BACKGROUND: To compare the clinical outcomes of two treatment modalities, initial surgery and primary definitive radiotherapy (RT), in Taiwanese patients diagnosed with cT1-2N0M0 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). METHODS: Between 2011 and 2019, we analyzed data for 13,542 cT1-2N0M0 patients who underwent initial surgery (n = 13,542) or definitive RT with a dosage of at least 6600 cGy (n = 145) for the treatment of OCSCC. To account for baseline differences, we employed propensity score (PS) matching, resulting in two well-balanced study groups (initial surgery, n = 580; definitive RT, n = 145). RESULTS: Before PS matching, the 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS) rates were 88% for the surgery group and 58% for the RT group. After PS matching, the 5-year DSS rates of the two groups were 86% and 58%, respectively. Similarly, the 5-year overall survival (OS) rates before PS matching were 80% for the surgery group and 36% for the RT group, whereas after PS matching, they were 73% and 36%, respectively. All these differences were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). A multivariable analysis identified treatment with RT, older age, stage II tumors, and a higher burden of comorbidities as independent risk factors for both DSS and OS. We also examined the 5-year outcomes for various subgroups (margin ≥5 mm, margin <5 mm, positive margins, RT combined with chemotherapy, and RT alone) as follows: DSS, 89%/88%/79%/63%/51%, respectively, p < 0.0001; OS, 82%/79%/68%/39%/32%, respectively, p < 0.0001. CONCLUSIONS: In Taiwanese patients with cT1-2N0M0 OCSCC, a remarkably low proportion (1.1%) completed definitive RT. A significant survival disparity of 30% was observed between patients who underwent initial surgery and those who received definitive RT. Interestingly, even patients from the surgical group with positive surgical margins exhibited a significantly superior survival compared to those in the definitive RT group.

Nondestructive plant phenotyping forms a key technique for unraveling molecular processes underlying plant development and response to the environment. While the emergence of high-throughput phenotyping facilities can further our understanding of plant development and stress responses, their high costs greatly hinder scientific progress. To democratize high-throughput plant phenotyping, we developed sets of low-cost image- and weight-based devices to monitor plant shoot growth and evapotranspiration. We paired these devices to a suite of computational pipelines for integrated and straightforward data analysis. The developed tools were validated for their suitability for large genetic screens by evaluating a cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) diversity panel for responses to drought stress. The observed natural variation was used as an input for a genome-wide association study, from which we identified nine genetic loci that might contribute to cowpea drought resilience during early vegetative development. The homologs of the candidate genes were identified in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and subsequently evaluated for their involvement in drought stress by using available T-DNA insertion mutant lines. These results demonstrate the varied applicability of this low-cost phenotyping system. In the future, we foresee these setups facilitating the identification of genetic components of growth, plant architecture, and stress tolerance across a wide variety of plant species.

BACKGROUND: While several studies have indicated that a margin status of < 1 mm should be classified as a positive margin in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC), there is a lack of extensive cohort studies comparing the clinical outcomes between patients with positive margins and margins < 1 mm. METHODS: Between 2011 and 2020, we identified 18,416 Taiwanese OCSCC patients who underwent tumor resection and neck dissection. Of these, 311 had margins < 1 mm and 1013 had positive margins. To compare patients with margins < 1 mm and those with positive margins, a propensity score (PS)-matched analysis (n = 253 in each group) was conducted. RESULTS: The group with margins < 1 mm displayed a notably higher prevalence of several variables: 1) tongue subsite, 2) younger age, 3) smaller depth of invasion), 4) early tumor stage, and 5) treatment with surgery alone. Patients with margins < 1 mm demonstrated significantly better disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) rates compared to those with positive margins (74 % versus 53 %, 65 % versus 43 %, both p < 0.0001). Multivariable analysis further confirmed that positive margins were an independent predictor of worse 5-year DSS (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.38, p = 0.0103) and OS (HR = 1.28, p = 0.0222). In the PS-matched cohort, the 5-year outcomes for patients with margins < 1 mm compared to positive margins were as follows: DSS, 71 % versus 59 %, respectively (p = 0.0127) and OS, 60 % versus 48 %, respectively (p = 0.0398). CONCLUSIONS: OCSCC patients with a margin status < 1 mm exhibited distinct clinicopathological characteristics and a more favorable prognosis compared to those with positive resection margins.

Water scarcity, resulting from climate change, poses a significant threat to ecosystems. Syntrichia ruralis, a dryland desiccation-tolerant moss, provides valuable insights into survival of water-limited conditions. We sequenced the genome of S. ruralis, conducted transcriptomic analyses, and performed comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses with existing genomes and transcriptomes, including with the close relative S. caninervis. We took a genetic approach to characterize the role of an S. ruralis transcription factor, identified in transcriptomic analyses, in Arabidopsis thaliana. The genome was assembled into 12 chromosomes encompassing 21 169 protein-coding genes. Comparative analysis revealed copy number and transcript abundance differences in known desiccation-associated gene families, and highlighted genome-level variation among species that may reflect adaptation to different habitats. A significant number of abscisic acid (ABA)-responsive genes were found to be negatively regulated by a MYB transcription factor (MYB55) that was upstream of the S. ruralis ortholog of ABA-insensitive 3 (ABI3). We determined that this conserved MYB transcription factor, uncharacterized in Arabidopsis, acts as a negative regulator of an ABA-dependent stress response in Arabidopsis. The new genomic resources from this emerging model moss offer novel insights into how plants regulate their responses to water deprivation.

Nutrition assessment is crucial for dietary guidance and prevention of malnutrition. Recent endeavors in wearable biochemical sensors have enabled real-time, in situ analysis of nutrients in sweat. However, the monitoring of riboflavin, an indispensable vitamin B involved in energy metabolism, remains challenging due to its trace level and variations in the sweat matrix. Herein, we report a wireless, battery-free, and flexible wearable biosensing system for the in situ monitoring of sweat riboflavin. Highly sensitive and selective electrochemical voltammetric detection is realized based on the synergistic effect of electrodeposited reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with a low detection limit of 1.2 nM. The fully integrated system is capable of sweat sampling with the microfluidic patch, real-time riboflavin analysis and pH calibration with the flexible electrode array, as well as wirelessly simultaneous near field communication (NFC) energy harvesting and data transmission with the flexible circuit and a smartphone. On-body human sweat analysis demonstrates high accuracy cross-validated with gold-standard measurements, and reveals a strong correlation between sweat and urine riboflavin levels. The proposed wearable platform opens up attractive possibilities for noninvasive nutrient tracking, providing strong potential for personalized dietary guidance towards precision nutrition.

BACKGROUND: The current NCCN guidelines recommend considering elective neck dissection (END) for early-stage oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) with a depth of invasion (DOI) exceeding 3 mm. However, this DOI threshold, determined by evaluating the occult lymph node metastatic rate, lacks robust supporting evidence regarding its impact on patient outcomes. In this nationwide study, we sought to explore the specific indications for END in patients diagnosed with OCSCC at stage cT2N0M0, as defined by the AJCC Eighth Edition staging criteria. METHODS: We examined 4723 patients with cT2N0M0 OCSCC, of which 3744 underwent END and 979 were monitored through neck observation (NO). RESULTS: Patients who underwent END had better 5-year outcomes compared to those in the NO group. The END group had higher rates of neck control (95% vs. 84%, p < 0.0001), disease-specific survival (DSS; 87% vs. 84%, p = 0.0259), and overall survival (OS; 79% vs. 73%, p = 0.0002). Multivariable analysis identified NO, DOI ≥5.0 mm, and moderate-to-poor tumor differentiation as independent risk factors for 5-year neck control, DSS, and OS. Based on these prognostic variables, three distinct outcome subgroups were identified within the NO group. These included a low-risk subgroup (DOI <5 mm plus well-differentiated tumor), an intermediate-risk subgroup (DOI ≥5.0 mm or moderately differentiated tumor), and a high-risk subgroup (poorly differentiated tumor or DOI ≥5.0 mm plus moderately differentiated tumor). Notably, the 5-year survival outcomes (neck control/DSS/OS) for the low-risk subgroup within the NO group (97%/95%/85%, n = 251) were not inferior to those of the END group (95%/87%/79%). CONCLUSIONS: By implementing risk stratification within the NO group, we found that 26% (251/979) of low-risk patients achieved outcomes similar to those in the END group. Therefore, when making decisions regarding the implementation of END in patients with cT2N0M0 OCSCC, factors such as DOI and tumor differentiation should be taken into account.

Coastal habitats are exposed to increasing pressure of nanopollutants commonly combined with warming due to the seasonal temperature cycles and global climate change. To investigate the toxicological effects of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and elevated temperature on the intestinal health of the mussels (Mytilus coruscus), the mussels were exposed to 0.1 mg/L TiO2 NPs with different crystal structures for 14 days at 20 °C and 28 °C, respectively. Compared to 20 °C, the agglomeration of TiO2 NPs was more serious at 28 °C. Exposure to TiO2 NPs led to elevated mortality of M. coruscus and modified the intestinal microbial community as shown by 16S rRNA sequence analysis. Exposure to TiO2 NPs changed the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. The relative abundances of putative mutualistic symbionts Tenericutes and Fusobacteria increased in the gut of M. coruscus exposed to anatase, which have contributed to the lower mortality in this group. LEfSe showed the combined stress of warming and TiO2 NPs increased the risk of M. coruscus being infected with potential pathogenic bacteria. This study emphasizes the toxicity differences between crystal structures of TiO2 NPs, and will provides an important reference for analyzing the physiological and ecological effects of nanomaterial pollution on bivalves under the background of global climate change.

Stretchable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are widely applied in wearable and implantable electronics, smart medical devices, and soft robots. However, it is still a challenge to produce stretchable TENGs with both exceptional elasticity and output performance, which limits their application scope. In this work, high-performance stretchable TENGs are developed through a thermo-compression (TC) fabrication process. In particular, a poly(vinylidene fluoride) film is compactly bound to the elastic thermoplastic polyurethane substrate, which inherits excellent stretchability with a strain of up to 815%. Furthermore, owing to the large surface area, tight contact, and effective vertical transport of tribo-induced charges between the coupled fibrous tribo-layer and soft substrate, the TC composite film-based TENGs exhibit a greater output (2-4 times) than unlaminated film-based TENGs. Additionally, the broad universality of this method is proven using various tribo- and substrate materials. The proposed technology provides a novel and effective approach to conjointly boost the output and stretchability of TENGs, showing encouraging application prospects in self-powered wearable and flexible electronics.

Excessive use of plastics in daily life is causing plastic pollution in aquatic environment and threatening the aquatic life. Therefore, research on the plastic pollution in aquatic environment is crucial to understand its impact and develop effective solution for safeguarding aquatic life and ecosystem. The current study investigated the effects of water borne polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) on hemato-immunological indices, serum metabolic enzymes, gills, and liver antioxidant parameters, plasma cortisol level and histopathological changes in liver and gill tissues of the widely distributed fish Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. The fingerlings of H. molitrix were exposed to different concentrations (T1-0.5, T2-1.0, and T3-2.0 mg/L) of PS-NPs respectively for 15 days consecutively. Our results indicated the dose dependent negative effects of PS-NPs on the physiology and histopathology of H. molitrix. Immuno-hematological indices showed significant increase in WBCs count, phagocytic activity, and lysozyme activity, while decreased RBC count, Hct%, Hb level, total proteins, IgM, and respiratory burst activity were observed. The levels of antioxidant enzymes like SOD, CAT and POD showed the decreasing trends while metabolic enzymes (AST, ALT, ALP and LDH), LPO, ROS activities and relative expressions of SOD1, CAT, HIF1-α and HSP-70 genes increased with increased concentrations of PS-NPs. Moreover, blood glucose and cortisol levels also showed significant increasing trends with dose dependent manner. Histopathological examination indicated moderate to severe changes in the gills and liver tissues of the group treated with 2.0 mg/L of PS-NPs. Overall, the results showed the deleterious effects of PS-NPs on physiology, immunity, metabolism, and gene expressions of H. molitrix. It is concluded that particulate plastic pollution has deleterious effects on filter feeding fish, which might affect human health through food chain and particulate chemical toxicity.

Considering the wide application of nanoparticles in various fields of life and growing concern regarding their toxic effects, the present study was designed with the aim to evaluate the potential risks of using copper sulfate nanoparticles (CuSO4-NPs) in comparison to bulk form. Nanoparticles of CuSO4, having mean size of 73 nm were prepared by ball milling method, and fingerlings of Labeo rohita were exposed to two levels, 20 and 100 µg L-1 of CuSO4 in both bulk and nano forms for 28 days and their comparative effects on the metallothioneins (MTs), heat shock proteins 70 (HSP 70), lipid profile, cholesterol (CHOL) and triglyceraldehyde (TG) levels, activities of some metabolic enzymes Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate transaminase (AST) Akaline phosphatase (ALP), and genes expressions of HSP-70, TNF-α and IL1-ß were investigated. CuSO4 showed the concentration and particle type dependent effects. The over expression of HSPs and MTs, significant decreases in CHOL, TG, low density lipid (LDL) levels and ALP activity, while significant increases in high density lipid (HDL)level as well as ALT and AST activities and HSP-70, TNF-α and IL1-ß expressions were observed in response to higher concentration of both bulk and nano form of copper sulfate. At lower concentration (20 µg L-1), however, only bulk form showed toxicity. Thus, low concentrations of CuSO4-NPs pose negligible threat to freshwater fish.

Background: Influenza A virus (IAV) infection poses a persistent global health challenge, necessitating a nuanced grasp of host immune responses for optimal interventions. While the interplay between aging, immunosenescence, and IAV is recognized as key in severe lower respiratory tract infections, the role of specific patient attributes in shaping innate immune reactions and inflammasome activity during IAV infection remains under-investigated. In this study, we utilized an ex vivo infection model of human lung tissues with H3N2 IAV to discern relationships among patient demographics, IAV nucleoprotein (NP) expression, toll-like receptor (TLR) profiles, PD-1/PD-L1 markers, and cytokine production. Methods: Our cohort consisted of thirty adult patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery during 2018-2019. Post-surgical lung tissues were exposed to H3N2 IAV for ex vivo infections, and the ensuing immune responses were profiled using flow cytometry. Results: We observed pronounced IAV activity within lung cells, as indicated by marked NP upregulation in both epithelial cells (P = 0.022) and macrophages (P = 0.003) in the IAV-exposed group relative to controls. Notably, interleukin-2 levels correlated with variations in TLR1 expression on epithelial cells and PD-L1 markers on macrophages. Age emerged as a modulating factor, dampening innate immune reactions, as evidenced by reduced interleukin-2 and interferon-γ concentrations (both adjusted P < 0.05). Intriguingly, a subset of participants with pronounced tumor necrosis factor-alpha post-mock infection (Cluster 1) showed attenuated cytokine responses in contrast to their counterparts in Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 (all adjusted P < 0.05). Individuals in Cluster 2, characterized by a low post-mock infection NP expression in macrophages, exhibited reduced variations in both NP and TLR1-3 expressions on these cells and a decreased variation in interleukin-2 secretion in comparison to their Cluster 3 counterparts, who were identified by their elevated NP macrophage expression (all adjusted P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our work elucidates the multifaceted interplay of patient factors, innate immunity, and inflammasome responses in lung tissues subjected to ex vivo H3N2 IAV exposure, reflecting real-world lower respiratory tract infections. While these findings provide a foundation for tailored therapeutic strategies, supplementary studies are requisite for thorough validation and refinement.

BACKGROUND: Using the eye-tracking technique, our work aimed to examine whether difference in clinical background may affect the training outcome of resident doctors' interpretation skills and reading behaviour related to brain computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Twelve resident doctors in the neurology, radiology, and emergency departments were recruited. Each participant had to read CT images of the brain for two cases. We evaluated each participant's accuracy of lesion identification. We also used the eye-tracking technique to assess reading behaviour. We recorded dwell times, fixation counts, run counts, and first-run dwell times of target lesions to evaluate visual attention. Transition entropy was applied to assess the temporal relations and spatial dynamics of systematic image reading. RESULTS: The eye-tracking results showed that the image reading sequence examined by transition entropy was comparable among resident doctors from different medical specialties (p = 0.82). However, the dwell time of the target lesions was shorter for the resident doctors from the neurology department (4828.63 ms, p = 0.01) than for those from the resident doctors from the radiology (6275.88 ms) and emergency (5305.00 ms) departments. The eye-tracking results in individual areas of interest only showed differences in the eye-tracking performance of the first-run dwell time (p = 0.05) in the anterior cerebral falx. DISCUSSION: Our findings demonstrate that resident doctors from different medical specialties may achieve similar imaging reading patterns for brain CT. This may mitigate queries regarding the influence of different backgrounds on training outcomes.

As a transfer member at the discontinuous place of vertical load, the deep beam has a complex stress mechanism and many influencing factors, such as compressive strength of concrete, shear span ratio, and reinforcement ratio. At the same time, the stress analysis principle of traditional shallow beams is no longer applicable to the design and calculation of deep-beam structure. The main purpose of this paper was to use the strut-and-tie model to analyze its stress mechanism, and to verify the applicability of the model. Nine high-strength concrete deep-beam specimens with longitudinal reinforcement with an anchor plate of the same size were tested by two-point concentrated loading method. The effects of shear span ratio (0.3, 0.6, and 0.9), longitudinal reinforcement ratio (0.67%, 1.05%, and 1.25%), horizontal reinforcement ratio (0.33%, 0.45%, and 0.50%), and stirrup reinforcement ratio (0.25%, 0.33%, and 0.50%) on the failure mode, deflection curve, characteristic load, crack width, steel bar, and concrete strain of the specimens were analyzed. The results showed that the failure mode of deep-beam specimens was diagonal compression failure. The normal section cracking load was about 15 to 20% of the ultimate load, and the inclined section cracking load was about 30~40% of the ultimate load. The shear span ratio increased from 0.3 to 0.9, and the bearing capacity decreased by 32.9%. When the longitudinal reinforcement ratio increased from 0.67% to 1.25%, the ultimate load increased by 42.6%. The shear span ratio and longitudinal reinforcement ratio have a significant effect on the bearing capacity of the high-strength concrete deep beams with longitudinal reinforcement with an anchor plate. The shear capacity of nine high-strength concrete deep-beam specimens with longitudinal reinforcement with an anchor plate was calculated by national standards, and the results were compared with the calculation results of the Tan-Tang model, the Tan-Cheng model, SSTM, and SSSTM. The analysis showed that the softened strut-and-tie model takes into account the softening effect of compressive concrete, and is a more accurate mechanical model, which can be applied to predict the shear capacity of high-strength concrete deep-beam members with longitudinal reinforcement with an anchor plate.

DeePMD-kit is a powerful open-source software package that facilitates molecular dynamics simulations using machine learning potentials known as Deep Potential (DP) models. This package, which was released in 2017, has been widely used in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and material science for studying atomistic systems. The current version of DeePMD-kit offers numerous advanced features, such as DeepPot-SE, attention-based and hybrid descriptors, the ability to fit tensile properties, type embedding, model deviation, DP-range correction, DP long range, graphics processing unit support for customized operators, model compression, non-von Neumann molecular dynamics, and improved usability, including documentation, compiled binary packages, graphical user interfaces, and application programming interfaces. This article presents an overview of the current major version of the DeePMD-kit package, highlighting its features and technical details. Additionally, this article presents a comprehensive procedure for conducting molecular dynamics as a representative application, benchmarks the accuracy and efficiency of different models, and discusses ongoing developments.

Continuous positive airway pressure is the first-line and gold-standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Pharmacotherapy is not commonly used in treating OSA until recently. Combined noradrenergic and antimuscarinic agents have been clinically applied for OSA patients with variable results. This meta-analysis study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the combined regimen on OSA. A systematic literature search was performed up to November 2022 for the effects of the combined regimen on OSA. Eight randomized controlled trials were identified and systematically reviewed for meta-analysis. There were significant mean differences between OSA patients taking a combined regimen and placebo in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) [mean difference (MD) -9.03 events/h, 95%CI (-16.22, -1.83 events/h; P = 0.01] and lowest oxygen saturation [MD 5.61%, 95% CI % (3.43, 7.80); P < 0.01]. Meta-regression showed that a higher proportion of male participants was associated with a greater reduction of AHI (p = 0.04). This study showed a positive but modest effect of pharmacotherapy in the reduction of OSA severity. The combination drugs are most applicable to male OSA patients based on their efficacy and pharmacological susceptibility. Pharmacotherapy may be applied as an alternative, adjunctive or synergistic treatment under careful consideration of its side effects.

Quantum entanglement is an important pillar of quantum information processing. In addition to the entanglement degree, the bandwidth of entangled states becomes another focus of quantum communication. Here, by virtue of a broadband frequency-dependent beam splitter, we experimentally demonstrate six pairs of independent entangled sideband modes with maximum entanglement degree of 8.1 dB. Utilizing a time delay compensation scheme, the bandwidth of independent entangled sideband modes is expanded to dozens of megahertz. This work provides a valuable resource to implement efficient quantum information processing.

Background: Dietary behavior is a main contributing yet modifiable factor to the body weight status of children and may be involved in the pathophysiology of childhood obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study aimed to investigate the dietary profile of pediatric OSA patients, effects of educational counseling after adenotonsillectomy, and predictor for disease resolution. Methods: This observational study included 50 pediatric OSA patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy with routine educational counseling (Group 1), 50 pediatric OSA patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy without formal educational counseling (Group 2), and 303 healthy children without OSA (Control). The three groups were matched by age. The consumption frequency of 25 food items/groups was assessed by the Short Food Frequency Questionnaire. Quality of life was evaluated by the OSA-18 questionnaire. Sleep architecture and OSA severity were measured by standard polysomnography. Between- and within-group comparisons were analyzed by non-parametric approaches and generalized estimating equations. Prediction of disease recovery was performed by multivariable logistic regression models. Results: Group 1 children consumed fruit drinks with sugar, vegetables, sweets, chocolate, rice, and noodles more frequently than Control Group children. At baseline, the distributions of sex, weight status, OSA-18 scores, and polysomnographic variables were comparable between Group 1 and Group 2. After a 12-month follow-up, Group 1 had better improvements in physical suffering, caregiver concerns, sleep architecture, and mean peripheral oxygen saturation compared to Group 2. Furthermore, Group 1 no longer had excessive consumption of fruit drinks with sugar, chocolate, and noodles; however, food consumption frequencies did not change significantly. Notably, younger age and reduced intake of butter/margarine on bread and noodles were independent predictors of cured OSA in Group 1. Conclusion: The present study preliminarily characterized an unhealthy dietary profile among pediatric OSA patients and suggested that routine educational counseling in addition to adenotonsillectomy yielded some clinical benefits. Certain items/groups of food frequencies may be associated with disease recovery and further investigations are warranted.

Background: Chemotherapy plays an important role in definitive chemoradiotherapy strategies. However, the most optimal concurrent chemotherapy scheme is still controversial. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of paclitaxel/docetaxel combined with platinum (PTX) and fluorouracil combined with cisplatin (PF) in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) of unresectable esophageal cancer. Methods: The PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Google Scholar and Embase databases were searched by combining subject words and free words through December 31, 2021. The inclusion criteria were pathologically confirmed esophageal cancer studies using CCRT, where the chemotherapy regimen only compared PTX and PF. Quality evaluation and data extraction of studies that met the inclusion criteria were carried out independently. Stata 11.1 software was used to perform the meta-analysis. The begger analysis and egger analysis were used to assess publication bias, and the robustness of the pooled results further assessed by the Trim and Fill analysis. Results: After screening, 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. A total of 962 cases were enrolled, including 480 (49.9%) in the PTX group and 482 (50.1%) in the PF group. The gastrointestinal reaction to the PF regimen was the most serious [relative risk (RR) =0.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.36-0.80, P=0.003]. The complete remission (CR) rate, objective response rate (ORR), and disease control rate (DCR) of the PTX group were higher than those of the PF group (RR =1.35, 95% CI: 1.03-1.76, P=0.030; RR =1.12, 95% CI: 1.03-1.22, P=0.006; RR =1.05, 95% CI: 1.01-1.09, P=0.022). In terms of the overall survival (OS) rate, the 2-year survival rates of the PTX group were higher than those of the PF group (P=0.005). There was no significant difference in the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates between the two regimens (P=0.064, 0.144, and 0.341, respectively). There may be publication bias for ORR and DCR, and the results are reversed after applying the Trim and Fill method, so the combined results are not robust. Conclusions: PTX may be the preferred regimen for CCRT of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, with better short-term therapeutic effect and 2-year OS rate and lower gastrointestinal toxicity.

Background: Pediatric hypertension contributes to adulthood hypertension and target organ damage. Obesity is a well-known predictor for pediatric hypertension; however, the relationship between physical fitness and blood pressure (BP) is unclear among children. This study aimed to compare the differences in demographics, anthropometrics, and physical fitness across BP subgroups and investigate whether physical fitness was related to pediatric hypertension independent of weight status. Methods: This quantitative, cross-sectional study investigated demographic, anthropometric, physical fitness, and BP measures among 360 healthy school-aged children. Continuous variables were compared across BP subgroups with the one-way analysis of variance. Mediation and moderation analyses were used to explore the mechanism. Multivariable regression models were used to assess independent associations for hypertension. Results: There were 177 (49.2%), 37 (10.3%), and 146 (40.6%) children in the normotensive, elevated BP, and hypertensive subgroups, respectively. The hypertensive subgroup had higher body mass index (BMI) and waist/height ratio percentiles and performed worse in 800-m run, standing long jump (SLJ), and 1-min sit-ups than the normotensive subgroup. Furthermore, the 800-m run percentile (total effect: ß = 0.308, standard error = 0.044, p < 0.001) and sit and reach percentile (total effect: ß = 0.308, standard error = 0.044, p < 0.001) mediated the relationship between the BMI percentile and systolic BP percentile; the SLJ percentile was directly associated with the diastolic BP percentile (ß,-0.197, 95% confidence interval,-0.298-0.097; p < 0.001). The parsimonious model of multivariable regression models revealed that the SLJ percentile (adjusted exp (ß), 0.992, 95% confidence interval, 0.985-0.999; p = 0.042) and BMI percentile (adjusted exp (ß), 1.024, 95% confidence interval, 1.016-1.032; p < 0.001) were two independent predictors for pediatric hypertension. Conclusion: Physical fitness mediates the relationship between anthropometric and BP measures. The SLJ percentile is associated with pediatric hypertension independent of the BMI percentile. Proactive screening and health promotion for not only healthy weight status but also good physical fitness may be beneficial for BP control among school-aged students.
