiota using 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid sequencing. Results: One hundred thirty-four patients with IAI were included retrospectively, with 77 SALD and 57 non-SALD cases. Among patients with SALD, 71 were diagnosed with SIC. Patients with SIC had a higher incidence of AGI compared to those without SALD (28.07% vs. 56.34%, p < 0.05), and a severity-dependent relationship was found between AGI grade and SIC occurrence. Subsequently, 20 patients with IAI were recruited prospectively, with 10 patients each assigned to the non-SALD and SIC groups. Patients with SIC had a more severe gut microbiota disorder on day 7 than those without SALD, including lower microbiota diversities, decreased abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, and increased abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria at the phylum level. Furthermore, Burkholderia - Caballeronia - Paraburkholderia and Delftia, the two most abundant genera, were significantly higher in the SIC group than in the non-SALD group. Functional prediction analysis showed that the top three KEGG pathways were ribosome, pyrimidine metabolism, and the two-component system. During the first week, the abundance of Proteobacteria decreased significantly, whereas Cyanobacteria increased in the non-SALD group; however, the phyla taxa did not change significantly in the SIC group. Conclusion: There exists a severity-dependent relationship between AGI grade and SIC occurrence in adult patients with IAI. A severe gut microbiota disorder was discovered in SIC during the first week of the intensive care unit stay.

Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are mediators of intestinal immunity and barrier function. Recent studies have investigated the role of the mammalian target of rapamycin complex (mTOR) in ILC3s, whereas the mTORC1-related mechanisms and crosstalk between mTORC1 and mTORC2 involved in regulating ILC3 homeostasis remain unknown. In this study, we found that mTORC1 but not mTORC2 was critical in ILC3 development, IL-22 production, and ILC3-mediated intestinal homeostasis. Single-cell RNA sequencing revealed that mTORC1 deficiency led to disruption of ILC3 heterogeneity, showing an increase in differentiation into ILC1-like phenotypes. Mechanistically, mTORC1 deficiency decreased the expression of NFIL3, which is a critical transcription factor responsible for ILC3 development. The activities of both mTORC1 and mTORC2 were increased in wild-type ILC3s after activation by IL-23, whereas inhibition of mTORC1 by Raptor deletion or rapamycin treatment resulted in increased mTORC2 activity. Previous studies have demonstrated that S6K, the main downstream target of mTORC1, can directly phosphorylate Rictor to dampen mTORC2 activity. Our data found that inhibition of mTORC1 activity by rapamycin reduced Rictor phosphorylation in ILC3s. Reversing the increased mTORC2 activity via heterozygous or homozygous knockout of Rictor in Raptor-deleted ILC3s resulted in severe ILC3 loss and complete susceptibility to intestinal infection in mice with mTORC1 deficiency (100% mortality). Thus, mTORC1 acts as a rheostat of ILC3 heterogeneity, and mTORC2 protects ILC3s from severe loss of cells and immune activity against intestinal infection when mTORC1 activity is diminished.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the association between waist circumference (WC) and cardiovascular death in patients with permanent pacemakers (PPMs). Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study that enrolled patients who underwent PPM implantation in Fuwai Hospital from May 2010 to April 2014, according to the BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring database. The WC was treated as sex-specific quartiles, and patients were divided into three groups according to body mass index (BMI): normal (≤22.9 kg/m2), overweight (23-24.9 kg/m2), and obese (≥25 kg/m2). Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for cardiovascular death according to WC and BMI in patients. Results: 492 patients with PPMs implantation were analyzed (mean age: 71.9 ± 10.8 years; 55.1% men (n = 271)). Data showed that after a mean follow-up 67.2 ± 17.5 months, 24 (4.9%) patients had experienced cardiovascular death and 71 (14.4%) were cases of all-cause mortality. Men in the third quartile of WC had an HR of 10.67 (Model 4, 95% CI: 1.00-115.21, p trend = 0.04) for cardiovascular death. However, the association disappeared in female patients (Model 4, HR = 3.99, 95% CI: 0.37-42.87, p trend = 0.25). There was no association between BMI and cardiovascular death or all-cause mortality in both male and female patients. Conclusions: Abdominal obesity was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death in patients with PPMs, and this relationship was only in male patients.

Radish is an economically important root vegetable worldwide. In this study, the 217 cultivated radish accessions were collected and genotyped. To detect the genotypes of these accessions, a total of 24 structure variation (SV) markers distributed on nine chromosomes were employed to analyze genetic diversity and construct a core germplasm collection of radish. The results of polymorphism information content (PIC) indicated a good polymorphism of these SV markers. Population structure analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that the 217 radish accessions fell into three main populations (P1, P2, and P3). Genetic diversity analysis showed that these populations were highly associated with geographical distribution. The values of the fixation index (FST) indicated a high genetic diversity between P2 and P3, and a moderate genetic diversity between P1 and P2, and P1 and P3. Furthermore, the 43 core germplasm were exploited for creating cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) lines and cultivating new radish varieties. The high genetic diversity of 217 radish germplasms will not only provide valuable resources for future genetic mapping and functional genomic research, but also facilitate core germplasm utilization and the molecular breeding of radish.

Purpose: A discussion about the correlation between the level of serum sodium and sepsis-induced coagulopathy (SIC). Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on sepsis patients who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from January 2021 to December 2022. Based on the presence of coagulation disorders, the patients were divided into two groups: sepsis-induced coagulopathy (SIC) and non-sepsis-induced coagulopathy (non-SIC) groups. We recorded demographic characteristics and laboratory indicators at the time of ICU admission, and analyzed relationship between serum sodium level and SIC. Results: One hundred and twenty-five patients with sepsis were enrolled, among which, the SIC and the non-SIC groups included 62 and 63 patients, respectively. Compared to patients in the non-SIC group, the level of serum sodium of those in the SIC was significantly higher (p < 0.001). Multi-factor logistic regression showed serum sodium level was independently associated with SIC (or = 1.127, p = 0.001). Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that the higher the serum sodium level, the significantly higher the SIC score was (r = 0.373, p < 0.001). Additionally, the mortality rate of patients with sepsis in the ICU were significantly correlated with increased serum sodium levels (p = 0.014). Conclusion: An increase in serum sodium level was independently associated with an increased occurrence of SIC and also associated with the poor prognosis for patients with sepsis.

Aims: To determine the interaction of electrical storm (ES) and impaired left ventircular ejection fraction (LVEF) on the mortality risk of patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Methods and results: A total of 554 Chinese ICD recipients from 2010 to 2014 were retrospectively included and the mean follow-up was 58 months. The proportions of dilated cardiomyopathy and the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were 26.0% (144/554) and 5.6% (31/554), respectively. There were 8 cases with long QT syndrome, 6 with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and 2 with Brugada syndrome. Patients with prior MI accounted for 15.5% (86/554) and pre-implantation syncope accounted for 23.3% (129/554). A total of 199 (35.9%) patients had primary prevention indications for ICD therapy. Both ES and impaired LVEF (<40%) were independent predictors for all-cause mortality [hazard ratio (HR) 2.40, 95% CI 1.57-3.68, P < 0.001; HR 1.94, 95% CI 1.30-2.90, P = 0.001, respectively] and cardiovascular mortality (HR 4.63, 95% CI 2.68-7.98, P < 0.001; HR 2.56, 95% CI 1.47-4.44, p = 0.001, respectively). Compared with patients with preserved LVEF (≥40%) and without ES, patients with impaired LVEF and ES had highest all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risks (HR 4.17, 95% CI 2.16-8.06, P < 0.001; HR 11.91, 95% CI 5.55-25.56, P < 0.001, respectively). In patients with impaired LVEF, ES increased the all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risks (HR 1.84, 95% CI 1.00-3.37, P = 0.034; HR 4.86, 95% CI 2.39-9.86, P < 0.001, respectively). In patients with ES, the deleterious effects of impaired LVEF seemed confined to cardiovascular mortality (HR 2.54, 95% CI 1.25-5.14, p = 0.038), and the HR for all-cause mortality was not significant statistically (HR 1.14, 95% CI 0.54-2.38, P = 0.735). Conclusion: Both ES and impaired LVEF are independent predictors of mortality risk in this Chinese cohort of ICD recipients. The interaction of ES and impaired LVEF in patients significantly amplifies the deleterious effects of each other as distinct disease.

The overall aroma is an important factor of the sensory quality of fruit wines, which attributed to hundreds of volatile compounds. However, the qualitative determination of trace volatile compounds is considered to be very challenging work. GC-Orbitrap-MS with high resolution and high sensitivity provided more possibilities for the determination of volatile compounds, but without the high-resolution mass spectral library. For accuracy of qualitative determination in fruit wines by GC-Orbitrap-MS, a high-resolution mass spectral library, including 76 volatile compounds, was developed in this study. Not only the HRMS spectrum but also the exact ion fragment, relative abundance, retention indices (RI), CAS number, chemical structure diagram, aroma description and aroma threshold (ortho-nasally) were provided and were shown in a database website (Food Flavor Laboratory, http://foodflavorlab.cn/ ). HRMS library was used to successfully identify the volatile compounds mentioned above in 16 fruit wines (5 blueberry wines, 6 goji berry wines and 5 hawthorn wines). The library was developed as an important basis for further understanding of trace volatile compounds in fruit wines.

BACKGROUND: Hypercatabolism often occurs in critically ill patients, and it increases infection rates and mortality in these patients. Enteral nutrition (EN) is commonly used in case of hypercatabolism. However, the effect of amount of calories in EN on hypercatabolism remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: Here, we compared the effect of low-calorie, medium-calorie and high-calorie EN on hypercatabolism in the acute phase of endotoxemia, which is associated with gastrointestinal hormones and hypothalamic neuropeptide proopiomelanocortin (POMC). METHODS: Overall 84 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used for research. A set of rats were divided into 5 groups, Control (NS) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) groups were fed a standard chow diet; LPS + L (LPS + 40 kcal/kg/day EN), LPS + M (LPS + 80 kcal/kg/day EN) and LPS + H (LPS + 120 kcal/kg/day EN) groups received EN through a gastric tube for 3 days. Another set of rats were used for parallel control experiment and divided into 5 groups: NS + F (saline + fasting) and LPS + F (LPS + fasting) groups were given no food, NS + L (saline + 40 kcal/kg/day EN), NS + M (saline + 80 kcal/kg/day EN) and NS + H (saline + 120 kcal/kg/day EN) groups received EN through a gastric tube for 3 days. Hypercatabolism was evaluated by assessing skeletal muscle protein synthesis and atrophy, insulin resistance, and corticosterone levels. Moreover, serum inflammatory factors, gastrointestinal hormones, hypothalamic ghrelin, growth hormone secretagogue receptor-1α, hypothalamic neuropeptide, and intestinal injury indicators were detected. RESULTS: Low-calorie EN effectively increased serum and hypothalamic ghrelin possibly due to slight intestinal barrier damage, thereby decreasing hypothalamic POMC expression; consequently, it alleviated rat insulin resistance, reduced blood cortisol levels and muscle atrophy, and improved the survival rate of rats in the acute phase of endotoxemia. Interestingly, with an increase in calories in enteral nutrition, the aforementioned effects did not increase. CONCLUSIONS: Low-calorie EN could effectively increase gastrointestinal hormone ghrelin by reducing intestinal damage and suppressing POMC expression to ameliorate hypercatabolism when compared with medium-calorie and high-calorie EN. Therefore Low-calorie EN may be preferred for providing EN in the acute stage of endotoxemia.

Increasing the concentration and separation ability of charge carriers in photocatalysts has still been a crucial issue and challenge to achieve high CO2 photoreduction performance. Here, we construct a distinctive heterojunction between semiconductor (CeO2) and metalloid (CuS). It has been discovered that, different from conventional semiconductor and Schottky heterojunctions, in this system, electrons (esc-) located at the conduction band (CB) of CeO2 will transfer to the Fermi level in partially occupied band (CB) of CuS and accumulate there. Then, together with transition electrons (etr-) excited from the CB below Fermi level or fully filled band (B-1) of CuS, these esc- will further transfer to the lowest unoccupied band (B1) of CuS, finally participate in CO2 reduction reaction. Because the concentration and separation efficiency of charge carriers has been obviously increased, this heterojunction exhibits remarkably enhanced CO2 photoreduction performance. In-situ FTIR was conducted to explore the reaction process and the changes of intermediates on the surface of this catalyst during CO2 photoreduction. Given that this type of heterojunction can only be established between a semiconductor and a metalloid and exhibits special electron transfer behavior, this work really provides an unconventional strategy for the design of photocatalysts with superior CO2 photoreduction activity.

BACKGROUND: To study the relationship between objective daily physical activity (PA), as measured by implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)/cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRTDs), and long-term prognoses in patients with age > 75 years at high risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). METHODS: In total, 133 patients with age > 75 years old (age 79.52 ± 3.68 years) in the SUMMIT study were retrospectively analysed. The major endpoint was all-cause mortality, and the minor endpoint was cardiac death. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 57.1 ± 24.2 months (range: from 4 to 96 months). In total, 46 all-cause mortality and 23 cardiac death events occurred. The receiver operating characteristic curve indicated a baseline PA cut-off value of 6.47% (93 min/day) can predict all-cause mortality in patients with age > 75 years, with an area under the curve of 0.670 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.573-0.767, P = 0.001). The sensitivity was 67.4%, and the specificity was 66.7%. Patients with baseline PA ≤ 6.47% had higher rates of all-cause mortality (51.7% vs 20.5%, P < 0.001) and cardiac death (25.0% vs 11.0%, P = 0.040). The estimated Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that patients with PA ≤ 6.47% had an increased cumulative incidence of all-cause mortality (Log-rank P < 0.0001) and cardiac death (Log-rank P = 0.0067). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that PA ≤ 6.47% was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio (HR) 3.137, 95% CI: 1.667-5.904, P < 0.001) and cardiac death (HR value 3.345, 95% CI: 1.394-8.028, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Daily PA of about 1.5 h was associated with lower all-cause mortality and cardiac death risk in patients with age > 75 years and high risk of SCD with ICDs/CRTDs. PA monitoring may aid in long-term management of older patients at high risk of SCD.

Social networking sites (SNSs) have provided a new platform for people to present their narcissism. The objective of the current study was to investigate the underlying mechanisms between active and passive SNS use and vulnerable narcissism among college students. In achieving this, the study based its method on the media effect and social comparative theory and recruited 529 participants to complete the Surveillance Use Scale, Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure, and Hypersensitivity Narcissistic Scale. The results showed that active and passive SNS use were positively related to upward and downward social comparisons. Active and passive SNS use also indirectly predicted vulnerable narcissism through the parallel mediation of upward and downward social comparisons. This study also revealed the vital role of social comparison in the association between SNS use and vulnerable narcissism.

Background: Common ostium of inferior pulmonary veins (COIPV) is a kind of pulmonary vein variation. The safety and efficacy of COIPV isolation using the second-generation cryoballoon (CB) ablation remain unknown. Methods: A total of 10 patients with COIPV from a consecutive series of 1,751 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) were included. Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) was performed using the second-generation CB. Results: The prevalence of a COIPV was 0.57% in this study. PVI was achieved in all pulmonary veins (PVs) without the need for a touch-up. A segmental freeze strategy was applied for each inferior PV, respectively. The mean number of freeze cycles of inferior PVs was 1.4 ± 0.5 for the left inferior pulmonary vein (LIPV), and 2.0 ± 0.9 for the right inferior pulmonary vein (RIPV). Pulmonary vein potential (PVP) of RIPV could not be monitored in real-time in three cases. Eight of 10 patients (80%) were free from atrial arrhythmias without the use of antiarrhythmic drugs during a follow-up period of 23.6 ± 12.9 months. No procedure-related complications occurred in any of the 10 patients. Conclusions: Common ostium of inferior pulmonary veins is a rare but challenging PV variant. PVI with this unusual anatomic variation using the second-generation 28-mm CB is effective and safe.

The etiology of hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) and acute pancreatitis (AP) is complex. Herein, we dissected the underlying etiology in a patient with HTG and AP. The patient had a 20-year history of heavy alcohol consumption and an 8-year history of mild HTG. He was hospitalized for alcohol-triggered AP, with a plasma triglyceride (TG) level up to 21.4 mmol/L. A temporary rise in post-heparin LPL concentration (1.5-2.5 times of controls) was noted during the early days of AP whilst LPL activity was consistently low (50∼70% of controls). His TG level rapidly decreased to normal in response to treatment, and remained normal to borderline high during a ∼3-year follow-up period during which he had abstained completely from alcohol. Sequencing of the five primary HTG genes (i.e., LPL, APOC2, APOA5, GPIHBP1 and LMF1) identified two heterozygous variants. One was the common APOA5 c.553G > T (p.Gly185Cys) variant, which has been previously associated with altered TG levels as well as HTG-induced acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP). The other was a rare variant in the LPL gene, c.756T > G (p.Ile252Met), which was predicted to be likely pathogenic and found experimentally to cause a 40% loss of LPL activity without affecting either protein synthesis or secretion. We provide evidence that both a gene-gene interaction (between the common APOA5 variant and the rare LPL variant) and a gene-environment interaction (between alcohol and digenic inheritance) might have contributed to the development of mild HTG and alcohol-triggered AP in the patient, thereby improving our understanding of the complex etiology of HTG and HTG-AP.

BACKGROUND: It remains no clear conclusion about which is better between robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for the treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to compare the short-term and long-term efficacy between RATS and VATS for NSCLC. METHODS: Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Medline, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched for studies published before December 2020. The quality of the articles was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the data analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3 software. Fixed or random effect models were applied according to heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 18 studies including 11,247 patients were included in the meta-analyses, of which 5114 patients were in the RATS group and 6133 in the VATS group. Compared with VATS, RATS was associated with less blood loss (WMD = - 50.40, 95% CI -90.32 ~ - 10.48, P = 0.010), lower conversion rate (OR = 0.50, 95% CI 0.43 ~ 0.60, P < 0.001), more harvested lymph nodes (WMD = 1.72, 95% CI 0.63 ~ 2.81, P = 0.002) and stations (WMD = 0.51, 95% CI 0.15 ~ 0.86, P = 0.005), shorter duration of postoperative chest tube drainage (WMD = - 0.61, 95% CI -0.78 ~ - 0.44, P < 0.001) and hospital stay (WMD = - 1.12, 95% CI -1.58 ~ - 0.66, P < 0.001), lower overall complication rate (OR = 0.90, 95% CI 0.83 ~ 0.99, P = 0.020), lower recurrence rate (OR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.36 ~ 0.72, P < 0.001), and higher cost (WMD = 3909.87 USD, 95% CI 3706.90 ~ 4112.84, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between RATS and VATS in operative time, mortality, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS). Sensitivity analysis showed that no significant differences were found between the two techniques in conversion rate, number of harvested lymph nodes and stations, and overall complication. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed that RATS is a feasible and safe technique compared with VATS in terms of short-term and long-term outcomes. Moreover, more randomized controlled trials comparing the two techniques with rigorous study designs are still essential to evaluate the value of robotic surgery for NSCLC.

Objective: To clarify the impact of sex on physical activity (PA) levels among patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators/cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (ICD/CRT-D) and its association with cardiac death and all-cause mortality. Methods: Overall, data of 820 patients with ICD/CRT-D from the SUMMIT registry were retrospectively analyzed. Baseline PA from 30 to 60 days after device implantation was measured using Biotronik accelerometer sensors. The primary and secondary endpoints were cardiac death and all-cause mortality, respectively. Results: Baseline PA levels were significantly higher in male patients than in female patients (11.40 ± 5.83% vs. 9.93 ± 5.49%, P = 0.001). Males had higher predictive PA cut-off values for cardiac death (11.16 vs. 7.15%) and all-cause mortality (11.33 vs. 7.17%).
