RESUMO

Spin and mass properties provide essential clues in distinguishing the origins of coalescing black holes (BHs). With a dedicated semiparametric population model for the coalescing binary black holes (BBHs), we identify two distinct categories of BHs among the GWTC-3 events, which is favored over the one population scenario by a logarithmic Bayes factor (lnB) of 7.5. One category, with a mass ranging from ∼25M_{⊙} to ∼80M_{⊙}, is distinguished by the high spin magnitudes (∼0.75) and consistent with the hierarchical merger origin. The other category, characterized by low spins, has a sharp mass cutoff at ∼40M_{⊙}, which is natural for the stellar-collapse origin and in particular the pair-instability explosion of massive stars. We infer the local hierarchical merger rate density as 0.46_{-0.24}^{+0.61} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}. Additionally, we find that a fraction of the BBHs has a cosine-spin-tilt-angle distribution concentrated preferentially around 1, and the fully isotropic distribution for spin orientation is disfavored by a lnB of -6.3, suggesting that the isolated field evolution channels are contributing to the total population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel plus cisplatin as the regimen of conversional chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) in locally advanced borderline resectable or unresectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: Patients with locally advanced ESCC (cT34, Nany, M01, M1 was limited to lymph node metastasis in the supraclavicular area) were enrolled. All the patients received the cCRT of nab-paclitaxel plus cisplatin. After the cCRT, those resectable patients received esophagectomy; those unresectable patients continued to receive the definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT). The locoregional control (LRC), overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS), distant metastasis free survival (DMFS), pathological complete response (pCR), R0 resection rate, adverse events (AEs) and postoperative complications were calculated. RESULTS: 45 patients with ESCC treated from October 2019 to May 2021 were finally included. The median follow-up time was 30.3 months. The LRC, OS, EFS, DMFS at 1 and 2 years were 81.5%, 86.6%, 64.3%, 73.2 and 72.4%, 68.8%, 44.8%, 52.7% respectively. 21 patients (46.7%) received conversional chemoradiotherapy plus surgery (cCRT+S). The pCR rate and R0 resection rate were 47.6 and 84.0%. The LRC rate at 1 and 2 years were 95.0%, 87.1% in cCRT+S patitents and 69.3%, 58.7% in dCRT patients respectively (HR, 5.14; 95%CI, 1.10-23.94; P = 0.021). The toxicities during chemoradiotherapy were tolerated, and the most common grade 3-4 toxicitiy was radiation esophagitis (15.6%). The most common postoperative complication was pleural effusion (38.1%) and no grade ≥ IIIb complications were observed. CONCLUSION: nab-paclitaxel plus cisplatin are safe as the regimen of conversional chemoradiotherapy of ESCC.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating disease that leads to severe neurological deficits. Microglia are the first line of defence in the brain and play a crucial role in neurological recovery after ICH, whose activities are primarily driven by glucose metabolism. However, little is known regarding the status of glucose metabolism in microglia and its interactions with inflammatory responses after ICH. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated microglial glycolysis and its mechanistic effects on microglial inflammation after ICH. METHODS: We explored the status of glucose metabolism in the ipsilateral region and in fluorescence-activated-cell-sorting-isolated (FACS-isolated) microglia via 2-deoxy-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) analyses and gamma emission, respectively. Energy-related targeted metabolomics, along with 13C-glucose isotope tracing, was utilised to analyse glycolytic products in microglia. Mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (MitoROS) accumulation was assessed by flow cytometry. Behavioural, western blotting, gene regulation, and enzymatic activity analyses were conducted with a focus on microglia. RESULTS: Neurological dysfunction was strongly correlated with decreased FDG-PET signals in the perihaematomal region, where microglial uptake of FDG was reduced. The decreased quantity of glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P) in microglia was attributed to the downregulation of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) and hexokinase 2 (HK2). Enhanced inflammatory responses were driven by HK2 suppression via decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, which could be rescued by MitoROS scavengers. HK inhibitors aggravated neurological injury by suppressing FDG uptake and enhancing microglial inflammation in ICH mice. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate an unexpected metabolic status in pro-inflammatory microglia after ICH, consisting of glycolysis impairment caused by the downregulation of GLUT1 and HK2. Additionally, HK2 suppression promotes inflammatory responses by disrupting mitochondrial function, providing insight into the mechanisms by which inflammation may be facilitated after ICH and indicating that metabolic enzymes as potential targets for ICH treatment.

RESUMO

Infertility is a global health problem affecting millions of people of reproductive age worldwide, with approximately half caused by males. Chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) has strong antioxidant capacity, but its impact on the male reproductive system has not been effectively evaluated. To address this, we integrated RNA-seq, serum metabolomics and intestinal 16 S rDNA analysis to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the male reproductive system. The results showed that COS has potential targets for the treatment of oligospermia, which can promote the expression of meiotic proteins DDX4, DAZL and SYCP1, benefit germ cell proliferation and testicular development, enhance antioxidant capacity, and increase the expression of testicular steroid proteins STAR and CYP11A1. At the same time, COS can activate PI3K-Akt signaling pathway in testis and TM3 cells. Microbiome and metabolomics analysis suggested that COS alters gut microbial community composition and cooperates with serum metabolites to regulate spermatogenesis. Therefore, COS promotes male reproduction by regulating intestinal microorganisms and serum metabolism, activating PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, improving testicular antioxidant capacity and steroid regulation.

RESUMO

Background: Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a rare brain tumor that accounts for <1% of all gliomas. An in-depth understanding of PXA's molecular makeup remains a work in progress due to its limited numbers globally. Separately, spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (pICH) is an uncommon but potentially devastating emergency in young children, often caused by vascular malformations or underlying hematological conditions. We describe an interesting case of a toddler who presented with pICH, later found to have a PXA as the underlying cause of hemorrhage. Further molecular interrogation of the tumor revealed a neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) gene fusion and CDKN2A deletion more commonly seen in infantile high-grade gliomas. The unusual clinicopathological features of this case are discussed in corroboration with published literature. Case presentation: A previously well 2-year-old male presented with acute drowsiness and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure secondary to a large right frontoparietal intracerebral hematoma. He underwent an emergency craniotomy and partial evacuation of the hematoma for lifesaving measures. Follow-up neuroimaging reported a likely right intra-axial tumor with hemorrhagic components. Histology confirmed the tumor to be a PXA (WHO 2). Additional molecular investigations showed it was negative for BRAFV600E mutation but was positive for CDKN2A homozygous deletion and a unique neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) gene fusion. The patient subsequently underwent second-stage surgery to proceed with maximal safe resection of the remnant tumor, followed by the commencement of adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: To date, there are very few pediatric cases of PXA that present with spontaneous pICH and whose tumors have undergone thorough molecular testing. Our patient's journey highlights the role of a dedicated multidisciplinary neuro-oncology team to guide optimal treatment.

RESUMO

Objective: Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT) is the long-lasting causal treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). How to enhance the adherence of patients to maximize the benefit of allergen immunotherapy (AIT) plays a crucial role in the management of AIT. This study aims to leverage novel machine learning models to precisely predict the risk of non-adherence of AR patients and related local symptom scores in 3 years SCIT. Methods: The research develops and analyzes two models, sequential latent-variable model (SLVM) of Stochastic Latent Actor-Critic (SLAC) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). SLVM is a probabilistic model that captures the dynamics of patient adherence, while LSTM is a type of recurrent neural network designed to handle time-series data by maintaining long-term dependencies. These models were evaluated based on scoring and adherence prediction capabilities. Results: Excluding the biased samples at the first time step, the predictive adherence accuracy of the SLAC models is from 60% to 72%, and for LSTM models, it is 66%-84%, varying according to the time steps. The range of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for SLAC models is between 0.93 and 2.22, while for LSTM models it is between 1.09 and 1.77. Notably, these RMSEs are significantly lower than the random prediction error of 4.55. Conclusion: We creatively apply sequential models in the long-term management of SCIT with promising accuracy in the prediction of SCIT nonadherence in AR patients. While LSTM outperforms SLAC in adherence prediction, SLAC excels in score prediction for patients undergoing SCIT for AR. The state-action-based SLAC adds flexibility, presenting a novel and effective approach for managing long-term AIT.

RESUMO

To explore advanced oxidation catalysts, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by Co-Ni-Mo/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite catalysts was investigated. A compound of NiCo2S4, MoS2, and CNTs was successfully prepared using a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The results revealed that the activation of PMS by Co-Ni-Mo/CNT yielded an exceptional Rhodamine B decolorization efficiency of 99% within 20 min for the Rhodamine B solution. The degradation rate of Co-Ni-Mo/CNT was 4.5 times higher than that of Ni-Mo/CNT or Co-Mo/CNT, and 1.9 times as much than that of Co-Ni/CNT. Additionally, radical quenching experiments revealed that the principal active groups were 1O2, surface-bound SO4•-, and •OH radicals. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited low metal ion leaching and favorable stability. Mechanism studies revealed that Mo4+ on the surface of MoS2 participated in the oxidation of PMS and the transformation of Co3+/Co2+ and Ni3+/Ni2+. The synergism between MoS2 and NiCo2S4 reduces the charge transfer resistance between the catalyst and solution interface, thus accelerating the reaction rate. Interconnected structures composed of metal sulfides and CNTs can also enhance the electron transfer process and afford sufficient active reaction sites. Our work provides a further understanding of the design of multi-metal sulfides for wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Auxin Response Factors (ARFs) make up a plant-specific transcription factor family that mainly couples perception of the phytohormone, auxin, and gene expression programs and plays an important and multi-faceted role during plant growth and development. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is a representative Cymbopogon species widely used in gardening, beverages, fragrances, traditional medicine, and heavy metal phytoremediation. Biomass yield is an important trait for several agro-economic purposes of lemongrass, such as landscaping, essential oil production, and phytoremediation. Therefore, we performed gene mining of CfARFs and identified 26 and 27 CfARF-encoding genes in each of the haplotype genomes of lemongrass, respectively. Phylogenetic and domain architecture analyses showed that CfARFs can be divided into four groups, among which groups 1, 2, and 3 correspond to activator, repressor, and ETTN-like ARFs, respectively. To identify the CfARFs that may play major roles during the growth of lemongrass plants, RNA-seq was performed on three tissues (leaf, stem, and root) and four developmental stages (3-leaf, 4-leaf, 5-leaf. and mature stages). The expression profiling of CfARFs identified several highly expressed activator and repressor CfARFs and three CfARFs (CfARF3, 18, and 35) with gradually increased levels during leaf growth. Haplotype-resolved transcriptome analysis revealed that biallelic expression dominance is frequent among CfARFs and contributes to their gene expression patterns. In addition, co-expression network analysis identified the modules enriched with CfARFs. By establishing orthologous relationships among CfARFs, sorghum ARFs, and maize ARFs, we showed that CfARFs were mainly expanded by whole-genome duplications, and that the duplicated CfARFs might have been divergent due to differential expression and variations in domains and motifs. Our work provides a detailed catalog of CfARFs in lemongrass, representing a first step toward characterizing CfARF functions, and may be useful in molecular breeding to enhance lemongrass plant growth.

RESUMO

Methanol has been considered one of the most important alternative carbon sources for the next-generation biomanufacturing due to its low price, mature production processes, and potential sustainability. Constructing microbial cell factories for methanol to chemical biotransformation has become a research hotspot in the green biomanufacturing industry. Focusing on the microorganisms that can naturally use methanol, we compare them with non-natural cell factories for chemical production from methanol. We discuss the key issues and challenges associated with natural cell factories for chemical production from methanol, summarize recent research progress surrounding these issues, and propose possible solutions to these challenges. This review helps to generate feasible guidelines and research strategies for the modification of natural cell factories for efficient methanol to chemical production in the future.

RESUMO

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Early diagnosis in the critical period is important for ASD children. Recent studies of neurodevelopmental behavioral features and joint attention in high-risk infants showed there are some special cues which can distinguish ASD from typical development infant. But the findings of high-risk population may not be applicable to the general population. It is necessary to "analogically" study the potential warning traits of ASD in infancy in the general population. We did a nested case-control study from June 2019 to November 2022 in Tianjin, China, including 76 general infants whom completed the neurodevelopmental evaluation, the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-23 (CHAT-23) screening, and eye tracking task. Social behavior quotient in infancy was negatively correlated to CHAT-23 total scores in toddlerhood. Social behavior quotient in infancy was positively correlated to initiating joint attention in toddlerhood. Regression model showed that high fine motor scale and social behaviour scale quotient in infancy were associated with an decreased risk of the total score of CHAT-23 ≥2 in toddlerhood. The Receiver operating characteristic curve showed the social behaviour in infancy alone and the combination of fine motor and social behaviour in infancy contributed to auxiliary diagnosis of higher level of autistic traits in toddlerhood. These findings suggest that Impaired development of fine motor and social behavior in infancy are potential warning features of high autistic traits in general population.

RESUMO

Thrombosis and plasma leakage are two of the most frequent dysfunctions of polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membrane (PPM) used in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. In this study, a superhydrophilic endothelial membrane mimetic coating (SEMMC) was constructed on polydopamine-polyethyleneimine pre-coated surfaces of the PPM oxygenator and its ECMO circuit to explore safer and more sustainable ECMO strategy. The SEMMC is fabricated by multi-point anchoring of a phosphorylcholine and carboxyl side chained copolymer (PMPCC) and grafting of heparin (Hep) to form PMPCC-Hep interface, which endows the membrane superior hemocompatibility and anticoagulation performances. Furthermore, the modified PPM reduces protein adsorption amount to less than 30 ng/cm2. More significantly, the PMPCC-Hep coated ECMO system extends the anti-leakage and non-clotting oxygenation period to more than 15 h in anticoagulant-free animal extracorporeal circulation, much better than the bare and conventional Hep coated ECMO systems with severe clots and plasma leakage in 4 h and 8 h, respectively. This SEMMC strategy of grafting bioactive heparin onto bioinert zwitterionic copolymer interface has great potential in developing safer and longer anticoagulant-free ECMO systems. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A superhydrophilic endothelial membrane mimetic coating was constructed on surfaces of polypropylene hollow fiber membrane (PPM) oxygenator and its ECMO circuit by multi-point anchoring of a phosphorylcholine and carboxyl side chain copolymer (PMPCC) and grafting of heparin (Hep). The strong antifouling nature of the PMPCC-Hep coating resists the adsorption of plasma bio-molecules, resulting in enhanced hemocompatibility and anti-leakage ability. The grafted heparin on the zwitterionic PMPCC interface exhibits superior anticoagulation property. More significantly, the PMPCC-Hep coating achieves an extracorporeal circulation in a pig model for at least 15 h without any systemic anticoagulant. This endothelial membrane mimetic anticoagulation strategy shows great potential for the development of safer and longer anticoagulant-free ECMO systems.

RESUMO

Breast infection is the primary etiology of mastitis in dairy cows, leading to a reduction in the quality of dairy products and resulting in substantial economic losses for animal husbandry. Although antibiotic treatment can eliminate the pathogenic microorganisms that induce mastitis, it cannot repair the inflammatory damage of mammary epithelial cells and blood milk barrier. Mas1 is a G protein-coupled receptor, and its role in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) -induced inflammatory injury to mammary epithelial cells has not been studied. LPS treatment of EpH4 EV cells led to a significant downregulation of Mas1 transcript levels, which attracted our great interest, suggesting that Mas1 may be an important target for the treatment of mastitis. Therefore, this study intends to verify the role of Mas1 in the inflammatory injury of EpH4 EV cells by gene overexpression technology and gene silencing technology. The findings demonstrated that the overexpression of the Mas1 gene effectively reversed the activation of the nuclear factor-κB/mitogen-activated protein kinase (NF-κB/MAPK) signaling pathways induced by LPS, while also suppressing the upregulation of pro-inflammatory mediators. Furthermore, overexpression of the Mas1 gene reversed the downregulation of zonula occludens 1 (ZO-1), Occludin, and Claudin-3 caused by LPS, suggesting that Mas1 could promote to repair the blood-milk barrier. However, the silencing of the Mas1 gene using siRNA resulted in a contrasting effect. These results indicated that Mas1 alleviated the inflammatory injury of mammary epithelial cells induced by LPS.

RESUMO

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) has poor prognosis and elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying iCCA malignancy is of great significance. Glycosylation, an important post-translational modification, is closely associated with tumor progression. Altered glycosylation, including aberrant sialylation resulting from abnormal expression of sialyltransferases (STs) and neuraminidases (NEUs), is a significant feature of cancer cells. However, there is limited information on the roles of STs and NEUs in iCCA malignancy. Here, utilizing our proteogenomic resources from a cohort of 262 iCCA patients, we identified ST3GAL1 as a prognostically relevant molecule in iCCA. Moreover, overexpression of ST3GAL1 promoted proliferation, migration and invasion and inhibited apoptosis of iCCA cells in vitro. Through proteomic analyses, we identified the downstream pathway potentially regulated by ST3GAL1, which was the NF-κB signaling pathway and further demonstrated that this pathway was positively correlated with malignancy in iCCA cells. Notably, glycoproteomics showed that O-glycosylation was changed in iCCA cells with high ST3GAL1 expression. Importantly, the altered O-glycopeptides underscored the potential utility of O-glycosylation profiling as a discriminatory marker for iCCA cells with ST3GAL1 overexpression. Additionally, miR-320b was identified as a post-transcriptional regulator of ST3GAL1, capable of suppressing ST3GAL1 expression and then reducing the proliferation, migration and invasion abilities of iCCA cell lines. Taken together, these results suggest ST3GAL1 could serve as a promising therapeutic target for iCCA.

RESUMO

Improving the nutrient content of red soils in southern China is a priority for efficient rice production there. To assess the effectiveness of oilseed rape as green manure for the improvement of soil phosphorus nutrient supply and rice yield in red soil areas, a long-term field plot experiment was conducted comparing two species of rape, Brassica napus (BN) and Brassica juncea (BJ). The effects of returning oilseed rape on soil phosphorus availability, phosphorus absorption, and yield of subsequent rice under rice-green manure rotation mode were analyzed, using data from the seasons of 2020 to 2021. The study found that compared with winter fallow treatment (WT) and no-tillage treatment (NT), the soil available phosphorus content of BN was increased, and that of BJ was significantly increased. The content of water-soluble inorganic phosphorus of BJ increased, and that of BN increased substantially. Compared with the WT, the soil organic matter content and soil total phosphorus content of BN significantly increased, as did the soil available potassium content of BJ, and the soil total phosphorus content of BJ was significantly increased compared with NT. The soil particulate phosphorus content of BJ and BN was significantly increased by 14.00% and 16.00%, respectively. Compared with the WT, the phosphorus activation coefficient of BJ was significantly increased by 11.41%. The rice plant tiller number under the green manure returning treatment was significantly increased by 43.16% compared with the winter fallow treatment. The green manure returning measures increased rice grain yield by promoting rice tiller numbers; BN increased rice grain yield by 9.91% and BJ by 11.68%. Based on these results, returning oilseed rape green manure could augment the phosphorus nutrients of red soil and promote phosphorus availability. Rice-oilseed rape green manure rotation could increase rice grain yield.

RESUMO

The spin angular momentum (SAM) of an elliptically or circularly polarized light beam can be transferred to matter to drive a spinning motion. It is counterintuitive to find that a light beam without SAM can also cause the spinning of microparticles. Here, we demonstrate controllable spinning of birefringent microparticles via a tightly focused radially polarized vortex beam that has no SAM prior to focusing. To this end, the orbital Hall effect is proposed to control the radial separation of two spin components in the focused field, and tunable transfer of local SAM to microparticles is achieved by manipulating the twisted wavefront of the source light. Our work broadens the perspectives for controllable exertion of optical torques via the spin-orbit interactions.

RESUMO

Backyard chickens usually have open housing and scavenge for food, facilitating contact with infective forms of parasites present in the environment and increasing the risk of parasitic infections. Coccidiosis and ascaridiosis are two internal parasites in scavenging chickens that cause production losses to farmers. Prevalence data of these two diseases are scarce in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) but necessary to assess the burden of disease in backyard chickens. This study estimates the clinical prevalence of coccidiosis and ascaridiosis at the country and regional levels in all LMICs using regression imputation methods. Regression models were developed with data of known prevalence of these parasites and using primarily climatic factors as predictors. A binomial random effects model was developed for each disease to impute prevalence. The overall estimated prevalence of coccidiosis was 0.39 (95 % CI: 0.37-0.42), with a higher mean prevalence in tropical countries. The overall estimated prevalence of ascaridiosis was 0.23 (95 % CI: 0.22-0.25) with a higher mean prevalence in countries with tropical, temperate and continental climates. The findings of this study can aid to identify the burdens of coccidiosis and ascaridiosis infections across countries and regions, which can inform disease control plans and, and encourage international alliances to facilitate access to preventive measures, improving animal health and reducing production losses.

RESUMO

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is becoming an increasingly serious health problem in humans and animals. Probiotics can inhibit the development of IBD. Due to the specificity of the strains, the function and mechanism of action of different strains are still unclear. Here, a DSS-induced colitis mouse model was utilized to investigate the ability and mechanism by which Lacticaseibacillus casei IB1 alleviates colitis. Treatment with L. casei IB1 improved DSS-induced colitis in mice, as indicated by increased body weight, colon length, and goblet cell numbers and decreased disease activity index (DAI), proinflammatory factor (TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6) levels, and histopathological scores after intake of IB1. IB1 supplementation also improved the expression of tight junction proteins and inhibited the activation of the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways to alleviate intestinal inflammation. In addition, IB1 rebalanced the intestinal microbial composition of colitis mice by increasing the abundance of Faecalibaculum and Alistipes and decreasing the abundance of Bacteroides and Escherichia_Shigella. In summary, L. casei IB1 showed great potential for relieving colitis by regulating the microbiota and restoring the epithelial barrier. It can be used as a potential probiotic for the prevention and treatment of UC in the future.

RESUMO

This study addresses the challenges in plant pest and disease prediction within the context of smart agriculture, highlighting the need for efficient data processing techniques. In response to the limitations of existing models, which are characterized by slow training speeds and a low prediction accuracy, we introduce an innovative prediction method that integrates gene expression programming (GEP) with support vector machines (SVM). Our approach, the gene expression programming-support vector machine (GEP-SVM) model, begins with encoding and fitness function determination, progressing through cycles of selection, crossover, mutation, and the application of a convergence criterion. This method uniquely employs individual gene values as parameters for SVM, optimizing them through a grid search technique to refine genetic parameters. We tested this model using historical data on wheat blossom midges in Shaanxi Province, spanning from 1933 to 2010, and compared its performance against traditional methods, such as GEP, SVM, naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbor, and BP neural networks. Our findings reveal that the GEP-SVM model achieves a leading back-generation accuracy rate of 90.83%, demonstrating superior generalization and fitting capabilities. These results not only enhance the computational efficiency of pest and disease prediction in agriculture but also provide a scientific foundation for future predictive endeavors, contributing significantly to the optimization of agricultural production strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oncomelania hupensis is the exclusive intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum in China. Snail control is an essential component of schistosomiasis elimination programme. With 70 years of continuous efforts, the range of O. hupensis had reduced significantly, but slowed down in last decades. A large number of levees against flooding were constructed along Yangtze River and its affiliated lakes in the middle and lower reaches, which influenced the hydrology and ecology in the alluvial plains. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of levees on the distribution of O. hupensis in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. METHODS: The snail habitats were digitalised by hand-held GPS system. The years for discovery and elimination of snail habitats were extracted from historical records. The accumulated snail-infested range for each habitat was calculated on the basis of annual reports. The current distribution of O. hupensis was determined by systematic and environmental sampling. The geographical distribution of levees was obtained from satellite imagery. To assess the impact of levees, the data pertaining to O. hupensis were divided into two parts: inside and outside the Yangtze River. Joinpoint regression was utilised to divide the study time span and further characterise the regression in each period. The 5-year-period moving averages of eliminated area infested by snails were calculated for the habitats inside and outside Yangtze River. The moving routes of corresponding geographical median centres were simulated in ArcGIS. Hotspot analysis was used to determine the areas with statistical significance clustering of O. hupensis density. RESULTS: Three periods were identified according to Joinpoint regression both inside and outside Yangtze River. The area infested by O. hupensis increased in the first two periods. It decreased rapidly outside Yangtze River year over year after 1970, while that inside the Yangtze River did not change significantly. Furthermore, the latter was significantly higher than the former. It was observed that the present density of O. hupensis inside Yangtze River was lower than outside the Yangtze River. The median centre for eliminated ranges inside Yangtze River wavered between the east (lower reach) and the west (middle reach). In contrast, the median centre for eliminated ranges continuously moved from the east to the west. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that the levees had a considerable negative impact on the distribution of O. hupensis outside Yangtze River. Some hotspots observed in the irrigation areas need a sluice system at the inlet of branch for snail control. The major distribution of O. hupensis located in Hubei might be caused by severe waterlogging. The intensive surveillance should be implemented there. The biggest two freshwater lakes, the major endemic regions historically, were identified as cold spots. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mirror syndrome is a rare disease characterized by "triple edema", while Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (PHUS) is a serious disease that occurs within a short period of time after the end of pregnancy, with a low prevalence and poor prognosis, and it is even rarer for both to occur in the same patient. METHODS: We report a case of mirror syndrome combined with PHUS and analyze the clinical data to improve the understanding of the disease. RESULTS: The patient presented clinically with "triple edema" and was diagnosed with mirror image syndrome. After cesarean section, the patient developed cardiac insufficiency, renal insufficiency, hemolysis, and other symptoms and was diagnosed as PHUS. After active treatment, the maternal prognosis was good. CONCLUSIONS: Mirror syndrome and PHUS are both clinically rare diseases with poor long-term prognosis if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner; therefore, awareness of the diseases, early and accurate diagnosis and timely and correct treatment should be improved.
